For fun and savings, visit a thrift store

As a kid, I was taken to thrift stores and didn't care for the atmosphere. Well, they've come a long way since. Most thrift stores are clean, air-conditioned and even have soft music. My grandsons love going to them, since I can afford anything they find.

My favorite one is in Oceanside, by Sizzler: a Goodwill store with some great buys, especially videotape movies for just 99 cents. In Vista, Escondido Boulevard and Santa Fe Road has even a greater variety, which include appliances and small furniture. The creme de la creme is in Escondido, where you have several thrift stores. The best one is Amvets (great prices and variety). The Salvation Army store on Washington/Broadway has furniture and appliances, big-time.

For fun and savings, visit a thrift store and have the time of your life.

Questionable voting practices at TCMC

Aug. 26 was a sad day at Tri-City Medical Center. Not because Proposition A failed to pass, but because democracy, as we know it, died. First, the representative of the registrar of voters informed us that she had a locked ballot box, no key, and that she had accepted ballots before the site opened. I had been observing for 15 minutes, waiting for the site to open, and nobody had approached. Then, they repeatedly accepted multiple ballots from one individual, having them sign where it said, in essence, "I am delivering this ballot for the above-signed person who is ill or incapacitated." I hadn't heard of any plague affecting the Oceanside area, but since the ROV accepted most ballots this way, it must be so.

ROV apparently considers TCMC one of its best clients. Clients? I thought they were constituents. So, accepting possibly fraudulent ballots, not showing the empty box at the outset ... smacked of no improprieties by the ROV, who explained, "This is a ballot drop-off, not a poll, and therefore we have no rules or regulations we are required to follow." Yes, it was a very sad day at TCMC.

Be careful, and obey the laws

Over the past 10 days, I have had three incidents when cars that were coming from behind me ignored my left-turn signal after I signaled to go into a left-turn lane. If I hadn't been watching in my rear-view mirror, there could have been collisions! I checked to make sure my turn signal is working, and it is. But, two of those three cars had women with cell phones held to their ears. One of them (out-of-state license) might be forgiven, but a second appeared to be a woman rushing to get to the gas station, probably so she could pick her kids up from school.

So, to the lady in a white SUV who pulled into the gas station at Mission and Broadway around 2:35 last Monday ““ please be more careful and obey the law, or your kids won't have anyone to pick them up! (I really wish I could report these license numbers, but I understand how that could be abused.)

Obama's tolerance of infanticide

"Pox upon right-to-life activists!" ... Dick West exemplifies the lack of compassion and "tolerance" touted by progressives/socialists (Letters, Aug. 27). Sadly, he betrays the mantra of the left, which continually invoke their superior concern for the most vulnerable of society.

Not surprisingly, many of the Obamatons on the left fall for the cliches of well-delivered speeches from the Obamessiah. Please, Barack-backers, explain Obama's votes against legislation that would have provided protection for babies who survive abortions equal to protection received by babies born prematurely. Even many committed pro-choicers are squeamishly uncomfortable with the thought of abandoning a child who survives an induced late-term abortion. Refusing to provide emergency medical care to abortion survivors is about choice ““ the choice to commit infanticide.

So, Dick, instead of hoping a pox boomerangs back on you, I will pray that you develop the compassion and "social justice" leftists like to talk about.

A hero too old to run the country?

In 2007, a law to allow airline pilots to keep flying until age 65 was passed. Before that, commercial airline pilots had to retire at age 60. I am now 64 years old, and I have been a pilot with a commercial license. I have now been a psychologist for 35 years. I understand how age takes a toll on your mental and physical abilities.

How can we allow someone who is 72 to run our country? How can he be in the most powerful position in the world, but not allowed to fly as a commercial airline pilot? ...

I was an officer in the military from 1969 until 1973 during the Vietnam War. During that time, many of us wanted to fly fighter jets. Only a few were allowed to do so. The majority of the troops were on the ground, losing their lives. Check the wall in Washington, D.C., and see how many names on the wall were pilots, and how many were ground troops. The chances of being killed on the ground were far greater than flying at 30,000 feet in a multimillion-dollar jet, while dropping napalm bombs on civilians. While all who have ever served in our military are to be commended, some who served made the world a better place, and some less so.

Is utility district losing money on sludge dryer?

The Fallbrook Public Utility District's press release, ("'Green' sludge dryer feted with engineering award," June 7), stated, "The chemicals and natural gas needed to run the (sludge) drying equipment are expected to cost about $75,000 a year." What about manpower costs? Continuous operating plants need operators for each weekly position for complete hourly coverage. Therefore, at least four FPUD (sludge drying) operators, plus one supervisor, are needed for weekly operation.

