Proposition 2 will not help chickens

Passage of Proposition 2 will not ensure that California consumers buy eggs produced by cage-free chickens. Passage of Prop. 2 will only ensure that California ranchers will produce eggs from cage-free chickens. Eggs produced outside the state, from areas as far away as Arkansas and Mexico, will still come from caged chickens.

If the proponents of Prop. 2 are sincere and genuine in their concern for the well-being of individual chickens, they will amend the proposition to prohibit the sale in the state of California of eggs produced by caged chickens from any place. I am not an egg rancher.

Celebrate the Constitution

The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, encourages all citizens to celebrate Constitution Day, Sept. 17, as well as Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23. The DAR, the largest women's patriotic organization in the world, has long promoted patriotism. This year is the 221nd anniversary of the signing of this marvelous document. Honor the courage of our Founding Fathers by studying the Constitution, knowing your rights and fulfilling your responsibilities.

Extraterritorial judicial act

A federal civilian jury has found a U.S. Marine not guilty of manslaughter in a killing in Iraq ("Marine not guilty in Fallujah slayings," Aug. 29). The Marine was not subject to recall for court-martial because he had completed his committed time of active and inactive service to the Marines. So the federal government, citing a never-before-used law, written by our Congress and signed by the president in the year 2000, charged the Marine with a crime supposedly committed during his service in Iraq.

I believe Congress and the president intended the Extraterritorial Judicial Act to show people around the world that we of the U.S.A. are on the global path. It certainly shows that our Congress will throw American servicemen to the wolves for a political purpose. ... We are demonstrating, with this law, to recruits that they should be very selective in who they kill, because the U.S. government will be watching and is apt to charge them with a homicide after they come home. ... These 18-year-old boys and girls will be required to make snap decisions and no mistakes. Decisions that seasoned police officers have a hard time coping with.

Congress must rescind and do away with the Military Extraterritorial Judicial Act.

Shallow and pitiful criticism about a ponytail

How shallow and pitiful can one person's letter be, such as the one by Jan Fisher (Letters, Sept. 4), who criticizes Sarah Palin about her ponytail, which by the way, wasn't in a ponytail, but merely pulled back on both sides. If this is all that can be said about this wonderful, caring woman, who holds true family values and isn't intimated by big-mouth blowhards and is pretty on top of all that, well, I say someone is scared.

You bet she is not Hillary Clinton by any means, shape or form. Sarah Palin has class, demeanor, personality, ethics, social skills and walks the walk. The venom being spewed can be seen for what it is, running scared, afraid; and we all know how soccer moms get things done, not by whining, not passing the buck, not by lies and back-door deals but by setting standards for the game, having the team ready, going the extra mile to get the job done, and that is what Sarah Palin will do as our next vice president.

Political correctness is enemy of clarity

Regarding David Horwitz, Letters, July 23: Understand, no matter how good homosexual propaganda sounds, it can always be proven false. With respect to the homosexual agenda: U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia wrote in Lawrence vs. Texas, "Today's opinion is the product of a law-profession culture that has largely signed on to the so-called homosexual agenda, by which I mean the agenda promoted by homosexual activists directed at eliminating the moral opprobrium that has traditionally attached to homosexual conduct."

"The Overhauling of Straight America" (1987) ... was incorporated into the book, "After The Ball," which was self-described as a gay manifesto. It's alarming, and downright scary, to notice the exactness with which this agenda/manifesto has been executed. ...

Richard Kirk's statement, that homosexuals "favor changing society's most fundamental institution," is true ("Shoving conscience in a closet," July 15).ˇPeople must understand that homosexuality is an alternate lifestyle. Example ““ emotional monogamy in lieu of sexual monogamy. "Alternate lifestyle" is the phrase that activists frequently used to describe homosexuality before the politically correct "sexual orientation" was coined. Remember, political correctness is the enemy of clarity!

Ponder Palin very carefully

We now know the emperor has no clothes. After months of campaigning and pretending to be a more-moderate Republican, John McCain has selected Gov. Sarah Palin. Some will say that he had to pick this radical to garner the disenchanted Hillary supporters. I beg to disagree. Anyone who would vote for Gov. Palin could never be a Hillary supporter.

