Speechcraft workshop offered
RAMONA ---- The Ramona Toastmasters Club will offer a speechcraft workshop from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 9-30, in the meeting room at the Ramona Library, 1406 Montecito Road. Preschool to hold annual craft show
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Hope Christian Preschool will hold its annual Hearts-to-You Craft Show from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 9; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 10; and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 11 at Hope United Methodist Church, 16550 Bernardo Heights Parkway. Church to hold craft fair
RANCHO BERNARDO ---- San Rafael Church will hold an arts and crafts fair from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 10 and 11 and 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 12 at the church, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive. The event will include crafts, a bake sale, raffles and a snack cafe.
Free composting workshop set
ESCONDIDO ---- A free composting workshop will be offered from 8:30-10 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Escondido Community Garden.
The workshop will be staffed by master composters and will include instruction and demonstration in the building and maintenance of a backyard compost pile and worm bin. No registration required; rain cancels.
The Escondido Community Garden is north of Highway 78 on Centre City Parkway. Park behind the garden in the cul-de-sac at Morning View Drive and Lincoln Avenue.
Composting workshops are held quarterly and hosted by the Escondido Community Garden and the city of Escondido. Call (760) 839-6216.
Library to host 'sugar skulls' workshop
RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- A free "Mexican Sugar Skulls" workshop will be offered from 6:30-8 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Rancho Penasquitos Library, 13330 Salmon River Road.
Sugar skulls are a traditional folk art from Central and Southern Mexico used to celebrate Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). The skulls are made of a sugar mixture that has been pressed into molds and then dried. The dried sugar skulls are decorated with icing and sometimes non-edible items such as colored foil, feathers or sequins.

Book club to meet Oct. 14
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Public Library's 2nd Tuesday Book Club will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 in Turrentine Room at the main library, 239 S. Kalmia St. This month's selection is "Evidence of Things Unseen" by Marianne Wiggins.
"Birth of Venus" by Sarah Dunant will be discussed at the Dec. 9 meeting, and "House of Mirth" by Edith Wharton will be featured Jan. 13. The club will not meet Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

Have breakfast with 'The Littlest Pumpkin'
SAN MARCOS ---- Families are invited to wear their costumes and enjoy a pancake breakfast with the "Littlest Pumpkin" from 7:30-11 a.m. Oct. 18 at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Center Drive.
Breakfast will be pancakes, eggs, sausage and orange juice or coffee. Bring quarters for carnival games geared toward preschool/elementary school-age children.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $4 for children and can be purchased in advance or at the door. Proceeds will benefit the city of San Marcos' Raggedy Ann & Andy Preschoolers Program. Call (760) 744-9000.
Free hikes offered at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO ---- Free guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least two liters of water; wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths under 18 must be with an adult. No pets. Unless otherwise noted, meet at the La Honda Drive entrance. A shuttle with handicapped accessibility runs Sundays.

-- 6:30 a.m. Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31: "Beat the Heat Mystery Walk." Beat the heat by joining naturalist Kathleen Flanagan's early morning hike. Based on the group's make-up, she will select a trail for a fast-paced, strenuous walk of about 7 miles.
-- 3:30 p.m. Oct. 7 and 21: "Fitness Hike." Enjoy an afternoon fitness hike led by naturalist Rita Ospelt.
-- 6 p.m. Oct. 7 and 21: "Stroll Around the Ranch." Naturalist Michelle Capodice will lead a leisurely hike to the Ranch House and talk about the local plants and animals.
-- 8:30 a.m. Oct. 11, "Giants Prayed for Rain." Naturalist Dorothy Klitzing will talk about the ancient peoples of the area, including those who painted the giant cave murals of Baja, California Sur, Mexico, on this moderately strenuous 2.65-mile hike.
-- 9 a.m. Oct. 11, "Ramble on the Ranch." Join naturalist Paul Crouthamel for a fun, moderate 3-plus-mile hike on the Boulder Loop Trail.
-- 9 a.m. Oct. 12, "Daley Ranch Scenery." A diverse plant population and expansive views are waiting to be enjoyed on naturalist Rick Paul's occasionally strenuous 4-mile hike. Meet at the Cougar Pass parking lot.

POWAY ---- The Poway Bocce Club hosted an open house tournament recently at Poway Community Park. Out of 12 teams entered, Poway took first place for the second year in a row. The Poway Bocce Club will retain the Traveling Trophy. The club thanks its volunteers.

Low-cost grocery program available
POWAY ---- Local residents can get low-cost groceries once a month through Poway Share. Most food packs include meat and vegetables; a vegetable pack is also available. The program now offers a package of 100 percent certified all-organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Prices range from $6 to $31 per pack.
Place orders between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays at the Poway Senior Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive, or place orders and pay for them online at http://www.powayshare.com. This month's orders must be placed by Oct. 13. Distribution will be Oct. 25.

Kumeyaay-Ipai center dedication set
POWAY ---- Dedication of the Education Center at the Kumeyaay-Ipai Interpretive Center at Pauwai will be held at 9 a.m. Oct. 9 at the center, 13104 Silver Lake Drive.
The brief ceremony will include presentations and recognitions for the project and access to the center's opening exhibit, "Poway's First People: Art and Culture." The exhibit features artifacts of the site, replica items of Kumeyaay daily living, and a photographic exhibition of North County rock art still visible today. Full tours of the facility and grounds will be hosted by the Friends of the Kumeyaay at 10:45 a.m.

Lions Club plans fashion show fundraiser

ESCONDIDO ---- An Elks "Hoop Shoot" free-throw contest for boys and girls ages 8 to 13 will be held at 8 a.m. Nov. 8 in the gymnasium at Orange Glen High School.