Using salaries of $15 an hour for five positions, minimum yearly costs would be $156,000, plus sick leave and holiday pay. Add costs of retirement, medical/dental insurance, electric utilities, taxes and plant maintenance, and FPUD's total sludge-drying costs far exceed $231,000 a year ($75,000, plus more than $150,000). Starting, stopping, operating batch-drying processes also requires manpower.

FPUD's reported savings from trucking wet sludge was either $72,000 or $150,000 per year without explanation. ... Using simple mathematics, it is obvious FPUD is losing thousands of dollars per year on this project. It is the result of the above calculations that I check FPUD's questionable information.

Writers don't understand what they are reading

Mr. Thomas Cowan (Letters, Aug. 14) and Mr. Ira Landis (Letters, Aug. 13) still don't understand what is in print. Valerie Plame had been a covert agent. A person remains covert for five years after leaving the position, then they are no longer covert and no longer protected.

Valerie Plame was an analyst at the time of being mentioned by Richard Armitage. Mr. Armitage came forth immediately and identified himself as being the one to mention Mr. Wilson. The paper reported her lawsuit was thrown out of court ("U.S. court won't resurrect lawsuit in CIA leak case," Aug. 13).

You will never convince me the administration had anything to do with 9/11. Such an evil thing to say. ... Landis proved he doesn't know what he's talking about. In his letter, he wrote, "I'm surprised Heldring's mole at the C.I.A. did not give her the true story." First, he knows not what a mole is, and secondly, it was my son, who was an analyst for 31 years. Yes, Haliburton was given a no-bid contract! They are the only company that provides the needed services to the military services. The only other company is French! I understand Clinton had to do the same thing.

GOP senators vote against saving lives

Regarding, "Texting ban likely coming in 2009," by Dave Downey, Aug. 23: In this article, I discovered yet another reason why I am a lifelong Democrat. State Sen. Dennis Hollingsworth (R-Murrieta), opposed to SB 28 that would outlaw text messaging while driving, states, "I don't think it's going to have any effect on the accident rates or the safety of the road." Since 9/11/01, upwards of 300,000 persons have been killed in motor vehicle accidents in our nation. Nearly all deadly accidents are caused by aggressive, out-of-control driving (such as tailgating and running red lights) or distracted driving (where eyes, ears and minds are not focused constantly in all directions from one's vehicle).

To think that 14 of 16 Republican state senators voted against SB 28 is incredible. To decrease the number of motor vehicle deaths in the nation by just 5 percent would save 10,000 lives every five years. In addition to text messagers, why can't we go after the obvious crazies racing their motorcycles on the freeways and winding roads? And thank God for MADD.

Shame on Tri-City bond opponents

I hope that all of you naysayers are happy. I also hope that you all have plans on where you will go when/if you ever need a hospital, because you probably will not have Tri-City to help you in the future ("Tri-City board backs administration after third bond loss," Aug. 29).

I am a nurse who works at Tri-City. I work in a unit with very small, critically ill infants. Our unit is in one of the older buildings that need updating. We have outgrown our space, but there is nowhere to expand us. ... The building is so old that the air conditioning/heating system doesn't work well, and there is no money to update it. The nurses literally swelter in the summer and freeze in the winter. We need fans blowing to help keep us cool, which is not really good for our infants, but it's either that or have nurses passing out from the heat.

If I had my way, we would close down all services in the hospital for 72 hours and let you people see what it is that you take so for granted. Shame on all of you for thinking about your pocketbook and less about the health and welfare of our community!

And they claim to be good neighbors

Granite Construction's overcharging San Diego millions of dollars for Rancho Bernardo fire debris cleanup, and then refusing to turn over original documents as requested, is not surprising, but it is another shining example of their incompetence, arrogance and questionable business ethics ("Complaints over debris cleanup tab unanswered," Union-Tribune, Aug. 10). And this, coming after their Aug. 15 $240,000 ““ yes, $240,000 ““ agreement with Oregon's DEQ for environmental damage, which Granite caused from hillside slippages ("A California contractor agrees to pay a $48,000 penalty and $192,000 to restore creeks dirtied while 7 miles of U.S. 20 was straightened," The Oregonian, Aug. 16). What they say and do often are quite different.