Let me count the ways. All the media have described Gov. Palin as a "social conservative." Definition: A right-wing radical Christian who would prefer we have a theocracy so they may foist their beliefs on the rest of the populace. Gov. Palin fits this perfectly. She is an avid hunter who likes downing nature's stately creatures. Somehow I don't think she needs these animals for sustenance! No form of abortion is acceptable, even in the event of rape or incest! She never met an oil well she didn't like. Hates any form of protection for native species. Completely discounts any connection between human activity and global warming. She has never let any form of science obscure her judgment. ...

Remember, at John McCain's age, there is a fairly good chance of Gov. Palin becoming president. Ponder this very carefully!

Palin's got a great future in Republican Party

Sarah Palin gave an exciting speech at the Republican convention. She said Obama has accomplished nothing in his time in the Senate. Obama worked with a well-respected Republican and fellow Foreign Relations Committee member to enact the Lugar-Obama nonproliferation bill, which helps keep WMDs out of the hands of foreign terrorists. Obama also worked with Sen. Feingold on lobbyist ethics reform. She lied.

She said she told Congress "Thanks, but no thanks" for the infamous Bridge To Nowhere pork-barrel project, but neglects to mention that she supported it until it became a national joke. To borrow a meme, she was before it before she was against it. And Alaska kept the money. She lied.

She says Obama wants to raise your taxes, but that's only true if your income is $250,000 or more. Otherwise, your Obama tax cut is bigger than McCain's. She lied.

Voters can decide for themselves whether Palin is the best-qualified VP candidate for McCain to have chosen, but it's clear that she has the primary ability required to succeed in the GOP ““ she can shamelessly lie on camera.

Ponytail letter had to be a joke

In referring to Jan Fisher's letter concerning Sarah Palin's ponytail (Letters, Sept. 4), I have to believe that the North County Times printed this knowing it would receive a flood of rebuttals, or just because it is so funny that the editors just had to print it. When have ponytails gone out of style?

As I guy, I agree with Rush Limbaugh that Sarah Palin is a babe, and I am proud of her intellect and, oh yeah, the grand-slam speech she gave on Wednesday night at the Republican national convention. If I were to get funny and stupid, let's compare Sarah Palin's ponytail to Hillary Clinton's 1970s pantsuits. No wonder this country is in trouble: There are voters like Jan Fisher out in the world voting.

Time to accept gay marriage and move on

According to a law in Michigan, if you are a woman, your hair belongs to your spouse, and you need permission before you can change it, one example of many antiquated laws still on the books that reflect the prejudices of past times.

Laws that denied rights to women and all sorts of ethnic and religious groups have been enforced throughout time and appear ridiculous to us in today's context. Luckily, many of these laws have been overturned by the courts.

Now we have many people who want to change a recent law that grants gay and lesbian people the right to marry. This would make it illegal again for two people in love who want to commit to one another for life to have a legal ceremony and document, allowing them all the privileges that heterosexual married couples have always enjoyed. Unfortunately, humans create laws, so they are not always just laws. We want to marginalize people we do not accept, so we create laws that deny them their basic rights. It is time to accept gay marriage and move on.

Sarah Palin, no role model

It is an abomination that the mother of a pregnant teenager stands to take on the vice presidency and possibly the presidency of the U.S. Sarah Palin has proven herself to be a weak parent. If she can't be a strong leader in her own home, how is she going to lead your country? ...

Teenage motherhood pigeonholes young women and their babies into a downward spiral of poverty and missed opportunities. Instead of praising Bristol for deciding to have her baby, pro-lifers should be empowering women by praising those who get an education, travel and do community service before assigning themselves to motherhood. Who am I to judge? I was a 17-year-old mother. I did get my BA and my son does work for a Fortune 500 company, but the struggle to get there nearly killed us. ...

Sarah Palin signed up for the job the day she gave birth to her first child. Motherhood should never be construed as a side job or a hobby. What Sarah's children need from her in their early years can't be provided by a nanny. Don't eat the immorality that John McCain's feeding you. We need role models in Washington, women who send a message to our girls that there is more to life than getting pregnant before they're ready.

Melinda Santa Cruz

Mom of pregnant teen should stay home

Before she spoke Wednesday night, the people of this country did not know much about Sarah Palin. Now, if we listened carefully, we know that she is vindictive, condescending and dismissive of those who try to help others; we know she can deliver insulting verbal zingers. We know she can lie with a straight face and a smile. Yes, she did support the Bridge to Nowhere. We know she can distort facts ” yes, she did lobby for, and get, earmarks from the Alaskan congressional delegation to the tune of $50 million for a town of, at that time, less than 6,000 people. ...

