McCain's real strategy
This will be the slickest and most rousing convention ever. How? There will be a switch in the vice presidential choice for McCain. Think about it. Those nasty, terrible, liberals are attacking the poor, hard-working, moral and fine Palin family and John McCain will not be a part of it. He will excuse this fine woman from these terrible and awful attacks by the evil liberals.
Then he will make his real choice –– Joe Lieberman, that fine, understanding independent Democrat who knows the right and real American party, the Republicans. He can justify his decision to the far-right religious fanatics as being forced on him by the evil liberals. He will beg for understanding and what is best for the Republican Party. And guess what? He will win the election. And, of course, Palin will get a few millions for the terrible way she was treated. Now do you get it?

Why do we separate districts in Escondido?
Why do the Escondido taxpayers continue to fund two separate school districts during an economic downturn when the state continues to force our city to slash budgets meant for our children's education? I do believe both districts have done their best to cut budgets with as minimal an impact on our students as possible, but the question remains to be answered. Why do we fund two separate school districts in our city?

Proof of the failure of abstinence-only
I feel strongly that candidate's children should not be fodder for the talk shows and blogosphere. However, the pregnancy of Sarah Palin's 17-year-old daughter should prove instructive as to the failure of abstinence-only sex education.

McCain's so-called maverick mind
"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno." This crude joke was made during the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal by Sen. John McCain in June of 1998. Told during a Republican fund-raiser, I find this attempt at humor a fascinating insight into the mind of this so-called maverick, John McCain. Notice what he finds funny? Lesbianism and a young girl's and older lady's physical appearance. He manages to insult three women with only one two-line joke. Just makes you want to guffaw out loud, right?
I guess these Tailhook-type Air Force guys just can't help themselves. McCain ended up apologizing to the Clintons, and the matter seems to have disappeared over the years. Seems that none of the major papers at the time were brave enough to actually publish the whole of McCain's hilarious "joke." I find it repellent, on a par with "bomb bomb bomb Iran." Do we really want a doddering old fool as our next president of the United States?

From Denver with hope
Even the most jaded watched, fascinated, at citizen participation, enthusiasm, skill and hope that flowed from the Democratic convention. We will shed the mediocrity, the failure of the Bush years. Now the best and brightest will work on our behalf. The inept gallery of Brownie, Rummy, Alberto Gonzales and their battering of the Constitution will fade. Capability will replace politics and blind loyalty in the conduct of the people#'s business.
Now, impulsive maverick McCain, in his first official act, selects a candidate for the base, a candidate with pathetic credentials. Here we go again!

Obama has better approach to foreign affairs
Who better to deal with Russia? After the USSR collapsed, the United States: 1. decreased Russia's influence in countries on Russia's borders by accepting them into NATO, 2. supported the Orange Revolution to get a West-friendly regime in Ukraine, 3. set up missile bases in Poland, and 4. allowed McCain to interfere in foreign affairs, encouraging anti-Russian attacks via his foreign affairs adviser Randy Scheunemann, who as lobbyist for Georgia, conveyed McCain's support: "We are all Georgians."
A government's first duty is to protect its territory. How has the U.S. reacted against Cuba? There are no universally accepted rules about which separatist ethnic groups to support for statehood. U.S. seems to accept separation where it expands American interests (Kosovo from Serbia), but not otherwise, as in Georgia (South Ossetia), Iraq (Kurd and Sunni separation from Shia), Britain (Scots and Welch), Spain (Basque and Catalan), Belgium (Fleming and Walloon) and Canada (Quebec).
The future president will need to address these tough problems. Who best to come up with a solution? Barack Obama, who wants to explore dialogue and diplomacy, or John McCain, whose short fuse thus far has shown only a shoot-from-the-hip approach?

Homosexuality occurs in the animal kingdom
It is a convenient and oft-used charge that homosexuality is abhorrent because it isn't "natural," i.e., it didn't result in procreation and that it only exists in human practice without being present among animal species.
The fact is that homosexuality has been observed in animals by scientists for a long time. Until not too long ago, there was a kind of gentlemen's agreement not to report homosexuality in animals, which made it appear that homosexuality didn't exist among the Earth's animal populations. It's not true! The reality is that homosexual behavior occurs in more than 450 different animal species worldwide, and is found in every major geographical region and every major animal group. Read biologist Bruce Bagemih's book: "Biological Exuberance: Animal Homosexuality and Natural Diversity" (St. Martin's Press, New York, 1999).
Evidently, the Great Creator, in his plan of creation, wanted to include same-gender sex so much that he made it occur –– even though it contradicts the idea that a species or trait cannot survive without reproduction. ...