Granite's Project Manager for Rosemary's Mountain Quarry, Gary Nolan, stated in a "Good Neighbor" meeting that they would not blast on overcast days ““ yet, for the next two blasts it was either overcast or overcast and foggy. When questioned ... Granite stated that the EIR does not prohibit dynamiting under these conditions. Hmmm. Keep tabs on Granite Construction. They are far from being good neighbors!

Amateurs try to debunk real scientists

Darrell Beck and Frank Thurlow (Letters, Aug. 28) repeat the same anti-science propaganda they have spewed before, trying to debunk serious science. Yet they never explain how they became the "chosen ones" to receive the special insider knowledge that elevates them above real scientists published in peer-reviewed scientific and academic research journals.

Beck says climate science has nothing to do with science, yet there are over a thousand well-documented sources of original research confirming climate change in legitimate peer-reviewed publications and, so far, none that reject it. And Thurlow jumps on reports that, because of an aberrant La Nina condition, we had several months of below-normal weather temperatures, so naturally this amateur anti-scientist pronounces that this one-time dip in weather temperatures represents a long-term end to warming climate conditions. ... Yet the same sources that reported the temporary 2008 dip noted that it was a brief blip on the upward line graph, and bouncing back to the same point in the steady advance of global mean temperatures. We need to return to public policy based on science, not propaganda from Big Oil profiteers.

The little Latino that did!

Congratulations to Henry Cejudo for winning the gold medal in freestyle wrestling in the men's 55kg (121 pounds) category. He beat out Japan's Tomohiro Matsunaga, and his win makes him the youngest gold medal winner in U.S. wrestling history.

Henry Cejudo, who was born in Los Angeles, is being touted as a prodigy. I was so excited to see a California-born boy win gold for the United States. It is apropos that he would win gold for the country he knows as the land of golden opportunity. This young man is the epitome of the American dream! Once again we are reminded of the wonderful contributions made by immigrants. After all, our nation was made great by the contributions of immigrants. What a proud moment for all Americans. Only in America could something like this happen.

I have heard many times, "immigrants take more than they contribute." The accomplishments of this young man prove that immigrants do contribute to the betterment of our country. The opportunities afforded to this young man born to undocumented parents are the evidence that if you work hard, success is inevitable. He overcame all obstacles he believed in his dream, and he achieved it. Only in America!

Do you have what it takes to be a Republican?

As a liberal, I sometimes wonder if I have what it takes to be Republican. Am I man enough to make the tough choices necessary? Will I waver and go back to the errors of my progressive ways? All it really takes to be a Republican is amnesia.

Let me explain. Republicans have to be tough on national security, but must forget that Bush was president on 9/11 and has since done all he can to isolate the U.S. in the world. Fiscal responsibility? Just let $4 trillion to $5 trillion of debt slip your mind, and repeat "tax cuts are good" as a mantra. Individual freedom requires only that you don't mind someone listening to your calls without a warrant, or having strangers tell you what to do in your bedroom or with your reproductive system.

Family values? Let's just say the family isn't worth what it used to be, with the successful GOP/corporate-led assault on the middle class. Religion? It's enough to ignore pretty much everything Christ taught, but stay pious.

In short, to be a Republican supporter, you have to listen to what they say, and ignore what they do.

Obama's security clearance

If you or I were to try and get a top-secret security clearance, and a background check revealed we had been a druggie in our youth, and as an adult counted as one of our close friends and associates an avowed terrorist who had been involved with bombing the Pentagon, we would never get the security clearance.

Does this mean that if Obama is elected president, he will be excluded from any meetings of his Cabinet or anyone else in his administration where issues regarding American security are on the agenda? Just how does that work?

Prop. 8 will restore stability

In response to "Government shouldn't decide marriage," Letters, Aug. 27: I'm curious to note whether Mr. Fitzgerald would feel the same way if two women of their own free choice wanted to marry one man, or if a group of people freely wanted to marry each other. Whether two consenting adults want to enter into a relationship is their own business and is not touched upon by the government. With same-sex marriages comes many complexities that the general public are not made aware of, such as the legal complexities of other groups.

Thanks to the court's ruling using the "strict scrutiny" test on gay couples, any other type of marriage, such as polygamy, could very well win a case by claiming that they are being discriminated against and deserve the right to marry whom they wish. We are now vulnerable to this. ...

A "yes" vote for Prop. 8 will restore stability to these areas, and gays and lesbians will not lose on anything. As of late 2007, domestic partnerships already provide pretty much all the rights a married couple have.

