Latino celebration planned
ESCONDIDO ---- Three San Pasqual High School students groups ----Â LALIO, Ballet Folklorico and Club RAYATE ---- will hold a Hispanic Heritage Celebration Fair from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 30 on campus, 3300 Bear Valley Parkway. The event will feature music, food and games for students and their families.
Dream Dinners to host open house

Embroiderers group to meet

Lake Poway closed for maintenance
POWAY ---- Lake Poway will be closed to boating and fishing Mondays through Fridays, Oct. 1-31, for maintenance and to prepare for trout season. Fishing and boating will be available Saturdays and Sundays. The park areas will remain open from 7 a.m. to sunset daily. Trout season will run from Nov. 5 through the end of March.

Pain management class offered
ESCONDIDO ---- OASIS senior education will offer a class on pain management presented by Dr. Christopher Chisolm from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 3 at the Joslyn Senior Center, 210 Park Ave. Fee is $3. Register at (760) 432-0635.
Free hikes offered at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO ---- Free guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least two liters of water; wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths under 18 must be with an adult. No pets. Unless otherwise noted, meet at the La Honda Drive entrance. A shuttle with handicapped accessibility runs Sundays.

-- 6:30 a.m. Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31: "Beat the Heat Mystery Tour." Beat the heat by joining naturalist Kathleen Flanagan's early morning hike. Based on the group's make-up, she will select a trail for a fast-paced, strenuous walk of about 7 miles.
-- 8:30 a.m. Oct. 5: "Tracking the Wily Coyote." Naturalist Susan Cunningham will teach hikers how to identify coyote footprints and signs.
-- 3:30 p.m. Oct. 7 and 21: "Fitness Hike." Enjoy an afternoon fitness hike led by naturalist Rita Ospelt.
-- 6 p.m. Oct. 7 and 21: "Stroll Around the Ranch." Naturalist Michelle Capodice will lead a leisurely hike to the Ranch House and talk about the local plants and animals.

Doll show and sale on tap

Train Song Festival set for Oct. 4
POWAY ---- The city and San Diego Folk Heritage will sponsor the annual Train Song Festival from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 4 at Old Poway Park, 14134 Midland Road.
This free family event will feature live musical entertainment, train-related vendors and displays, arts and crafts, food, storytelling, mock train robberies, and children's entertainment. The Poway Midland Railroad will provide train rides aboard the 1907 Baldwin Steam Engine for a nominal fee.
A Railroad Movie Under the Stars will be shown at 7 p.m. at the park gazebo. Bring blankets. Popcorn and other refreshments will be sold.

Disaster program set for Oct. 5
ESCONDIDO ---- Community Lutheran Church & Preschool will host a speaker from the San Diego Office of Emergency Services at 11 a.m. Oct. 5 at the church, 3575 E. Valley Parkway.
The presentation will cover the risks that threaten San Diego County, how to put together a family disaster plan, and what to include in a disaster supply kit.

'Echoes from the Past' tours set
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido History Center will present "Echoes from the Past V" on Oct. 5 at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
Docents will lead small groups through a portion of the park where actors portraying deceased residents will describe their lives in Escondido. This year's tour will feature the lives of pioneer Rose McGookin Culp; newspaper publisher Alvin Dunn; civic leader Lloyd "Lefty" Mitchell; ranchers William and Leticia Prior; and teacher Hettie Malory Wade.
Tours will start every 15 minutes, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Each tour will last 45 to 60 minutes. Cost is $10 for adults and free for children 10 and younger.

Entries sought for student art contest
SAN MARCOS ---- The city is accepting entries for its High School Student Art Show to be held with San Marcos Alive street fair scheduled from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 5 at the San Marcos Civic Center, 1 Civic Center Drive.
Categories are oil and acrylic, watercolor and water media, other (drawing, pastel, photography, computer art and mixed media) and 3D (clay, metal, stone, papier mache, wire.)
Students in grades nine through 12 are encouraged to enter art completed during the past year. No entry fee; limit of three entries per student. Winners will receive cash and prizes donated by local businesses. All entries will be displayed and the winners announced at San Marcos Alive.

Republican women's group to meet
LAKE SAN MARCOS ---- Lake San Marcos Republican Women will meet at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive.
Martin Garrick will talk about what is happening in Sacramento. After lunch, the group will discuss propositions and other ballot issues.

Gourd art class offered Oct. 11
ESCONDIDO ---- The Baiamonte Gourd Farm will offer a gourd art class from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 11. Learn how to select, handle and clean gourds; mark and cut intricate details; clean the inside of the gourd; strengthen weak walls; and seal and apply a lasting finish.
Classes are limited to small groups for one-on-one instruction. Cost of $40 includes a cleaning kit and a gourd to take home as a finished piece of art.

YMCA plans annual gala
ESCONDIDO ---- The Palomar Family YMCA's 11th annual Y Event, "Emerald Isle Gala," will be held at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 in the Conference Center at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
The event will include dinner, dancing to music by the Mar Dels, and silent and live auctions. Funds raised will support programs and facilities at the YMCA.

Rotary Club plans Wii Tournament
POWAY ---- Adults and children are invited to enter the Rotary Club of Poway's first Wii Tournament from 3-7 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Poway Senior Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive.
The tournament will pit competitors in tennis and baseball on the Wii video game system. Other games, such as boxing and Olympic sports, will be available.
Prizes are a trophy and $100 for first place; and trophies and certificates for second and third places.