But how much did it tell us about her extremist positions? She doesn't even support abortion in the case of rape or incest. She believes in censorship. While mayor of Wasilla, she tried to fire a city librarian because the librarian refused to remove books that Sarah wanted removed. Quoting Anne Lemme, "one burning question ---- important because it speaks of character: What kind of mother thrusts her own 17-year-old unwed, pregnant daughter into the national stage for her own political gain?"

The value of ponytails

In response to the letter from Jan Fisher regarding Sarah Palin (Letters, Sept. 4), since when does hair reflect character? Even your idol Hillary wouldn't dismiss a woman for her personal grooming choices. Good thing for you that Hillary doesn't wear a ponytail.

The political theme of the year seems to be tolerance and acceptance. Let's all try to focus on that.

Chain of command

Last night I had a dream. McCain won the presidency but succumbed to a heart attack within the first six months. Palin became president, but was quickly brought down by the as-yet-unresolved Troopergate scandal. Nancy Pelosi became president. Was it a dream or a nightmare? Guess that depends on your point of view.

Self-righteous America

Hallelujah! America has just experienced a miracle. Except for the Palin family. Overnight, the country has become holy and righteous, or is that self-righteous? I would venture to bet that if an honest census were taken of our federal, state and local legislators and leaders, we would not find 10 percent who were virginal when married or stayed true to their vows. In fact, I would suppose the same percentage holds true for the letter-writers who are out to smear. How many of their families have suffered the same fate as the Palins? Oh, that's right. We don't hold them to the same standard, do we?

Feller does not belong in city government

Councilman Jack Feller said it's intimidating to have firefighters in the Council chambers ("Oceanside firefighters union makes presence felt at City Hall," Aug. 31). Intimidating. That's not a word I'd use about our firefighters. In fact, when I see them, I am proud of them and the police who serve our city so well.

Feller criticizes our safety personnel, who actually provide a necessary service to our community, but has absolutely no problem going to the [public] trough. ... Does Feller think that eating pancakes and rubber-chicken dinners fulfills his promise as a public servant and he serves our community more than our police and firefighters do?

Our council must be focused on firefighter and police retention. Instead, Feller's ... panders to our community by going to sporting events while he fails to grasp the basics of what a City Council member is actually supposed to do ““ keep our community safe. Anyone who is intimidated by firefighters at a public meeting needs to examine his conscience, morals and yes, his own ... issues. Feller does not belong in city government.

Look past personality and at issues

I understand the fascination with Sarah Palin. We Americans love our Western frontier characters. But this woman is not in a movie or book or TV show; she is nominated to be the second in command of our country. Please look past the romance of her biography and seriously look at her positions on issues that will affect us all.

Palin has said she hasn't thought about the Iraq war much, it's "God's task" we're about in Iraq, she's been concentrating on state issues. How can a mother with a son on duty in Iraq not think about the war?

Palin doesn't believe mankind contributes to global warming. Of course, BP oil paid for her inauguration party. Only abstinence-only can be taught in schools, and even rape and incest do not qualify for abortion. Do you think trying to fire a librarian for not supporting the mayor's quest to ban books is a vice presidential qualification?

I am asking all of you who are considering supporting the Republican Party in this most-important election, look carefully at the facts of this woman's policies and the total hypocrisy of the McCain/Palin talking points. Remember which party has been taking us for a ride the past eight years.

Lack of insight by executives doomed bond

I am writing to add to the horrible editorial, which was written by the presumably well-educated and unbiased journalist, regarding the Tri-City Medical Center propositions ("Tri-City bond defeat clouds hospital's future," Aug. 31). I understand the paper was pulling for them, but we still need balanced journalism.

As one of the leaders of the opposition, on all three propositions, I see things quite a bit differently from the esteemed staff of the North County Times. The reason why this measure was opposed was simple: TCMC has suffered from a cadre of image issues. This issue, buttressed by news reports and actions by executives, perpetuates the population's belief that the executive staff would not consider anyone's opinions but their own. ... They ignored an organized opposition and their concerns. They felt money, which they would spend, would be overwhelming enough to stifle any opposing voice.

TCMC paid the ultimate price for the executive's arrogance. They are blaming the economy now, but why did it fail two prior times? It's completely due to the lack of professionalism and insight of the executive staff.

