Linens 'n Things will close North County location

Linens and Things, an anchor store in the Vista Village Shopping Center, is closing. (Photo by Don Boomer - Staff Photographer) VISTA ---- Struggling national retailer Linens 'n Things will shutter its Vista location, one of the anchor stores in the Vista Village shopping center, as part of a wave of store closures, according to city and company officials.
It's not clear when the home furnishings store will shut its doors, but signs advertising the closure are on display.
"There will be an orderly wind down of business over the next few months with the going-out-of-business sale," Richard Tauberman, spokesperson for Linens 'n Things, said in an e-mail Thursday.
Kevin Ham, Vista's economic development director, said he only recently learned of the closure.
The city is working with Regency Centers, operator of the Vista Village center, to find a new tenant for the 30,000-square-foot building connected to Frazier Farms grocery store, Ham said Wednesday.
"We'll find a replacement that's as good if not better than the current tenant," Ham said, though he declined to say what stores, if any, the city had contacted or whether the city was looking for the same type of store.
The Linens 'n Things building is the second largest in Vista Village, the city's showpiece shopping center. It's surpassed only by the 15-screen Krikorian Theatre.
At the end of 2007, Clifton, N.J.-based Linens 'n Things had 589 stores. When the company filed for bankruptcy in May, it announced that it would close 120 stores. The list has since grown by 57.
Linens 'n Things "conducted an extensive review of its stores from a profitability and contribution perspective and made the difficult decision to close an additional number of underperforming stores," Tauberman said. "Unfortunately, the Vista store was on that list."
Alexis Estes, manager of housewares department at the Vista location, said by phone Wednesday that employees there are largely in the dark about the company's plans.
"We know just as much as the public does," she said.
Vista's Linens 'n Things opened in 2005. Ham declined to give specific sales tax figures. The store is not on the published list of the top 25 sales tax generators in the city.

Oside Mom wrote on Sep 2, 2008 7:11 AM:That store never had a chance. It was competing against Bed Bath and Beyond just down the 78. I never really cared for Linens n Things.
ballot measure wrote on Sep 2, 2008 7:12 AM:maybe they should put a bond measure on the ballot so the homeowners can float another poorly planned business.
FUngo wrote on Sep 2, 2008 7:45 AM:Upscale?! You need to get out more. That was/is just a half step up from one section of a Kmart.
Upscale is in Carlsbad, not Beesta.
Carlsbad upscale wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:10 AM:Maybe Carlsbad was upscale 10 years ago but things do change. All of North County is changing and that includes Carlsbad. Look around and prepare yourself or move. The people who do have money are moving to Idaho, Montana, Central California, etc. If you are staying here and defending Carlsbad, you have your head in the sand.
to FUngo wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:15 AM:I have to agree with you. Gosh, get something decent in there-not another discount store. Please, please not another 99 cent store or Big Lots!! What kind of people are we trying to draw to North County?
Sign of the Times wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:19 AM:Another sign of this psychological recession that we are in. This is the beginning of a wave of stores that won't be able to sustain sales in this economy. With so many homes in foreclosure, home furnishings just aren't selling, so there has to be fallout. Unfortunately it is the dollar stores, Big Lots and low end retailers who will reign in the sales this holiday season because no one can afford to pay full retail.
To Carlsbad upscale wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:30 AM:Yeah, 10 years at least. Apparently intelligence is not a requirement to post. Yeah, all the rich Carlsbad folks are moving to Fresno and Nampa. The Forum and Carlsbad Premium Outlets don't exist, and you really don't have to pay $800 for a McMansion there.
To Carlsbad upscale wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:38 AM:i think your the one with your head in the sand, Have you ever been to the forum shops ,or the premium outlets??
both in carlsbad???or are you too afraid to leave your house in oceana?
Curly wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:51 AM:Unfortunately this is where we are today. No more $5 Starbucks as well. The worst is yet to come too! The property owner will put in whatever outlet is willing to rent the place, so don't bother whining about another 99ยข Store. We are seeing the implosion of our once proud country folks.
TaxPayer wrote on Sep 2, 2008 10:13 AM:Anything to do with higher sales tax?
Old Timer wrote on Sep 2, 2008 10:51 AM:Linen & Things was always a bad fit for the Vista Village location and it could have been predicted that the first recession and a store like this is history. A Kohls that is a stand alone store would be a fit if there wasn't one on Oside /78. Considering that people go to this destination to eat and see a movie, I can't see why they would want to buy bath goods. Any future store should fit the crowd ...
Everyone Knows wrote on Sep 2, 2008 10:57 AM:Choices... Carlsbad with overcrowding, no parking, a high school almost losing accreditation, etc, etc. Face it, if the best is Carlsbad, all of North County is in trouble.
Again NCT fails wrote on Sep 2, 2008 11:08 AM:Again, NCT fails to promote intelligent comments and goes for the yellow journalism of confrontational cyber bullying. Anytime someone starts their comment with - TO - NCT needs to question that persons integrity and ability to stick to the facts of journalism. NCT needs to have a stated policy that it will not promote personal cyber attacks. If one does not have the intelligence to comment without getting personal, they need to keep their pithy solicitude to themselves.

