CHARGERS: 'This is not fun': Bolts back to searching for answers after loss to Dolphins

MIAMI ---- In the corridor beneath Dolphin Stadium, there are signs indicating the whereabouts of "Dark Room 1" and "Dark Room 2." Oddly, the Chargers walked past both locations and continued into a different room to shower and dress after Sunday's game.

One of the dark rooms would have been a more apt place to dwell in their disappointment because the Chargers were in the dark all afternoon in terms of how to deal with the Miami Dolphins, the worst team in the NFL just last season.

The label of laughingstock will no longer be associated with the Dolphins after they slapped a 17-10 loss on the Chargers before an announced crowd of 65,063. Miami (2-2) accumulated nearly twice as many yards and controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes against a team regularly mentioned as one of the NFL's best.

But perhaps that tag should be removed, too. The Chargers (2-3) didn't look like an elite team in losing to the Dolphins, who ran roughshod over New England two weeks earlier in their most recent game.

"They beat two teams that were supposed to be two of the better teams in the conference," quarterback Philip Rivers said. "Whether that's the case still remains to be seen.

"It's certainly tough. Not that we didn't think that the Dolphins were capable, but this is one week that we expected to win. It was obvious they expected to win the way they came out and played. They whipped us."

Left tackle Marcus McNeill and tight end Antonio Gates both said the Dolphins were much more intense when the game began.

"Coach (Norv Turner) said it great ---- they came out like it was a playoff game," McNeill said.

Said Gates: "You can't take a win for granted. You can't take a team for granted. We don't play them every year and we played a team that wanted to win a football game, and it showed."

The Dolphins held the Chargers to 202 yards while piling up 390 of their own. Second-quarter touchdowns by Ronnie Brown (125 yards rushing) and former Charger Greg Camarillo (six receptions) gave Miami a 17-3 halftime lead.

The defeat left the Chargers two games behind Denver in the AFC West race. The Broncos defeated Tampa Bay on Sunday.

Think 2-3 is dismal? If not for a superb final quarter against Oakland seven days earlier, the Chargers would be sitting at 1-4.

"This is not fun," said running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who rushed for just 35 yards. "This is not the kind of football we want to play. We're inconsistent and we need to find some consistency with our football team."

The Chargers have been consistent in starting slow, and they kept that streak intact Sunday. Of course, they failed to ramp things up in the second half this time.

Despite the lethargy, the Chargers had a chance to tie the game on the first play of the fourth quarter. But a fourth-and-goal run by Tomlinson off the left side from the 1-yard line went nowhere, as several Dolphins ---- most noticeably Vonnie Holliday and Channing Crowder ---- stuffed the play and kept the score at 17-10.

"You have to have confidence to run that play," McNeill said. "Our coach had confidence to run that play, and we let him down. That's on us.

"When you have fourth-and-goal like that, you have to be wanting to punch it in."

Miami certainly wanted things more all afternoon. The Dolphins answered Nate Kaeding's 34-yard first-quarter field goal with a 47-yarder by Dan Carpenter.

Then Chad Pennington (22-of-29, 228 yards) found Camarillo, who beat cornerback Quentin Jammer, on a 17-yard scoring pass to give Miami a 10-3 lead with 5:25 left in the first half.

The Chargers gave the ball back to the Dolphins just 64 seconds later, and Miami drove 79 yards in 11 plays, capped by Brown's 5-yard touchdown run to make it 17-3.

The Chargers cut the deficit in half when Rivers hit Chris Chambers on a 17-yard scoring pass with 3:13 left.

Chargers rookie Jacob Hester forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, but it was all for naught when Tomlinson was stuffed at the goal line.

The Chargers had the ball just two more times ---- twice giving the ball back to the Dolphins after four plays. The latter time occurred after they took over with 7:33 left and Rivers alerted the offense to the dire circumstances.

"We talked in the huddle and said ... 'This (is) it right here. We may not get another great opportunity, so we've got to go right now and score,' " Rivers said. "We didn't do it and we didn't get it back."

The Dolphins took over at their own 15 and killed the final 5:55 of the game with a 14-play, 60-yard drive that included four third-down conversions and ended with two kneel-downs by Pennington.

"We just have to play better and execute better," Rivers said. "Individuals, all of us, have got to step it up and play better. Collectively, we have got to go out there and get it done."

This game was winnable but the desire was missing. Where was that stepped up pass rush from last week? Or maybe Miami's better than everyone thought...I think so.

Sit LT out and leave the driving to Sproles and Tolbert. Be more creative Norv. Everyone seems to know what you're going to do next.

Hart stopped off in Stupid Town before the game. He blew that coverage and got flagged on 3 and 9 when the Fish were deep near their own end zone (after SD's failed 4th goal try).

Funny how former Chargers traded or cut seem to come back and bite us in the A$$? Seems fitting that the Bolts management got what they deserve for letting talent go. Or are they correctly evaluating what they have? Time for an investigation!!

