They call them "illegal immigrants" for a reason
By: Steve | ∞
What is it about "illegal" that the so called journalists (aka editorial staff) of the North County Times cannot grasp?
If any of this staff would accurately report the truth, they would mention that groups like the Minutemen and Border Watch are all, without exception, not "anti-immigration" as the NCT falsely portrays them.
These groups and tens of thousands of other concerned citizens and legal immigrants are indeed anti ILLEGAL immigration. There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting the laws of our country strictly enforced. We are a nation of immigrants. Our great nation was built to what it has become by hard working immigrants and their descendants who obeyed the law, came here LEGALLY, and worked towards the American dream. It is irresponsible of the NCT editorial staff to falsely portray any group who wants our laws enforced, our borders secured against the trafficing of drugs, terrorists and modern day slaves.
For some reason I doubt there is anyone on the editorial staff to retract their false and misleading charactarization and begin reporting the truth. If wanting our laws enforced and sending representitives to Washington DC who will work towards that end is extremist, then we need lots more extremists to get elected and less so called journalists who wish to lie their way to assisting in the deteroriation of our great nation.

Dazed & Confused wrote on Mar 6, 2006 2:41 PM:Cmon....more debates..more debates. Why should someone be risking their life to cross borders?!If its a law, dont cross. And dont endanger your family by crossing. It sort of shows the education and respect people have in Mexico.
Erika wrote on Mar 10, 2006 4:08 AM:Dazed and Confused...you really are. That doesn't show what kind of respect people have in Mexico, it shows how desperate they are. How many people do YOU know that have risked their life to be here? A man-made law is not the word of God, so it is always quesionable.
Even More confused wrote on Mar 13, 2006 8:22 AM:Why risk your life if you know you are breaking the law? Why not get the papers and legally through the front door?
Erika wrote on Mar 15, 2006 9:14 PM:Yeah...do you even know the process to getting in through the "front door"? A person acquires legal residency through the United States Citizen and Immigration Services. It can be done if an already legal resident family member fills out a Form I-130, A petition for an immigrant relative, or Form I-129, Petition for immigrant worker, otherwise, it is nearly impossible. So, if these people don't have a relative that is a legal resident, or an employer that wants to hire them, there is no way to come through the front door. There is a legal way, but it is inneffective and unfair. To many Americans, illegal immigrants are just that: illegal. They have broken laws by being here, so they shouldn’t be here. “The reason America is great is [because] we have laws to insure our freedoms” (John), but we also have laws that violate freedoms. Immigration laws do not violate American freedom, but humans are not only American- they are Mexican, Guatemalan, Salvadorian, Honduran, Chinese- they are of every nationality. A person’s rights are not granted based on their country of citizenship or legal residence, a person has rights based on their humanity and morality. One cannot say that Illegal Immigrants are immoral because they have broken an immigration law. As Martin Luther King Junior wrote in his letter from Birmingham Jail, there exist two types of laws: “just and unjust [and] ‘an unjust law is no law at all.’” Immigration laws fall under this category. King also states that “All segregation statutes are unjust…[they] give the segregator a false sense of superiority and the segregated a false sense of inferiority…Hence segregation is not politically, economically and sociologically unsound, it is morally wrong and awful.” Some Americans might say that laws upholding segregation and laws preventing entry into the United States are too different to even be compared. But isn’t segregation separation? Don’t Immigration Laws separate immigrants from us? Even worse, don’t they separate these human beings from their dreams? Therefore, Immigration Laws are immoral. “One has not only a legal but moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws” (King). Americans, in turn, are being immoral by upholding immoral laws. It is time for Americans to start seeing illegal immigrants for what they really are: humans. The right to pursuit happiness is unalienable because it is human nature, it is unavoidable, it is uplifting to “human personality” (King). A Green Card shouldn’t be necessary for American Laws and Americans to respect this right, because a Green Card doesn’t grant this right, everyone is born with it. It is because of this that immigrants come to this country, to pursuit their happiness. "THE GREAT WORLD POWER HAS NOT YET FOUND THE WEAPON TO DESTROY PEOPLE'S DREAMS," and it shouldn't.

Erika wrote on Mar 17, 2006 8:44 AM:Just a "little dazed and confused"? NO, you are VERY dazed and confused. So, you paid for your residency? WOW! Now, you are the most righteous and deserving person...NOT. Get over it? Get over what. YOU need to get over YOURSELF...paying for your residency, it doesn't make you anymore human than anybody else because you were lucky enough to be able to, just the way being born here doesn't make me more human than you or anybody else that wasn't born here.
Erika wrote on Mar 17, 2006 8:48 AM:So, you're "feeling alienated"? Poverty doesn't "follow" you, you either get out of it, or let yourself stay in it, and once you "get out of the poverty scene," it doesn't follow you, you either let yourself fall back in it or you don't. If you can't keep yourself out of it, don't blame it on the people that are trying to get out of it.

