EDITORIAL: NCTimes' process for election nods

OUR VIEW: Paper tends to support advocates of less government

By North County Times Opinion staff | Sunday, September 7, 2008 12:17 AM PDT

Editors' note: Some readers have asked whether and how the North County Times would be doing what many call "endorsements" for the November election. The answer is yes. In the spirit of openness, here is some background concerning the paper's recommendations.

During the next few weeks, the North County Times will be publishing its recommendations on some issues and races on the November ballot.

Most of the paper's recommendations will be based on the same information available to all voters: What can be read on the print and electronic pages of the North County Times; what is read in, or heard from, other trustworthy news sources; what is known or learned of individuals' past or ongoing performance; and what can be observed at candidate forums.

The North County Times tends to support those candidates who recognize the importance of and support the need for individual rights and initiative, private enterprise and sound, tight fiscal policies. The paper also supports less government intrusion into individuals' lives.

In addition, the paper will tend to support those office-seekers willing to wrangle with public employee unions over the relatively lavish retirement benefit packages that now exist. We will support those candidates who seek a two-tier benefits system; one that leaves in place our obligations to existing employees but one where new hires are offered benefits more similar to those available in the private sector.

Some of the paper's recommendations will be based on additional information, including editorial board meetings with candidates in a few local races.

In those cases, all candidates in that contest have been asked to participate in one group meeting with the editorial board. However, given time constraints and the sheer number, such group meetings are not possible for all local races or issues.

As is always the case with views printed in this space, the paper's recommendations do not have any bearing on how the newsroom staff covers and presents the news.

Likewise, we continue to encourage all eligible residents to register to vote; those already registered should make sure they are properly registered.

And above all else, we strongly urge all residents to take the time to study the candidates and the issues, and then vote.

La La Land wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:29 AM:So, the NCT will not be endorsing candidates endorsed by public safety associations. In Oceanside, only a few years ago the city was rocked with crime, leading to the unprecedented death of two officers. The city raised the salaries to be competitive with the rest of the county, hired more officers and a new police chief. Now the city is enjoying the lowest crime rate in 30 years! Sounds like you get what you pay for. Sounds like the NCT would rather have high crime and blood on their hands rather than pay officers -- let's not stop there, ANY public servant -- what they are worth. I'm not sure I'm going to take rely on NCT's endorsements.

Anti-Labor wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:34 AM:Just last Monday, the paper paid homage to the men who gave their lives for the 8 hour work day. Sweatshops, where children work 15 hours a day or more, still exist in other countries, and the fact that there's a market for the clothes in this country ties us into the act. Today, the NCT is condemning unions. Never mind that there is no civilian equivalent. Never mind that the city MAKES money on emergency responses via ambulance transport. Sounds schizophrenic. Which is it -- ok to have better response times and a fiscal operation or anti-union rhetoric?

Group Interview wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:35 AM:Sounds like the "editors" have already decided who they are going to endorse. Has their endorsement EVER really mattered???!!!

Huh wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:41 AM:Feller voted for the 3% at 50 for public safety, so I guess the paper will not be endorsing him. Question -- who is going to respond to the 911 calls when Oceanside's officers all leave for better salaries? A better question -- at a time of high inflation where the price of energy and cost of insurance is eating into mortgage payments, and mortgages have become unbearable for some, how irresponsible is it for the paper to talk about "lavish" wages of the public sector? Newspaper employees must be paid really well and/or have something to look forward to after foregoing all the other income they could have earned.

Sound tight fiscal policies wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:45 AM:I guess that means that anyone who voted to spend $ 1/2 million for fireworks that no one was able to see was fiscally irresponsible; and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for Mainstreet, Welcome Center, Museum of Art and Surf Museum is also fiscally irresponsible? By the way, if my memory serves me, the Oceanside City Council voted 5-0 for the employee contracts. Blah, blah, blah

What a joke wrote on Sep 7, 2008 5:56 AM:The NC times says they support private enterprise and tight fiscal policy. Is this a joke? Is this editorial staff Bipolar or do they have a split personality disorder? Who knows, but these are the same people that supported a hospital bond that would have cost north county residents over $1.2 BILLION to repay to build part of a facility. Give me a break!

Voter wrote on Sep 7, 2008 8:54 AM:I will vote for every candidate or proposition the NCT DOES NOT endorse. Thank you for your help!

Sylvia wrote on Sep 7, 2008 9:57 AM:It appears that the Times already has made their minds up= the policies espoused here are pretty right wing Republican. This paper is making itself irrelevant.
Based on that idea, I will be voting against Jack Feller and Rocky Chavez. They have voted for every developer and take tons of money from them. They leave us crummy projects then leave town. I will vote for neighborhood friendly fiscal conservatives like Chuck Lowery.

To Sylvia wrote on Sep 7, 2008 10:13 AM:Irrelevant? This rag is read for entertainment only?

Oh Dearie Me wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:10 PM:Per the editorial: "The North County Times tends to support those candidates who recognize the importance of and support the need for individual rights and initiative, private enterprise and sound, tight fiscal policies."

