Neither Cruisin' nor Grand

The new format will kill Cruisin' Grand, especially since there is no more Cruisin'. Just another lame car show now with the same old, mostly boring cars that have been showing up for years. It is now neither Grand nor Cruisin'.

This had been an event that got the people of Escondido out on a Friday evening to mingle, shop, cruise by in their cars, etc., with a so-so car show thrown in. It had been a signature event for all of Escondido and North County. Not now. The DBA has ruined it.

I'm a car collector and sometimes exhibitor and have an endless choice of car shows to go to. I pass, since they're boring and lack the kind of interaction with the larger community that has made CG so great. The DBA has figured out how the Soviets would have done a car show. They now have a lousy event and a lousy show. The better part of the show has always been the cars actually cruisin' –– not the same old tired stuff parked along Grand by owners with nothing better to do than get their spot at 3 p.m. on a Friday.

Congratulations to the DBA. It usually takes more than a single day to ruin something this good, but they've done it.

Ranchers against Powerlink

The North County Times is correct in stating farmers are concerned about the impacts of the proposed Sunrise Powerlink ("SoCal farmers angry about proposed power line path," Aug. 15). But there is more to the story.

The San Diego-Imperial Counties Cattleman's Association also opposes this harmful project for many reasons. First and foremost, we don't need it. The California Public Utilities Commission named feasible alternatives that are reliable, affordable and better for the environment.

Second, this line increases backcountry fire risk in areas already heavily threatened. Finally, it threatens food safety, as introducing humans and access roads into remote ranching areas can introduce pathogens to cattle. The Sunrise Powerlink is not the best way to power our region –– look at what happened to our water supply when we relied on imported water. It would be a shame to see our ranches and private lands, many of which have been in families for generations, needlessly ruined for a utility corporation's private gain.

Farrah Douglas, an American lioness

On a recent visit to CDS Printing in Carlsbad, I noticed a campaign poster for the owner, Farrah Douglas. Farrah is running for Carlsbad City Council. I asked her husband, Rick, "Do you have bumper stickers? I'll put one on!" He handed me their newly printed campaign handouts, and since then, I have offered them to everyone I could identify as a Carlsbad resident.

When an individual of Farrah's demonstrated capability and character offers herself as a candidate, the least I can do for Carlsbad is help her win. Farrah Douglas is a true friend to Carlsbad, and a recipient of many prestigious awards honoring her voluntary service. Her reasoned consideration of issues has landed her on several boards, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Boys and Girls Club, Casa de Amparo, Hi-Noon Rotary to name a few. These organizations have benefited from her objective insights, vision for the future, creative solutions and hard work.

Farrah seeks methods in which Carlsbad residents can embrace two large issues –– social responsibility and fiscal stability. For Farrah, citizenship is a verb! As a Carlsbad City Council member, Farrah Douglas will protect our quality of life in Carlsbad, and we can all vote for that.

Gasoline is a bargain

My grandmother was a hard-bitten farm wife who milked their cows and churned butter from the milk in her own kitchen in the 1920s (I'm 87). More than once I heard her say, "A pint's a pound the world around." If that was a truism then, it undoubtedly is today. Of course, some liquids are heavier or lighter than others, but the saying generally is a good guide.

On that basis, if one pint is one pound, then two pints (one quart) are two pounds, and four quarts (one gallon) weighs about eight pounds. With today's price of gasoline at around $4 a gallon, one quart of it should cost about $1, which would make a pint of it (one pound) cost about 50 cents. That's what most of us are paying: about 50 cents a pound for our gasoline. Now, what else can you buy for 50 cents a pound today that fulfills a need and, at the same time, gives so much pleasure? Doesn't that make you feel a lot better? I hope it does, and I hope you have a nicer day!

Paranoia on Iraqi refugees

Leon Smith (Letters, Aug. 23) seems about to blow a gasket over the admission of Iraqi refugees into the U.S. His paranoid dismissal of such a proposal obfuscates some basic truths, which he seems unable to grasp.

First, the Taliban does not exist in Iraq, nor does Iraq share a border with the country they really do operate in, Afghanistan. Second, al-Qaida will never "take over" Iraq, as the Iraqi people have themselves shown –– something about foreign religious radicals trying to kill anyone they could was unappealing to the Iraqi populace, hence the strong backlash and "Anbar awakening" against al-Qaida.

