Starbucks does breakfast: Starbucks is fighting back against fast-food competitors (who are now offering gourmet coffees) with a six-product line of healthy breakfast items, introduced at stores this month. The Hearty Start ($2.45) is a 140-calorie bowl of hot oatmeal with optional dried fruit, mixed nuts and brown sugar toppings. The 330-calorie Power Protein Plate ($4.95) has a hard-boiled egg, whole-wheat bagel and snack pack of peanut butter, cheese, apples and grapes. The Quick Start is a 280-calorie Berry Stella, a whole-grain fruit pastry ($1.75). There's also the 330-calorie apple bran muffin ($1.75); the Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar, a 250-calorie bar of oats, dried fruit, nuts, seeds and honey; and the Morning Bite, a 280-calorie multigrain roll with optional almond butter or strawberry jam ($1.60). Starbucks has also introduced a healthy breakfast smoothie, the Vivanno Nourishing Blend ($4), available in orange-mango-banana and banana chocolate. Made with whey protein, fresh bananas, skim milk and ice, they're 270 calories each.
Charged up on chocolate: Just in time for football season, See's Candies is offering a box of candy emblazoned with the logo of the San Diego Chargers football team. The 1-pound, gold-foil Chargers Keepsake Box includes a 1-pound assortment of dark and milk chocolates priced at $17.20. For locations, visit www.sees.com.
Cookie decor: Betty Crocker has introduced Decorating Cookie Icing, ready-to-use colored icing sold in easy-to-use pouches. The icing sets within four minutes of application and hardens within four hours. The icing comes in red, green, blue and white and costs $2.99 for a 7-ounce pouch.
DQ goes bananas this month: Dairy Queen's Blizzard flavor of the month for September is Banana Cream Pie. Made with fresh banana slices, pie crust crumbs, banana cream pie mix and whipped cream, the Blizzard mixed ice cream treats are $2.75 for a 12-ounce, $3.20 for a 16-ounce and $3.65 for a 21-ounce Blizzard.