Palin a disastrous choice
Yesterday was John McCain's birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of criticizing Barack Obama for inexperience, McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency a person who, until recently, was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.
Who is Sarah Palin? She was elected Alaska's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience. None. She is strongly anti-choice, and opposes abortion even in the case of rape or incest. She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. She thinks creationism should be taught in public schools, and she doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change. She sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears on the endangered species list –– she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.
Imagine her becoming president and commander in chief of our armed forces if McCain, who has had bouts with cancer, were to die in office. What a disastrous choice!

ABC can't find time for God
Last night, after the dramatic speech of Hillary Clinton, it was announced that now would follow the closing prayer. But that did not seem important enough for ABC to broadcast! Instead, Charles Gibson and his team started to jabber, and the cameras gradually phased away from the convention hall.
The whole nation is in dramatic discussions whether to keep God in or out of our Constitution, of our Pledge of Allegiance, of school prayers, etc., much to the chagrin of all Christian citizens of this great country and our forefathers. Yet, every delegate and candidate speaking at this convention will end his/her speech with "... and God bless America." ABC did not find it necessary to give God his time at the end of that broadcast by keeping the camera rolling and their and their team's mouths shut during the delegates and attendants closing prayer. Shame on ABC.

New Cruisin' Grand mostly a good thing
We had not been to Cruisin' Grand in a few weeks. I had, however, heard about the new format, the blockades and have been reading the mostly negative comments in the paper. Remembering the old saying, "Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear," I decided to check this new venue out for myself.
On Friday, I shined up my classic, and about 4:30 we cruised down to Grand. We arrived at the Maple Street entrance and were warmly greeted, given an entrance ticket and then they explained about the new show parking and cruising. We cruised Grand a few times, and then parked near Maple. So far, so good. We then walked around town for a bit, then stopped into 150 Grand to get something to eat and see how the cruise night would pan out. At first it was slow, but the crowds did show up and the sidewalks were packed once again. Only now, there were just the classic cars cruising.
If you have not tried the new Cruisin' Grand, you should. The new format may have some bugs, but for the most part it's a good thing for actual car enthusiasts.

Break a law, face the consequences
The North County Times Aug. 11 article ("Escondido checkpoints big business") revealed that law enforcement officers have randomly conducted twice-a-month, regular checkpoints to legally crack down on drunken, unlicensed and uninsured drivers over a period of three years to reduce hit-and-run accidents. Officers found the majority of drivers checked did not have valid driver's licenses.
Immigrant rights activists complain the stops unfairly target illegal aliens, who are ineligible for state driver's licenses. Well, if these illegal alien drivers were still in their native nations, and had not broken the federal law of the U.S. by sneaking across the border, they would not have been stopped. I do not understand what the immigrant rights activists do not understand about he meaning of the word "illegal." Illegal is illegal is illegal!
What would really give these activists something to complain about would be the long-overdue and legal massive deportation of all persons in the U.S. illegally, to put them at the end of the legal immigration line, then seal the borders to curtail the now out-of-control illegal invasion of the U.S. by those who so openly break a federal law.

What is America becoming?
As a retired Naval officer, and a proud citizen of this country, I respectfully question the direction of our new wartime rules of engagement. The Marine Corps is our finest fighting service, yet it has, in my opinion, let our fine young Marines down by not rigorously defending their actions in combat with a fleeting enemy during patrols and firefights. Charging them, or allowing them to be charged with murder or manslaughter during legally defined combat operations, is inexcusable to all levels of command, including the highest levels.
Now even a civilian court has found Jose L. Nazario not guilty ("Marine not guilty in Fallujah slayings," Aug. 29). I believe that he should be allowed to sue whoever or whatever is the base organization sponsoring the charges in the first place; individual or government entities not withstanding. How can we bring our fine young men and women into the service, teach them the skills necessary to defend this country in armed combat (conflicts) and then charge them with murder or manslaughter when they perform their duties? What have we become? Failure to fight when in combat situations is a serious crime and to fight appears also to be a crime.

