Temecula libraries offer activities

The Californian

TEMECULA ---- Friends of Temecula Libraries will hold its annual sidewalk sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Grace Mellman Library Bookstore.

There will be a large array of books and Bag Your Own Bargains.

The Friends Bookstore is located behind the Grace Mellman Library, 41000 County Center Drive. For information, call Stan Williams at 699-1056.

---- Patchwork Players: Ghost Stories and Not Too Scary Stories, 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 22. Stories by the Patchwork Players that will put listeners on the edge of their seat. Free tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the program begins. Ages 3 and older.

---- Movie Night: "Disturbia," 4 p.m. Oct. 15.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

Astronomy group to meet

TEMECULA ---- Dennis Mammana will share his experiences leading stargazers on trips around the world when Temecula Valley Astronomers meet from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the Rancho California Water District.

Mammana has led trips to view and photograph some of the most remarkable spectacles in including eclipses, the Aurora Borealis and comets, for the past two decades. He'll offer tips on how amateurs can partake in such cosmic adventures.

Wildomar seniors to gather

WILDOMAR ---- The Wildomar Senior Association will meet for its monthly potluck and program at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Canyon Mobile Home clubhouse.

Azusa Pacific to host meeting

MURRIETA ---- The Azusa Pacific University Murrieta Regional Center will host a free graduate/credential information meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The APU Murrieta Regional Center offers programs to obtain a variety of credentials, a Master of Arts degree in education or leadership and organizational studies and a combined credential and masters program.

Empty cradle group to meet

TEMECULA ---- Empty Cradle, a support group for parents who have experienced the loss of a child to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death, will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Mary Phillips Senior Center.

The group will hold its annual memorial service in honor of Infant Loss Awareness Month. There also will be refreshments and sharing circles.

The group meets the second Wednesday of each month at the senior center, 41845 Sixth St. For information, call 686-5677.

Deadline nears for Gardner writing contest

TEMECULA ---- Friday is the deadline to enter the Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Writing contest.

Held in conjunction with the seventh annual Erle Stanley Gardner Mystery Weekend, Nov. 7 and 8 in Old Town, amateur writers are encouraged to submit stories of the mystery genre that include references to historical buildings and/or people, living or dead, of the Temecula Valley.

Holiday boutique upcoming in Redhawk

TEMECULA ---- The fifth annual Redhawk Holiday Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, featuring fall and Christmas decor, children's items, furniture, hand-sewn items, personalized gifts and jewelry.

The boutique is presented by My Sticky Designs and will be at the home of Julie Pearcy, 45897 Corte Orizaba. White chocolate caramel corn and hot cider will be served.

Temecula Live plans auditions

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Live! Country Music Review will hold auditions Saturday.

The third annual show offers performers the opportunity to showcase their talent in the music hall tradition, backed up by country band The Ranch Rockers.

Auditions will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater Mercantile Room. Producers are looking for singers of all ages to perform in three shows, Jan. 23 and 24.

They also will audition country-style variety performers, comedians, musicians and artists interested in showcasing original material.

Relay for Life Saturday in Canyon Lake

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held Saturday and Sunday at Canyon Lake Middle School.

The relay is a 24-hour event designed to celebrate survivorship, remember loved ones who died of cancer and raise money to find a cure.

Quarter horse events upcoming

TEMECULA ---- The SCRCHA Saddle Shoot Out and CPHA-AQHA Introductory Show, American Quarter Horse Association-approved events, are scheduled in Temecula.

The Saddle Shoot Out will be Saturday at Casner Ranch and the Introductory Show will be Oct. 12 at Southern California Equestrian Center.

American Quarter Horse shows test horses' ability in dozens of classes.

Casner Ranch is at Anza and De Portola roads. Southern California Equestrian Center is located on Los Caballos Road off Highway 79 South. For information on either event, visit www.aqha.com.

