Church sponsors sports activities

Family fitness fun walk slated

OCEANSIDE ---- New Venture Christian Fellowship will host a free family fitness fun walk at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at 4000 Mystra Drive. Participants will meet with Carl Grubbs, gold medal senior Olympian and fitness coach, who will show how to improve upper-body strength and flexibility while walking. The course is set up for everyone regardless of age, physical limitations or athletic abilities. Bring along light hand weights or two 16-ounce water bottles, cans or stretch bands. After a short break, the group will take a short scenic hike on nearby trails.

Vista Elks to hold annual barbecue

VISTA ---- The Vista Elks Lodge will hold its 50th annual Barbecue Gala from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 31 at 1947 E. Vista Way, with food, music, raffle prizes and a craft fair. Raffle tickets for a 47-inch flat screen HDTV game-ready TV are available at the barbecue or in advance at the lodge. Tickets for the raffle are $1 each; winner need not be present to win.

VFW Post open for meals

VISTA ---- Vista VFW Post 7041 is open to the public for special meals four times a week at 1717 E. Vista Way. The special dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 29 is pork loin, veggies and salad for $6.50. Regular menu items also are available. Special dinners for the week are:

Clinic forms Young Fathers Club

Microchip your pet

CARLSBAD ---- The county Department of Animal Services hosts its ongoing program to microchip residents' dogs, cats or rabbits from 1-3 p.m. Thursdays at the County Animal Shelter, 2481 Palomar Airport Road. Senior center to host Wii Games

CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Senior Center will host weekly Wii game competitions for seniors from 1 to 3 p.m. Fridays at the center, 799 Pine Ave. Nintendo Wii is a virtual-reality computer console that makes any game easy to play. Participants can exercise while having fun and competing with other seniors. City to host 'Friday Night Film Festival'

CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Recreation Department will present its "Friday Night Film Festival" during August and September at the landmark Carrillo Ranch Historic Park, 6200 Flying LC Lane, near the intersection of Melrose Drive and Carrillo Way. Bring a low-back chair, flashlight and blanket to watch rare old films from the Golden Age of Hollywood, featuring Leo Carrillo, at the star's legendary ranch retreat. Attendees are welcome to picnic on the hacienda, or buy refreshments to support the Carrillo Ranch Barn Theater Stabilization/Restoration project.

Movies begin promptly at sunset. Films are selected for family entertainment; however, parental discretion is advised. All movies are subject to change without notice. There will be a showing of the "The Cisco Kid" TV serial before each main feature. Schedule includes:

-- Aug. 29, "Horror Island" (1941). In the tradition of "Ten Little Indians," a group of disparate types is lured to a supposedly haunted mansion on a remote island.

-- Sept. 5, "It Had to Happen" (1936). Embezzlement, conspiracy and love escalate toward a dramatic courtroom climax.

-- Sept. 12, "Lillian Russell" (1940). A biopic of the legendary (and much-married) 19th-century musical comedy star.

Award-winning teen violinist to perform

CARLSBAD ---- Award-winning teen violinist Antonio Pontarelli will perform an "Acoustic vs. Electric" concert Aug. 30 at the Museum of Making Music, 5790 Armada Drive.

An educational demonstration and workshop will begin at 5 p.m., followed by a concert at 7 p.m. that will highlight the evolution of sound from acoustic to electric violins in both classical and rock music. Pontarelli also will reveal some of the secrets that have helped him bring the timbre of the violin to popular music. During the concert, he will be accompanied by an acoustic/electric guitarist and pianist. The concert will feature a comparison and contrast of a variety of electric violins from Pontarelli's collection with those from the museum's violin exhibition.

Pine needle basketry class offered

ENCINITAS ---- The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will offer an Introduction to Pine Needle basketry class for ages 11 and older from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive.

Carol Lang will teach students to use local natural materials, transforming yard waste into functional vessels.

Cost is $60; $55 for museum members. An additional $10 materials and preparation fee will be paid directly to the teacher at the beginning of the class. Bring sharp scissors.

Botanical garden to offer commemorative tiles

ENCINITAS ---- Chaired by TV personality Loren Nancarrow and his wife, Susie , Quail Botanical Gardens' Commemorative Tile program will give donors the opportunity to leave their mark at the site with the creative help of landscape architects. The garden is offering personalized tiles at $250, $500 and $1,000. Embedded into several specially designed sitting walls that are spread around the Quail's new Hamilton Children's Garden, tiles will provide a special permanent memento to honor children, friends and loved ones. The Children's Garden, which will be the largest on the West Coast, is the first phase of a 4.5-acre expansion plan, providing a nurturing environment for children and families to explore the natural world. Shelter seeks food donations for pets

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The AniMeals program at the Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking pet food donations, particularly senior food for both dogs and cats. AniMeals works with Meals-on-Wheels and other organizations to provide free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly or disabled people throughout San Diego County. Drop off donations at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, 6461 El Apajo Road, or in the AniMeals bins at participating Petco stores. Volunteers can also hold their own AniMeals pet food drive through their office, family, school, church or temple group, scout troop or civic organization. Singing chef to dissect the tomato

ENCINITAS ---- Quail Botanical Gardens will host the "You Say Tomato, I Say Lycopene" cooking class with opera singing chef Elizabeth Podsiadlo from 1:30-4 p.m. Aug. 30 at the garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Students will learn how to make roasted tomato salsa; how to stuff a tomato; and how to create a perfect-for-summer bread stick studded with sun-dried tomatoes and herbs (all dishes are vegetarian).
