Proof that increasing taxes decreases revenue
The Sept. 6 edition of The Californian noted that the highway fund shortfall, which was delaying road projects, was the result of less tax revenue. The drop in gas tax revenue was attributed to the high price of gas. People driving less equals less gas tax money. Pretty simple concept.
Many of those in Sacramento and Washington who believe that raising our sales or income taxes will help solve our budget shortfall apparently haven't grasped this concept or noticed the similarity this has to the highway fund shortfall. The sure way to increase our highway fund coffers would be to see a lower gasoline price. In much the same way, the best way to increase tax revenue would be to lower sales and income taxes.
High taxes are just like high gasoline prices. As the price of gas gets lower, people will drive more, spending more on gas and increasing the coffers of the highway fund. In much the same way, if you lower taxes, people spend more, increasing demand for products and services, which in turn stimulates the economy and allows businesses to hire more workers. This, in turn, generates more tax revenue.
Remember this when someone tells you we need to raise taxes to pay for roads and schools. Actually, the best way to raise more money for roads and schools would be to lower sales and income taxes.

Picking Palin is McCain's worst judgment
Both campaigns are now for change. Obama has been for real meaningful change for the entire time he has been in the arena. He has championed the causes of the average American and served in not-too-glamorous areas such as the South Side of Chicago. He was raised by a single white mom and white grandparents. He has done what the Republicans preach, and pulled himself up by his bootstraps to graduate from Harvard with honor and serve his community. He expects us to pitch in and work for a better future. He has the judgment, strength and determination to lead us back to the right path.
McCain has served 26 years in Congress after five-plus years in a prison camp. He's the son and grandson of admirals. He graduated from Annapolis fifth from the bottom and became a hot-shot pilot during the Vietnam war. He's the same "Hero McCain" whom the Bush camp slimed in 2000 and accused of fathering a black illegitimate child. The Republican Party dumped him for hide-in-the-National Guard George W. Bush. His political ambition made him vote for all the Bush policies that have brought us to the present disasters. He just showed his worst judgment picking Sarah Palin just to satisfy the right wing who are the backbone of the party. Rush Limbaugh was ecstatic!
The Republican convention said nothing on their record of the last eight years with full power for six and veto power for 2. They used the Rove politics of lies and slime, and they are experts at "zingers" with expert delivery by the best, Fred (Thompson), Rudy (Giuliani) and Sarah. Who in these times does that stupid thing called "community service"? Enough is too much! Wake up, America!

Statement contradictory, not illogical
Arlene Christensen (Letters, Aug. 26) is partially correct in her critique of my statement about the value of hard interrogation (Letters, Aug. 20). My statement was contradictory, but not illogical. It was grammatically inaccurate, but anyone with an eighth-grade education would understand the point being made. Further, the more illogical statement was made by her in that she accused John McCain of solving every issue by military action instead of diplomacy. That is a gratuitous, partisan, unsubstantiated statement not worthy of a professed country-loving naval officer.

McCain's book sheds light
Regarding the letter on Aug. 22 about John McCain being tortured, I strongly suggest Wayne Blizzard read McCain's book, "Faith of My Fathers," Chapters 15 through 20. There are names in those chapters you can check out. Pay particular attention to Chapter 20. If he thinks anything like this level of cruel punishment ever occurred at Guantanamo, he has been reading entirely too many liberal blogs.

Writer's sentiments 'creepy' and 'Orwellian'
Re: Virginia Nordin's letter, Sept. 10: With no doubt, this is one of the most creepy and hateful letters that I have ever read in a newspaper. Nordin does not want Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to become vice president because the governor opted for life for her infant son who has Down syndrome. In addition, Nordin describes Palin as "too pregnant" and further condemns presidential candidate John McCain as "too old."
