'Beauty and the Beast' auditions set

Lancer art show planned

CARLSBAD ---- A reception honoring the first Lancer Pride Art Show will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sept. 5 in the lobby of the Carlsbad Community Cultural Arts Center, 3557 Lancer Way.

The exhibit, an art collection comprising more than 20 works created by students for Carlsbad High's annual fall and spring student art shows over the past 15 years, is sponsored by the CHS Parent Association and the school's visual and performing arts department. The purpose of the exhibit is to promote funding for the department's scholarship program.

A number of the artists will attend the reception. Harpist Kate Loughrey will provide music; refreshments will be served. Admission is free; donations to the scholarship program will be accepted.

Kids can take part in Christmas show

ESCONDIDO ---- Rehearsals for a children's Christmas musical, "The Mystery of the Manger ---- It's the Gospel Truth," will begin at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in the fourth-grade room of Bethel Baptist Church, 855 Brotherton Road. Rehearsals will take place weekly, and children in first through fifth grades are welcome to take part. The show will be performed at 6 p.m. Dec. 7. Materials are $10. SD Youth Philharmonic has openings

4S RANCH ---- High school musicians are invited to join the San Diego Youth Philharmonic. There are openings are openings in the string, brass, woodwind and percussion sections. Rehearsals will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 10 in the music room at Oak Valley Middle School, 16055 Winecreek Road.

Music programs offered

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias, offers free musical programs for youths in third grade through high school. Students do not have to be church members to participate.

The Village Cherub Choir, for children age 3 through third grade, meets from 5:15-6 p.m. Thursdays, followed by dinner and "Mozart Math," which teaches math and music theory concepts using classical music. The only requirements are consistent attendance and a once-a-month Sunday morning commitment.

The Village Junior Choir, for second- through sixth-graders, meets from 6-7 p.m. Thursdays. The choir sings in worship once a month, performs for outreach activities and presents two musicals each year.

The CrossWinds Youth Choir, for seventh- through 12th-graders, meets from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Sundays. The group sings in worship monthly and performs for outreach activities regularly. Students can receive school community service credit. In June, CrossWinds will travel to Washington, D.C., to sing in a choir festival at the National Cathedral. Scholarships are available for the trip.

VHS band and pageantry hold concert

VISTA ---- The Vista High School Regimental Band and Pageantry Corps held its annual debut concert Aug. 23 at Dick Haines Stadium on campus.

The group performed a preview of this year's competitive field show, "Icarus." The show will be performed this fall at six tournaments throughout Southern California, including its own 27th annual Vista Invitational Field Tournament on Nov. 15.

Last year, the tournament was attended by more than 5,000 people, and more than 30 bands are expected to perform at this year's event. Advertising space is available in this year's tournament program. Proceeds will benefit the tournament and advertising costs are tax deductible. Abrakadoodle classes offered

FALLBROOK ---- New Abrakadoodle classes for toddlers and preschoolers will begin Sept. 15 at the Fallbrook School of the Arts.

"My First Art Class," for children 20 months to 3 years, will be held from 9:30-10:15 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 15-Oct. 27, session one; Mondays, Nov. 3-Dec. 15, session two. Children will take part in painting, gluing, sticking, printing and creating while developing fine motor, language and self-help skills. Cost is $78 per session, materials included.

"Lil' Art Explorers," for ages 3 to 5, will introduce a new artist or technique each session. Classes will be held from 10:30-11:15 a.m. Mondays, Sept. 15-Oct. 13, session one; Nov. 3-Dec. 15, session two. Cost is $78 per session, materials included.

In "Let's Go Green," for ages 7 and older, students will use recyclable materials and their imaginations to staple, hammer, glue, glitter, paint and make collage artwork. Children will be encouraged to collect recyclables from home to bring to class. Classes will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 6-27. Cost is $75 per session.

'Guys and Dolls Jr.' auditions set

SAN DIEGO ---- The Joan B. Kroc School of Performing Arts, 6805 University Ave., will hold auditions by appointment for "Guys and Dolls Jr." from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 16.

Besides several featured roles, the musical has several singing and dancing ensembles. Auditioners should prepare a one-minute segment of a song, and bring sheet music or a CD for accompaniment. Youths ages 4 to 19 are welcome to audition. Callbacks will be Sept. 18; rehearsals will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays; performances will be Dec. 10-14. Studio to offer voice classes

VISTA ---- First Steps in Music, 2141 Industrial Court, Suite F, offers voice classes for ages 8 and older from 6-7 p.m. Wednesdays. The ongoing classes will begin with fundamental vocal technique (breathing, warm-up exercises and diaphragm support) and progress to performance skills (interpretation, stage presence and microphone technique).

Pine needle basketry class offered

ENCINITAS ---- The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will offer an Introduction to Pine Needle basketry class for ages 11 and older from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive.

Carol Lang will teach students to use local natural materials, transforming yard waste into functional vessels.

Cost is $60; $55 for museum members. An additional $10 materials and preparation fee will be paid directly to the teacher at the beginning of the class. Bring sharp scissors.

'Nutcracker' auditions planned

SAN MARCOS ---- Auditions for New West Ballet Theatre's 29th production of "The Nutcracker" will be held Sept. 5 and 6 at New West's studio, 960 Rancheros Drive.

The ballet will be performed Nov. 28-30 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts. Children and adults, amateur and professional, will perform. There are about 65 roles in the show, with paid positions for professionals.

Auditions for children will be held Sept. 6 at 2 p.m. for ages 4-7; 3 p.m. for ages 8-10; and 4:30 p.m. for ages 11 and older. Advanced dancers will audition at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 5 (pointe shoes recommended for advanced dancers). Auditioners should arrive 15 minutes early.

Audition processing fee is $60, which will be refunded if the dancer is not selected.

Performing Arts Workshop registering students

Musical revue auditions set

CARLSBAD ---- Youths ages 6 through seniors in high school are invited to audition for Carlsbad Community Theatre's 25th anniversary musical revue.

The culmination of a workshop, the show will feature actors and musical soloists, and a chorus of dancers and singers. Participation in the production fulfills the eligibility requirement for future Carlsbad Community Theatre productions.

Auditions will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. for ages 6-9, and 6:30-8 p.m. for ages 10 and older Sept. 2 in Room 101 and 102 at Valley Middle School, 1645 Magnolia Ave.

Participants should come prepared to sing a one-minute, 16-bar song, or perform a short monologue of one minute or less. An accompanist will be available for singers. Auditioners without music to perform will be provided with a piece to sing. Performers should bring a photo that does not need to be returned and a calendar with possible rehearsal conflicts, and be prepared to dance.

There is no audition fee. Cast members will pay a $150 production fee, which includes a T-shirt, cast photo and party. Rehearsals will be held between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. three times a week on weekdays and some Saturdays starting Sept. 9 at various Carlsbad locations. Performance dates are Oct. 17-18.

'Seussical' auditions planned

ESCONDIDO ---- Center Stage Productions will hold auditions for ages 6-18 for a youth-cast production of "Seussical" from 3-8 p.m. Sept. 16 in the auditorium at L.R. Green School, 3115 Las Palmas Ave.

Auditioners should be accompanied by a parent, come prepared to sing for one minute, and bring a cued accompaniment tape or CD and a current resume. Callbacks will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the same location.

Rehearsals will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Sept. 23, with a break during the holidays. Performances are scheduled for March 13-15 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.

Registration fee is $250 through Sept. 9; $275 thereafter. Sibling discounts available; financial aid information available upon request.
