Theater group to hold auditions

VALLEY CENTER ---- Valley Center Community Theater will hold auditions for "Mr. Scrooge's Christmas (A Christmas Carol)" from 6:30-8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Valley Center Library, 29200 Cole Grade Road. Grandmothers club to meet

American Legion Auxiliary to host meals

ESCONDIDO ---- American Legion Auxiliary Unit 149 will host a dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 3 at the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 Park Ave., with meatloaf and gravy, baked potatoes, vegetables, salad, rolls, dessert and coffee for a donation of $8.

The auxiliary will serve breakfast from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the same location. Donation is $6.

Proceeds benefit children and youths, community services, veterans and other charitable programs.

The auxiliary meets the first Thursday of each month at the Veterans Memorial Building. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 2. District President Suzanne Tozier will attend. Call (760) 741-1813.

Guitarist to perform at Escondido Library

Discover San Marcos Hike set

SAN MARCOS ---- The city's Community Services Department will present a free Discover San Marcos Hike from 9 a.m.-noon Oct. 4. The moderately difficult 4- to 5-mile hike will explore the trails north and west of San Elijo Park, including Sunset, Old Creek Ranch and Canyon trails. Meet and sign in at the San Elijo Park/Recreation Center parking lot. Walking shoes are recommended. Bring water and trail snacks. An adult must accompany all minors. Dogs must be leashed at all times.

Artists invited to submit works in glass

Museum recycling cell phones

SAN MARCOS ---- To help keep old cell phones out of landfills, the San Marcos Historical Society and Museum is participating in a recycling program in which a company repairs old phones for reuse in Third World countries. ESCONDIDO ---- The Woman's Club of Escondido will hold a luncheon meeting at 11 a.m. Oct. 6 at its clubhouse, 741 N. Rose St.

Tina Inscoe, fine arts administrator for the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, will talk about the future of the arts center. She also will give an update on the artists scheduled to perform at the center.

Flu shot clinic set for Oct. 9

ESCONDIDO ---- Maxim Health Systems has partnered with Emeritus of Escondido (aka Villa Del Rey) to offer flu and pneumonia immunizations from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the retirement community, 1351 E. Washington Ave. Shots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.

Participants with Medicare Part B coverage will receive their shot free. Free immunization also will be provided to anyone covered by Maxim contracted Managed Care Plans. For all others, the cost is $30 for flu shots; $45 for pneumonia shots.

Event to benefit arts education

SAN DIEGO ---- Center Artes at Cal State San Marcos, with the Museum of Man, will present "Art Without A Drought" on Oct. 18 at the museum, 1350 El Prado, in Balboa Park.

The event is being held to raise funds for arts education and to honor three individuals for their significant arts contributions: Elsie Weston for arts philanthropy, Ron Jessee for his work as county arts education coordinator, and Greg Evans, artist and "Luann" comic strip creator.

The evening will include informal museum tours, food and drinks, and a treasure hunt. There also will be performances by opera star Nina Warren, Grammy-winning composer Dr. Bill Bradbury, award-winning young artist Andy Leu and CSUSM students.