Presuming that Virginia Nordin intends to vote the Democrat ticket this November, I am left wondering, where exactly is the diversity that is supposedly embraced by progressives? In Nordin's world, progress and diversity center on eugenics programs reminiscent of those totalitarian regimes from the 1930s and 40s. Perhaps Nordin also prefers to see people like the Palins subjected to forced abortion policies similar to those in place in totalitarian China. Nordin's social utopia would be a less-diverse world sanitized of less-than-perfect children and sanitized of persons who are "too old" or "too pregnant." Sorry, Virginia, but I am not feeling the love, peace and tolerance from your corner. Neither you nor the "Messiah" Barack Obama are capable of judging the quality of life for anybody. Such hard-hearted sentiments are indeed creepy and simply quite Orwellian.

Pelosi wrote on Sep 16, 2008 5:09 AM:When Pelosi was asked by reporters what congress was going to do about the banking crisis she stuttered and couldn't answer the question, she then said that the cahirman of the house finance comittee, Barney Frank would fix the problem. My God we're in for trouble with leadership like hers and Barney Frank...the guy is a sick individual and needs help, how is he going to fix the problem. And when Obama joins this group of leadership get ready, the market will drop like a stone.
VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 6:43 AM:To poster Pelosi I have to ask this question. Where is your quote attributed to Mrs. Pelosi, because checking Nexus, I could only findthis from yesterday and it didn't include a stutter. "“Eight years of weakened regulation of our nation’s financial system — including a failure to regulate risky, and often predatory, lending practices — by the Bush administration and Republicans in Congress have led us to this point, and could further erode our nation’s economic health,". That may make Republicans stutter but doesn't appear Ms Pelosi did. You then said "Barney Frank is a sick individual and needs help". What is that thought bases on? Is it because he is the only admitted gay Senator? If that isn't the reason, then you clearly didn't us any real opinion as to why you feel he is sick. As to the market dropping like a stone because of Democrats, didn't that just happen yesterday? Regulations on our financial institutions have been removed over the last 8 years to enable higher corporate profits leaving the American public at risk by the Republican Bush administration. I think that Pelosi's stutter yesterday hot the nail on the head.
VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 6:50 AM:I have to ask Kenneth Ebmeier what he knows firsthand that is or did happen at Guantanamo in regards to torture? And then he doesn't show or quote any "liberal" blogs to give an example of what they say about torture at Guantanamo.
To_VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 7:09 AM:Last time I looked congress was in charge by the Democrats. Sarbenes_Oxley was major legislation passed on 2002 that does gives much oversight and more transparency in company financial statements. Pelosi is too worried about the world and pleasing her very rich friends in SF. I am not sure what you were watching yesterday but I know what I saw, as for Barney, ... out of his office while he develops his plan on fixing the financial crisis, he may not get much work done...too much distarction for the old guy. Democratic leadership is failing and it wioll get much worse and if a nuke goes off by terrorists in any city in the US, eveyting will change overnight. How much is that worth in dollars, to have seven years of no nukes on US soil. Before 911 no one cared about Afghanistan, they had there way and they still bombed us even tough we din't bother them. It will all be a parking lot once they set off a nuke here, oh wait Obama will be President, maybe he'll ask them to stop because he will say it is the USA's fault. He will do nothing, the USA will wither and die.
Taliban wrote on Sep 16, 2008 7:40 AM:The Taliban did anything they wanted to anyone they wanted before 911, no one bothered them. Then they decided, without provication of any sort from the USA, to destroy our way of life. What would O'Bama have done, set up a comission to determine why it happened, and afetr 10 months of no action and anothe rmajor attack on USA soil he would simply move to Indonesia and let the USA citizens handle the mess. Has anyone heard of the False Prophet, OBama comes about as close as it gets, get ready everyone its going to get intense. O'Bama will be elected and something more terrrrble than 911 will ahppen. The terrorists are afraid of Bush, they think he is crazy, O'Bama is one of them, a transpalnted Indonesian.
VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 7:44 AM:"When girls insist on playing hardball with the boys, they don't get to cry foul - or change
the game to dodge ball - when they get bruised. This is a line from a local Republican group.