Doug wrote on Mar 18, 2006 6:10 PM:I see Erika's still going strong with the same lousy arguments. Example: "As Martin Luther King Junior wrote in his letter from Birmingham Jail, there exist two types of laws: “just and unjust [and] ‘an unjust law is no law at all.’” Immigration laws fall under this category." According to the Chicano Studies immigration playbook they do. But of course it's laughable to equate the US-born descendants of slaves to today's economic gatecrashers from Mexico. Laws against slavery and segregation were 'injust' and were overturned. Laws against illegal immigration are not only just, but democratic and are necessary to protect US sovereignty, social unity, and cultural identity. Erika and the Chicano Studies crowd have shamelessly adopted the language of the African American civil rights struggle as their own. But I can't in my wildest dreams ever imagine an African slave saying, as one illegal economic migrant from Mexico was quoted as saying, that "the only thing worse than being exploited in America is not being exploited in America." Erika needs to fold her tent and move on. Maybe to Mexico!
Oldtimer wrote on Mar 21, 2006 8:07 AM:Right on Doug. Geronimo - your comments are at best amusing, however in order to accuse one party of trespassing, one has to own the property in question. This whole discussion is really moot - the laws are there and they need to be enforced. There is no "choice C". People like "Ace" are probably college students who live at home with Mommy and Daddy and pay no taxes; therefore they couldn't care less how much illegal immigration cost the rest of us! For the record, my wife and I (who now work in the computer field) have done all those jobs you have been saying "no white person would do” I’ve cleaned toilets, worked in the fields, mowed yards, worked in fast food - my wife worked her way through college changing old people's diapers in a nursing home! PLEASE! Talk about stereotypes! Many of us "white people" have done all these jobs and more, the difference being we bettered ourselves by working two or more jobs and going to college, without the help of the government in the form of welfare, food stamps, medical care, etc. We are not "racist" for wanting our current laws enforced. Don't like the laws? Change them, but don't call the law abiding citizens names.
Puzzled wrote on Mar 21, 2006 8:18 AM:Erika, you say, "... Immigration Laws are immoral." Who are YOU to decide which laws are immoral? If we go on your thinking, everyone gets to choose which laws they will or will not obey. That means if someone thinks you owning a better car than he/she does is immoral, they have the right to take it from you. The laws against theft are "immoral" to them, therefore they should be able to steal and have no fear of punishment! If you don't like a law write your government officials and/or vote for different people in office. Maybe next time you get pulled over for speeding tell the officer you think the speed laws are "immoral" and see how long he laughs!
Doug wrote on Mar 21, 2006 10:21 AM:hey Oldtimer - like you, I've done janitorial work, bussed tables, dug ditches as a "gopher" in construction--all the things that are supposedly "beneath us" as "gueros" (an epithet used by Mexican dishwashers to insult us native-born busboys). We didn't need 'no stinking' nanny when my wife and I raised our two boys. (Wy wife, who is of Mexican descent, chose to use cloth diapers for our first boy, which we laundered ourselves). To this day we do the same household chores we did 26 years ago when we got married. I can't say I enjoy it, but we've never had to rely on outside help to take care of most jobs that I believe a majority of middle-class Americans still do for themselves. I must admit, it's not easy, since my wife and I have always worked full-time outside the home, but being the cleaning Nazi that she is, she wouldn't have it any other way.

People are coming here ILLEGALLY - which means against the law, and taking OUR money, mine and yours. Ask anyone who works in the medical field. Hospitals are losing millions every year, and are often forced to close. Why do you suppose that is? I'll tell you - it's all the people who go there who can't pay and a large majority of them are here illegally. Yet these same people send money back to Mexico and display Mexico flags on their cars! Ever had an illegal alien hit your car? They have no license, no insurance and when you call the police there is virtually nothing they can do. The police might write them a ticket, but so what? It's about as worthless as the paper it's written on. So who pays for this? We do - the people who have insurance. Our rates go up. Not to mention most of you are forgetting that while there may be many people who are just poor and looking for a better life, they are also MANY drug dealers and criminals coming into our country also. Read this paper - I've seen many articles of "Mexican Nationals" involved in criminal acts. The guy who shot and killed a Oceanside police office was one. But you want these people coming here, and paying for all their offspring? People, we need to care of the people who are here before we invite the rest of the world. The money to pay for all these social programs does NOT come from out of the sky, it comes from people who are here legally and paying taxes. PERIOD! Where does it end?

