LIFE at MiraCosta to meet
OCEANSIDE ---- LIFE at MiraCosta, a lifelong learning group, will meet at 1 p.m. Oct. 10 in Room 1068 at MiraCosta College, 1 Barnard Drive. DeWitt Drury, LIFE member, will discuss his lifelong interest in American poets in "American Poetry 1812 to Mid-20th Century." He will read poems and provide comments of poetry from Robert Frost, Carl Sandberg, Ogden Nash and others.

Artists named for beautification program
OCEANSIDE ---- The Oceanside Arts Commission has announced five local artists have been selected for phase one of the city's utility box beautification program: Sossity Corby, Jay Crawford, Greg Scargall, Marie Townley and Jasmine A. Vowels.
The theme for this phase is "Oceanside Harbor Artwalk: Heritage and History." The boxes will be painted at the north end of Oceanside Harbor within 30 days. The next phase of the project is scheduled to begin for new submissions in January. Call (760) 435-5606.
Estate planning workshop set
OCEANSIDE ---- Sponsored by the American Heart Association, estate planning and probate attorney Marilyn Shea will conduct a series of free seminars discussing trusts, wills and life income gifts. Golf fundraiser to benefit hospice
VISTA ---- Hospice of the North Coast will celebrate its 28 years of service at the eighth annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser benefit beginning at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at the Shadowridge Golf Course and Country Club, 1980 Gateway Drive.
The event, sponsored by Good & Roberts, Inc., will include carts, green fees, lunch, drinks on course, dinner, access to the live auction, raffles and tee prizes, and is the largest fundraiser for Hospice of the North Coast, which provides comprehensive, individualized care for the terminally ill and their families. Beginning computer class offered
VISTA ---- OASIS will offer a beginning computer class from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 13-22 at the McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive. Students will learn basic terminology while practicing keyboarding and mouse skills, games, exchanging e-mail, surfing the net and basic work processing. Vista Lions accepting pageant applications
VISTA ---- The Pride of Vista Lions Club is accepting application for the annual Miss Pride of Vista and Miss Teen Tri-City scholarship pageants, to be held at 6 p.m. March 14, 20009, at Madison Middle School. 4930 Lake Blvd. The theme is "Hooray for Hollywood."
Miss Pride of Vista 2009 will receive a $2,000 scholarship and Miss Teen Tri-City will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Each princess receives a $100 scholarship and prizes valued at more than $600. All contestants receive a prize package valued at more than $250.

Faith Lutheran kids sell calendars
VISTA ---- The Faith Lutheran Church High School Youth Group is holding its annual Calendar Fundraiser. Funds raised will go toward supporting the group's trip to the 2010 Lutheran National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. While there, 18 members of the youth group will join more than 40,000 other high school students from across the nation in a week of helping with the restoration of neighborhoods, schools and community centers in New Orleans while learning ways to help their communities when they return home. Tennis courts to be dedicated
CARLSBAD ---- The public is invited to join the mayor and city council for the Poinsettia Park Tennis Courts Dedication Ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 15 at 6600 Hidden Valley Road. Courts will be available for open play following the event.

Seniors hit the waves with 'Gondola Getaway’
CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Senior Center will host one of its regular Senior Safari trips for adults ages 50 and up this month. “A Gondola Getaway” will be offered from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 9, starting at the center, 799 Pine Ave. -Activities will include lunch followed by singing gondola rides across Alamitos Bay in Long Beach. All Senior Safari excursions require a certain amount of walking. Certain programs may have specialized refund policies. Cost is $75 for residents, $85 for nonresidents. MS bike fundraiser to add new event
CARLSBAD ---- The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has added a new third route to its 26th annual Land Rover Miramar Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour, a two-day, cycling fundraiser, Oct. 11 and 12. More than 2,200 riders are expected to peddle either 100 or 150 miles from Irvine in Orange County to the Westfield Plaza Camino Real shopping center Oct. 11, and then from the mall in Carlsbad to Mission Bay on Oct. 12. In addition, the National MS Society is expecting about another 300 cyclists, including local radio and TV personalities, will ride in its new, shorter 30-mile ride that starts and ends in Carlsbad on Oct. 11. The new 30-mile ride is dubbed a “Cycle Circus” because rest stops along a coastal route through Solana Beach will feature circus troupe performers, and prizes will be awarded for best costume, oldest bike and slowest rider.
A minimum donation of $400 is required to ride either the 30- 100 or 150-mile route, and the minimum age limit for riders is 12 years old. To register, visit www.biketofinishMS.com.
Senior center to host eye screenings
CARLSBAD ---- Melissa Kleman and the staff of Innovision Eye Care Center will perform free eye health screenings from 9-10:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Carlsbad Senior Center, 799 Pine Ave. Attendees can gain awareness of their eye health, existence of glaucoma or cataracts, plus have a chance to talk with the surgical counselor. Shelter seeks food donations for pets
RANCHO SANTA FE ---- The AniMeals program at the Helen Woodward Animal Center is seeking pet food donations, particularly senior food for both dogs and cats. AniMeals currently works with Meals-on-Wheels and other organizations to provide free pet food for the dogs and cats of elderly or disabled people throughout San Diego County. Donations can be dropped off at the Helen Woodward Animal Center, 6461 El Apajo Road, or in the AniMeals bins at participating Petco stores. Volunteers can also hold their own AniMeals pet food drive through their office, family, school, church or temple group, scout troop, or civic organization.
