Michelle's Place offers free mammograms
MURRIETA ---- In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Michelle's Place, Breast Cancer Resource Center, will provide free mammogram screenings to women who cannot otherwise afford to pay for one during October.
For the fifth year, the center, together with Michele Broad and Temecula Valley Imagining, will provide mammogram screenings to women in the Temecula and Murrieta area who are uninsured and in need of their annual screening. They can call Michelle's Place for details and an application.
Michelle's Place provides free wigs, prosthesis, self-help groups, a survivor network, a lending library, meditation classes and information on resources available to women and their families dealing with breast cancer. Its Pink Ribbon Assistance program provides basic needs assistance.

Santa Rosa Plateau offering volunteer training
MURRIETA ---- The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve will host a volunteer training course beginning Saturday.
The training sessions are designed to educate participants in the natural and cultural resources of the plateau and to teach the professional techniques used to share this information with visitors.
Training sessions will take place from 9:30 a.m. to noon the first two Saturdays of each month, October through February. Speakers will present programs on topics such as mountain lions, tarantulas, medicinal plant use and geology.
Participation in a majority of the training sessions will prepare volunteers to aid in a number of duties, including guiding hikes, presenting programs for visiting school groups, staffing the reserve's Visitor Center and trail patrol.
Sessions will be held at both the Reserve Visitor Center and the Murrieta Senior Center. Saturday's training will be at the Visitor Center, 39400 Clinton Keith Road.

Water savings workshop set
TEMECULA ---- A home gardening and water conservation workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Community Recreation Center.
Speakers will address ways to save money and water when gardening and discuss appropriate plants for landscaping homes in Southwest County.
Information tables, exhibits and demonstrations will be open throughout the workshop.

MURRIETA ---- Voter registration will be accepted at various Murrieta sites the next two weekend. The deadline to register for the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 20.

Monthly art walk is Saturday

Monthly jazz program on tap

Habitat ornament contest deadline nears
TEMECULA ---- Habitat for Humanity is seeking entries into the second annual Home for the Holidays ornament contest.
The home theme is symbolic of Habitat's mission of developing communities for people in need and symbolizes the completion of a five-house project in Old Town Temecula and a neighborhood revitalization in Lake Elsinore this year. Entries should portray a piece of art that signifies home and is identifiable with the holiday season.
Entries should be in color and can be of any size, keeping in mind the artwork will be transposed onto a 3-inch flat, porcelain ornament.
Entries must be submitted by Oct. 10. The winner will be chosen by Oct. 15.
The winning selection will be featured on the ornament, along with the name of the artist.

Pro-life rally Oct. 11

Cheer clinic planned
TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley High School Cheer program will hold a cheer clinic fundraiser from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 12.
Children will be taught a cheer that they will perform on the field during the home football game on Oct 17.
The cost is $35 in advance and $45 the day of the event. A T-shirt and snack will be provided. Proceeds benefit the school's cheer program.

Walk to benefit pregnant women
LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Elsinore Valley Pregnancy Resource Center will hold its annual Walk For Life from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Machado Park.
The 1 1/2-mile walk is a way to support mothers and babies and to raise money for the free services the Resource Center provides. There will be entertainment and refreshments. Those who donate at least $50 will receive a walk T-shirt.
The center serves pregnant women and their families in Lake Elsinore, Temescal Valley, Murrieta, Perris, Menifee and the Wildomar areas

Advance directive workshop set
TEMECULA ---- A free workshop about advance directives will be held at 4 and 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chateau at Harveston retirement community.
An advance directive spells out action a person wants taken for their health if they are incapable of making those decisions on their own.
The workshops will be led by a social worker and registered nurse from Ramona VNA and Hospice.
There will be follow up workshops at 4 and 7 p.m. Oct. 14.
The workshops are open to anyone 18 or older.

Blood pressure clinic planned at center
LAKE ELSINORE ---- A free blood pressure clinic will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Lake Elsinore Senior Center.
The clinic will be hosted by the Visiting Nurses Association of Inland Counties, which visits the center the first Tuesday of each month.

Senior Center plans trips
MURRIETA ---- The Temecula Senior Service Center is offering two trips.
The group will visit Viejas Casino on Nov. 17. The cost is $6, which includes a $5 coupon for lunch. The bus will leave at 8:30 a.m. and return around 6 p.m.
There also will be a Christmas party Dec. 10 to 12 at the Riverside Hotel in Laughlin, Nev. The cost is $117 per person single occupancy or $107 double occupancy. It includes three free buffets and a party with music, a buffet and prizes.

Canine support team marks 20th anniversary
TEMECULA ---- A benefit dinner to help celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Canine Support Teams will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 11
The team has placed more than 300 highly trained service dogs with disabled individuals throughout the nation in its 20 years. CST service dogs are placed with people who use wheelchairs, walkers, crutches or canes.
They are trained to assist their partners by pulling manual wheelchairs, turning lights on and off, pushing elevator buttons, retrieving dropped or hard to reach items, making purchases or banking transactions, opening and closing doors and drawers and providing stability for walking.
The fundraiser will be hosted by Lori Stone.

Animal Friends plan Halloween event
