TEMECULA: Border Patrol seizes $1 million in cocaine at checkpoint
By North County Times | ∞
TEMECULA ---- Border Patrol agents at the Interstate 15 checkpoint in Temecula found more than $1 million worth of cocaine hidden in a car's gas tank this week, the agency said Friday.
Tuesday morning, an agent at the checkpoint stopped a Mercedes-Benz that was going north, a news release states. Its driver and a passenger, two Mexican men traveling in the country legally, told the agent they were going to visit relatives in Rancho Cucamonga. The agent sent the car for a secondary inspection.
Drug-searching dogs directed agents to the gas tank, where they found 11 bundles of cocaine weighing a total of 32 pounds and worth about $1,054,400, the release states. The two men and the drugs were turned over to U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement.

Always on Duty US CUSTOMBORDER PATROL wrote on Oct 3, 2008 11:28 AM:BP has a long proud history! We must remember it! As far back as 1895, when a US Border Officers then referred to as "Line-Riders" stood a post alone. One by the name of J. Keno Wilson was hired for the U. S. Customs Service during that year and stationed at Campo, having jurisdiction from Dulzura to Yuma. A visitor to Campo during that period said: "The night we stayed at the hotel at Campo, Keno Wilson was sitting out on the porch with a Winchester across his knees." It is easy to assume that with the rifle-toting Customs man on hand, there was no trouble in Campo that night. Much like those on duty in Temecula of recent!
During his tour of duty at Campo, Keno Wilson was the proud possessor of a badge which was, to say the least, unique. The badge, recently presented to the Serra Museum by his grand-daughter, Mrs. Martha Mahoney of San Francisco, is fashioned from a Mexican silver peso.
In 1899 Keno Wilson left the Customs Service and continued a 50 year long career law enforcement throughout San Diego and Souther California!
That is the legacy of the US Border Patrol! Good job BP!

Coke is probably from Colombia, by the way.
Greg in Oceanside wrote on Oct 3, 2008 11:59 AM:Kudos to the Border Patrol for catching these guys and intercepting this contraband. What is disturbing is the level of sophistication these suspects used, and it makes one wonder what's getting through that they miss. These two suspects obviously either have money or connections, considering the amount of drugs in their possession, the type/model of vehicle used, and the fact that they were in here legally.
Last night on the local evening news there was a story about a 'new’ port of entry at the border. For years we've had nothing but problems with 'ports of entry' between Mexico and us, with the human and contraband/drug smuggling that continues to flow in from Mexico. And now we want to build another entry point for this garbage?
It's time to look long and hard at our so-called neighbors to the south with a very skeptical eye and not build any more links between us and them.
With the rampant violence, mayhem, and utter chaos that is occurring in Mexico and the border region, we don't need any more ties with them. In fact, we need to control the 'entry points' we already have and build an impenetrable fence and wall along our entire southern border and to thoroughly screen everyone and everything that comes in from Mexico, period. Enough is enough.

Too bad Americans weren't so xenophobic and ignorant about the outside world and quick to blame foreigners for everything.
The Demand wrote on Oct 3, 2008 1:02 PM:If there were not a huge demand in the United States for DRUGS there would probably not be as much corruption and drugs as there is today in America. Stop the Demand and you will stop the problem.
Its about time... wrote on Oct 3, 2008 1:03 PM:the Border Patrol is being allowed to do their job!!! Good Call!!! I agree with most just think of all that is actually getting through. We need to continue to tighten our borders and keep the drugs, illegals and terrorists out of our country. If we have to have a passport to cross into Mexico (which I will not use mine for...)it should be the same crossing into the United States. No paperwork, No entry. BTW not all Americans are on drugs or even demand cocaine!!!

