New York Jets

Kickoff: 5:30 p.m. Monday at Qualcomm Stadium.

Series: Chargers leads 18-11-1. The Chargers won the last meeting, 31-26, on Nov. 5, 2005 in East Rutherford, N.J. In the last meeting in San Diego, the Jets defeated the Chargers 20-17 in overtime in an AFC Wild Card playoff game on Jan. 8, 2005.

Player to watch: QB Brett Favre

Look who's trotting out for his 256th consecutive start ---- the legendary former Green Bay Packers quarterback who retired after last season. Bad timing for the Chargers in that Favre is 5-0 lifetime against them, including a big-time performance last season in which he passed for 369 yards and three scores. Favre, who holds the NFL record with 445 career touchdown passes, has thrown for three TDs in two games for the Jets while connecting on 68.8 percent of his passes. The career numbers are dizzying ---- the list includes 62,030 career passing yards, 55 300-yard passing games, 40 fourth-quarter, game-winning comebacks. The 38-year-old Favre is a three-time NFL MVP but the Jets are hoping he will add on to his playoff success ---- he's thrown a touchdown pass in an NFL-record 18 consecutive postseason games and his 5,311 postseason yards are second behind Hall of Famer Joe Montana (5,772).

Offense

RB Thomas Jones was viewed as a disappointment after his fourth NFL season in 2003 before resurrecting his career with the Chicago Bears. Jones had 1,119 rushing yards (10th best in the NFL) last season in his first year with the Jets and is off to a good start (171 through two games) in hopes of notching his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard rushing season. WRs Laveranues Coles and Jerricho Cotchery are a top-notch duo. Coles is sixth in franchise history with 389 career receptions and Cotchery has caught 82 passes in each of the past two seasons. Coles has topped 1,000 yards three times in his career; Cotchery did it last season for the first time with 1,130 yards. The Jets feature four former first-round picks on their offensive line, including prized free-agent acquisition Alan Faneca, a seven-time Pro Bowl guard with Pittsburgh.

Defense

The Jets have been difficult to run against (allowing just 3.1 yards per rush and 76.5 yards per game) in the first two games and the biggest reason has been the arrival of three-time Pro Bowl nose tackle Kris Jenkins. He already has four tackles for losses and a sack. DE Shaun Ellis, in his ninth season, has been with the Jets longer than any current player. He has 54 1/2 career sacks, fourth most in franchise history. ILB David Harris emerged as a big-time force last season as a rookie, leading the team with 117 tackles. He has a team-best 19 stops after two games this season. OLB Bryan Thomas is tied for the AFC lead with three sacks. Few safeties can blitz and cover as well as fourth-year player Kerry Rhodes, who has been responsible for 11 turnovers (nine interceptions, two fumbles) over the last two seasons and has more sacks (seven) than any other NFL defensive back in that span. The Jets are starting two young corners ---- second-year man Darrelle Revis (three interceptions last season, one this season) and rookie Dwight Lowery, who intercepted 13 passes in just two seasons at San Jose State.

Noteworthy

Leon Washington is one of the top returners in the NFL. He became the 12th player in NFL history to return at least three kickoffs for touchdowns in a season in 2007 while averaging 27.5 yards per return. … The Jets have a lot of interesting coaching names, including offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer (a former Chargers assistant and son of former Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer), offensive line coach Bill Callahan (coached Oakland to the Super Bowl six seasons ago), defensive line coach Brian Cox (the controversial player who was one of the top linebackers in the 1990) and special assistant Teddy Atlas (the former trainer of boxer Mike Tyson). … K Jay Feely (1-of-2 on field goals) was released by Miami even though he connected on 21-of-23 field goals in 2007. … Cotchery was Chargers QB Philip Rivers' main target at North Carolina State. Coincidentally, Jets receivers coach Noel Mazzone was NC State's offensive coordinator for part of their careers. ... P Ben Graham was waived Tuesday after averaging just 27.3 net yards in 19-10 loss to the Patriots.

Next week Bret Farve will pick apart that piece crap of a over rated D-backs. Not to mention the rest of the "d". A J.E.T is going to do a 3 point landing Rivers legs. And that sissy lt will still be makeing is T.V is main job. Final Scrore on MNF ---->>> J.E.T.S 38-17 CHOKERS 0-3.

BoltBacker wrote on Sep 17, 2008 12:16 AM:I don't see the Jets as being much better with Favre behind center. Funny how the Jets seemingly became contenders once uno cuatro came aboard. Yes, there is an east coast bias especially where the Big (Cr)Apple is concerned.

Raidermann, it's apparent you dislike the Chargers very much and so be it. Just make sense when you air your opinions. You made no sense. What was in your Fruit Loops besides milk and bananas?

