PREP GIRLS GOLF: Poway beats rival for the second time

FAIRBANKS RANCH ---- The Poway High girls golf team kept its now-interleague rivalry against Torrey Pines alive at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club on Monday afternoon, defeating the Falcons 209-213.

The Titans (10-0) have handed the Falcons (9-2) both of their losses this season. Poway beat Torrey Pines 202-211 on Sept. 16 at Stone Ridge Country Club.

"Torrey Pines has always been great competitors," Poway coach Karen Brannon said. "We took them by nine strokes at our place. We knew it would be tough today. It was a great team effort."

Torrey Pines was in the Palomar League with Poway last season before league realignment moved the Falcons into the Avocado League.

"We always know that we are going to see each other, whether it's in the playoffs, at CIF or regionals," Brannon said. "Often we're at state together. We always respect them for their competitiveness and always look forward to playing them."

Poway's Annie McSorley and Torrey Pines' Rae Chung were co-medalists, each carding a 2-over-par 38. Chung injured her wrist a week before the match and didn't resume playing until last Sunday. McSorley said she had her own problems going into the match.

"When I went to the driving range today, I had a really bad swing problem," McSorley said. "I didn't even think about it when I stepped on the first hole."

Poway's Brittany Mai finished with a 39. Sara and Ellen Handa shot 43 and 44, respectively.

"Our team has been working really hard," McSorley said. "We love playing. Even though our team is supposed to have a non-practice day, we go to the course anyway just for fun."

Torrey Pines' Sara Baek finished a stroke behind Chung with a 39. Danna Lau carded a 43 to round out the top three scores for the Falcons.

Chung said whether the match is in league or out of league, playing Poway is always an enjoyable experience.

"Even though we are rivals, we're still friends with each other," Chung said. "It's always fun to play with them."
