Presidio Brass Quintet to perform
ESCONDIDO ---- The Music Series of First United Methodist Church of Escondido will present a concert by the Presidio Brass Quintet at 3 p.m. Sept. 7 in the church sanctuary, 341 S. Kalmia St. The group will perform works for its upcoming CD, "Cinematic! Music from the Movies." A reception to greet the musicians will follow. Free-will offering. Call (760) 745-5100.
Senior Center plans 'Western Week'
SAN MARCOS ---- The San Marcos Senior Center, 111 W. Richmar Ave., will hold its annual "Western Week" Sept. 8-12.
The local band Sundance will perform Sept. 9, and the Boot Scootin' Mamas will give a line dancing demonstration Sept. 11. The entertainment will begin at 10:45 a.m. each day in the center's Discovery Cafe.
Those who would like to stay for lunch must reserve the day before by calling (760) 744-5535. City Council candidates forum set
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Chamber of Commerce will host an Escondido City Council candidates forum at 7 a.m. Sept. 9 at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane.
Participating City Council candidates are Sam Abed, Richard Barron, Olga Diaz, Dennis French, Ed Gallo and Chuck Voelker. Moderator will be Angelo Damante of Mercedes-Benz, Escondido. A buffet breakfast will be available for $15; $10 for chamber members.

Groups to discuss Christmas parade
ESCONDIDO ---- The city's Police Department, city staff and the Escondido Jaycees have been working on a plan to finance and deliver the Escondido Christmas Parade in 2008.
On Sept. 10, there will be two meetings that may decide the fate of this longtime Escondido event. The first will be the East Valley Association meeting at 8:30 a.m. at the East Valley Community Center. There will be a brief update on happenings on the east side of Escondido, then Wally Gutierrez, president of the Escondido Jaycees, will explain the status of the parade planning. The Jaycees will meet to discuss the parade at 6:30 p.m. that day at Cocina Del Charro restaurant. All are welcome. Information: www.escondidojaycees.org; www.eastvalleyassociation.org.
Garden club to meet Sept. 10
POWAY ---- The Poway Valley Garden Club will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 10 in Templars Hall at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
Mary Pitino and Barbara Tolliver of Poway Nursery will speak on "Brilliant Container Landscaping." Learn to plant containers to brighten up small spaces such as patios, decks and entryways. Tour Poway Nursery after the meeting.

Support groups to meet
ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council offers these support groups in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway, in the Joslyn Senior Center complex.
-- The Better Breathers Club will meet from 1-3 p.m. Sept. 10. The support and education group is for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The group meets the second Wednesday of odd-numbered months. (760) 480-0611.

Fine arts group to host demo
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The North County Society of Fine Arts will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Bernardo Heights Community Center, 16150 Bernardo Heights Parkway.
Self-taught mixed media artist and teacher Linda Moore will demonstrate how she achieves the beautiful effects by using rubber stamps and other techniques. Refreshments and a question and answer time will follow.

Ballot propositions will be discussed
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Democratic Club will conclude its discussion of state ballot issues at its next meeting set for 10:30 a.m. Sept. 13 at the North County Unity Democratic Campaign Office, 135 E. Grand Ave.
These ballot propositions will be discussed: same-sex marriage (Proposition 8), humane treatment of farm animals (Proposition 2) and several criminal justice measures (Propositions 5, 6 and 9).

Hearing-loss group to meet

Theatre in the Park to perform 'The Hobbit'
POWAY ---- Theatre in the Park, sponsored by the city of Poway and the Poway Woman's Club, will present the play version of "The Hobbit" at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12, 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 and 2 p.m. Sept. 14 in Templars Hall at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
The cast is made up of children ages 10 to 14. In "The Hobbit," Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon, Smaug.

Democratic Club to host speaker

'Papel Picado' class offered
RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The Rancho Penasquitos Branch Library, 13330 Salmon River Road, will offer a free class on "Papel Picado ---- Mexican Art of Papercutting" from 10:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 13.
Papel Picado is a traditional folk art used in Mexico to create colorful and intricate decorations for tables, windows, ceilings, altars and banners for outdoor festivals.

Music missionary to perform
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Award-winning composer, pianist and singer John Angotti will present an evening of music and reflection at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at San Rafael Church, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive.
Angotti is a music missionary who travels throughout the United States and abroad with his musical message of faith and hope.

SM Rotary plans golf tourney
SAN MARCOS ---- The Rotary Club of San Marcos will host a golf tournament Oct. 8 at the Twin Oaks Golf Tournament. Proceeds will benefit the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos and other Rotary charities.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m.; shotgun start is at 12:30 p.m. A silent auction and awards dinner will follow at 6 p.m. The tournament will include putting, longest drive and closest-to-the pin contests. Player fee of $125 includes lunch, driving range practice, tee packages, golf and dinner. Cost for additional dinner guests is $30.

Toastmasters Club has new president
ESCONDIDO ---- Patricia Romero recently was installed as president of the CLA Bilingual Toastmasters Club No. 1114216. Other officers installed were Alicia Moreno, vice president education; Jose Fragozo, vice president membership; Patricia Robinson, secretary; Arnoldo Vargas, treasurer; and Mike Vargas, sergeant-at-arms.