The Raiders' days of Commitment to Excellence and Pride and Poise are just like the Chargers 1963 AFL Championship, HISOTRY...you know as in a thing of the past.

Know this too, Al Davis was an offensive ends coach on the first Chargers' teams (1960-62). So the Raiders owe their existence and success in a way to the Chargers...lol

As for the Raiders' season...good luck with that. Go Bolts!

Toilet Duck wrote on Sep 17, 2008 2:41 AM:The Jet offensive line matches up quite well with the Charger front so I expect a heavy does of Thomas Jones early.

The Bolts have struggled to stuff the run inside so this would set up the play action pass for Favre.

SD has struggled to run this year and NY is no slouch and stuffs the run well.

This puts it on Rivers when Favre has a rushing game and he doesnt.

Jets 38
Chargers 27

0-3 isnt good Charger fans!

RAIDERMANN wrote on Sep 17, 2008 8:30 AM:David, it's called New Castle and Jager' was @ a boring Chokers party, My friends are Choker fans and planned this party before the loss in Denver. Sorry . But if you read between the lines will find that the Super Chokers still will 0-3 after Monday. Al Davis left a curse in S.D. They call it "It's called NO RINGS curse.

usanaman wrote on Sep 17, 2008 8:57 AM:this could be a very ugly season. there is no light for the defense with cotrell as DC. The players play like he is a fool and he is. He should go back to the nfl offices in ny and be the lackie like he was before . AJ has got to see that this team he has bulit is not as good as he thought and needs to make some moves before it is too late. these are the things that need to be done (a) fire cotrell (b) pup jamal williams and trade for a nose tackle (c) let smith and wilhelm (sp) go because neither one has speed or strength to stop anyone else. (d) resign merriman bury the ax and get it done (e) fire n.turner because he isn't getting it done, to much babying of this team and not being in control. We will be lucky to have a team here when all is said done!!!!!!

You seem like a very angry person who hates the world, but in reality the person you seem to hate most is yourself. The Chargers will regroup and come back stronger just like they did last year.

DanH wrote on Sep 17, 2008 10:19 AM:No 'D'...no 'W.' Get it straightened out, Teddy C.

Toilet Duck wrote on Sep 17, 2008 12:31 PM:They had a coaching transition last year and thats why they got off to a slow start.

This year they just have problems.

This is Norvs team now.

RaiderBaiter wrote on Sep 17, 2008 10:42 PM:Hey RAIDERMANN, I believe that your lack of education must be behind the reason for your anger. My daughter can spell better than you and she's only six. You probably could'nt land that higher paying gig at Walmart and had to go crawling back to Jack in the Box to get your janitor job back :)

Don wrote on Sep 19, 2008 6:27 PM:This is a silly debate. The only chance the Jets had in SD for this game went out the window with SD's 0-2 start. Now the team is hyper-focused on this game. Sure, SD's defense will give up yards and points but will also likely pick Brett twice (he's overdue to show off why he is the career leader in interceptions). The Charger running game won't get off the ground unless Sproles gets a few touches as RB, he's too difficult for any defense to deal w/ in the open field. Rivers will eat the young Jet corners alive unless there's a solid pass rush all game long. Chambers and Jackson each get 100 yards, Rivers +300 (Favre too). Jets RB Jones simply isn't any good. Whatever he gets in the running game, anyone could get. He might get a hundred plus but anyone else would get 50 more than that. I watched him tap dance in Chicago far too long, even if he was mentally more capable than Ced Benson. Still, Jets got a bad break catchinig a Charger team hungry and mad. Jets, just prep for week 4 and yeah, the Broncos got yer playoff spot!

Toilet Duck wrote on Sep 19, 2008 11:42 PM:All the stuff that was said last week before the Denver game.

Reality wrote on Sep 20, 2008 9:10 AM:Don, the Jets dont have a chance because a banged up LT, no Merriman, and bad coaching on Norv Turner and Ted Cottrel's lack of gameplanning and blitz creativity have the Chargers at 0-2? Thats why the Jets dont stand a chance? Rivers will eat their young corners? Darelle Revis is a shutdown corner. He shutdown TO last yr as a rookie, Randy Moss 2 catches 22 yards last week. I dont worry about him being able to cover Chambers, especially with Kerry Rhodes at Safety behind him. If Rivers has a chance of anything it will be throwing to Gates over the middle of the field. Or trying to attack Dwight Lowrey because he gives up 4 inches and 30 lbs to Vincent Jackson. One thing you forgot though, is that your backup center will be facing Kris Jenkins whos coming off a 6 tackle 1 sack game at NT against NE's offensive line. Your OL will be tested if the Jets blitz, without question. If the jets Open the playbook on offense, this game is a coin toss. But that has yet to be seen