Desperate smear job by the left
The marching orders have gone out to the left: Destroy Sarah Palin. From the liberal beltway pundits, Maureen Dowd, Eleanor Clift and Sally Quinn to the locals, Peggy Hart and Nathan Wesley, liberals are trashing McCain's veep pick as a right-wing nut job. According to them, this was an act of desperation and, as usual, we conservatives just don't get it.
However, the real desperation is on the left. To say she has no experience is laughable, especially considering their presidential candidate's resume. Mrs. Palin, they say, is not qualified, because she doesn't believe in infanticide, she likes to hunt and fish and she is only the governor of Alaska. So she must be in the pockets of Big Oil. However, the truth is that Gov. Palin has stood up to the special interests, Big Oil, lobbyists and the good ol' boy network. She is a true reformer that Washington is sorely in need of.
Mr. Obama had his chance to pick a woman for his running mate, but instead he picked a Washington insider, Joe Biden. The same Joe Biden who told us only a few months ago that Obama was too inexperienced, not ready to be president.

Palin a pretty poor choice
Sarah Palin is unqualified to be vice president of the United States because she demonstrates a lack of fact-based thinking. For example, she supports creationism and does not believe that human activity created global warming. Would you like to know who else believes as Palin does? George W. Bush.
Why would any American support the election of a vice president whose intellect is incapable of reaching a fact-based conclusion? Can you imagine how illogical and damaging Palin's decisions would be on other important issues such as military preparedness, the U.S. economy and the protection of individual liberty? Palin is pretty –– a pretty poor choice.

Bilbray in hiding?
Thank you, Richard Riehl, for pointing out that Rep. Brian Bilbray has suddenly generated a flurry of activity just before the November election ("Whom does Bilbray represent in D.C.?," Aug. 29).
We have received four glossy fliers, mailed at taxpayers' expense, and several automated calls to join a "discussion in progress" with Rep. Bilbray. When I joined, I discovered that only pre-screened participants may speak –– the rest of us, on mute, can neither question nor comment. Hiding behind printed fliers and fixed "discussions," Rep. Bilbray apparently does not have the courage to face the voters of the 50th.
I read in the column by Gail Chatfield ("Bilbray shuns activist veterans," Sept. 1) that Rep. Bilbray refused a long-requested meeting with constituents who belong to a group called Veterans for Peace –– despite the fact that Bilbray is on the Veterans Affairs Committee and sits in his office in Solana Beach for the long summer break from Congress. We voters deserve debates between Bilbray and his opponent, Nick Leibham, and some face-to-face accountability for his time in Washington before the election in November.

Sanctimonious attitude of George Bush
How can we not be ashamed of the foreign policy statements of this president? He stands before the cameras at the Olympic games in China, and states, "It is wrong to violate the territory of a sovereign nation." Remember, this is the same man who willingly and pre-emptively invaded the sovereign nation of Iraq. An invasion and occupation based on manipulated and false intelligence –– plus outright lies!
I'm not getting into the rights and wrongs of the Russian invasion of Georgia –– that is something for the U.N. and world opinion to ponder. What I am concerned about is my U.S. leader adopting a phony, sanctimonious attitude over a crime that he himself committed –– and in much greater magnitude –– six years ago!
And why don't the mainstream media point out this obvious incongruity?

Let me see your papers wrote on Sep 6, 2008 6:33 AM:Interesting letter from Leon Smith. If what he says is true, he inadvertently makes the critic’s case of selective targeting. He writes, “Officers found the majority of drivers checked did not have valid driver's licenses.” Does anybody believe that a “random” checkpoint would show that result?
He then confirms the case with his statement, “Well, if these illegal alien drivers were still in their native nations, and had not broken the federal law of the U.S. by sneaking across the border, they would not have been stopped.” Is he saying that the officers knew in advance who was here illegally before they were stopped? Clairvoyant officers such as these could be put to much better use elsewhere.
Alas, as usual, what Mr. Smith writes is not true. In fact, the article to which Mr. Smith refers actually says, “The checkpoints involve screening hundreds of drivers. From 2005 to July 2008, the city impounded more 1,600 vehicles at its checkpoints, a majority of them from unlicensed drivers.” Which is a far cry from the majority of drivers did not have valid licenses, as Mr. Smith claims.
Much to his delight, Mr. Smith is under the assumption that the Escondido P.D. is focusing in on Hispanic looking drivers, and he’s okay with that.
Now, as professionals, the Escondido police know that checkpoints as described by Mr. Smith would not pass Constitutional muster. They understand what the word illegal means under their purview. It is illegal to drive a car without a license. That’s all. They do not ask immigration status. They do not turn people they divine to be illegal over to ICE. Much to Mr. Smith’s displeasure, I’m sure.
Illegal is illegal is illegal wrote on Sep 6, 2008 7:13 AM:Implementing Leon Smith’s desire for a massive deportation of all persons in the U.S. illegally would entail some Federal authority asking every person within the borders of the United States to prove their citizenship, immigration and/or legal residency status. That alone violates the 4th Amendment of the Constitution. To ask only those foreign looking violates the 14th Amendment.
What part of illegal does Mr. Smith not understand?