OBAMA MAMA wrote on Sep 9, 2008 12:28 AM:Sarah Palin, JC‘s Superstar.

We once were told that every time Obama spoke, an angel had an orgasm. Now we are told that every time Palin speaks a holy child is conceived. A new superstar has arisen, whose golden tongue sends shivering ecstasy through the quaking bodies of the believers.

My! My! My! She is the spirit of evangelist Aimee Semple McPherson incarnated with the guts of Maggie Thatcher into the body of Dolly Partin.
The elements of tragedy and hysteria are there. They flare occasionally as some woman breaks under the vigil and sobs. Others in the crowd remains speechless and spellbound. And others catch the spirit and speak in tongues, consumed by the holy spirit of Republican ecstasy.

I went once as a child to a hellfire and brimstone tent revival in New Awlins. There were so many souls saved that night, freed from the power of Satan. You just had to be there to catch that awesome spirit. So I know full well what transpired in St. Paul. Yeah, in Sa-a-a-aint PAUL, Mini-Soto. PRAISE McCAIN! Hallelujah! The GOP is saved and redeemed. All is forgiven. God said all those sins are washed away!

Ever notice how it is always the preachers and politicians who are the most obsessed with other people's private behavior turn out to be the ones doing exactly the same thing they were preaching so obsessively about?
The ones who are bringing impeachments based on infidelity all having long-time adulterous affairs?

Let me repost what I discovered yesterday, after Oh Please told me Joe Biden had asthma, and that's why he couldn't serve in the miitary.

From Yesterday....
Joe Biden's yearbook is on display at Archmere Academy in Claymont, where Biden played sports and was president of his class at the private catholic school?
Played sports in high school, then "later" after the sports, he came down with asthma?
Your kidding me, right?

If you go to the Archmere Academy website, under Alumni, they write this:
"ALUMNI IN THE NEWS

Sen. Joseph R. Biden, Jr., from the class of 1961, was named the Democratic Vice Presidential nominee by Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday, August 23, 2008. Sen. Biden attended Archmere from 1957 through 1961. As a student, he played football and basketball; served as president of his class junior and senior years; and was a member of the varsity Club, whose purpose was to promote school spirit. As an alumnus, he maintained strong ties with Archmere and was an active member of the community. He was elected to his first of six Senate terms in 1972. In February 1973, he arranged to bring astronauts from Apollo XVII to speak at Archmere."

Asthma, huh?

Your point is well taken about asthma during combat, my son is currently serving, asthma suffer, under control with medication.
But, the question I have is this:
He got the deferments first, asthma was not an issue, until later...
LATER, after the deferments.
That makes a difference, in my opinion.
Plus, they say he played both Football & Basketball.
Don't you think, if it had been a real, and ongoing issue, that would have been the first choice for not serving?
I know it would have been mine.
Just common sense.

Marlowe wrote on Sep 9, 2008 9:31 AM:I will repeat something that I think is very important in this election. Both McCain and Obama campaigned for about 18 months for their party's nod. This involved dozens of appearances in all kinds of settings and venues. They talked to the American people by the tens or hundreds of thousands in person, and by the millions on mass media. They went head to head in numerous debates. They had every move and word and associate of their lifetimes examined in detail by the press and the people. They were attacked mercilessly for reasonable and unreasonable things. And after this grueling process, McCain and Obama won their parties' nomination. Millions of Republicans and Democrats voiced their opinions and McCain and Obama were the winners. We've heard both speak about every issue before the nation, many times. And we decided on them. Now if anyone wants to compare this to the process that gave us Sarah Palin, I welcome the effort, but who would offer such a foolish thing? Hey, Palin might be great, but none of us know, really, a thing about her. This is why we have to trump up "important facts" about her, that she was CiC of the Alaska Guard, served on an energy board, etc. We have a minute resume and no experience with her. At least Biden is a well known entity and a veteran himself of long, national campaigns. What is Palin? "A strong woman" Uh, ok, that's true, and this means...what? The feeble efforts to compare the "mayor" with the "community organizer" miss the point. Obama has been out there, competing on the national stage, for a couple of years. Palin? Nada. MAMA likes the sound of it (12:28 AM). That’s GOOD! I mean REAL GOOD!! Sounds like the name of a book -- or an opera. That’s it! An opera about the ‘Queen of the North’, folk heroine from Wasilla. Cast of thousands like Cecil B. DeMille.
Thank you, blogger for ‘Queen of the North’.