A yes vote on Prop. 8 is a vote to regress back to UNequal protection under the law.
Steve D'Alo was exceedingly acurate when he said "As of late 2007, domestic partnerships already provide PRETTY MUCH all the rights a married couple have." (Emphasis mine.)
Would or should anyone be satisfied with "PRETTY MUCH" equal protection under the law?
Would or should anyone be satisfied with "PRETTY MUCH", but NOT all their civil rights?
Would or should anyone be satisfied with "PRETTY MUCH", but NOT all their right to be free of warrantless searches?
Would or should anyone be satisfied with "PRETTY MUCH", but NOT all their right to vote?
Would or should anyone be satisfied with "PRETTY MUCH", but NOT all their right to .......?
I can go on, but you catch my drift.
Equality is NOT a "PRETTY MUCH" thing, it must, by its very definition, be all-inclusive or it IS NOT EQUALITY AT ALL.

Little Miss Sunshine wrote on Sep 1, 2008 5:31 AM:Alaska Gov Sarah Palin is an "expert" on ENERGY?
Being in the pocket of Big Oil profiteers, always kowtowing to their singular solution of "more drilling," is not the definition of "expertise."
She knows NOTHING about the real issues of energy, other than how to sit in the deep, deep pockets of the oil behemoths that do the dirty work of her socialist Republican state and its state-owned commercial profiteering in conjunction with those who pull her strings.
If she wants to start getting an energy on education, while learning what the Vice Presidency does (other than shooting people in the face - for that she's "ready on day one"), she needs to sit down with T. John McCain, interviewed on 60 Minutes, said that he was a war criminal for dropping those bombs on villages and the children that lived there. John McCain also, once, got to witness close up, the effects of the bombs he was heroically dropping on those villages. The bombs on his carrier accidentally went off, a terribly accident that killed many of his shipmates. He saw the impact of napalm on human bodies. He admitted that he was shocked and horrified seeing this. It might have given him pause. But, like the men tried at Nurenberg, following orders was the only important thing, so he climbed back into that cockpit and dropped more napalm on those children in those villages. That's your war hero. And don't forget, the Vietnam war was another war for which lies were used to sell to the American people. John McCain was one of the loudest cheerleaders for the Iraq invasion. Besides, the Supreme Court's decision explicitly ruled out the possibilities he mentioned. He darkly warns "With same-sex marriages comes many complexities that the general public are not made aware of, such as the legal complexities of other groups." Yeah, the public is not aware of them because they don't exist. Prop 8 is in big trouble if this is the best argument they can make. The public needs stability restored, but Prop 8 has nothing to do with it. As for his claim that "gays and lesbians will not lose on anything", they will lose equality in the legal and social recognition of their committed relationships.

It would be very interesting to find out precisely what the reasons were on these "late-term abortions".
My guess is that most are because some test showed an extreme abnormality or severe deformity not able to be seen or tested for earlier in the pregnancy.
My wife, a pediatrician, is far more qualified than I to enumerate all the possible scenarios, not the least of which is the fetus completely missing part of the brain. Since brain waves do not occur until well after the end of the first trimester, ANY abortion for such a condition or any other condition known to cause short, if any, lifespan would be a "late-term abortion".
Heroic measures in such cases are nothing more than efforts in futility that break the hearts and banks of mothers, fathers and insurance companies.
I suggest that people like Alexandra Cloney "judge not, lest ye be judged" or someone else might be the one to "cast the first stone" on her/them.
This subject is not, nor can it be or have a "one size fits all" solution.

