Mission gift shop now open

OCEANSIDE ---- The first St. Francis Sale at the newly remodeled Mission San Luis Rey Gift Shop will be held Oct. 1-15 at 4050 Mission Ave. Visitors can get holiday shopping done early and receive a 20 percent discount of purchases. The shop has cards and spiritual art, rosaries and bibles, books, music and other religious items. The first in a series of new mission holiday cards also will be available. LIFE at MiraCosta to meet

OCEANSIDE ---- LIFE at MiraCosta, a lifelong learning group, will meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 3 in Room 1068 at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. John Daley, photo archivist and vice president of the Oceanside Historical Society, will present a pictorial history of Oceanside.

Annual Eastside Fall Faire upcoming

OMA holds free Family Art Day

Vacancies on Youth Commission

OCEANSIDE ---- The city of Oceanside has six vacancies on its Youth Commission. Four voting positions are open to residents in grades 9-12, and two intern positions are available for residents in grades 7 and 8.

The commission meets at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month in City Council chambers. All commissioners supply input to the council on issues relating to Oceanside youths such as the skateboard park. They are also involved in city government through ad hoc committees with the goal of hosting an annual Teen Fest in the spring. Voting members review applications for youth-oriented block grants and Coca-Cola minigrants and offer recommendations to the council. St. Mary's holds annual luau

OCEANSIDE ---- Tickets are now on sale for the eighth annual Hawaiian Luau to benefit St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School. The event will be from 3-8 p.m. Oct. 4 at 515 Wisconsin Ave. Tickets are $15 adults; $5 children under 10. Dinner will be served from 4:30-6 p.m. and include Kalua pig, chicken long rice, teriyaki beef, rice, macaroni salad, fruit, dessert and punch. Children 10 and under will have teriyaki beef or children, rice, fruit, dessert and punch.

Entertainment will be provided by Semisi and Fula Bula Band from 4-6 p.m.; and "Varua Tahiti e" Dancers at 7 p.m. A variety of gift items will be raffled throughout the evening. Raffle tickets are 6 for $5 or 25 for $20. There will be activities for the entire family. Funds raised will support programs and a scholarship fund for students in pre-K through eighth grade. Health fair set in Vista

VISTA ---- Vista Community Clinic will hold a free Health and Community Resource Fair to mark Binational Health Week (Oct.6-15) from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 11 at 846 Williamston St. The fair will include more than 20 vendors, health education demonstrations, raffles and food samples.

Senior center to salute Oktoberfest

Senior center to host Wii Games

Seniors can get exercise while having fun and competing with other seniors. Rotary to host 26th annual Oktoberfest

CARLSBAD ---- The 26th annual Carlsbad Rotary Oktoberfest will be held from 1-10 p.m. Oct. 4 at Holiday Park, between Tamarack Avenue and Carlsbad Village Drive. Historical society needs volunteers

Fire Department to host Fire Safety Expo

ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Fire Department will celebrate National Fire Prevention Week with an outdoor expo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Moonlight Beach parking lot at Third and C streets. Fire Prevention Week extends from Oct. 5-11 this year and will be supported by fire departments across the country. The event will feature activities including fire extinguisher demonstrations, a vehicle rescue exhibition using the Jaws of Life car-cutting tool, and exhibits for the public to view, including a fire engine, ambulance, ASTREA helicopter and other rescue equipment. Children will have an opportunity to spot fire hazards in the interactive fire safety trailer, learn stop, drop and roll techniques, and dress up in firefighter clothing. Kiwanis fundraiser, luau set for Oct. 4

ENCINITAS ---- The Greater Encinitas Kiwanis will host its fundraising Beach Luau from 4:30-8 p.m. Oct. 4 at Moonlight Beach. Besides Hawaiian music and food, the event will also feature a silent auction and raffles. Cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12. Orchestra kicks off 25th anniversary

RANCHO SANTA FE ---- Celebrating its Silver Anniversary, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra will open its 2008-2009 season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe with a concert featuring the music of three generations of Mozarts. The club will serve wine and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. The evening will feature music from Leopold (father), Wolfgang (son) and Franz Xaver Mozart (grandson); a short talk by Joe Beechem, vice president of research and chief technology officer at Invitrogen Corp., about the role of genes as they relate to musical talent; and a performance by 14-year-old pianist Rosinna Grieco.
