ESCONDIDO ---- Expect downtown Escondido to be bustling and lively the next two weekends, with the family-friendly Grape Day Festival this Saturday and the Festival Escondido music and restaurant celebration the following Saturday, Sept. 13.
The Grape Day Festival, which typically attracts 6,000 to 10,000 people, will feature a morning parade down Grand Avenue and a wide range of games, contests and other activities in Grape Day Park from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Festival Escondido, which attracted more than 400 people when it was held for the first time last fall, will include two stages of live music, samples from 17 of the city's restaurants, wine tasting, art gallery openings and a beer garden. The event is slated to run from noon to 5:30 p.m.
Grape Day Festival
While the Grape Day Festival will still include an eclectic food court and dozens of vendor booths, organizers have added more contests and games this year.
"We're looking for new ways to engage the crowd," said Wendy Barker, director of the park's Escondido History Center. "These free events, like our horseshoe pitching contest, are something we really haven't done before."
Organizers also will highlight that the city's very first Grape Day Festival took place exactly 100 years ago, in 1908.
It's not a typical 100th anniversary because the festival was only held a few times between 1950 and its formal revival was in 1996. But Barker said there will be activities Saturday focused on this year being the centennial celebration of Grape Day, which began as a way to promote the area's grape-growing industry and to show off Escondido in its formative years.
Barker said the event, which is free to attend, will include many activities that focus on the city's history. They will include grape stomping, steam engine rides and demonstrations of weaving and blacksmithing. There will also be a bake sale, art shows, live entertainment and a "fun zone" for kids.
The festival will kick off with a parade traveling on Grand Avenue from Escondido Boulevard to Juniper Street, and then back to Escondido Boulevard and the park. The parade will feature dignitaries, horses, floats, marching bands and antique automobiles.
Barker said organizers expect strong attendance this year because the forecast is for relatively mild weather, which would be in stark contrast to some recent Grape Days that she described as oppressively warm.
Festival Escondido
The second installment of Festival Escondido will be significantly different than the first, according to Debra Rosen, chief executive of the Downtown Business Association.
The length of the event has been shortened from nine hours to less than six hours, a beer garden has been added and the public can attend the first three hours of live entertainment for free. A $30 ticket is required for the food samplings and to see the headline act, Americana singer Eve Selis.
Rosen said last year's festival, which ran from noon to 9 p.m., was too long. So this year will feature food and wine tasting from noon to 3 p.m., followed by the Selis concert from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tickets for just the Selis concert, which will take place at Grand Avenue and Orange Street, are $20.
Despite the changes, Rosen said the first installment of Festival Escondido was well-received by the owners of downtown art galleries, restaurants and other businesses. The goal was to expand the former Taste of Escondido restaurant sampling event by simultaneously highlighting the city's wide variety of art and culture.
"The idea was giving people multiple reasons to come downtown," said Rosen.
Melissa-Inez Walker, owner of Distinction gallery on Grand Avenue, said last year's festival was great for both sales and exposing future customers to her business. "It was a banner day," she said.
From each $30 ticket, $5 will go to the Men's Fellowship Center in Escondido, a recovery center for addicts.

DUI Checkpoint Anyone wrote on Sep 2, 2008 8:55 PM:Maybe the EPD could impound some higher end vehicles with a "DUI checkpoint" following the festival Escondido?
Probably just a waste of time though, I'm sure the beer garden customers are all riding the breeze and sprinter home.
DUI checkpoint wrote on Sep 3, 2008 12:23 AM:Yeah entrapment is a great way to promote your cities economy. It's working out great for Tijuana.
panda wrote on Sep 3, 2008 1:41 AM:Bring it on EPD. Have a checkpoint. I never see any driver's. That should not be on the road. Driving beat up cars. Many fancy trucks in Escondido. Have one at the festival. I am sure all the poor people who lost there car last week. Will be driving a new one this week.

Sometimes these humble downhome community events make the biggest impact. Revenue is good; community spirit is better. Slow and steady wins te race.
Karl wrote on Sep 3, 2008 5:35 AM:Hey DUI Checkpoint Anyone, if someone is stupid enough to drink and not bring a DD or ride the Breeze/sprinter they deserve the extreme sentence that they will recieve.
Jaque wrote on Sep 3, 2008 6:54 AM:Always someone who wants it to rain on the parade (DUI Checkpoint Anyone). That being said, it would be nice to have a small hotel in the "downtown" area.
Deanna wrote on Sep 3, 2008 8:11 AM:Ms. Rosen, business folks and others put in a lot of work so the Citizens of Escondido can participate as a community, have fun, and support businesses. The sole purpose is not to sit around and drink alcohol.
I suspect most on this board never even leave their house to attend any of the cities functions, instead they stay home, get on there computers and complain. Wow...how exciting is that!
If you can't find something 'good' in this event, then attend the next city council meeting and suggest 'your way' to bring the community together.
I would like to attend wrote on Sep 3, 2008 9:40 AM:with my family, but there are too many uninsured and unlicensed drivers. We can't afford a major hospital bill due to one of our children being hit and the driver not carrying drivers insurance.
Escondeeter wrote on Sep 3, 2008 10:57 AM:Eve Selis!! Excellent!
Caught her at the Art Center a couple of years back, she puts on a great show.
Bill wrote on Sep 3, 2008 4:22 PM:Who will be paying for police protection for this parade, just in case some grapes get unruly?
Abdul wrote on Sep 3, 2008 10:23 PM:Except for Deanna the rest of you people are just a bunch of whiners maybe Phil Gramm is rite...other than complain do something about it and GOOD I'm glad to see that the complainers are not coming to the event maybe now the rest of us can have a good time. Dont DRINK AND DRIVE I dont care if your from mars or England dont do it theirs other things to do at the event
Responsible Parent wrote on Sep 3, 2008 10:30 PM:How about bring a DD and be a responsible adult and dont drink so much and you wont need a hotel or an arrest.Parents watch your kids or bring a babysitter and why doesn't everybody just relax a little for once a drunk driver drives with a license, insurance or without it.
Bubble Boy wrote on Sep 3, 2008 11:30 PM:I dont have to worry about anything because my bubble protects me. I can sleep in my bubble if I drink too much and I don't need insurance or a driver license. Yeah my bubble fits three more people so anybody's welcome to crash out on Saturday.
