Oceanside seniors claim second win at cribbage
OCEANSIDE ---- At the August monthly Senior Challenge Cribbage Match, the Oceanside Senior Center team defeated the Fallbrook team by three game points. Oceanside had 74 wins and six skunks to Fallbrook's 73 wins and 5 skunks. In the July match, the teams each had the same number of wins (74 and 73), but Fallbrook had 11 skunks to Oceanside's seven skunks for a two-game point win.
The individual honors in the four-player match went to Oceanside pegger Marty Hess with six wins and a skunk. Following him with five wins (without a skunk) were Bob Herzog, Roy Cook, Ethel Williams, Cheryl Selvaggio and Marge Schultz.
Rob Herziger of the winning Oceanside team won the $25 gift card donated by the WalMart at College Boulevard and Highway 76 in Oceanside.
The monthly matches are held at the Vista Elks Lodge, 1947 E. Vista Way, (760) 724-1968) beginning at 12:30 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of the month. This month's match will be Sept. 25.

David Cannon, coastal engineer and project manager for the Buena Vista Lagoon Restoration Project, will discuss the need for restoration, the possible course that restoration might take and the importance of a management plan for the entire watershed. Applied business ethics topic of conference
OCEANSIDE ---- Prominent speakers and business leaders will come together for the 2008 MiraCosta College Business Leadership Conference: Applied Business Ethics. The conference will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 26 at the MiraCosta Theatre, 1 Barnard Drive. All proceeds will support student scholarships, textbook loan programs and other programs to help MiraCosta students succeed.
Organized to support the local business community and regional economic development, the conference offers continuing education credit from the California Bar Association, Society for Human Resources management, California Board of Accountancy and the Institute of Supply Management. Big-band bash upcoming
OCEANSIDE ---- The 12th annual Big Band Bash By the Beach will be from noon-4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the Oceanside Pier Amphitheatre. Senior Volunteer Patrol to hold orientation
OCEANSIDE ---- Oceanside's Senior Volunteer Police Patrol will hold an orientation for prospective volunteers at 3 p.m. Oct. 1 in the Community Room of the Mission Branch Library, 3861-B Mission Ave. Those who are chosen for the program will meet from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 6-18. Upon graduation, each volunteer will be partnered with another senior to patrol various sectors within the city. Cars and uniforms are furnished. Preschool sports offered
VISTA ---- The city of Vista is offering Preschool Sports to boys and girls ages 3-5 now through Oct. 8 and Oct. 13-Nov. 6. The program is designed to introduce youngsters to sports, movement and coordination in a safe, fun and positive leaning environment. Camps meet from 10-11 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Cost is $48 residents; $58 nonresidents. Space is limited to 20 children; all children receive a team jersey.

VISTA ---- Tickets go on sale Sept. 15 for VFW Post 7041's annual Steak and Lobster Dinner, prepared and served by the Military Order of the Cooties of the post. Youths can help decorate library
VISTA ---- Scout troops and youth groups are invited to bring ornaments and decorations that they have made to the Vista Library to help decorate for the December holidays. These can be hanging crafts for windows or crafts for tabletops. The library wants this community service project to reflect diverse countries, cultures and holidays. Creek, lagoon tour set
CARLSBAD ---- The Buena Vista Audubon Society and Preserve Calavera will hold a Buena Vista Creek and Lagoon Discovery Tour from 8-11 a.m. Sept. 27. Participants should meet at Starbucks in the Quarry Creek Shopping Center at College and Lake avenues off Highway 78. Participants will carpool to the various locations.
Highlights of the tour will be the new Buena Vista Creek Ecological Reserve and waterfall, birding in the vicinity of last year's sewage spill on the lagoon and the weir at the mouth of the lagoon. Tour leaders are Diane Nygaard and Andy Mauro. Call (760) 753-1266.
Library to host Monday genealogy classes

Library to host ‘Fourth Tuesday’ teen workshops
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad City Library will continue its series of free workshops designed to teach teens real-world skills (finances, research, how to get into college and job hunting) with "Research Tips" at 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at Carlsbad City Library's Computer Lab, 1775 Dove Lane. Participants will learn how to better use electronic databases and the library catalog as well as Internet searching tips.
Other workshops will include:
-- Oct. 28, 7-8 p.m., "Get Into the College You Want." The workshop gives a brief introduction to some SAT testing strategies, financial aid and how to apply to get into a college of choice.
-- Nov. 25, 7-8 p.m. "Get a Job." Tips on how to write a resume, craft a cover letter, and how to prepare for the job interview.

Genealogy group to meet Sept. 23

‘Moonlight’ fundraiser set for Del Mar Ballroom
ENCINITAS ---- Community Resource Center will present its 2008 Community Star Award to Peder Norby during its gala fundraiser, "Moonlight on the Promenade," from 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Del Mar Fairgrounds Mission Tower Ballroom. The center is the primary provider of comprehensive social services in the North County Coastal region of programs that shelter abused women and children, assist low-income families and individuals, and help the homeless transition off the streets.
