St. Francis Day celebrated

OCEANSIDE ---- Old Mission Montessori School and Mission San Luis Rey Parish will hold St. Francis Day Festivities from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 4 on the front lawn of the mission, 4070 Mission Ave. Community members can bring their pets to be blessed by parish priests at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be lots of kids' activities; the Humane Society will have animals for adoption. Tri-City to hold volunteer orientation

OCEANSIDE ---- Tri-City Hospital Auxiliary is looking for energetic people 19 years of age and older who are interested in helping others in the different departments at Tri-City Medical Center. Departments include the Reception Desk, Courtesy Shuttle, Registration, Customer Relations, Escort Service, Emergency, Laboratory, Pharmacy and Gift Shop. Volunteers work in four-hour shifts, weekdays and weekends, and are asked to serve at least 100 hours a year.

An orientation program for prospective volunteers will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 8 at the hospital, 4002 Vista Way. Register in advance by calling the auxiliary office between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays at (760) 940-3125.

Scholarship gala benefits arts students

OCEANSIDE ---- As part of OMFest, the annual Oceanside Music Festival, the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation will hold a Performing Arts Scholarship Gala Oct. 11 to raise funds for help high school performers further their dreams. The champagne reception will begin at 6 p.m. in the Oceanside Museum of Art School of Art, 219 N. Coast Highway. At 7 p.m., the event will move to the Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 Coast Highway, where the foundation will recognize and honor four community musicians who have spent a lifetime promoting the arts and supporting young performing artists: Rich Lange, Don Megill, Dave Megill and Eliane Weidauer. Guests will also hear preview performances from several of the Oceanside Music Festival concerts.

VFW Post open for meals

VISTA ---- Vista VFW Post 7041 is open to the public for special meals four times a week at 1717 E. Vista Way. The special dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 is meat loaf, veggies and salad for $6.50. Regular menu items also are available. Special dinners for the week are:

-- Oct. 4 noon-2 p.m., Grandma's 1/2 pound burgers and fries $4. Steak and lobster dinner will be served from 2-6 p.m. with music by The Orbitz from 4-8 p.m. A few tickets are still available at the door for $22.

-- Oct. 5, 8:30 a.m.-noon, chicken fried steak and eggs, $6.50.

-- Oct. 7, steak and baked potato, $6.50.

'Peter and the Wolf' to be performed

OCEANSIDE ---- The Pacific Coast Concert Band will perform "Peter and the Wolf" at 3 p.m. Oct. 19 at Mission San Luis Rey, 4070 Mission Ave. Seating is on the lawn so families should bring lawn chairs. Open house at Vista fire stations

VISTA ---- Celebrate Fire Prevention Week by brining the family to an open house at one of the Vista Fire Stations from 6-8:30 p.m. Oct. 6. Those stations include No. 1, 175 N. Melrose Drive; No. 2, 1050 Valley Drive; No. 3, 1070 Old Taylor Road; and No. 4, 2121 Thibodo Road.

Chinese herbs topic of class

DAR to hold workshop

VISTA ---- The Rancho Buena Vista Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a workshop for women over age 18 from 9:30 -11:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at the Vista Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave. Subjects to be covered include using genealogy resources and finding required documentation to complete and substantiate information for an application for the DAR. Senior center offers rides

CARLSBAD ---- Carlsbad residents 60 years of age and older who cannot drive and are in need of transportation for medical appointments or grocery shopping can contact the Carlsbad Senior Center’s Transportation Program for assistance. Transportation for medical appointments is provided Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Appointments must be made at 2 p.m. or later and end by 4:30 p.m. Service area is limited. Wednesday afternoons are reserved for grocery shopping at Stater Brothers. The first Thursday afternoon of the month transportation is provided to go to Wal-Mart or Trader Joe’s. Community band to offer fall concert

CARLSBAD ------ The Coastal Communities Concert Band will hold its fall concert “A Tribute to Don Caneva” at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 5, Carlsbad Community Church, 3175 Harding St. The program will include “In the Miller Mood,” “Big Band Signatures,” and “A Salute to Disney.” Joining the band will be vocalist Michael Ruhl, who will perform a medley of Frank Sinatra songs and selections by George Gershwin. Harding Center to offer Kids’ cooking classes

Women voters get acquainted

CARLSBAD ------The nonpartisan North Coast League of Women Voters will hold its introductory coffee for prospective members at 10 a.m. Oct. 11 at a private residence, 2806 Jacaranda Ave. The event will offers prospective members an overview of the league’s activities continued throughout the year. Currently, the membership is registering citizens and disseminating nonpartisan information about the ballot measures appearing in the forthcoming election. Throughout the rest of the year, meetings are held monthly for discussions and education about current local, state and national government policies. Members take turns observing government meetings such as city councils, school boards, planning commissions, county authority groups, and hospitals, and report back to their local unit. Volunteer drivers needed for seniors

ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Senior Center’s Out & About Program is seeking volunteer drivers to take senior citizens to the pharmacy, Senior Center, doctor appointments and grocery store. Volunteers will be responsible for transporting senior citizens in their own vehicle and will be reimbursed the current annual IRS rate per mile. Call (760) 943-2256.

Senior center to host T’ai Chi class

ENCINITAS ---- The Encinitas Senior Center will offer a beginning T’ai Chi Chih class, from 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Fridays at the center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Taste of Del Mar set for Saturday

DEL MAR ---- The Del Mar Village Association, with the support of the city of Del Mar and the Del Mar branch of the San Diego County Library, will host its seventh annual Taste of Del Mar and Art Stroll from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 4 throughout the downtown village on Camino Del Mar starting at 15th Street, and extending to 11th Street. The event will feature original art work from more than 70 artists. The Taste of Del Mar will be held from noon to 4 p.m. and offer variety of culinary creations offered by 20 of Del Mar’s finest restaurants as well as premier wines and ales. Cost for the Taste of Del Mar is $40. Public parking and pedicab transportation will be available at the Del Mar Shores/Winston School, 215 Ninth Street.