So many things are happening over there, u dont even know. It saddens me to know what is happening to those poor people. The government has all the money and is keeping the poor, poor. Why does US have so many immigrants from Mexico, because the people are tired of being oppressed. They dont have enough money to feed and cloth there families, the kidnappings, the drug cartels, who the heck wants to live there. The U.S. should just take over Mexico and set things right, they did it for Iraqi people and there not even our neighbors. Mexico needs an overhaul, and maybe the people will want to live there and maybe even go back willingly. I believe the key problems are in Mexico, u solve those problems and things will get better. Otherwise rebuilding a fence is just hiding from the real problems, people will still find a way to come here for a better life because thats all they want, and its wrong for us to turn them away. The Americans fought for their rights, just as all humans have the right to pursue happiness regardless of where they live. If you say the protests need to stop because it's not going to work, then likewise, i say any bills that might be passed must be stopped, because they're simply not going to work. People from south of the border will continue to cross over as they have been doing in order that they might have a chance to live a better life. Would you call a poor, starving man a sinner because he stole some food so that he wouldn't die? of course not, it's not a sin and it would be wrong to call him a sinner. the same holds true, illegal immigrants are not looking for trouble and don't find joy in risking their lives to cross the border. they do it so that they can have a better chance at life, and trying to have a better lifestyle is not a crime. therefore, calling them criminals is wrong.

Since my parents came here legally, we didn't have to give a relatives address to attend school. I started in second grade, I didn't have any problems learning math, it was easy. In fact, I was further along in math than the rest of my classmates. Reading that was another story. I was ridiculed because of my heavy accent. The spanish speaking kids would laugh at mewhen I pronounced the word water. All you Mexicans out there will know why! I was furious because they wouldn't help me all they would do was to make fund of me. I vowed since then to learn English very well and complete assimilate into my new culture. I didn't want to associate with Mexicans that would ridicule me instead of helping me to learn and integrate. The real problem with illegal immigrants is that most of them don't have a vested interest in assimilating into this society. They are here only for financial gain. Yes they work for lower wages; however, they will also live in rat holes to send money to their families in Mexico. They should stay in Mexico and fight for their country, if the U.S. is so unfair to them. Come to this country legall, the U.S. is the most generous country in the world in every aspect of citizen's rights and benefits. I've lived in Great Britain and they don't give citizenship to anyone unless British heritage can be proven. Stop blaming the U.S. people from trying to protect their borders. Mexico is a land of corruption that is supported by every illegal alien that crosses here illegally. Stay in your crounty and protest Vicente Fox and all his corrupt policies. Let's legalize small quantities of drugs is his solution to the drug problem. Corruption begats corruption, go home and come back legally. Have some self respect and stop doing the jobs won't do for pennies. The U.S. is all about improving one's standard of living and quality of life. How can that happen, if we allow illegal immigrants to come and depress the wages of every single American citizen. Stop the rhetoric. Illegal immigration is terrible in every sense of the word.

I have received several scholarships and recognitions. I am a first generation college student. I am the daughter of two former illegal immigrants. My parents went from being illegals, having nothing in this country, to owning a home and having their children in this country's top universities. Their children are now members of this nation's elite, the top 14% of American society, just by attending college. My parents are doing more for this country than many other 'naturalized' Americans by sending their children to college and their son to fight for this country in Iraq. They speak English now and own the cars they like and do what they want, and help others when they can. Not ONCE in our life have we taken ANY type of welfare or medicare. My father sold his car once in order to be able to pay for a hospital bill. There is no way he was going to satisfy stereotypes. It's too bad that YOU let stupid taunting from children in school TRAUMATIZE you and lead you to create a stereotype against illegal immigrants, a stereotype that my family, and MANY other families of illegal immigrants and former illegal immigrants, don't fit into. Sooo...my parents should have stayed to fight against the government in Mexico? Back in 1962 or whenever your family first arrived to this country, YOUR family didn't do that, but now all other Mexican migrant families should? My education will allow me to do great things for this country. My brother is doing something great for this country by fighting for it. This wouldn't have been possible if my parents hadn't come here, and they came here illegally. Is illegal immigration bad in every way? Obviously NOT. There are illegals who have fought for this country, and their certificate of citizenship is given to their families at their funerals. I'd like to hear you give your little speech outloud at one of their funerals. Illegal immigrants "depress the wages of EVERY SINGLE American"? What a lie, duh, because they don't even have all the types of jobs that "EVERY SINGLE American" has. Yes, I will admit, they depress the wages of SOME Americans, and SOME illegal immigrants don't wish to assimilate into the American culture, BUT generalizing is "terrible in every sense." Just like I'm sure you won't take a family like mine and make a positive generalization, you shouldn't make negative generalizations either. My Aunt is trying to become an American resident legally. She has been waiting fifteen years for a Visa. Research done by Princeton shows that out of all the people that apply for Visas, 60% are Mexican, and 15% are Asian, the rest are other ethnicities, but of all the Visas granted, 40% are for Asians, and less than 35% are for Mexicans.