He makes all the excuses, Obama was only 8, he was in Hawaii, he didn't know the man. Now, either.. this is
the continued act of desperation trying to cover for Obama, or they really don't know for themselves, and are simply parroting response's given to them from the 1st most liberal's talking points.
I'm educating you now... So pay attention!
Dude, no one is saying he knew Bill Ayers in Hawaii. That's a dodge. However, he did know Communist Frank Marshall Davis as a teen, talks about 'Frank' in his book, smoking cigarettes and talking about life. It's pretty clear, if you have even read "Dreams from My Father", {have you read it?} that Obama was lost, he says so, no father to speak of, and this is critical to understanding Obama...
No Black father figuire to speak of, and he was searching as a teenager, and that search lead him to Frank Marshall Davis, a known communist, in whom he found comfort.
Frank Davis was the one who encouraged Obama to follow his footsteps into community organizing, back to Chicago, and right into the arms of one Gerald Kellman. Kellman is a known Saul Alinsky disciple, who received money from the Woods Foundation to hire Obama as an organizer. The Woods Foundation lead him to Bill Ayers, by way of Alice Palmer, and she's a real gem to read about too.
He then joined a radical church, who's liberation theology was first preached by James Cone {who's book is for sale on the church's website}, Malcolm X, and Stokely Carmichael, taught by Rev. Wright, and accepted by Obama in his 20 year memebership in this church. And he stayed because in his 1st book book he writes: "...white folks’ greed runs a world in need..."
Quoting the wrong Rev. Wright.
What this shows is his progression in his thinking, as mentored by these radicals.
The key question I always like to ask is: How do you become associated with all these radicals, unless... your looking for them? Birds of a feather, flock together. Or as my Mom used to say: I can tell a lot about you, by the company you keep.

Now all they have to do is get the voters to forget all about the past eight years. McCain has his afterburners on putting distance between himself and Bush.
Eight years ago the Republican Party rejected McCain, smeared mercilessly by the Bush team. Now, after eight years of vehement defense of whatever Bush did, the Republicans would have us believe that they embrace McCain, who purports to reject some of Bush’s policies.
Could it be that they only stood by Bush because he was a fellow Republican? Or are they only backing McCain because he’s a fellow Republican? It's either or.

Well, I am told by my good friends that Obama is a constitutional lawyer, taught constitutional law, and president of the Harvard Law Review.
Last night I heard Obama say: "I believe in the 2nd Amendment, and if you are a law-abiding gun owner you have nothing to fear from an Obama administration."
As he normally does, he went on to fill in his comments about the second amendment, but what he then said, exposed more of the typical double talk we've seen from him all along.
He kept on refering to the "traditions" of gun ownership in conjunction with "hunting." First of all, it is NOT a tradition, it's a constitutional right.
The 2nd one in the Constitution, by the way, right after free speech. I think the Founders were conveying a subtext here for us, "when the right of free speech goes, out come the guns."
THAT's the tradition, not hunting.
That's the first problem with this constitutional scholar.
Next, and my teeth nearly dropped out of my head...
But the guy actually said: "And even if I wanted to {ban guns}, I got plenty of people in the Congress that won't let me do it."
Oh, really?
The Federal Assault Weapons Ban (AWB),
subtitled of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994.
In the House, which was controlled by Democrats, it passed by 384 votes.
In the Senate, 95/4/1 that included 40 Republican Senators voting YES.
And this statement on the heels of a Supreme Court decision the guy flipped over on.
I'm telling ya, he is a box of chocolates.
If anyone recalls the debate at that time, one of the more "controversial" provisions overturned the Higher Education Act of 1965 {LBJ & Great Society} permitting prison inmates to receive a Pell Grants. Yes, "controversial", at the same time we had lib's screaming about education and schools lacking funding, they cried over defunding this.
But, this is what I mean about lib's, they literally steal money from the truly needy, in order to give it to other's they determine are "more deserving", on whatever basis that is.
I can't figuire it out.

