Marching band tournament set

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- Westview High School will host a marching band tournament at 6 p.m. Oct. 4 at Wolverine Stadium, 13500 Camino del Sur. High school bands from throughout the area will compete in the tournament. Westview Gold's Marching Band will perform its field show, "Technology," as the finale. Family Fair to benefit Habitat for Humanity

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Friends With Class will present the second annual San Diego Family Fair from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 5 at Bernardo Winery, 13330 Paseo del Verano Norte. Free admission and parking.

The event will feature free concerts by Patty Hall's Jumpin' Up Songs and Semisi & The Fula Bula Band, an inflatable jumper, $5 pony rides, vendors and raffles featuring prizes donated by mom-run and family-friendly businesses. All proceeds will benefit Habitat for Humanity.

Poets Inc. to meet Oct. 5

Artists invited to submit work

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Art Association invites artists to enter the October Open Art Show to run Oct. 5-Nov. 1 at the Artists Gallery, 121 W. Grand Ave.

Drop off up to three pieces of artwork at the gallery between 2 and 6 p.m. Oct. 6. First-, second- and third-place awards will be presented in four categories: oil/acrylic, watercolor, pastel/dry media, and mixed media/sculpture. Also, a Best of Show award will be presented at a reception from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 11.

San Marcos Alive street fair on tap

SAN MARCOS ---- The city's 11th annual San Marcos Alive (Celebration of the Arts Street Fair) will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Civic Center and on San Marcos Boulevard, between Mission Road and Rancheros Drive.

Fair-goers can shop at vendor booths, watch art demonstrations and participate in more than 20 hands-on art projects. Two entertainment stages will feature performances by local schools and music groups. There also will be a juried art show and a student art show.

RP Library Friends plan book sale

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- The Friends of the Rancho Penasquitos Library will hold a Bargain Book Sale from 1-7:30 p.m. Oct. 6, 8 and 10; 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 7 and 9; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the library, 13330 Salmon River Road.

Safe driving class offered for seniors

ESCONDIDO ---- The Senior Service Council will offer a two-part AARP "55 Alive" safe driving class from 8 a.m.-noon Oct. 7 and 14 in the Dorothy E. Boeger Building, 728 N. Broadway.

Upon completion, seniors will receive a certificate good for three years entitling them to a reduction in the cost of their auto insurance. Cost is $10, payable by check only to AARP.

'Vision and Success at School' workshop set

SAN MARCOS ---- "Vision and Success at School," a workshop for parents or teachers of children who are having problems with reading and reading-related subjects, will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 8 at It's Academic Tutoring Center, 1615 S. Rancho Santa Fe Road, Suite A.

Learn testing techniques to identify the problem. Clinical information on visual limits that interfere with learning and what can be done to correct them will be covered.

CEC offers lectures, Old Globe tickets

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- The Continuing Education Center at Rancho Bernardo will offer these lectures at the Remington Club, 16916 Hierba Drive:

-- "Slavery, the American West and the Civil War" presented by Dr. John Putnam, 10 a.m. Oct. 7.

-- "Ostracism in Ancient Greece" presented by Dr. Patricia Dintrone, 1:30 p.m. Oct. 8.

Democratic Club to host convention

POWAY ---- The Poway Democratic Club will host its own Democratic convention at 7 p.m. Oct. 9 in the Little Theater (Room 608) at Twin Peaks Middle School, 14640 Tierra Bonita Road. Free.

The keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. Bob Filner, 51st Congressional District. All of the endorsed Democratic candidates appearing on Poway's November ballot also are scheduled to speak, including Mike Lumpkin, candidate for the 52nd Congressional District; Darren Kasai, candidate for the 75th Assembly District; and Howard Collins, candidate for the Poway City Council. Other speakers will address state propositions and national issues.

Learn about bats at Blue Sky program

POWAY ---- Bat expert Dick Wilkins will debunk the myths and legends surrounding one of the most beneficial night-time creatures at a program from 6-7:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve. Afterward, meet live bats and watch them feed up close.

Sugar Skulls workshop offered

ESCONDIDO ---- A Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls workshop for adults and children will be offered from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Mingei International Museum, 155 W. Grand Ave.

Decorate a sugar skull to adorn a Dia de los Muertos altar and share in the centuries-old Mexican ritual dedicated to remembering loved ones who have passed on.

Artists group hosts exhibition

POWAY ---- Artists in Action, a local group of award-winning artists, is hosting an exhibition of recent paintings through Oct. 28 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road. A gala reception is planned from 2-4 p.m. Oct. 12 at the arts center.

The exhibition will feature an array of realistic, impressionistic and abstract work in a variety of media. Travel group offers Laughlin trip

RB utility boxes will be painted

PowPAC seeks volunteers

POWAY ---- PowPAC, Poway's Community Theatre, is seeking volunteers. Help is most needed in hospitality (greeters, ushers, refreshments), at the box office and with set painting.

Other volunteer opportunities include lighting and sound technicians, stage management, set construction and props, costumes and makeup, facilities maintenance, planning social events and administration. An assistant volunteer coordinator also is needed. All ages welcome.