The way the Chargers are being coached now as to when you know who was head coach (14-2) and Wade ran the D, it's like the keys to the Lexus were given to Hillbillys to go four wheelin' in Ocotillo or Glamis.

Yup the Tuna knows his stuff. San Diego could never or would never get a guy like him. He knows talent and can build successful winners. Guess the Fish have our number and that's that.

Go Bolts!

GMAN wrote on Oct 6, 2008 6:51 AM:The lack of DESIRE was the key to this loss and DESIRE was the key to Miami's win. Let's take a look at what happened:

The Charger's defense, once again, has been CONSISTENT.....gave up 390+ yards again and again. CONSISTENTLY using zone coverage, CONSISTENTLY not sacking the QB, CONSISTENTLY not keying on BROWN when they ran the Wildcat formation..unbelievable! DESIRE.......very pathetic!

Now the offense: Unbelievable that Rivers overthrew a wide open Vincent Jackson (he had his DB beat by 10 YARDS!) tHIS WOULD HAVE BEEN an easy TD.

Sure miss CAM CAMERON AS OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR. The play calling was horrendous. I bet Cam would have called a bootleg, or at least a play action (on the 4th and goal) instead of running LT up the middle. Don't ypu think the Miami D was keying on LT? Easy call to make.

Management, especially Smith letting Turner go to Atlanta. He would have been the Charger's best back this year.

Solution: Kick the players in the rear to motivate them. One on one pass defense. Blitz more..what have you got to loose? Move RIVERA TO DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR and can Cotrell. Bring back Cam Cameron as Offensive coordinator.

Finally, pray for a miracle..the bolts are facing the Patriots next week.

Bro its' time to stop making excuses that they came out with no desire. I said it before they should catch (hopefully) a little fire but if they have no desire by the fifth game of the season why are they playing the game anymore. Call it as it is...the Bolts got beat not because they lacked desire but because Miami was the better team.

LT used to jump over the top on goal line plays..yesterday he ran with his head down. I am a huge fan of LT, but it looks like his heart is not into playing football. Clinton " I wish I had a" Hart is terrible. Can't tackle, can't cover anyone and makes dumb plays (penalties) when he is out there. Time for a change. The apple doesnt fall far from the tree wrote on Oct 6, 2008 9:09 AM:As stated before, I stand by my judgment as a loyal Chargers fan - stop thinking about the Superbowl and win game by game. The Dolphins' convincing win against New England should have put something in our players' head; obviously it was running a country club style offense with no discipline.....Sparano is a pupil of Parcells, a disciplinarian - and it works. Just like "Marty-ball" - it pays off in a couple of years when the players mature and see the strategy involved in winning a game.
Talent? Stop reading the AP headlines and watch some other teams with "less talent" play ball, and couple that with the fact that EVERY COACH IN THE NFL knows this talent! It's called adjustments! How many of the past Superbowl teams had a GREAT lineup of players? Denver is clearly winning the AFC West, and well deserved, albeit the loss to Kansas City. The NFC for the first time in a while is looking ridiculously good, in particular the NFC East. Bandwagon fans need to watch the draft and stop expecting so much and understand the importance and role of a head coach, and staff....Then this makes clear sense.

Last year, the Chargers had a coaching transition that created problems but this year they simply flat out dont look anything like the team Marty left. Jamaal Williams looks old and was consistently pushed around. Thats a big part of the defenses problems and so is the play of the ILBs. The safeties arent that good either. So far, Weddell stinks.

But it starts up front and the Chargers arent that good in the trenches on either side of the ball.

You asked for change when Marty was 86'd and now you got what you wished for. Lots of rival fans told you all this when Norv was hired.

The team is taking on Norvs personality.

Thats not good for Charger fans but its what is happening whether you want to admit it or not.

The Raiders may have had this coaching riff but they are far from being the mess they were 2 years ago and are loaded with young talent.

But you cant put yourself up there with the elite teams anymore so talking about the Raiders that way makes you look silly when youre not that much better than they are anymore.

Youre not going to the SB this year and youve got holes everywhere not to mention aging players.

The window closed already but Charger fans wont admit it.

I dont talk about it because theres nothing to talk about this year.

But why are Charger fans still talking like they are an elite team when they are OBVIOUSLY not?

Neither team is going anywhere this year.

However, youre getting old and the Raiders are young. You arent going to get that SB win to rub in my face. Nothing else matters as we all learned in 2002 that if you dont win the SB, youre just another loser. I learned that from Charger fans who now want to change the rules and brag about beating a division rival in a year when neither went anywhere. The story here is how the team many thought would be going to the SB stinks as bad as anyone.

The Raiders now have a statistically superior defense and that couldnt be said the past 5 years.

Thats the first step to reclaiming our dominance.

Stay tuned!

The SD Super Bowl dream is over so now they want to talk about meaningless division games.

Oh well, they need something to cheer about so knock yourself out.

No SB win to rub in our faces.

But since the past ( 5 years) is now in play, lets talk about ther past 45 years.

See?

You talk about the past too but you want to pinch it off at 5 years.

I wonder why?