Who cares how it is spelled in Spanish; this is America. One of the current problems is that most of the current crop of sixth graders are still speaking Spanish, and holding back those that can speak (and write) English, the language of the land.
Maybe you were just trying to impress us with your command of Spanish. Sad thing is, nobody cares......
Great job, BP! And thanks for the history lesson, "Always on duty"!
Gil wrote on Oct 3, 2008 5:14 PM:I think I have figured it out. Since neither presidential candidate will openly say they support tougher enforcement of illegal immigration, they are purposely trying to drive our economy into a sever recession. When you hear them speak and since they both voted for the bailout, it is clear they favor recession. I think that both oppose illegal-immigration, and they are trying to rid our nation of illegals through an economic slowdown. Kudos to both men for being such great leaders and having such wonderful vision.

JUSTCURIOUS wrote on Oct 4, 2008 7:32 PM:What probable cause did the Border Patrol have to send the car for a second inspection in the first place? The article states the two "mexican men were traveling in the country LEGALLY, and were going to visit relatives in Rancho Cucamonga" During the second inspection of the vehicle, drug-searching dogs were called in. I may be playing the devils advocate here, I am not by any means advocating illegal drugs, I am just wondering what legal reason the Border Patrol had to search the car after determining its occupants were in fact legal. Where they speeding? No...They were stopped due to racial profiling and what...thought that no legal Mexican should be driving a Mercedes? Granted, the seizure of the cocaine is a good thing, the violation of civil rights in order to find that cocaine seems suspect in the very least.
Karl wrote on Oct 4, 2008 8:12 PM:Gimme a break JUSTCURIOUS @ 7:32 PM. Don't you think that BP Agents take courses in what to look for? Maybe the guys acted nervous. Maybe someone ratted on them. Maybe they showed signs of being on the drugs, did you think of that? "the violation of civil rights in order to find that cocaine seems suspect in the very least". I guess in your namby pamby world the perps would have to tell the BP Agents that they were carrying.
Dennis wrote on Oct 4, 2008 8:18 PM:To: Just Curious,
Can you say "They kind of stood out" If your leagal you are a suspect like everybody till proven innocent, so you co-operate and go to 2nd inspection spot and if your really Innocent you won't mind or go into a tantrum about it, you just obey. And they don't find 32lbs of coke hahaha!! suprised they didn't turn and make a run for it !!
Roberto1 wrote on Oct 4, 2008 8:23 PM:To just curious, due process is back before terrorism and so are individual rights. (democracy is dead) With that said, drugs are driven by supply and demand. Americans have a large appetite for illegal drugs. Interdiction is only a small part of the illegal drug problem. As long as there are people willing to pay, they will keep being smuggled into the country
Border search authority wrote on Oct 4, 2008 8:45 PM:A U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer’s border search authority is derived from federal statutes and regulations, including 19 C.F.R. 162.6, which states that, “All persons, baggage and merchandise arriving in the Customs territory of the United States from places outside thereof are liable to inspection by a CBP officer.” Unless exempt by diplomatic status, all persons entering the United States, including U.S. citizens, are subject to examination and search by CBP officers.
Greg in Oceanside wrote on Oct 4, 2008 9:41 PM:While I'm concerned about the pervasive human and drug smuggling, I'm wondering why the NCT hasn't had any news about the rampant murders (and mutilated bodies) that are occurring in Mexico, most of which is tied to the drug war?
Karl wrote on Oct 4, 2008 10:22 PM:Greg, I was thinking the same thing. Why is this story being buried?
To just curious wrote on Oct 28, 2008 12:27 AM:Take a little time and learn the law. No "probable cause" is nesessary to refer a vehicle to Secondary Inspection. The BP only needs "mere suspicion". The problem with people like you is that your mouth starts running in the conspiracy mode instead of you doing a little research and speaking with some knowledge.
Typical Liberal. My rights, my rights. Meanwhile, your kids school is full of illegal drugs.....nice.
To Border search authority wrote on Oct 30, 2008 4:01 PM:That does not apply to Internal Checkpoints. That authority is only for entry from outside of the United States.
The Border Patrol is under CBP, which is under DHS, but are not CBP officers, they are Patrol Agents.
