Stick lost in Iraq
Teddy Roosevelt once said, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Bush-McCain can only run around screaming, because they lost their stick in Iraq.

Do you really want this kind of change?
Sen. Biden, in his opening statements, railed against the Republicans and said, "No more of Bush and McCain thinking." What a Democratic ticket. Obama doesn't know how many states there are, but he can count the houses that Sen. McCain has, and Biden thinks that McCain is vice president. In case Sen. Biden reads this, it's Cheney, sir.
In the past, Mr. Biden has extolled the many virtues of Sen. McCain and how he has worked with him across the aisle on certain bills many times and has the utmost respect for Sen. McCain. Do you really want this kind of change?

Pro-choice advocate delusional
Margaret McCown Liles' letter, "McCain's 'idiocy' about conception," reminds me of a cartoon I saw as a kid. A floozy bird named Daisy asks Horton the elephant to sit on her egg while she went off partying –– unfazed that the huge elephant might crush the egg. As long as she found someone to sit on it, she felt morally vindicated.
Meanwhile, Horton dutifully sat on that egg through rain and snow and heat until the egg started hatching. Then Daisy, in a temporary fit of misguided possessiveness, orders Horton to get lost, claiming her undeniable rights as the mother. I now realize that Daisy was the prototype of the self-serving, self-absorbed, baby-killing machine called the pro-choice movement, which has vindicated itself from responsibility in the killing of 50 million potential human beings. Motherhood begins at conception. It's not easy to nurture an invisible "potential" human. But that's the job nature has "burdened" women with.
When Ms. Liles reads in the paper that a pregnant woman was killed in a car accident, does she think two people died? Or does she stop to ask, "How far along was she?" If the latter, she should change her name to Daisy.

Palin is a reckless choice for vice president
Two years ago, Sarah Palin was mayor of a town smaller than Valley Center. For 20 months, she's been Alaska's governor, a population comparable to North County. Now the candidate who would be the oldest elected president in U.S. history thinks she could step in as the most powerful leader in the world?
She understands foreign affairs because Alaska's near Russia? She's qualified for commander in chief via the Alaska National Guard? Her economic expertise is managing a no-pains state budget made flush by the oil industry. She doesn't think oil is exacerbating climate problems. (Screw the polar bears.) Fossil fuel's formation doesn't even fit in her creationism's timeframe.
McCain says the only thing the VP does is attend funerals of dictators and daily check the president's health status. A month ago, Palin said, "What is it exactly that the VP does every day?" Maybe they both should check into that detail. So when the phone rings at 3 a.m., it could be picked up by a curmudgeon itching to bomb Iran, or a hockey mom who, in the only saving grace, may already be awake nursing her baby. Funny? Not so much.
Maverick? No. Reckless! Will Americans fall for this?

Obama will rob Peter to pay Paul
With Sen. Obama, on a campaign which promises new programs ($1,000 to families, universal health care, etc.), do you wonder where the money is coming from? Ultimately, from you and me –– the people who work and will pay increased taxes. Even if the money comes from Big Oil, it still originates from the consumer, you and me.
The Saturday (Aug. 30) political cartoon that has a voter holding a sign reading "Details?" at an Obama speech is very appropriate. There is an adage: "Any government that robs Peter to pay Paul will always be supported by Paul." Are you a Peter or a Paul?

Karma coming for McCain, too
For the first time, I believe Junious Montgomery is on to something with his "Karma is coming" letter, Aug. 31, and I hope he's right.
He says karma killed John Edwards' chance at a vice presidential spot. Using the same logic, it would appear that John McCain's shot at the presidency is over, since he cheated on his wife and later left her to marry the much younger and wealthy heiress.

War Powers Consultation Act is deficient
During the past year, former Secretaries of State James Baker III and Warren Christopher (both members of the Council on Foreign Relations) have been seeking to replace the ill-regarded 1973 War Powers Act. The two claim that the act is deficient and that the Constitution "ambiguously divides war powers" between the president and Congress. No, it doesn't! The role of Congress is to send the nation to war; the role of the president is to guide the military.
Baker and Christopher now propose that Congress enact a new War Powers Consultation Act of 2009 that will establish rules for "consultation" between the president and Congress before sending the nation into another war. Their proposal that they want enacted ignores the clear delegation of war-making power to Congress alone. These two men want an imperial president, not a limited chief executive.
Call your congressman to reject their War Powers Consultation Act.

Hit them in their pocketbooks
It seems to me the most effective way to force the state legislators to agree on a budget would be to hit them in their pocketbooks. Why should they get any pay for failing to do their jobs? Where do I sign an initiative to put that provision in the law?

