VISTA: Doctor arrested after raid uncovers drugs, guns

VISTA ---- A doctor alleged to have issued prescriptions for highly addictive medications to patients with no evidence of needing them was arrested Wednesday after a raid, announced Eileen Zeidler of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
Dr. Jeffrey Yusim, 50, was arrested after federal agents from multiple agencies uncovered loaded guns, a vast supply of medications, marijuana and cash in raids of his residence and office at Quality Care Medical Center, 840 Townsite Drive. His home address wasn't released, but the Web site www.switchboard.com lists him in the 1300 block of Sugarbrush Drive.
During a nine-month probe, Yusim "routinely" issued bogus prescriptions to undercover agents who posed as patients but did not present legitimate medical criteria to receive the drugs, Zeidler alleged. The DEA was assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, plus the Medical Board of California and the county district attorney's office, she said.
The medications he is alleged to have prescribed fraudulently included such medications as OxyContin, Vicodin, Ambien and Phenergan with codeine cough syrup, according to Zeidler.
During the searches, DEA agents seized five loaded pistols, three rifles, a variety of controlled substances, more than a half-pound of high-grade marijuana, two scales and several thousand dollars in cash, Zeidler said.

These charges are just not right. If a doctor can't prescibe what he thinks is best for his patients then what do we have? Doctors make mistakes, but for me I see Dr. Yusim as just doing his job.

I think this is just wrong. Mine and my medical records are open to anyone who thinks he is guility of this.

Yusims patient wrote on Sep 12, 2008 6:19 PM:My family have been patients of Dr. Yusim's for years. We found him to be a thorough and excellent doctor. He has always been careful what he prescribed for my family. It sounds like he was set up. I would like to know who set him up. Is there anyone else involved at Quality Care? There usually isn't just one person involved. One should question this.
annoyed wrote on Sep 12, 2008 7:28 PM:This definately looks like a setup. There is a pic of what was seized and all of the marijuana paraphanelia was brand new and unused as well as the scales, etc.... All of the pills were mixed together in a very weird manner that made no sense, and his ex partner was not happy with him when he left the practice very early this year. He is a great doctor who does not deserve this, how can they say he was prescribing to people (undercovers) that did not have valid health problems? If they posed as having had these problems, why wouldn't he prescribe the meds?
Pink wrote on Sep 12, 2008 8:24 PM:Money is a bigger and more dangerous addiction than drugs can be.
People misuse and abuse money, they let it control their lives to a point that they do illegal things to get more of it.
Whatever it takes to make a profit, it doesn't matter if it hurts or kills someone, as long as the money is made.
This system starts right at the top with our privately owned federal reserve banking system down through the ranks to the lowlife corner drug dealers that sell to your kids.
There should be education for those that are addicted to money to the point they do criminal acts against society.
FRAMED wrote on Sep 12, 2008 9:32 PM:I am appaulled. Dr. Yusim has always been a very caring, understanding doctor who did nothing but make sure he gave the Most "thorough" examination possible. He would not give me pain meds except for Ibuprofen 800mg. and that was with an ex-ray! I had pulled out my Fuset joint, and was in a severe amount of pain. He was clearly set up ... and now is being framed as a "drug-dealer!" WHAT A CROCK!My whole family goes to him and likes him very much!!!
patient wrote on Sep 13, 2008 3:12 PM:He has been treating me and my family for years. We don't want to lose him. He takes a lot of time with his examinations and he is one of the funniest doctors I have ever met. I believe he is being set up by someone.
Headache sufferer wrote on Sep 13, 2008 3:16 PM:I have chronic headaches and Yusim has sent me to get help from a neurologist and get involved with case studies being run instead of still prescribing too much medication. He sure helped me.
Ben wrote on Sep 13, 2008 7:04 PM:I question the motives of what they were after, besides the drugs and guns. Anybody can own a gun, but the drugs? Come On! He's a doctor!
Yusims patient wrote on Sep 13, 2008 7:15 PM:We will be and stay Yusim's patients as long as possible. Our family finds him to be a very caring, thorough doctor. We never found him to prescribe anything that was inappropriate. It seems like someone set him up.
Yes they can. wrote on Sep 15, 2008 5:55 AM:Yes anybody can own a gun. Yes he is a doctor. But to own any gun without proper paperwork etc is illegal. To prescribe drugs without proper paper work or Etc there is where the crime comes in. He may have been a good Dr. to you the ligitimate public but he [allegedly] was also the good Dr. to the illigitimate public. It is good you believe in the Dr. but hey some good people go bad. As Pink stated in the blog earlier "MONEY IS A BIGGER AND MORE DANGEROUS ADDICTION THAN DRUGS CAN BE." So if you think he is innocent then believe on. I will let the 12 jurors decide and if they find him guilty then justice prevails and if innocent then justice again prevailed.
Its true wrote on Sep 19, 2008 12:07 PM:I agree with "Yes they can" because I know for a fact that he prescribes bogus prescriptions. Like you said, to the ligitmate public, he was a good dr..but to the illigitimate public he was an even better dr because he gave them what they wanted. I know quite a few people that go to him specifically for that reason. What type of doctor prescribes year long prescriptions?? Come on, he's been up to this for a long time. I'm sure he's a good man with a good heart but not everybody is perfect and we all have our demons.

LAWLZ wrote on Sep 26, 2008 9:17 AM:I don't know Dr. Yusim. However, I am a medical provider and have worked with colleagues who have been known to over prescribe. This sounds like a kind-hearted physician from what I hear who just couldn't make boundaries. I think some counseling rather than an indictment would have been appropriate. I have a problem with our tax dollars being spent for small-time undercover operations when they could be spending it more on bringing down the cartels that cross our borders to bring in meth. and cocaine. The DEA can't put these people to go undercover where the real problem is? What's placing a doctor in prison for prescribing narcotics going to prove? Good job DEA this probably was a warm-up before going after the big boys, right?