Finally, the U.S. does have a moral obligation to do something about the massive internal and external displacement of Iraqis, an issue that has been largely ignored. Part of the solution to this regional problem, a problem created by our decision to invade, must by a rational and moral analysis include the admission of some of these millions of refugees into our country. Even Smith's inflated number of 60,000 seems an inadequate response –– after all, are we not still a nation open to "those huddled masses yearning to be free?"

AP becoming Fox news

I used to work for the Associated Press in Boston ... so when I recently began reading AP's Ron Fournier's coverage articles ("Analysis: Biden pick shows lack of confidence"), I was outraged at the bias toward McCain. He has, in my opinion, consistently been favoring Republicans at the expense of fair coverage for the Democrats. And although San Diego County has many registered Republicans, the number of Democrats has been steadily, and rapidly, increasing in the past two years –– to the point that they are now much closer to 50/50.

For this reason, I request that the North County Times seriously consider letting the AP know that Ron Fournier's coverage bias is not all right and that readers of the North County Times demand truly fair, and as close to objective, coverage of the issues related especially to this election campaign. Better, fairer coverage will increase trust of the North County Times, journalists and the overall integrity of the mainstream media in the U.S.

I urge you to reach out to the AP and remind them that they are not Fox News and that we the readers notice and do not appreciate partiality of this kind. We simply won't tolerate it and will find other sources to get our news from.

No excuse for not drilling

An acute shortage of oil exploration sites and refineries in the United States has led to exorbitant fuel prices. We now pay nearly $4 per gallon of gasoline and $4.50 per gallon of diesel fuel. This impacts everyone in our society, most of all those who can least afford it.

Politicians advocating a windfall profits tax on American oil companies are disingenuous. Our federal and state governments each impose an 18 cent-per-gallon tax on every gallon of gasoline sold in California, whereas the oil companies that import, extract, refine and transport said gasoline to our filling stations receive only 9 cents profit per gallon. Essentially, our federal and state governments make twice the profit of oil companies without assuming any of the risks or doing any of the work involved in bringing that fuel to market. That is highway robbery! And the state tax on diesel fuel is twice that imposed on gasoline!

Oil drilling techniques are now so advanced that their environmental impact is negligible. There is simply no rational excuse for not exploiting our natural resources: Oil is the lifeblood of America's economic engine. Please contact your elected senators and representatives and express your opinion on this matter.

Democrats responsible?

It was laughable to read Ms. Young's letter (Aug. 24) blaming the Democrats for high gas prices. It was the Bush administration who, by waging and threatening war in the Mideast, has disrupted production and distribution of oil. It is the Republicans who continue to obstruct funding and development of alternative fuels. It is the Republicans who blocked any increase in miles-per-gallon CAFE standards, which would result in less consumption and decreased costs. It is the Republicans who continue to grant huge subsidies to the oil and gas industry, which pocket the revenues without building new refineries or drilling on land they are already permitted to. It was Bush, who through his swaggering rhetoric and actions, alienated the countries of Russia, Venezuela and Iran on which we depend for oil, and it is a stalwart, lifelong Republican, T.Boone Pickens, who emphatically states we "cannot drill our way out" of the oil crisis.

Stop blaming Democrats for the failures of the past eight years during which 2.5 million have become unemployed, 8.6 million more are without health insurance, 4.9 million more are living in poverty and the deficit has risen to $710 billion. It is time for a change.

Raising a child is the noblest sacrifice

First Zoltan Lucas (Letters, Aug. 23) complained that the North County Times focused on the topic of abortion at the Saddleback Forum, and then proceeded to devote his entire letter to that same issue. He does, however, have his first fact wrong. Barack Obama is not against abortion. In the forum, he stated "I am pro-choice."

Zoltan Lucas then goes on to quote Jesus' words "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me." Who actually is the "least of these?" Does he believe that Jesus would condone abortion under any circumstances? When he accuses pro-life voters of "imposing their Scriptures on others," does he consider that abortion by definition denies the baby any say in the procedure?ˇ

He quotes John McCain's statement that America's greatest shortcoming is a "failure to devote ourselves to causes greater than our self-interests." Isn't raising a child always a cause greater than our self-interest? Isn't it the noblest sacrifice of life? And for those who are too young or financially unable to raise a child, wouldn't adoption again be a noble sacrifice? It seems that Zoltan Lucas is the one who is trying to find justification for forcing his views on others.