A crapshooter is not what we need in White House
John McCain is a risk-taker, and there is a risk that a risk-taker could, on impulse, make too quick a decision to go to war. It appears that McCain has had minimal personal contact with Gov. Sarah Palin, whom he met six months ago. He hardly knows her, and yet he is willing to put the security of the nation in her hands if he dies or is incapacitated. Does he ignore his age and feel immortal?
Choosing Palin as his running mate is not only inherently risky, but also deprives the American public of the opportunity to have sufficient time to get to know her, since the election date is so close. What does she know about foreign relations and constitutional law? ...
We are learning that Alaskan legislators voted 12-0 to open an investigation into whether Palin abused her power in firing the Alaska Public Safety Commissioner, allegedly because he refused to fire her ex-brother-in-law after a bitter custody battle. This may turn out to be a tempest in a teapot, but obviously, someone under such an ethics cloud should not be presented to voters as the person to carry the awesome responsibilities of a president at a time our nation faces major economic troubles and a dangerous world.

Let him who is without sin cast first stone
Mr. Jon Bell's snide concern that use of drugs during youth would prevent Barack Obama from attending security clearance level meetings is not genuine and intended only to provoke ("Obama's security clearance," Letters, Sept. 1). Consider: We have an alcoholic president who attends security meetings, despite persistent rumors of his partying days' cocaine usage. We have Bill Clinton, who didn't inhale (or was it, "didn't exhale"?) as another example of a president who attended high security-level meetings.
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone. The people who experiment during their college days, who clean up their acts, are different from someone who later in life is still dealing with drug issues.

Neither candidate is up to Lincoln's standards
I note with much interest that both Republican and Democratic parties have done little in the last session of Congress to right the wrongs done by our president and his group of ne'er-do-wells. If Lincoln had been in the White House, would he have forgotten the common man? Would Abe have reconstructed the South after it was destroyed by a hurricane? Would he have tried to take care of those vets who had been ravaged by war? Could Dubya have written (even with help) the Gettysburg Address? Would Obama and McCain have even considered abolishing slavery? Pretty heavy, even by today's standards.
No political front-runner has the deep-seated knowledge that Lincoln possessed. That is not to say either party's candidate would not do a better job than the presidency over the past eight years. Vote, people! It is needed to help restore our beliefs and faith in our government.

There's crow, and then there's crow ...
Finally, I have to respond! First to Richard Sauerheber (Letters, Aug. 10). He states, "Our military supported invading Iraq, in part because they were told stories." [Has] Richard served in the military? [If so] he would know that true patriots don't have the luxury to pick and choose the conflicts they are ordered to war in. It's called duty, honor and country.
I wonder if Tony San Miguel (Aug. 11) realizes that the president doesn't have the authority to spend money, but his do-nothing, Democrat-led Congress does. And yes, Tony, I will vote a straight Republican ticket always.
Peggy Sloan (Aug. 16): Is going to be angrier on Nov. 5 when John McCain is elected president of the U.S. However, might I suggest she travel to the country of San Francisco where angry women like Nancy, Barbara, Dianne and Cindy reside. ...
Seems Gary Miller (Aug. 24) is trying to horn in on my crow service. Sorry, I'll be serving Gary's ilk the crow, along with some fine liberal arrogance sauce of pond scum mixed with grey poupon. Enjoy! Semper fi.

McCain's judgment in question
No one should challenge John McCain's bravery or courage, and no one should ignore his long history of poor judgment or his many lapses of integrity. ... From his Senate rebuke for "poor judgment" to his crude mean-spirited joke regarding Chelsea Clinton, McCain has demonstrated inadequate character to be president.
The latest example of his poor judgment is evidenced by his selection of Sarah Palin as VP. After making experience the central theme of his campaign, he selects a person with no foreign policy experience and little experience in government. Think of the hypocrisy! ... If he believes experience is important, how can he justify Palin's selection?
Palin's experience includes two terms as mayor of a town of 7,000 and her election, 20 months ago, as governor of Alaska (population about half the city of San Diego). McCain made a snap decision after only one recent meeting and without proper vetting. The decision supports his recent strategy of pandering to neoconservatives and the religious right; a dramatic change in his position four years ago. We need a VP qualified to be president. We don't need another four years of neoconservative rule.

Sarah Palin's destructive family values
Palin, a hard religious puppet, opposes abortion, setting an irrevocable course. She doesn't believe in contraception or education, which sets the scene for many more pregnancies than people want or need. This circular logic enables the least informed or the least intended to become the caretakers (moms) of our future. How about a 40-plus-year-old couple with a healthy sex life? No way to reduce pregnancy, and no way to stop it. ... What about a pregnant teenager's development and growth, like granny-to-be Palin's own teenage daughter?
Some righties are praising Palin's continuing her pregnancy knowing of her child having Downs Syndrome. I call it callous and/or cruel to force a child to a lifetime of estrangement to life. Call me callous and cruel, but I can't elevate a Down patient to the better part of living. No Renaissance kid, there. She thinks a Washington, D.C., and traveling life is what a socially disabled infant will prosper in? Sure, the child will get the best of socialist government health care, but it is human interaction, slow and sure, that reaches across that "bridge to nowhere." Palin wants to take away everyone's right of running their own future.

