SAN YSIDRO ---- It sure didn't take long for San Marcos High football coach Pulu Poumele to get his first victory.
In the team's season opener, the Knights pummeled San Ysidro 69-12 to give the former Oceanside High defensive coordinator his first win as a head coach.
"It's a big monkey off my back," Poumele said. "It takes a lot of pressure off and now I am a little relieved, but I know there is a lot more work to be done, and that excites me."
San Marcos running back Ryan Cochrane carried 12 times for 118 yards and four touchdowns. The senior also returned an interception 40 yards for his fifth score of the night before he was taken out in the third quarter.
Cochrane was one of 11 players who ran the ball for San Marcos. Josh White was the team's second-leading rushing with 60 yards on six carries, including one touchdown.
The team also did it through the air, as quarterback Sebastian Vader connected on two long passes for touchdowns. His first went to Imari Davis for 31 yards at the start of the second quarter. His second was a 40-yard strike to Martin Ramirez to close out the half. Vader finished 7-for-11 for 166 yards.
Davis put on quite a show, cutting and diving between tackles each time he touched the ball. The junior touched the ball only three times, but gained 82 yards. Â
"Every time I get the ball I want to get in the end zone," Davis said. "For some reason the cutting and moving around just comes natural to me."
Two other players also scored for San Marcos, which won just two games in 2007. Carlos Hargett opened the scoring with a 13-yard run and Will Monroe ran in a 2-yard quarterback keeper to close out the scoring in the fourth quarter.
Up next for San Marcos is cross-town rival Mission Hills. Poumele said the team's first victory should help going into the big game.
"Obviously, going in we know it's going to be a tall task, but these kids are ready," he said. "And after this game with the confidence this team has, practice is going to be very high in intensity and the coaches have to get the players ready to play Mission Hills."
