MSJC marks Disabilities Awareness Month

MENIFEE ---- A series to mark Disabilities Awareness Month will be held Tuesdays in October at Mt. San Jacinto College Menifee campus. There will be three films and a speaker.

Films will be shown from noon to 4 p.m. in Room LRC 105.

---- Oct. 7 ---- "The Waterdance," a movie about a novelist who becomes paraplegic following a hiking accident.

---- Oct. 21 ---- "Sling Blade," Oscar-award winning tale about a developmental disabled man who's just been released from a psychiatric hospital 25 years after he committed a gruesome crime and returns to the southern town of his youth.

---- Oct. 28 ---- "Compensation," a film about the life of an African American woman who is deaf in the early 1900s, paralleled with the life of another woman, who is deaf living in the 1990s.

David Smith, a Hollywood stuntman and actor, will speak from noon to 2 p.m. Oct. 14.

Smith, who was born missing the lower part of his left arm, is the founder and executive director of Stunts-Ability, which offers training courses for stunts, acting and effects in the film industries.

The campus is at Antelope and La Piedra roads.

Special Olympics seeks volunteer leader

TEMECULA ---- Special Olympics Southern California is looking for an experienced leader to serve in the volunteer role of area director of Temecula Valley.

There are approximately 150 Temecula-area residents with intellectual disabilities who participate in the year-round sports training and competition program.

The area director, working with the regional director, will recruit, train and oversee a leadership team and committee members to ensure opportunities are available to all current and future athletes.

Wildomar to host street fair, car show

WILDOMAR ---- The inaugural Wildomar Street Fair and Car Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Proceeds will benefit area food banks.

There will be vendor booths, a giant slide, bounce house, music and other activities.

Cornerstone Motorsports is hosting the car show, which has space for 80 vehicles. On display will be the International Rectifier Solar Car, the world's first solar powered passenger car, made in 1958.

There will be raffles for gift baskets and other prizes. Anyone who brings two canned- or packaged-food items will receive a free raffle ticket.

The event is sponsored by the Wildomar Community Council, a nonprofit organization that is working to bring a food bank to the newly incorporated city.

CHP plans golf tourney

The Temecula Area CHP will host its 16th annual charity golf tournament Oct. 6 at Temecula Creek Inn.

The tournament will benefit the 11-99 foundation, CHP Widows and Orphans fund, TIP, Special Olympics and Think First.

Museum present workshop

TEMECULA ---- The Imagination Workshop/Temecula Children's museum will help people get ready for Halloween with a workshop from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Participants will learn what skeletons, dry ice and popcorn have in common.

Admission is $5 per person and free for those younger than 3.

Computer course begins Wednesday

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Computer and Internet classes for adults will be offered at the Lake Elsinore Library in October.

Basic computer skills will be taught Wednesday, basic Internet on Oct. 22 and "Office, covering programs such as Word and Excel, will be held Oct. 29. All courses will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m.

Museum offers gallery talk

TEMECULA ---- Whitney Wilkinson, the great-grandson of Walter Vail, will speak at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2 at Temecula Valley Museum.

He will give provide a look into the museum's current exhibit of items from the Wilkinson Collection and share recollections of his family's experience.

The Wilkinson Collection is the most important collection of historical artifacts, photographs, maps and documentation from the Vail Ranch archives The collection was amassed by Sandy Wilkinson, Whitney's father, one of the last of the Vail Ranch hands.

The museum also will offer a Family Day Leather Workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The instructor, William Hines, has received several awards for his work. The workshop will include a history of working with leather; samples of some of Hines' award-winning work and an project that each class member can take home. There is a $2 fee for the class.

The museum is in Sam Hicks Monument Park at 28314 Mercedes St. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. A donation of $2 per person is requested.

Rotary plans Oktoberfest

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Lake Elsinore Rotary Club will hold its second Oktoberfest from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at McVicker Park.

The event will feature German food, entertainment, arts and crafts for children and adults, and a soda, beer and wine garden.

Proceeds will benefit the Rotary club's programs, such as awards and programs for students, teachers and senior citizens as well as international projects for polio eradication and to build water wells.

Tickets are $3 and children younger than 12 are free.

Animals to be blessed

Shepherd of Life Lutheran Church In Lake Elsinore will celebrate "The Blessing of the Animals" at 10 a.m. Saturday. Saint Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Temecula will hold a similar event at 3 p.m. Oct. 5.

The events commemorate St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology.