Not ready for the Democrats' kind of change

Regarding the Democratic convention: Wow, the sob stories and the promises just about made me sick. And who's going to pay for the health care and benefits that Michelle promised, mirroring the words from her husband?

I've had just about enough of the negativism coming from the Democrats, and how terrible this country is and how they're going to save us all! As a hard-working American, I'm not ready for the kind of change the Democrats want to bring to this great country.

The socialists will control us

Obama will become president. A Socialist coalition of Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Kennedy and Schumer will eliminate the Second Amendment. They will then ban the possession of handguns, as in Australia and the U.K. Shotguns OK, for a short time, then they will be banned as in Australia and the U.K. Rifles are OK for a short time, except only approved rifles will be allowed. No air guns, no swords. No personal protection allowed. Injure the home invader or assaulter and you go to jail, as in Australia and the U.K. Home invasion and assaults increase dramatically, as in Australia and the U.K. Fantasy? Read California gun laws, if you have a week or so. What happened in Washington, D.C, San Francisco and Chicago before the courts intervened? Handgun possession was banned.

Socialists want to protect us by removing our ability to protect ourselves. If this is just one of the results of a Democratic control of presidency, Congress and Senate, and it is what you desire, vote for Obama.

4-H animals live for profit

Regarding "4-H member tells truth about animals at fair," Letters, Aug. 23: Please don't assume that only vegans object to 4-H's lack of compassion for market animals. How are market animals different from any other animal? Has trust, fear and pain been bred right out of them? No rationalization can negate the fact that loving, sentient animals are abandoned and brutally killed. Until 4-H members are willing to witness their animals' abject terror and betrayal at the end, they will continue to try to pass off their organization as humane. The truth is, 4-H animals live and die for profit.

McCain thinks he can pay for his tax breaks for CEOs and oil companies by eliminating earmarks. Pretty obvious you only read what you wanted to read. This will take some time to understand what he is saying. Heck, what a lot of people know.

You have to think of a bill coming, think of a ballon payment on your home. You know it's coming, and you can do one of two things. You can plan for it, save for it.. Or you can panic when the bill lands, which is exactly what this Government, and the 19 different Congress before us did. Look it up.

And I fear, you are talking some relief in the idea that the $53 trillion obligation in the future. Well, so is the $9 trillion. We sold bonds to foreign countries to finance our deficit. The type of bonds I'm talking about can not be sold to outsiders, this is a inter-governmental debt. One administration owing the other. No one but Congress can ever pay this debt to Social Security.
Now, you saw it's in the future, and so it's far off, we still have time. yadda-yadda-yadda. You deceive yourself my friend. Walker is an old hat at.. shall we say.. being able to political select his wording, without causing a panic. As we saw when Chucky Schumer-D leaked about Indy Mac. Walker wants to prevent a panic by Americans, yet at the same time, he needs to start educationing people as to what is coming.
You seem to think that only taxes will take care of this? I think you are wrong, based upon my reading of Walker, plus many other's.
Think about howmuch this is: $54 trillion. Our national GDP each year is about $12 trillion. If we took every red nickel from every single American for 3 years straight we would cover this debt. But, we would stop our economy, and would not have an economy beyond that.
Further, our national budget is only $3 trillion, compared to $54 trillion. With all monies dedicated only towards SS & MediCare, that would be about 18 year payoff, with nothing else being paid for, no defense, no education, no HUD, no Homeland security, FEMA, nothing..
Go back, and try to review his numbers about where the money needs to come from. I think you'll find he has done yeoman's work here, on pointing out, that if we took every dime for "the Rich", we still would not even be close to meeting these debt obligations.

Men alwats vote for Republicans (white and Hispanic men) while women usually vote Democrat. Nonetheless, Obama leads McCain by a point or two with women and lost many with his choice for VP when he should have named Clinton or sibelius.

It's over, married women will vote heavily for McCain/Pallin and that's all he needs.

McCain has a Marine son in Iraq. Ms Pallin's Army son is on his way to Iraq. Veterans will not vote for Obama who didn't even serve in high school ROTC.

Of the four candidates, only Pallin has executive experience as the governor of a major oil state. Before she beat a Republican incumbent for Governor she was the chair of the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission, an agency far more important that California’s PUC which is very important in its own right. Every Alaska resident gets a yearly oil royalty check and she was in charge of that. She knows oil and she beat the oil companies over the head. She ahs more experience than Biden and Obama combined in running a government.