Media are grasping at straws
You are a sleazy newspaper. Printing the information regarding Sarah Palin's daughter and putting her picture in the paper. It happens in the best of families, but I don't think it should be headline news. Let her handle her problems in privacy. And her husband got tickets two decades ago.
You people are really grasping at straws for something bad. I am seriously thinking of canceling your newspaper.

The presidential circus
I have just received a letter from a friend of mine in Australia, asking how I was coping with the circus known as "the presidential election campaign"? This was my reply: Couldn't be a more appropriate description. We have the clowns, the acrobats, the hoopla and the sadness of a country that cannot see what a spectacle it is creating for the rest of the world. And we also have a young, previously unknown girl, who now the whole world knows has been playing house with her boyfriend. Bloody media!

I thought they both did very well at conducting a real serious discussion on serious topics. So Alf, did you let your prior prejudice influence your powers of observation? Did you even watch the interview or just assume your conclusion was correct without watching at all? I watched Bill ask many questions and not interrupt at all letting Obama state his positions AND clarify some of his prior statements, such as he would not invade Pakistan with a ground army to capture Bin Laden. Other times Bill let Obama answer at length, but then only interrupted to move on to the next question. There was only a time or two when Bill and Obama both interrupted each other to explain what was meant by a question or answer. Would you want Bill to kneel down on a carpet before the seated Obama and let him give speeches on whatever he wanted? The idea of the interview was to ask some hard questions and allow Obama to state his positions, and clarify some of his previous statements that may have been misunderstood.

Bills Friend wrote on Sep 5, 2008 5:08 AM:Bill O’Reilly has become considerably more tactful at interviewing in the last year or two. Part of that is attributable to his weekly body language segment with Tonya Reiman, author of the recent book, "The Power of Body Language". Usually she comments on the body language of well-known persons after seeing the TV clips shown by Bill.
These are usually involving persons in current news events and interviews. Sometimes they involve Bill being interviewed on other programs, or Bill interviewing other persons on his program. So after seeing himself in the clips he has toned down some of his mannerisms. One time he asked Tonya after showing a clip, "Was I rude?" And she shyly nods and says, "Yes". Also Bill reads some emails at the end of each program (except when he is out of town). He says he gets about 4,000 per day. Often one says "you were too easy on John Doe last night", and the next one will say, "you were too hard on John Doe last night."

Horton deposits the fertilizer in Daisy,

Horton has hijacked Daisy's body and has the gall to tell her what she can and can not do.
Along comes a hunter and shoots Horton dead and Daisy can now choose if she wants the egg to hatch or not.
Daisy lives happily ever after and the next Horton thinks twice, thrice
and then some more,
before figuring out that he has no right to tell Daisy what to do any more.
Being an elephant, the next Horton never forgets what happened to the first Horton.
And he learns and accepts.

Human individuals, they said, do not turn in their humanity and moral sense when they put on the uniform. When asked to do things that are objectionable or, in their opinion, immoral, they DO have the ability to say no, and accept the consequences. Many military people have done so, though they don't get much of the spotlight despite their admirable courage of putting morality over blind patriotism. Is it gruesome? Well, have you ever watched an open heart surgery? Have you watched a simple cataract surgery, as the doctor pokes a scalpel into someone's eye? I have. The buzz about Palin is a bit disconcerting. She has generated more buzz in six days than Obama did in his 18 month media blitz.
I am caught between voting for a couple of soft socialists, one of whom belongs to the Religious Left of Black Liberation Theology, or a couple of Born-Again’s from the religious right.
Having been educated in Catholic and Baptist military schools, I have found that I can avoid religious nuts more easily than I can people with guns who want my money through higher taxes.
In Catholic schools, I was marched to Mass DAILY for three years, and in Baptist schools I was forced to take an hour of Bible-study daily for a year plus Church weekly. At Annapolis, I was marched to Chapel every Sunday.
I had just one run-in with the IRS, and that was more difficult than all of the religious problems I ever had.
Given the problems with dealing with government or religious nuts, I’ll accept religious nuts every day. Yes, I hear that Palin fired the town Librarian because that Librarian would not ban certain books – but I don’t think that is ever going to get much traction nationally.
But raising taxes and redistributing the wealth of the Black Liberation Theology is something that gets enough traction for me to fear. The difference between “You are your Brother’s keeper” as a religious admonition, and “You ARE your Brother’s keeper” as a government command, is the difference between religion and government.
Yes, there are third-party alternatives, but they simply are side-shows.
As usual I am forced into a defensive position where I vote against the worst of the two candidates. I am, once again, selecting the lesser of two evils. How the political system provides us with such candidates is beyond stupid.
But it is what it is.
But the real kicker is two lawyers (and a potential lawyer First Lady) running against two non-lawyers!
That makes my selection easier, if not easy.