All animals are invited, whether they have hooves, fur, feathers, horns or scales. Pets must be properly leashed or crated. Participants also may bring a photo of their pet to receive a blessing.

Animal Friends of the Valleys will be at both events, offering microchips for $15. The agency also will be collecting donations of cash and supplies such as pet food, laundry detergent, toys, blankets, towels, bleach and dish detergent.

Dinner to benefit Circle of Hope

TEMECULA ---- Frank Mercardante, a bank executive and ordained Roman Catholic minister, will host a fundraising dinner Saturday at his Temecula home to benefit New Haven Youth and Family Services, which provides residential, educational and social services to 12 to 18-year-old at-risk boys.

Chef Jeff Henderson, a former executive chef at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, will reveal how he went from hustling drugs on San Diego's streets to hustling foie gras in prestigious hotels.

The event will feature wine, chocolate and food and music from the Cecilia String Quartet.

Women pilots plan poker run

FRENCH VALLEY ---- Coyote Country chapter of the Ninety-Nines Inc., an international organization of female pilots, will have its 17th annual poker run from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 4.

Participants may start at any of six participating airports, but must finish at French Valley Airport and be checked in by 2:30 p.m. The other participating airports are Fallbrook, Oceanside, Ramona, Gillespie Field and Hemet Ryan.

Pilots will receive playing cards at each airport. Awards will be given for the best poker hands. To be eligible for prizes, planes must land at five airports.

Cost is $4 per hand, $10 for three hands. Proceeds support women planning careers in aviation.

Belly dancing event upcoming

TEMECULA ---- The Baakari Foundation will present "Beyond our Borders," a belly dance extravaganza and bazaar, Oct. 5 at Old Town Temecula Community Theater.

The event will feature belly dance instruction and demonstration on an outdoor stage.The bazaar will feature booths with interesting and unusual goods.

The fundraiser will help to launch the Baakari Foundation, which plans to make its first donations to Operation Greyhound, a rescue program, the Riverside County Fostering Program, and its sister program, Animal Friends of the Valley.

The Bazaar will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Performances will be at 3 and 7 p.m.

TIP plans training

TEMECULA ---- Trauma Intervention Programs is looking for volunteers to be part of a team of citizen volunteers trained to provide emotional first aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events.

TIP volunteers are called to emergency scenes by police, firefighters and hospital personnel in Canyon Lake, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Perris, Sun City, Temecula, Wildomar, and surrounding areas.

An orientation and training class is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct 15. Training consists of four additional weeknights and three weekend days, with graduation Oct. 25 .

Nonprofits sought for festival

TEMECULA ----- Nonprofit community service organizations are invited to participate in the city's Halloween Family carnival from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

Groups may request a 10-foot, by 10-foot game booth for no charge. The group is responsible for providing table, chairs, canopies and game supplies. The city will provide candy and prizes.

MURRIETA ---- Vendor spaces are available for two events in Murrieta.

A Holiday Gift Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 at the Murrieta Senior Center and the Festival under the Stars Craft Fair will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 at Town Square Park.

Both events will include vendors selling homemade goods and direct sale company items.

Booth space for the Holiday Gift Boutique costs $7. Space for Festival Under the Stars is $30.

Mountain Rescue Unit holding auction

Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit is holding a raffle for a weekend golf package for two in order to raise operational funds.

The grand prize includes two nights and two rounds of golf at the Warner Springs Ranch. Second prize is children's golf lessons with PGA pro Mike Raschko.

Funds raised will go toward operational expenses and the training on a large group of members who have recently joined the team.

RMRU is a volunteer, nonprofit, mountain search and rescue team.

Volunteers needed at Family Service Association

Family Service Association is seeking volunteers and community service workers.

The association working throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties with child development centers, senior nutrition, mental health clinics and community centers.

Assistance program under way

Representatives are available at two Southwest County locations to provide free assistance to people needing help applying for homeowner or renter assistance.

Eligible residents must be 62 years or older, or blind or disabled, and a United States citizen, designated alien or qualified alien. Claimants must have owned and occupied a home or mobile home on Dec. 31, 2007, or paid at least $50 in rent each month with a household income in 2007 of $44,096 or less.

Aid is also available from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays at Mary Phillips Senior Center, 41845 Sixth St., Temecula and 9 a.m. to noon Thursdays at Murrieta Senior Center, 41717 Juniper St.

No appointment is necessary. The service will be offered until Oct. 14.

Participants must bring proof of age or disability, property tax bill if a homeowner, federal and state tax returns for 2007 and any other income records.