Three D wrote on Sep 1, 2008 7:41 AM:A person blogging as self-described "Pathetic" wrote yesterday at 1:25 and 5:18 p.m. to criticize Obama Mama's comments in which she had noted reports that the timing of Gov. Palin's marriage and birth of her first child suggested probable premarital dalliances.
While it is true that this would be a private matter and nobody else's business, the point from Obama Mama seems to be, not that Palin's romantic ardor is anyone else's business, but the hypocrisy.
Palin claims to be a committed conservative Christian. Every single conservative Christian denomination, from Catholic to Baptist to Mormon to Palin's own Assembly of God, roundly and vigorously condemns premarital sex as being a "sin."
This highlights yet additional little-known Bible factoids that the devout are often shocked to discover from their holy book. So again, don't take my word for it, pull that dusty icon of worship (than engraved image) off the book shelf, and instead of bowing before it, actually blow off the layer of dust, open it up, and read for yourself in 1st Corinthians 7:36.
Now it is no secret that I am no great fan of the renegade "apostle" Paul, who wrote so much that directly opposes Jesus (restricting women, while Jesus elevated them; supporting slavery while Jesus elevated the "servant" to the "greatest of all," condemning homosexuals while Jesus, silent on the subject, elevated others who were despised and outcast and, especially, in teaching the direct opposite as to how people are saved).
But it cannot be disputed that Paul was among the most, if not the most, conservative writers in the Bible. Yet, here in I Cor 7:36, Paul of all people confirms that if an unmarried couple have pre-marital sex (note the distinction between PRE-marital sex and EXTRA-marital sex, or adultery), there is no sin if they subsequently marry! It does not say that they are merely forgiven, it says they have not sinned!
In contrast, the adultery - the breaking of vows - was punishable by death in those times, according to the Law of Moses.
Paul here echoes the Law of Moses, which only required those having sex to get married. But one great cruelty in the Law of Moses, as specified in Deut 22:28-29, is that if a man rapes a woman, he must pay her father 50 shekels and must marry her! Not only that, but as further penalty to him, he cannot take advantage of the easy divorce laws and "put her away." In no way is the rape victim given a choice. They are stuck together for life! The marriage must happen! Perhaps she had refused his proposal! All he has to do is rape her and she's trapped for the rest of her poor, miserable life, with the person who violated her, no matter how righteous and virtuous she had tried to live. She is a double victim.
Oh well, God moves in mysterious ways.
Blessings,
3D

As I previously noted, Rev James Dobson maliciously and hatefully called on Christians to pray for meteoroligal mischief to hurt the Democrats. Does Ron criticize this? The silence is deafening (and defining). When their pleas for God's hateful involvement in politics backfires, and someone merely notes the irony, Ron goes ballistic.

As I said yesterday, Ron has the nerve to criticize my criticism of Dobson, with nary a negative word about the cruelty and hatred coming from Dobson that masquerades as Christianity.
As 3D so often reminds us, today's cruel "Christians" - today's religious estiablishment - would be the first ones to string that radical, long-haired hippie Jesus guy up on the cross.

And in reality it is the Republicans who are using this tragedy for political gain, taking advantage of an excuse to avoid the embarassing choice between asking an unpopular President to stay home from their convention or, even worse, having him there. Aha! Gustav gives them the perfect excuse. What needs to be shown, over and over, is reminders of what happened last time a hurricane roared through New Orleans: Bush at the Arizona ranch of JOHN McCAIN eating birthday cake - the ultimate "let them eat cake moment" of modern history - waiting days to go to New Orleans. Yes, they learned their lesson - we really do need government - but at what an enormous cost in American blood and treasure.

Based on this comment: Sentence 18 years and 9 months..?
Huh? Are you actually saying living as a woman is a punishment?
As in, 18 years + the 9 months?

When I first read this, I thought you were thinking, what I have sometimes thought about my own three sons, that I wish I hadn't. Ya know? Ever have one of those days? LOL
Like the old saying goes: You cannot put an old head on young shoulders.

But, you are right about my own inexperience when it comes to women.
Apart from the wisdom of my wife, and the example of my Mother, and Grand-Mothers, since I do not "own the equipment", I guess I'm at a loss of "understanding." At least, in that respect.
But, I think I do understand men very well, since.. I also own the equipment.
One thing I have tried, with great frustration at times, is to pass down to my own three the need to respect women, as people, as persons, as individuals. Knowing themselves sexually, their drives, their motives, in balance of their respect of women.
Self-control, to put it simply.
Maybe you missed my rant the otherday, when I went off on disgusting men who try to force onto women their own needs, not practising self control, mutual respect, knowing that a passing, pleasurable moment, is not worth the consequences? And I am particularly disgusted with men who have an attitude of "trying it, before you buy it."
Something I have desperately tried to teach my own.
That being said, I know this is not a commonly held belief anymore, but I wish it would come back into fashion.
Believe me, with my youngest I am living through the age of "hooking-up."
This, I believe, is the end point of a long downward slide towards making women more man-like. It is the fulfilment of the feminist ideal, living a sexually free and unburdened life, just like a man.
I think this misses the larger point, in that, some men walk away, men of no honor. And gives women a since of false freedom, since many end up holding the bag.
I have my own thoughts about the origin of this movement, it is controversial, in that, I think men have created birth control used by, for themselves.
If you look at the history of how birth control devices, and then drugs came to the market, behind them are men.
Sure, women want them. But, really...
which came first? The chicken, or the egg?