Vista Carlsbad Oceanside wrote on Sep 2, 2008 11:39 AM:If your idea is to bad mouth a neighboring city for a loss of a store than your opiniion is way off the mark. We are all in this together and while you may believe you are above the possibility to fail, you need a reality check. The housing market, inflation, gas prices, etc, etc, AND our men in women dying in a far away country is more important than your 'my city is better than your city mentality'. Open your eyes and see real facts, not just beliefs and feelings (save those for church) as to where our country has been headed for the last 8 years.

Umm.. wrote on Sep 2, 2008 12:15 PM:Linens & Things? An 'anchor'? Thats a joke, no wonder it failed. You anchor a shopping center with a business that people use often, how often do you buy sheets and .. things?
Vista Village wrote on Sep 2, 2008 12:41 PM:was one of those grandiose ideas that sound great on paper and work only if everything goes right. But if you think about it....locating the ritzy shopping district there across the street from hobos and flea-trap motels wasn't such a great idea. Hopefully this will all work out and we won't get another boondoggle due to poor planning by the city/corporate cabal.

These blogs are ALL OK and we don't need anybody like you to act as a self-appointed censor. The very nature of blogs is to let everybody have their say so long as it's not libelous or vulgar. NCT does a good job of providing this forum for EVERYONE. Hey, if your little feelings are all hurt well, awwwwww. Look at something else then!
Mom of School-Age Kids wrote on Sep 2, 2008 3:05 PM:Why not put an indoor skate park in there to replace the closed one that was an outdoor only facility? That way, it could be better monitored than the old one that had problems with drugs/vandalism. They could charge a small admission fee and sell wall space to advertisers. It would also make it easier to monitor safety since noone could skate unless they had the proper equipment. Vista needs more places or older kids to go that have outgrown the swings and slides at the local park. This is the perfect opportunity. The Wave draws this demographic and so does the movie theatre/eateries in the area. It's a win-win for the city.
Heres an idea wrote on Sep 2, 2008 3:16 PM:How about a book store?
Vista Resident wrote on Sep 2, 2008 3:49 PM:I loved that Linens N Things -- and spent hundreds of dollars there this past year. They sell a lot more than sheets and blankets. I got an automatic jar opener there which I really love. And, I got another as a present for my parents. I got a boxed set of nesting plastic containers with tops that go on a lazy susan -- which totally organized my shelf space. I also got a folding drying rack really cheap -- so I don't need to use my dryer to dry my sheets anymore (that saves me money on energy). I got 2 collapsible plastic collanders -- which fit great in my dishwasher. They have really great stuff there. I also got some powered brushes to help with cleaning. Really sorry to see them go.
Oside Mom wrote on Sep 2, 2008 6:09 PM:I think the skate park idea is great. My kids don't skate, but I know a lot of kids that would love it. Great idea!
To Moms wrote on Sep 2, 2008 7:58 PM:Try to be a parent and don't just be one of those people who drop off their kids at the skate park..please. Get your kids involved in athletics in school or other extra curricular activities that are already out there. Skate parks are nice but not the answer for youth in the area. Parents have to do their part.
bookstore wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:36 PM:Whoever said a bookstore is spot on! A movie theater-anchored center is an ideal place for a bookstore, many have thrived in similar locations. But let's face it people, what we are seeing is the death of a number of stores that we grew up frequenting, which is natural in the evolution of retail. Our parents grew up with Newberry's, Wards, Bullocks and May Co., which have been replaced by Best Buy, (more) Bloomingdales Wal-Mart, etc. In every economic downturn there are retail casualties, some that overextended themselves with overambitious expansions (Krispy Kremes ring a bell?) or others that simply are trounced by competitors, which is the case of Linens n Things. Sears, K-Mart Circuit City and Mervyns are among the other giants that won't make it out of this downturn.