Obama has never even served as a Boy Scout while Sarah is Commander in Chief of the Alaska National Guard, all 4000 of them, has deployed Guardsmen and appointed each officer commissioned or promoted since she became governor.

Now, had she have been a liberal woman.

Of how she had to react to a situation to protect a 10-year old boy who had been tazered by this officer. This same officer had abused his wife, and then threatened her father. Has also been accused of drinking on the job, and no body would do anything. She had to do, what she had to do, in order to protect the citizens of Alaska against this out of control cop, when no body else would.
She would be lauded as a hero, for protecting people and going after coruption inside the police force.
And, it just so happens that the people involved, the citizens attacked by this outrageously abusive cop, were members of her family. But, she would have done the same, for any other citizen.

Eight years ago the Republican Party rejected McCain, smeared mercilessly by the Bush team. Now, after eight years of vehement defense of whatever Bush did, the Republicans would have us believe that they embrace McCain, who purports to reject some of Bush’s policies.

2: a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

Would you call the raids on the homes of people who WERE GOING TO protest at the RNC "forcible suppression of opposition"?
How about "prior restraint"?
How about "police state"?
I would call all the above FASCISM which was perpetrated by FASCISTS who acted in an un-Constitutional manner.
If you disagree, look at the Webster definition above.

Controversial statements, positions, relationships {not family}, business aquaintances, etc. Should all be open for examination. And, rightly so.
Personally, I'd like to hear a little more about Joe Biden, and his professional relationships with his two sons, who are either lobbyists or politicians. I don't think that should be out of bounds. If Palin's husband was a lobbyist, as was former Senator Tom Daschle's wife, Linda, by the way a Boeing lobbyist, I think those relationships are open to scruntiny. For example, his older son Joseph "Beau" Biden is currently the
Attorney General of Delaware. Do you think they ever had opportunties to "work together" on common political interests?
Or we could talk about the younger son,
Hunter Biden, who worked as a lobbyist. Apparently, Sen. Barack Obama sought $3.4 million in congressional earmarks for clients of the lobbyist, Hunter Biden, son of his Democratic VP running mate. And by chance... just by chance now. Joe Biden wanted the bankrupcy bill Hunter was being paid to lobby for.
You think they ever talked about that?Maybe over breakfast at the Biden compound? Never?
By the way, Delaware has more credit card companies, than most other states.
Joe Biden, Federal Senator pushing the bill for his consituents. Son "Beau" Biden as sitting AG of the State of Delaware, and then Hunter Biden paid to lobby for this bill, and given money my Obama as an earmark?
Still think they never talked about this, over a bagel, some juice, and a little coffee? I do.

The Precautionary Principle is always at work and it is well addressed in an article by Jim Manzi in The Weekly Standard. (Manzi is former CEO and president of Lotus Corporation.)
The Precautionary Principle states that the downside of some pending disaster is so great that almost ANY price is not too little to pay.
(“The Precautionary Principle is a bottomless pit of anxieties, but our resources (to address our anxieties) are finite.” In Manzi’s view.)
In 1866, Gladstone warned Britain that Britain had a coal crises – it was running out of coal, and indeed it was. Mind you, the earth was not running out of coal, just Britain, but Britain could not predict that the world would have both a surplus of coal AND the means to supply it to Britain, or something even better – oil.
Ever since oil was first found and utilized there has been a running prediction that oil will also run out, usually 20 years from “now” – but “now” keeps changing. In 1956, a famous Shell Oil geologist (King Hubbert) predicted peak oil production in the 70s, then in 1974 the same geologist predicted 1995. The current International Energy Agency prediction calls for INCREASING production through 2030, and the US Department of Energy says sometimes near the middle of the century.
Manzi argues that whatever the threat, a technological and strong economic society is better able to address that threat but that bankrupting a nation in pursuit of a .predicted but not yet measured threat (as in Kyoto or similar treaties), is not warranted.

Well, ok, but did you know that per capita, the people of Red State Alaska receive more federal dollars than thse of any other state? And according to a resident of Wasilla (whose claims have been verifies by snopes) Palin increased town government spending by 33% and increased taxes there by 38%. She redecorated her mayoral office at taxpayers' expense more than once. She did away with a progressive income tax, replacing it with a sales tax that hurt poor people more than wealthy people. When she took her oath as mayor, Wasilla had a debt of zero dollars. When she left, the little town's debt was $22 million. She borrowed money so the town would build her pet project, a sports complex, and questions about the legality of this deal are still in litigation with an army of very happy lawyers on the case.