TIP plans training

TEMECULA ---- Trauma Intervention Programs is looking for volunteers to be part of a team of citizen volunteers trained to provide emotional first aid and practical support to victims of traumatic events.

TIP volunteers are called to emergency scenes by police, firefighters and hospital personnel in Canyon Lake, Hemet, Lake Elsinore, Menifee, Murrieta, Perris, Sun City, Temecula, Wildomar, and surrounding areas.

An orientation and training class is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct 15. Training consists of four additional weeknights and three weekend days, with graduation Oct. 25 .

Osmond to speak at family summit

MORENO VALLEY ---- Alan Osmond, the oldest member of the singing Osmond family, will speak at the State of the Family Summit from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Moreno Valley Conference Center.

Osmond, a multiple sclerosis survivor, and father of eight boys, will speak about the importance of families and how communities can strengthen them.

During the event, Judge Paul Zellerbach will be honored as the first recipient of the Peggy Fouke-Wortz "Champion of the Family" award. Zellerbach was selected for his dedication to the community and for his work as chairman of the association's board.

The award was established in honor of Fouke-Wortz, who died earlier this year at the age of 89. The philanthropist had a commitment to serve the forgotten and disadvantaged members of the community.

The cost is $35 per person. Proceeds will go to Family Service Association.

Applications available for parade

MURRIETA ----- Applications are available for Murrieta's Veteran's Day parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 11.

The parade is open to bands, floats and groups with a patriotic theme.

Nonprofits sought for festival

TEMECULA ----- Nonprofit community service organizations are invited to participate in the city's Halloween Family carnival from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at Ronald Reagan Sports Park.

Groups may request a 10-foot, by 10-foot game booth for no charge. The group is responsible for providing table, chairs, canopies and game supplies. The city will provide candy and prizes.

Vendor space offered

MURRIETA ---- Vendor spaces are available for two events in Murrieta.

A Holiday Gift Boutique will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 14 at the Murrieta Senior Center and the Festival under the Stars Craft Fair will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6 at Town Square Park.

Both events will include vendors selling homemade goods and direct sale company items.

Booth space for the Holiday Gift Boutique costs $7. Space for Festival Under the Stars is $30.

Mountain Rescue Unit holding auction

Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit is holding a raffle for a weekend golf package for two in order to raise operational funds.

The grand prize includes two nights and two rounds of golf at the Warner Springs Ranch. Second prize is children's golf lessons with PGA pro Mike Raschko.

Funds raised will go toward operational expenses and the training on a large group of members who have recently joined the team.

RMRU is a volunteer, nonprofit, mountain search and rescue team.

Raffle tickets, at $5 apiece or $20 for five, can be purchased online at www.rmru.org.

Temecula school candidates to gather

TEMECULA ---- Candidates for the Temecula Valley Unified School District Board of Trustees will participate in a forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Temecula City Hall.

Ten candidates are vying for two open seats, vacated when incumbents Barbara Tooker and Stewart Morris chose not to seek re-election.

The Temecula Valley Council PTA has partnered with the League of Women Voters of Southwest Riverside County to sponsor the forum. Each candidate will present an opening statement and field questions collected from the audience. Each member of the panel also will respond to questions submitted in advance by the PTA. Charolette Fox, president of the League of Women Voters, will serve as moderator.

Murrieta council forum slated

MURRIETA ---- The second of two town hall meetings featuring candidates for Murrieta City Council will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m.Oct 15 at Vista Murrieta High School.

Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates at the forum, sponsored by Murrieta Unified Political Action Committee and Murrieta Temecula Republican Assembly Club.

Candidate interviews available on cable

LAKE ELSINORE ---- Voters in Time Warner Cable's service area will be able to watch interviews with Lake Elsinore City Council candidates beginning Friday.

Time Warner will offer one-on-one, in-studio interviews with the candidates, who will be asked the same questions in the same order, and given the opportunity to make a closing statement.

Interviews will be available at no charge to digital customers via Video on Demand through Election Day, Nov. 4.