What does that mean for us the consumer? It means in the interim less competition for goods which will lead to more price mark ups and ultimately the market will demand that competition again, and ultimately give way to the rise of new retailers, just like how Best Buy took the US by storm during the late 1990s.
As for Vista Village, losing the Linens N Things will sting for a while, but hopefully the tenant coming in its place will continue to improve the reputation of the center.
Artsyrat wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:50 PM:Oopa. OK NC Times...someone is in need of a break or at least a lesson on editing blobs. Read my last comment at 4pm and see for yourself. Ooops.
Excuse me but wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:52 PM:..."upscale"? "Ritzy shopping district"? Is there another Vista Village out there that I've missed? Because the one I've seen isn't either of those things.
Grow up wrote on Sep 2, 2008 9:05 PM:wahhhh...carlsbad is better than your town...wahhhh....we have more money...wahhhh...and upscale stores...wahhh. go drink your bottle of whine and hush up.
To Get Involved wrote on Sep 3, 2008 12:25 AM:That all sounds great on paper...simply get your kids involved in extra curricular. The reality is that not everyone is cut out to be on baseball or soccer teams or even karate. There will always be skaters. (By the way, my kids don't skate). They need somewhere to go besides Burger King's parking lot! Alot of parents work (again not me), so kids need a central place they can congregate to stay out of trouble.
I just think Vista needs to address all of their citizens with replacing Linens N Things. A bookstore is great, but it normally attracts the 35 and older crowd. This leaves the youths skating in streets and parking lots which isn't favorable to the skaters or the businesses.
Artsyrat wrote on Sep 3, 2008 7:37 AM:I did not write the blog at 4pm. It is combined/mixed up with someone elses comment.
You are all too funny wrote on Sep 3, 2008 7:37 AM:Somebody suggests opening a skating rink to replace a linen store and we get diatribes on parental involvement? Some of you are looking for any reason to pick a fight.
Good luck getting any store at all to move in there. Retailers are contracting now. The last thing they want to do is add stores. It would take massive subsidies and concessions to get a retailer to open there.
Where is wrote on Sep 3, 2008 8:43 AM:Carlsbad's upscale shopping? Outlets (seconds and overstock?) and the Forum that's loaded with a lot of the same retail shops you'd find in any large mall? Please.
Yea and art store wrote on Sep 5, 2008 9:44 AM:An art store would be great. There is not one around and I would like to get my kids some crafts to work on. I think an art store would be very nice there.
Oside Mom wrote on Sep 5, 2008 11:46 AM:I don't think a Michaels would work. There are already 2 relatively new, large Michaels in the area. One down the 78 at El Camino Real and another off of Valley Parkway in Escondido.
If another department store goes in there they will have to choose something that isn't already down the road....I honestly can't think of a store that would work there.
I still think it would be a great place for some type of activity or entertainment. Or perhaps a combination. It might be too small for a skate park, but what about a rock climbing place? Or something a long those lines.
Artsyrat wrote on Dec 31, 1969 4:00 PM:So what should go in there? Instead of being so cynical in your comments why not suggest some appropriate businesses to fit that area.
