Lake Poway open Labor Day

POWAY ---- The Lake Poway Recreation Area will be open Labor Day, Sept. 1. Fishing and boating will be available from 7 a.m. to sunset. All park areas will be open and available on a first-come, first-served basis. The Lake Poway Grill and Tackle will be open for buying day-use permits for the lake, fishing licenses, boat rentals, and food and beverages.

Lake Poway is open for fishing and boating from 7 a.m. to sunset Wednesdays through Sundays and holidays through September. The park areas are open daily during the same hours. In addition, night fishing is offered from 4-11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 6.

Safe driving class offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council will offer a two-part AARP "55 Alive" safe driving class from 8 a.m.-noon Sept. 2 and 9 in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway.

Upon completion, seniors will receive a certificate good for three years entitling them to a reduction in the cost of their auto insurance. Cost is $10, payable by check only to AARP.

RB Chorale invites new members

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The RB Chorale will kickoff its 35th season with its "Forever Christmas" show in December and is seeking new members. New members can join through Sept. 30. The first rehearsal will be Sept. 2. New members should arrive at 7 p.m. to complete registration. No auditions are required. There are openings for sopranos, altos, and especially tenors and basses.

Rehearsals are held at Westwood Elementary School, 17449 Matinal Road, Rancho Bernardo. Performances of "Forever Christmas" are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 19 and 20, and 2 p.m. Dec. 21 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts.

Continuing Education Center plans open house

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Continuing Education Center at Rancho Bernardo will begin its fall programs with a gala open house from 3-5 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Remington Club II, 16916 Hierba Drive. -- 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10: Dr. Dennis Rohatyn will begin a four-part series on author and historian Henry Adams. Other dates in the series are Sept. 17, 24 and Oct. 1.

-- 1:30 p.m. Sept. 11: Dr. William Cheek will begin a four-part series on Abraham Lincoln titled "Unscrambling the Many Myths of America's Greatest President." Other dates in the series are Sept. 18, 25 and Oct. 2.

CSUSM Arts & Lecture Series to begin

SAN MARCOS ---- Cal State San Marcos' fall Arts & Lectures Series will run from Sept. 3-Dec. 3. Admission is free but seating is limited. Upcoming events:

-- "United & Severed: That Window of Time" media art installation, 2 p.m. Sept. 3, California Center for the Arts, Escondido. The exhibit is based on the experiences of women living with traumatic injury.

-- "2nd Encuentro de Jaraneros 'Cultivando El Son'," 6 p.m. Sept. 4, CSUSM Commons Building, Room 206. Performance and round table discussion on the traditional folk music from Southern Veracruz, Mexico called son jarocho.

-- "Not Too Early, Never Too Late," noon Sept. 8, CSUSM Clarke Field House, Room 113. Video in the Community will present a screening of this gang prevention video produced at CSUSM and funded by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. A discussion will follow. Refreshments.

Free hike set for Sept. 6

SAN MARCOS ---- The city's Community Services Department will offer the first in a series of free fall Discover San Marcos hikes from 9 a.m.-noon Sept. 6. Hike the trails south of Walnut Grove Park with an optional side trek on the Owens Peak trail segment. The easy-to-moderate hike is 4 to 7 miles.

Meet near the Williams Barn in Walnut Grove Park, corner of Sycamore and Olive drives. Sign in at meeting location; no reservations necessary. An adult must accompany all minors. All dogs must be on a maximum 6-foot leash at all times. Participants should bring water and trail snacks. Wearing waffle-soled shoes is recommended.

Children's Museum plans toy sale

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Children's Museum will hold its annual Toy Sale from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the museum at the north end of Grape Day Park, 380 N. Escondido Blvd. Nearly new toys will be sold at great prices. To donate toys for the sale, bring them to the museum before Sept. 4. A tax donation form will be provided.

Gem and Mineral Show on tap

Healthy living fair set for Sept. 6

SAN MARCOS ---- To promote healthy living, Cal State San Marcos and the San Marcos Community Services Department will present the "Because I Care Community Fair" from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 6 at the San Marcos Senior Center, 111 Richmar Ave.

The free event will offer information to enhance physical and mental health, as well as services for those who care for aging family members. There will be educational workshops, a 1-mile walk starting at 9 a.m., arts and crafts, entertainment and a classic car show. Educational workshops topics include healthy eating, caregiver stress, Alzheimer's research, heart disease and veterans benefits.

Divorce recovery program offered

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Church at Rancho Bernardo will host a 14-week divorce recovery program for adults called "Divorce Care" from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays starting Sept. 8 at the church, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. The program is designed to help participants grow through their divorce as they go through it. The series is also for those who are still suffering with unresolved issues from a past divorce.

Library Friends to host author

ESCONDIDO ---- Local author and philanthropist Edna Sahm will be the featured speaker for the Friends of the Escondido Public Library's annual event at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Turrentine Room at the Escondido Public Library, 239 S. Kalmia St.

Sahm's book, "Ninety Years and Loving it," not only records the progression of American society and civilization over a 90-year span but chronicles her own "rags to riches" journey ---- overcoming a disadvantaged and orphaned childhood to become an elegant, affluent philanthropist.

Knights of Columbus plan luau

ESCONDIDO ---- The Knights of Columbus will hold their Fall Luau on Sept. 20 at Knights of Columbus Hall, 515 W. Valley Parkway. SD Watercolor Society to hold show

POINT LOMA ---- The San Diego Watercolor Society presents an exhibit of original watercolor mixed-media paintings titled "Time to Experiment" from Sept. 3-26 at its gallery in the Liberty Station NTC Promenade.

The show's juror is award-winning artist, teacher and society member Claire-Lise Matthey Anderegg of Rancho Penasquitos. The public is invited to a reception from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 5.
