Poway Rodeo Days on tap

POWAY ---- The 36th annual Poway Rodeo Days will kick off with a barbecue and casino night Sept. 20 and a trail ride/poker run Sept. 21 at the Poway Valley Riders Association arena, 14336 Tierra Bonita Road.

The celebration will continue with Rodeo performances Sept. 26-28 at the arena. This year's theme is "Rodeo ... America's Original Extreme Sport!" Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 and 27, with gates opening at 6 p.m. Performances on Sept. 28 will start at 2:30; gates open at 1 p.m. Admission prices range from $12-$35.

Fans can kick up their heels for free at Rodeo Dances for ages 21 and older following the Sept. 26 and 27 performances. The dances will feature live music by The Honky Tonk Kings.

Proceeds from Poway Rodeo Days will benefit the Breast Cancer Boutique at Pomerado Hospital, the Future Farmers of America program and agricultural studies at Poway High School and equestrian therapy for those with disabilities.

School board candidate to hold meetings

RAMONA ---- In order to hear and better understand the concerns of the constituency of the Ramona Unified School District, school board candidate Joe Thelin has scheduled a series of public meetings on Fridays in the Community Room at the Ramona Library, 1406 Montecito Road.

The meetings will be from 5-7 p.m. Sept. 19 and Oct. 3, 17 and 31. Voter registration cards and online checks of registration status will also be available.

Garden club to hold plant sale

VALLEY CENTER ---- The Dos Valles Garden Club will hold a plant sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 20 at Martin Gang Ranch, 28933 Cole Valley Road. The sale will include a wide variety of indoor and outdoor plants at discount prices. Choose from palms, roses, succulents, annuals and perennials. Experts will be on hand to answer questions.

SPHS Dance Teams plan sale

ESCONDIDO ---- The San Pasqual High School Dance Teams will hold their annual rummage sale from 7 a.m.-noon Sept. 20 in the high school parking lot at Bear Valley Parkway and San Pasqual Road. Clothing, furniture, toys and many other items will be available for sale. Proceeds will benefit the SPHS dance teams.

One-stroke painting classes offered

ESCONDIDO ---- Classes in Donna Dewberry's one-stroke style of painting will be offered through the Escondido Recreation Department from 10-12:30 p.m. Sept. 20 and 27. Learn basic techniques for this style of decorative painting, which can be used on a variety of surfaces. Designs featured are poppies on Sept. 20 and mums on Sept. 27. Cost is $25 per class. Store to hold breast cancer fundraiser

ESCONDIDO ---- Coldwater Creek, a clothing store for women, will host the fall segment of its semi-annual nationwide "Try It On for the Cure" initiative from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 21.

Women can stop by the Escondido Coldwater Creek at Westfield North County mall and try on clothes to join in the fight against breast cancer. No purchase necessary. For every woman who tries on any apparel from Coldwater Creek's extensive collection, the store will donate $1 to the San Diego affiliate of Komen for the Cure. For those who choose to make an in-store purchase during the one-day fundraiser, the retailer will donate 10 percent of the day's sales to the San Diego affiliate of Komen for the Cure.

CSUSM Arts & Lecture Series continues

MOPS group forming in RB

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Church at Rancho Bernardo has formed a Mothers of Preschoolers group. Meetings will from 9:30-11:30 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays beginning Sept. 23 at The Church at Rancho Bernardo, 11740 Bernardo Plaza Court. Child care will be available.

MOPS aims to encourage mothers of preschoolers to realize their potential. Meetings will include intimate discussions in a safe small-group atmosphere, practical and life applicable teachings, and creative activities.

Pauma Valley 4-H invites new members

PAUMA VALLEY ---- The Pauma  Valley 4-H Club will hold registration from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 23 in the Multipurpose Room at Pauma Valley Elementary School, 33158 Cole Grade Road.

Youths ages 5 to 19 are invited to join the club and learn about raising animals, arts and crafts, stitching, leather crafts and other projects. Adults with skills and knowledge of a new or established project are invited to serve as volunteer leaders. General meetings are held once a month at the school; individual project meetings vary.

Cooking class offered at senior center

Learn about coyotes at family program

ESCONDIDO ---- A family program about coyotes will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. The program will address some simple solutions to encourage coyotes to live in the wild where they belong. Participants can meet "Mrs. Coyote." Refreshments and a sing-along will follow.

Local artist to teach watercolor classes

NORTH COUNTY ---- Local watercolor artist Tom Tiedeman will teach watercolor classes at various locations this fall. Classes are open all levels. Participants will paint a new watercolor in each class. The schedule:

ESCONDIDO ---- The Joslyn Senior Center Travel Service is taking reservations for an Oct. 18 day trip to the Oktoberfest celebration in Big Bear. Intergenerational Games set for Oct. 29

SAN MARCOS ---- The first North County Intergenerational Games will take place from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 29 at Walnut Grove Park, between the San Marcos Senior Center and Twin Oaks Elementary School.

The goal of the Intergenerational Games is to bring young and old together to encourage teamwork, mutual understanding and respect through activities that promote a healthier community. Teams of one student and one active older adult are partnered for the entire event. After opening ceremonies, teams will take part in races, soccer, nutrition and health trivia events. The games will culminate in lunch for participants and a medal ceremony.

Concert band invites new members

SAN MARCOS ---- Palomar College's Concert Band, which has been providing opportunities for musicians of all ages and music for the North County public for more than 25 years, is beginning another new season. Musicians who play brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments are invited to join.