I am so proud of my man McCain. His choice of Pallin is inspired and brilliant.

It's over! McCain will run away with the election. Oorah!!!

Nick wrote on Aug 29, 2008 10:13 AM:The letter from Mervyn Hoover Jr. touches on the subject of The 2nd Amendment being threatened by socialists hiding in Democrat clothing, and he is correct.

Our Constitutional Rights are being chipped away at little by little and to many folks don't seem to see the writing on the wall.

Take for instance the fact that our unalienable right to peaceable discussion and dissent is being abridged on a daily basis. Your right gather peaceably and associate in advocacy of your own self-defence, according to your own free will, has already been outlawed.
This has been accomplished by the ADL's Anti-Militia Legislation.

Did you know that right now today, twenty-four states have anti-militia laws?

This is in DIRECT violation of our right to freedom of association that is grounded in the First Amendment freedoms of "speech, assembly, and petition." It protects "the right of individuals to combine with other persons in pursuit of a common goal by lawful means."

By forbidding people from associating as an unauthorized military organization, anti-militia laws obviously affect the right to political association

"I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effectual way to enslave them." George Mason during Virginia's Convention to ratify The Constitition, (1788).

"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms ... disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes ... Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." -- Thomas Jefferson (1764) -- Quoting 18th Century criminologist Cesare Beccaria in On Crimes and Punishment

Cheers, Nick.

OBAMACAN wrote on Aug 29, 2008 10:14 AM:McCain's desperation has now become obvious.
As is typical of Republicanism, instead of boldly charting his own course, he has to REACT to Democrats' choices. Obama didn't pick Hillary? He'll choose a woman.
He thinks that Hillary supporters only supported her because of her female anatomy?
How patronizing!
Hillary's strong suit, that attracted her supporters and the respect of those who supported Obama, was her extensive experience.
How does McCain think choosing a very young lady, whose totality of "experience" is that she was mayor of a small town of 8,000 people and less than two years as governor of the smallest (in population) and most homogenous state in the union, and with no national or international experience at all, can attract those who valued the experience and unique qualifications of a Hillary Clinton.
The good news is, this pathetic act of desperation - this ultimate hail Mary pass - means that no more can any McCain supporter accuse Obama of lacking "experience."
And judgment?
McCain was wrong on Iraq, wrong on the economy, and wrong to abandon his previous maverick positions. And now, in his first big decision as a presidential candidate, he does not act but reacts, and he shows fear and desperation while insulting and patronizing the women he hopes to attract.

There is real pain at the pump, and those who simply dismiss the suffering of real Americans as if they are a "nation of whiners" (hmmm, where have I heard that before) show who the real elitists are.
And Richard Wible shows his complete failure to grasp simple basics. Gas is $4 a gallon because energy policy is being crafted right from the oilmen in the White House for their cronies who are benefitting from those high gas prices and from defense contracts. The war for oil benefits the oil companies, and they don't care how many of the "little people" die on battlefields so they can line their pockets.
Don't the conservatives understand supply and demand? When there is less demand, the price will drop. Those of us who are using alternative energy sources are reducing the demand. We are the ones who are lowering the price of oil. And the mere threat from Democrat Al Gore calling for a ten-year energy independence program and Republican T. Boone Pickens calling for alternative energy industries, was enough to strike panic into the hearts of oil speculators and drive down the price of oil futures, thus easing the pain at the pump.
Feeding the addiction will not cure it.
Alternative energy sources to compete with oil and reduce demand will ease pain at the pump.

Obama, since the VP choice of O'Biden, has been bleeding married women, and some unmarried women.
These are the PUMA's. They are not happy, and now, with Hilster calling the role vote to soon, they are infuriated. Some have already voiced a "liking" of McCain, now.. this seals the deal.
The Democrats, for reasons of making a historical comment about themselves, Mascot politics, have chosen an under qualified black man, instead of a more qualified woman candidate. And now, they ALL know it.
So now, the long knives for Gov. Palin will come out, they WILL be seen as "picking on the girl", and it will sow up the McCain vote by these disaffected democrat women.
You see, they too, wanted history to be made. The correct choice, and everyone knew it, was Hillary Clinton as VP.
But, the Dem's have chucked her overboard, for an older, more inside the belt-way player.
And surely, as Obama's inexperience comes into view, he will be less qualified than Palin. She's had executive experience, Obama was a community organizer. That's hardly a choice.