Anyhow, my advice for BillO and his ilk is to listen to Bob Edwards, formerly of NPR, currently on XMPR. In an hour interview, I'd guess that Edwards' voice is heard less than 5% of the time. It's all about prompting the guest to speak at length. Amazingly informative. BillO could learn something from Edwards, the master, but I suspect his ratings and income would take a big hit. It's the only money vs ethics dilemma.

And I want everyone to please pay attention to the strawman setup by this blogger in mentioning Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., amid other's, in his response, as if by osmosis Barack can make some type of claim to these men.
It does not work that way.
Community organizing is when people are brought together in common self-interest and attempt to compel others to join them.
In Chicago, community organizers are foot soldiers for the local political machine.
Obama followed in {Frank} Davis' footsteps, becoming a community organizer in Chicago.
Gerald Kellman, who first recruited Obama, taught him the basics, and he also learned from organizing trainers associated with the Gamaliel Foundation.
Gerald Kellman, whose identity Obama also tries to hide in his book,
is a disciple of Saul "The Red" Alinsky.
The Woods Fund provided Kellman with his original $25,000 to hire Obama.
Obama served on the Woods board with terrorist Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground. And Ayers was one of Obama's early political supporters.
So you see how all this is beginnging to tie together? Not like you tried to do, by giving us all of the other names, MLK, John Lewis, Ralph Nader, or Paul Wellstone. Obama NEVER worked with any of these men, he worked with Ayers, he was hired by Kellman. He was mentored into his community organizer role by Frank Marshall Davis.
But do you see how you must skirt the truth about how Obama came to be an organizer, in order to prop him up?
And speaking of Wade Rathke of ACORN.
Their particular brand of community organizing, relies the homeless and ex-cons to register dead people,
shaking down corporations, and using the race card. Sounds like Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton style, to me.
OBAMACAN wrote on Sep 5, 2008 10:15 AM:Has anyone been watching the Daily Show's excellent "coverage" of the Republican National Convention?
My favorites are when, instead of making up their own jokes or skits, they juxtapose actual back-to-back doubletalk from politicians.
The best was broadcast late Wednesday at 11:00 p.m., and rebroadcast yesterday at 10:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. It was hilarious, showing the rank hypocrisy of the Republicans regarding Sarah Palin.
First, it showed a clip of Karl Rove lambasting the media for criticizing Palin's paper-thin history of "experience," as he puffed up how important it was to have a mayor of (what he called) the "second largest city in Alaska (Wasilla, with 7,000 people is nowhere near the size of Anchorage, Fairbanks or Juneau, and the whole state has about the population of North County). Then, it showed a clip of Rove discussing the possibility that Obama might pick Virginia governor Tim Kaine. Rove says that with Kaine's ridiculously limited experience, only THREE years governor of a (major) state, plus being Lieutenant Governor, and having been mayor of a city of only 200,000 people (Richmond), it would be an insult to Americans and show he was selected for purely political reasons and not to get the best qualified person. Double talk!
Then it showed Bill O'Reilley lambasting the criticism of Palin's hypocrisy for promoting abstinence only as her unwed teen daughter gets knocked up - that these things happen in any family and it is no reflection of the mother. Followed by, of course, a recent clip of O'Reilley lambasting unwed teen Jamie Lynn Spears and saying the blame lies squarely on the shoulders of the MOTHER.
Then there is Fox "analyst" Dick Morris and McCampaign Senior Policy Advisor Nancy Pfotenhauer, both in Fox news clips, lambasting the media for picking on a woman (Palin), followed by, of course, clips of each of them viciously criticizing Hillary Clinton for raising the same complaints.
But the best was of Sarah Palin herself, in a March 2008 clip, unleashing her pit bull anger (with a lipsticky smile, of course) against Hillary for being a "whiner" about not being able to take the kind of scrutiny that a presidential campaign has to expect.
I don't know if it is on YouTube yet. My McCain-like Internet skills being somewhat limited, I wasn't able to find it (though I did copy from my DVR disk to my computer and download to my iPhone).
If someone can find it and suggest better search terms than I was using, please help.
Ron and Raoul would be inspired by the amazing, incredible ability to spin demonstrate by these Republican masters of doubletalk.