So putting Rick Reiss's comment into context demanding tolerance for others, I have to ask how does that fit his beliefs, or is it only when the candidate represents his beliefs that he demands tolerance? Clearly credibility can be challenged in this case by Mr Reiss' post, although he does identify what the Democratic party does represent, love, peace and tolerance versus his parties proven ideology of hate, war and intolerance. Just look at the facts. Conservative talk show hosts fired and sanctioned over and over for their hateful comments towards others. Republican overwhelming support for the War in Iraq and the approval of torture including that of an American serviceman, Senator and Presidential candidate who was tortured, John McCain. And the views of all the above as to tolerance for those that want the freedoms afforded by our Constitution, the same freedoms that include being able to love freely and a women's right to chose. He falsely claimed, (is there any other way for a Republican these days except to say something that is on the opposite end of the truth), that Virginia Nordin's world is that of totalitarian regimes from the 1930s and 40s, meaning the Nazis of Germany. Then making up her feelings, (again another truthful conservative trait), he says Nordin prefers to see people like the Palins subjected to forced abortion policies as are in nations like China.
Well Rick, I don't think Nordin, nor the "Messiah", Mr Obama, would ever try to change the quality of anyone's life. That would not be consistent with the Democratic theme of love, peace and tolerance would it. That would be the direction that comes from the mouths of the other party. Yes, you're right, truthful hard hearted sentiments are pretty creepy aren't they?
VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 7:57 AM:The post stated that Ms Pelosi stuttered and no answer for the banking crisis and that Senator Frank was "sick" and needed help. As America sees it, the Congress is one split down the middle although the slight one vote advantage does allow the Congress to be run by Democrats because of the wons in 2006 after Republican corruption scandals and failures led to their ouster after 12 years of Republican dominance. Sarbanes Oxley is a reporting structure for corporations, not a restriction on loans and borrowing, so the example you give means nothing.
Democratic leadership can only do so much but thats about to change in the next few months when America decides. But the post goes into the SAME conservative fear tactics. Talk about Republican financial failures and their response is-- "be afraid, be afraid" their going to nuke us. In the last election Americans rejected that fear, remember we are the home of the brave. With borders wide open anyone could walk in and do as they please, Republicans did nothing to improve our protection and the War in Iraq was NOT against terrorists that were responsible for 9-11, they are still running loose. The poster then goes off on a wild statement. Afganistan bombed us?? Well, you can see that this poster has been watching too much Fox News. What a patriot saying America, no matter who is President will wither and die. Americans, the home of the brave, will never allow such a thing to happen.
VOR wrote on Sep 16, 2008 8:25 AM:Taliban is a perfect example of voters that support the conservative ideology. Well spoken, accurate sentiments driven by love for fellow humans. Unbelievable. No friend, the Taliban did not attack us, but they shielded the terrorist group Al Queada in Afganistan. They were not attempting to destroy our way of life by blowing up two buildings, but to disrupt it and more importantly to them, cause a massive rift between Muslims and Christians. Even though Sarah Palin has tried, unsuccessfully again to link Iraq with Al Queada in a speech to troops leaving for Iraq the other day, you can see that the attacks did stir up the hatred that they wanted. As we all know even the wild-eyed Bush Adminisration has admitted there was no link, but don't tell Christian zealots like Palin, they would have nothing else to use when giving hate/fear speeches for inspiration. Obama is a False Prophet??? For who??? And you state then that this country, because one man becomes President will "allow" something worse to happen. How patriotic of you to think America is not stronger then one or two men or women. Terrorists are not afraid, they sacrifice themselves every day. America is the one afraid of Bush, even his own party at the Republican convention wouldnt utter his name. Now thats fear.