When Jesus referred to "the least of these" (Matt 25:31-46) he was talking about real human persons who had been born: those who are hungry, thirsty, without clothing, homeless, strangers, and those in prison. Elsewhere, he expressed compassion for those who were most despised: lepers, prostitutes, tax collectors, and the hated enemies the Samaritans.
While any speculation is pure conjecture since Jesus never said anything on the subject, I can much more easily envision Jesus' compassion for the poor, unwed mother with an unwanted pregnancy than for a fetus that has no feelings, no sentience, no consciousness and, as TFB has pointed out, doesn't even have measurable EEG brain waves.

Absolutely nuts, as if just being female will override the Hillary-lovers' feelings about Roe and about fundamentalism. Now Ron, be serious for just a moment. Some of McCain's biggest claims had to do with the need for a strong, experienced commander in chief. Ron: what's your opinion of Ms Palin as a commander-in-chief? As an experienced leader? In what areas of expertise or knowledge or skill will she fill out the McCain weak spots? Ron: an invitation: instead of yammering about socialists and Rev Wright, spend on of your long posts talking about all your opinions of Ms Palin. Thanks in advance.

So Ron what youre saying wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:45 PM:Ron says the "liberals" won't back Palin even though she is female and has accomplishments, proving that all they care about is their liberal stances. Just as for you, these things probably don't matter as long as their views on policies are the most important thing. That's what a rational voter does. But you, Ron, present this as though the "liberals" are some kind of evil hypocrites for voting by policies and principles instead of by color or gender. Once again, Ron battles the "liberal" of his imagination, the purely straw liberal. When a liberal says she is suspicious of big oil, and then we see a VP pick who is in the pocket of big oil, our liberal is suspicious of that VP pick. What's the VP pick's gender or color? What's that got to do with it? (And yes, the exact same idea applied to Clarence Thomas. This is only hard to grasp if you are not attending to reality.)

Nick wrote on Aug 29, 2008 12:47 PM:Well "Gotta Wonder", the last time I checked it was the Demorats trying to Socialize things, so I would have to call that socialist.

"Socialism refers to any of various economic and political concepts of state or collective (i.e. public) ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods and services, some of which have been developed into more or less highly articulated theories and/or praxis.
In a Marxist or labor-movement definition of the term, socialism is a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done with the goal of creating a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community."
[Wikipedia - just for you "Gracchus, not that I actually give a rats behind]

Apparently you have never heard of the Social Democrat Party that dominated much of Europe in the 30's, 40's and 50's.

"...a socialist policy is abhorrent to the British ideas of freedom. Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."
[Winston Churchill - Election campaign speech 1945]

Again "Gotta Wonder", the last time I checked, it was Democrats constantly trying to pass more and more gun laws and bans in DIRECT conflict with The 2nd Amendment, not Republicans.

You try and claim that Obama & Demorats will restore this once great Country. That has got to be one of the biggest jokes I have heard yet.

BOTH, The Democrat and Republican Parties are responsible for chipping away at our inalienable rights guaranteed us under The Constitution. NEITHER Party will restore this Great Country because NEITHER Party actually care about The Constitution or "We the People".
You go ahead and keep believing in the Democrats and I'll keep believing in Frosty, Santa and the Tooth Fairy.

First, if abortion was not generally known in Jesus' time, then if you believe he was God / the Son of God, who knows all things, should he not have been able to foresee the time when this would be an issue?
Second, your assumption is just a guess and it is incorrect. Abortion was known and practiced in Bible times. As now, there were some who wrote against it and some who supported it. That the Bible is silent in opposing abortion seems to have been an intentional decision to leave it up to each person.
There is only one place in the Bible that can be interpreted as dealing directly with the subject of abortion, and that is Numbers 5:12-28, in which it permits abortion by drinking "bitter water" (a mixture of black cohosh and pennyroyal that was the preferred method of abortion in those days) to terminate a pregnancy if the man suspected his wife to have been impregnated by someone other than himself.
As usual, it was the men making the "choice" over their wives, their chattel property.
The Bible is replete with references to birth, pregnancy, children and life - any one of which would have been the perfect opportunity to address the subject - but they didn't!