That leaves McCain out. So, oh dear, what will the NC Times do? Endorse the Natural Law Party candidate? Because we all know they'd never support someone who really does believe in individual rights, nacking the little guy and fiscal responsibility like, you know, a true liberal does.

Wake up NC Times editors, you're all dinosaurs being left behind (and not the Rapture kind of left behind).

Union member wrote on Sep 7, 2008 1:15 PM:The NCT will endorse candidates who offer new public employees benefits more in line with what the private sector offers. How nice of you, that means: minimum wage, no health insurance or retirement. I can only assume that is the way employees , including editors, at the NCT are compensated and explains your ridiculous editorial positions. Jealousy is not an opinion.

To Union Member wrote on Sep 7, 2008 10:21 PM:This paper IS starting to sound like a dime a dozen right wing operative propaganda rag. It's getting harder and harder to keep my subscription up because of that.
Privatization: that's exactly why I will never vote for Feller, Chavez or Gibson. They want to take away our paramedics and ruin our public safety system. Privatizing mandatory services to the community has never worked.
No on Feller. No on Chavez. No on Gibson.

MJ wrote on Sep 7, 2008 10:21 PM:just started checking yur website religiously-you certainly seemed to have ticked a few people off-what's the deal? this is America-you got your opinion, just like your writers have theirs-what's with all the veiled (and non-veiled) threats? for crying out loud, if you don't like what's offered in the way of health and pension, then negotiate for what you want or move to a worker's paradise, like cuba or china. what's wrong with you folks?

Papa Marine wrote on Sep 8, 2008 12:05 AM:Was this editorial written as a joke or by someone who was drunk or loaded? Who do you think would come towork for the city if they were doing the same work without the same benefits which is what you are advocation? I will assure you that no public safety officer will work under such circumstances. Up until just lately Oceanside was losing cops and firefighters to cities who pay better and have better benefits. I guess we could get newspaper employees who are used to being taken for a ride by the employers. Wait, I forgot, maybe we could hire Barney from Mayberry. Trust your wife and kids to him. I thought editors were supposed to be literate and smart. Well, you learn something new everyday.

Confused wrote on Sep 8, 2008 12:45 AM:Isn't the North County Times losing its business? So, in matters of business, why should we take advice from people who are not able to be succesful? I agree -- I should probably support the candidates the NCT does NOT endorse. How about this -- how about the NCT NOT telling me how to vote!

Bipolar wrote on Sep 8, 2008 4:13 AM:The editors are union busters! The editors are free-spending liberals! The editors begrudge selfless public servants their rightful wages! Sounds like some of these people read an editorial one time and they didn't like it.

Take Gibson Please wrote on Sep 8, 2008 6:41 AM:Please elect Jim Gibson to Oceanside City Council. We in VUSD have had him long enough. Someone else should have the benefit of his emotion laden "wisdom" and his "black or white" approach to complex issues. Please, please vote Jim Gibson Oceanside City Council.

Heck No wrote on Sep 8, 2008 9:58 AM:We don't want Gibson either. He's just a clone for the pave-over-everything council majority of KFC, Kern Feller Chavez. He's not someone I'd ever vote for. They are giving our City away to their Developer Friends.

Rick K wrote on Sep 8, 2008 2:09 PM:The North County Times shows its bias every year and there is no guessing who they will support. Lets see the North County Times makes money by increasing circulation and classified sales. So it behooves them to support candidates that champion uncontrolled growth. The more houses the more circulation. NCT would love to see Oceanside become a city of 500,000+ so who do you think they will support? You guessed it Chavez, Feller, and Gibson. No brainer! NCT don't even bother to show your endorsement we already know. But perhaps you could not be so biased this year attacking candidates against your blessed Three like you did in last election. Haven't seen too many cartoons of Rocky, and Feller but you sure went out of your way with cartoons against Mackin, Wood, and Sanchez. Just admit it. You are not unbiased and the citizens can respect the truth.
Kinda like you did not inhale or have sex with that woman.

To Rick wrote on Sep 8, 2008 4:24 PM:Great comments. Unbiased? North County Times? Real news? HA HA HA!

Funny Stuff wrote on Sep 10, 2008 10:44 PM:Nctimes again is showing its biased. Rather than being concerned about big business and those companies who are in bed with politicians, they go after government employees. Lets keep things in perspective, who got us into this foreclosure mess, its corrupt business and politicians looking the other way. Not the cops and firemen who go to work everyday to risk their lives for even those who wrote this "funny" article. Look at the big picture.

joke rag wrote on Sep 11, 2008 3:50 PM:I thought that a newspaper's directive is to report the facts, not to interject their opinion onto the citizens to sway them for causes the benefit the newspaper and not the people. I would say 'stick to the facts', but that doesn't happen either.

AHH THATS THE SPIRIT wrote on Sep 26, 2008 11:37 PM:So much for that left wing TOLERANCE and compassionate attitude. Yesiree! Live and let live! That's what we fair minded liberal types always say - until someone disagrees with us. LOL!!!