We can recreate all those great old epic movies by Cecil, with the new super heroine from Wasilla. Unlimited possibilities.
We can start with ‘The Greatest Show on Earth’, about the GOP convention in Saint Paul, followed by War of the Worlds, about Palin’s campaign to conquer Earth.

When Worlds Collide will depict the rebel voices of reason and science pitted against the forces of Pallin’s creationism and blind faith.

Sampson & Delilah, the story of old warrior McCain bringing down the evil temple of Congress, crushing all the GOP evil doers inside. Change is coming.

You may not remember DeMille’s ‘Story of the Doctor from Wasilla’, but you surely must remember Reap the Wild Wind, in which Sarah goes out across the heartland preaching Abstinence Only.

And, Oh, Lordy. There’s McCain as ‘The Buccaneer’ and Palin as the ‘Plainswoman’. Such drama! Such folklore. Such heroes.

And McBomb is starred in that great tale ‘The Crusades’, in which he launches a nuke attack against Iran and those nasty Arabs. Actually, the script writer got it wrong. The Iranians are Persians, not Arabs, but it don’t matter if you get the facts wrong, just so you McBomb lobs the big one, after which Palin celebrates by acting in the new DeMille’s production of ‘Her Man of War.’

And don’t forget ‘Cleopatra’, starring the buxomy Palin seducing that great American war hero from Arid Zona. Great tragic-comedy tale in which the serpent seals her fate.

And Palin can star in a recasting of that little know DeMille movie ‘Madam Satan’, turning it into a box office success this time. What a dark tour de force.

And let’s see the new production of ‘The Godless Girl’; and ‘The Road to Yesterday’, in which McPalin reverts America to the yesteryears of the dark ages.

Yes sir-e-e-e, my fellow Merkins. A Star has been Born in the North. And MAMA wouldn’t miss this for nothing!

OBAMA MAMA wrote on Sep 9, 2008 11:00 AM:Bravo, Marlowe (9:31 AM)

First off, I like your handle, "MARLOWE".

Mainly because of Philip Marlowe, who was a fictional character created by Raymond Chandler in a series of entertaining novels, including The Big Sleep and The Long Goodbye. Philip Marlowe's was a hardboiled fictional crime fighter back in the 1920s. Doubtless Chandler would write about the hardboiled crime of the McPalin age if he were living today. Underneath the wisecracking, hard drinking, tough private eye, Marlowe was quietly contemplative and philosophical. He enjoyed chess and poetry. While he was not afraid to risk physical harm, he did not dish out violence merely to settle scores. Morally upright, he was not bamboozled by the genre's usual femme fatale, such as Sarah Palin.
MAMA loved Philip MARLOWE.

Well, I digressed. Now to my point -- actually to YOUR point: VETTING. Enjoyed your post at 9:31 AM about VETTING.

The Republicans thought they were gonna pull a fast one, a Dubya trick, and trot out an unknown (like Dubya was), hoist up this cute little firecracker petard Palin, make all the Grand ‘Ol deluded Party bow down without know what she was made of.

Now the whole world is playing fast time catch-up with Palin, and the petard is about to pop like a firecracker. Never blow up a balloon too fast. It is sure to pop.

MAMA got just one thing to add: McKeating himself has never been vetted. Everybody seems to just take the crooked ol’ man’s word about his story. Nobody is researching his dark past. It is veerry long and has some veerry dark chapters. It goes even earlier than McSongbird’s time as a prisoner of war. It goes back to his wanton, wasted youth. But America has a short memory. Nobody remembers the lessons of Vietnam. Nobody remembers the McKeating Five of Arizona and the real estate scandals. It reached right into the herart of San Diego real estate, too. Heck, nobody even talks about the bankruptcy of Silver State bank which happened just last week.

But MAMA remembers all stuff, old and new. MAMA don’t forget. First and foremost we need to vet McCAIN.

I do not care one iota if you "accept" gay marriage. That is entirely your business. I don't care one iota if you think homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God. You have a perfect right to these beliefs. You have the right to pray that God will straighten gays out. You have a right to talk to homosexuals and offer them your wishes and opinions. But when you get to the law of the land, your beliefs cannot be imposed on others. It's a very simple concept, isn't it? Why is live and let live so tough for you to get?