Enough of Bush Politics wrote on Sep 16, 2008 8:50 AM:For those pretending that McCain-Palin will bail us out of our problems they obviously want us to forget the failed 8 years of the Bush administration. The Repulicans have made it crystal clear over that 8 year period they are failed leaders. McCain is Bush warmed over. If you haven't, watch Bush's speech at the 2004 Republican convention and the speech of McCain in this year's Republican Convention. Close your eyes and you can't tell the difference. The only difference Palin brings are more extreme views (and intolerance) on social issues. Get rid of their self proclaimed (and dishonest) "maverick" label and lip stick jokes and they are George Bush at an older age and in a dress. If Americans makes the same ridiculous presidental election decision they made 4 years ago the United States will be the laughing stock of the world.
to Enough wrote on Sep 16, 2008 10:15 AM:How right you are. Reform? Change? Waht possibly can McCain/Palin be talking about? This has been 8 years of their ideology, their purpose and their direction running this country. Does anyone think that they will gut the administration? Replace these current Republicans with who? More of the same. Karl Rove left Bush and where did he run to? Into the waiting arms of thw McCain campaign. One Republican means the same Republicans. So I too don't understand the cries for change and reform when it will be the same people in the same jobs bringing us the same failures and corruption. The biggest question we should all be asking is this: Are McBush and Palin the best the Republican party have to offer? Oh my gosh how truly sad to think that everything else underneath is less qualified.
John the Baptist wrote on Sep 16, 2008 3:28 PM:It's interesting to see how selective the Republicans are in taking credit. The post
"to VOR" @ 7:09 AM asks: "How much is that worth in dollars, to have seven years of no nukes on US soil?" -- the Bush administration taking credit for that. But they don't want to take "credit" for the economic mess they've created. It's going to take some creative thinking and action to clean it up. Obama has shown both in running his campaign. The only creativity McCain has shown has been in coming up with excuses for why he managed to crash five military aircraft.
Taliban wrote on Sep 16, 2008 4:16 PM:McCain will not get re-elected the false prohet will, the stage is being set before our very eyes. Yes the Taliban and Afghan gov't were seperate and the same, I remeber members of the Afghan gov't saying minutes after the attack they had nothing to do woth it...yeah right and I was born yesterday. Even so it is an absolute mess over there and in much of the world do to overpopulation and scarce resources because of it. 2/3rd's of the world will never escape poverty..plain and simple. O'Bama ill shift rsources from the US to the thrid world, especially his country, Indonesia..after all he is very very attached to that place. He'll tilit his head, extend his arms in a consoling gesture as the USA goes on an equal playig field with the thrid world. Soon we'll all look for something to eat all day..nothing ealse...false hopes from the false prohet who will set the stage...it will happen, I'll be dead by then but it will happen.
Richard wrote on Sep 16, 2008 9:01 PM:Obama is running to help keep this country intact, not to help destroy it. He is not going to be able to do all the things he has announced he would like to do and he knows that but felt it important to put out goals to head toward. He's for example not going to raise taxes on Americans who don't have lavish incomes. He mainly plans to block tax loopholes which basically is preventing tax evasion and I think that's fine. If he considers the McCain idea to stop donating billions to foreign countries then that would be a huge help also. But make no mistake about it, Obama is not a saviour. There is no possible way to reverse what Bush has already done, such as invading a country that never attacked us and remaining involved in their internal civil warring still to this date, spending 700 billion to find nonexistent WMD's while letting Bin laden regroup. These losses are irreversible and no one, Obama, no one, can reverse time and go back and undo any of that. The onbly hope he has is to try to stop the bleeding, which apparently McCain/Pailin still actually believe was somehow noble and will require continual financial and personell support indefinitely to force democracy on a foreign country. It's never worked before and cannot work now, in fact the Maliki Shia government is already reversing course and blocking Anbar Sunnis that actually fought Al Qaeda from incorporating with them. It's not a pretty picture and Obama understands the conditions on the ground far better than these two, hands down.
Again, Obama is an American and is Constitutionally qualified to run for the White House. He may not get there, he may, but he has every right to have a chance to do what he thinks is right for this country.
Enough of Bush Politics wrote on Sep 17, 2008 7:43 AM:To Taliban: Don't you fear Palin giving all the American wealth to the Eskimos, after all her husband is very attached to those people? As for false prophets look no further than George Bush, the guy who promised great things before running this country into the ground? I hope you are right that Obama wins, and I hope you live long enough to remember what's it like to have a President that can inspire people, as opposed to filling them with fear and hatred of one another.
