Group to host benefit breakfast

ESCONDIDO ---- Partners of Palomar Salon No. 621 will host its Fifth-Sunday-of-the-Month breakfast from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Aug. 31 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 Park Ave. Donation is $6. Proceeds will benefit children with tuberculosis, cystic fibrosis and lung and respiratory illnesses, as well as scholarships for nurses. Donations are sent to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver.

English Country Dancers to hold dance

POWAY ---- San Diego English Country Dancers will hold a dance featuring Sharon Green as the guest caller from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 31 at the Academy of Dance, 12227 Poway Road. PhotoArts Group has permanent show venue

ESCONDIDO ---- The PhotoArts Group now has a permanent exhibit space in a section of the Escondido Municipal Gallery, 262 E. Grand Ave. The new venue has been named the InnerSpace Gallery.

Nearly two dozen PAG members will inaugurate the new venue Sept. 2-Oct. 2 with a show titled "Texture of Light." Their images illustrate how light enhances texture. The show coincides with the National Fiber Arts Show at the Escondido Municipal Gallery.

A grand opening and reception for the new photo gallery will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Sept. 13. Admission to the Escondido Municipal Gallery and the InnerSpace Gallery is free. Hours are 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Embroiderers' group to meet Sept. 4

Grandmothers Club to hold potluck

Chess lessons offered at SM library

Library Friends plan book sale

ESCONDIDO ---- The Friends of the Escondido Public Library will hold a huge sidewalk book sale from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 5 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 6 in front of the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St.

The sale will feature a wide assortment of popular fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. All books will be half-price. Also for sale will be magazines, movies in video and DVD formats, and an assortment of music CDs.

YMCA offers childhood obesity program

ESCONDIDO --- The Palomar Family YMCA will offer CHOICE (ChildHood Obesity Intervention, Caring & Education) classes for overweight or obese children beginning Sept. 8. The fun classes will include cardiovascular fitness activities, resistance training, nutrition education and healthy snacks, and healthy cooking demonstrations for parents.

Classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-4 p.m. for ages 6 to 8 and from 4-5 p.m. for ages 9 to 12. Cost is $40 per month for members; $55 for nonmembers. Financial assistance is available.

Computer classes offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council will offer a new session of computer classes for seniors starting Sept. 9. Courses include XP, Vista, E-mail, Internet and Macintosh. The small, personalized classes run 1 1/2 hours per week for eight weeks. Cost of $25 includes materials. Register between 9 a.m. and noon weekdays at the Escondido Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave.

In addition, the council will offer these seminars and services:

-- "Vista for Former Windows Users" seminar, 10 a.m.-noon Sept. 8. Cost is $5.

-- "Create Photo Story Videos" seminar. Learn how to turn photos into a video slide show with a simple free program. The two-hour seminar will cover how to annotate, narrate and add background music to photo stories. Basic computer skills required. Cost is $5. Call for dates, times and reservations.

-- One-on-one computer tutoring is available in a modern computer lab. Cost is $5 per hour. Call for an appointment.

AAUW plans membership event

ESCONDIDO ---- The American Association of University Women, Escondido-San Marcos branch, will launch its 2008-09 season with a membership salad supper at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 at the home of branch President Vicki Gohlich. Women and men are welcome.

The first branch meeting of the new year will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 at the Escondido Country Club. Guest speaker will be Elsa Singh, who recently traveled to South America to do charitable work with Global Volunteers. Cost for lunch is $16.

Square dance club offers classes

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The Wranglers Square Dance Club will open its classes for new dancers Sept. 10 and 17. No experience is necessary, attire is casual and anyone age 12 or older is welcome.

Classes will be held from 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays at Rolling Hills Elementary School, 15255 Penasquitos Drive. The Sept. 10 class is free; Starting Sept. 17, classes are $32 per person every eight weeks.

Boating skills course offered

ESCONDIDO ---- The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer a boating skills class that will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23 at the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, 720 N. Broadway.

The course is designed for all boaters and will cover all legal equipment requirements and regulations. Mandatory boater education will soon be required in California, and this course will satisfy the new law when it is enacted.

Arthritis Foundation aquatic classes offered

ESCONDIDO ---- Redwood Elderlink offers an Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program at its heated indoor pool. Classes are held through the week and offer gentle stretching and toning exercises; no swimming skills needed. Instructors are trained and certified by the Arthritis Foundation. Fire Protection District receives grant

DEER SPRINGS ---- The Deer Springs Fire Protection District recently received a grant for $30,000 from the Fire Intervention Relief Effort Campaign, a fund of the McCormick Foundation. The grant money will be used for fire equipment.

Bilingual Toastmasters Club meets

ESCONDIDO ---- The CLA Bilingual Toastmasters Club meets from 6-7 p.m. the second and fourth Mondays of the month in the Greenhouse Conference Room at Redwood Town Court, 500 E. Valley Parkway. Barona PowWow set for Aug. 29-31

SAN DIEGO ---- Celebrate American-Indian culture and traditions at the 38th annual Barona PowWow Aug. 29-31.

American Indian dancers from across the country will showcase traditional tribal dances and compete for cash and prizes totaling more than $60,000 during the three-day event. There also will be traditional singing and music, a hand drum contest, authentic American Indian cuisine and handcrafted art and jewelry.
