Surf for the Sea set
OCEANSIDE ---- The 12th annual Surf for the Sea will take place Sept. 6 and 7 at the Oceanside Pier, north side. The event is in memory of the late Harry Bennett, Steve Leighton, Tore Bonura, Chuck "Clubber" Hundley, Banning Capps and John Craven, all local surfers who have passed away. The event will benefit the Surfrider Foundation, San Diego chapter, and other environmental organizations helping to protect the coast, ocean, waves and beaches.
Trophies will be awarded in 14 divisions. Entry fee is $40 amateur; $80 pro/am. All competitors receive an event T-shirt, lunch catered by Johnny Mananas and a chance at the opportunity raffle including surfboards, wetsuits and other prizes.

Ivey Ranch holds annual hoedown
OCEANSIDE ---- Ivey Ranch Park Association will hold its fourth annual Western Hoedown fundraiser from 3-7 p.m. Sept. 6 at 110 Rancho del Oro Drive. The event includes a Marine Corps Colorguard Flag Ceremony, Wester-style barbecue by Outback Steakhouse, a Kid's Corral, horseback riding demonstrations, music by disc jockey Brenda Marshall and Cowboy Jack Johnson, line dancing, silent auction and more. League of Women Voters to meet

Music guild to host monthly opera lectures

Kids' event to celebrate NASA's 50th anniversary
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad City Library will host celebrations saluting NASA's 50th anniversary from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane, during its monthly Super Science Saturday event for kids ages 5 and up and their parents. Join the library, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, the Mars Society of San Diego, the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Sally Ride Science and other organizations for exhibits and hands-on activities. The library's film series will screen space films, including: "October Sky" (1999, PG, 148 minutes) at 6 p.m. Sept. 10, and "The Astronaut Farmer" (2006, PG, 104 minutes) at 6 p.m. Sept. 17 in the library's Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium.

Moms In Motion starts new season
ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Moms In Motion will start a new season at 8 a.m. Sept. 7. The group is an international women's health and fitness community focused on fun, fitness and philanthropy. The Encinitas group is a run/walk group and will be training for a 5K in November. They meet in different locations around North County for 10 weeks of training, led by certified personal fitness trainer Robyn Cohen.

Pine needle basketry class offered
ENCINITAS ---- The San Dieguito Heritage Museum will offer an Introduction to Pine Needle basketry class for ages 11 and older from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the San Dieguito Heritage Museum, 450 Quail Gardens Drive. Carol Lang will teach students to use local natural materials, transforming yard waste into functional vessels.
Cost is $60; $55 for museum members. An additional $10 materials and preparation fee will be paid directly to the teacher at the beginning of the class. Bring sharp scissors.

Botanical garden to offer commemorative tiles
ENCINITAS ---- Chaired by TV personality Loren Nancarrow and his wife, Susie, Quail Botanical Gardens' Commemorative Tile program will give donors the opportunity to leave their mark at the site with the creative help of landscape architects. The garden is offering personalized tiles at $250, $500 and $1,000, embedded into several specially designed sitting walls spread around the new Hamilton Children's Garden. Gardeners meet to groom site
