Seniors gather for ballroom dance

Reception to benefit scholarships

OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation will hold a Gala Scholarship Reception at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Oceanside museum of Art School of Art, 219 N. Coast Highway. A program with tributes to Rich Langen, Don and Dave Megill and Eliane Weidauer will follow at 7 p.m. at the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 N. Coast Highway. Preview entertainment of the 7th annual Oceanside Musical Festival, OMFest, will be provided. Cost is $65 per person, $125 per couple. All profits go to music scholarships for high school students. Personal Finance Management is topic

OCEANSIDE ---- MiraCosta College's Community Services Program will hold the Personal Finance Management Workshop from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 2-16 in Room 3601 at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. An optional fourth session is available to review personal financial situations. Cost is $59; spouses attend free. Class will provide students with the basic information about the fundamentals of sound financial planning that can lead to financial independence. Author to speak on 100 classic hikes

Riedel will discuss useful tips on the best trails in the region, little-known camping spots, beautiful views, great family hikes and more. VFW Post open for meals

VISTA ---- Vista VFW Post 7041 is open to the public for special meals four times a week at 1717 E. Vista Way. The special dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 is prime rib, veggies and salad for $9. Regular menu items also are available. Special dinners for the week are:

Apply for Social Security at senior center

VISTA ---- Anyone who is within three months of age 62 or older and who plans on retiring can come to a free workshop where Social Security employees will be on hand to assist with filing for benefits online. Local instructor to lead art workshops

Families of gays to meet Sept. 28

CARLSBAD ----Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, a parents-led

support and information organization, will meet at 2 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Pilgrim UCC Church, 2020 Chestnut Ave. PFLAG is open to all those wishing to discuss gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender issues, particularly when family relationships are disrupted. Family members as well as GLBT people are invited to join discussions of mutual support. 101 Artists' Colony holds concert

Center to offer 'Gentle Pilates'

New theater to debut tonight

ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Library Community Theatre will debut this evening with two one-act comedies on the British mystery genre by Tony Award-winning author Tom Stoppard, “The Real Inspector Hound” and “After Magritte,” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in the Encinitas Library Community Room, 540 Cornish Drive. Help celebrate the 'Future of Surfing'

SOLANA BEACH ---- Rerip.com and Homeblown US, along with the city of Solana Beach, will host the second annual "Future of Surfing" event from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Sept. 27 at Fletcher Cove Park. Musicians, local artists, vendors, and environmentally minded organizations, including The Surfrider Foundation, EcoBuilt Craig Hollingsworth, Wavetribe, and the Waveriders Gallery, will be working to raise environmental awareness and sustainability in surfboard construction. The first 50 participants who donate a used and rideable surfboard will receive a free soy-based Biofoam surfboard blank. Donated boards will be painted by renowned local surf artist Wade Koniakowsky and then resold at the event, with proceeds benefiting the Solana Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. With Ecobuilt, Rerip.com will host a Board Recycling program the day of the event. Get to the 'Root' of floral design

ENCINITAS ---- Quail Botanical Gardens will host the "Floral Design with David Root" workshop from 2-4 p.m. Sept. 28 at the garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive. Root will demonstrate using unusual plant material and containers. Students will create their own floral arrangements to take home. Bring a floral knife, clippers, wire cutters and scissors.
