TEMECULA ---- A chemical spill caused a business in the industrial area on the northwest side of the city to be evacuated and kept employees from surrounding companies away from the area Monday afternoon.

At about 12:45 p.m, authorities responded to a report of a chemical spill outside the warehouse for Oreq Corp., a pool supply distributor at 42306 Remington Ave. Temecula Fire Capt. Sean Dakin said 100 pounds of dry chlorine had been spilled and a chemical reaction took place.

He said the cause of the spill was under investigation.

Officials from the Riverside County Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team and the county Public Health Department joined Temecula fire and police officials at the scene. Remington Avenue was closed off to traffic between Winchester and Diaz Road for nearly three hours as officials secured the area.

Oreq's approximately 40 employees were evacuated as a precaution, officials said. Dakin said three people suffered minor injuries and they were treated on the scene before being released.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the symptoms of chlorine exposure include coughing, burning of the nose, throat and eyes as well as difficulty breathing.
