ENCINITAS: Aceti drops out of council race

By North County Times | Tuesday, October 7, 2008 2:11 PM PDT

Betsy Aceti has dropped out of the Encinitas City Council race.

ENCINITAS ---- Betsy Aceti announced Tuesday afternoon that she was dropping out of the race for the City Council, saying that career opportunities preclude her from working on the campaign trail.

Aceti said an important opportunity had arisen with respect to a film project she had been working on for more than 10 years. She said she has recently joined forces with a major production company that has the financing and backing to make her project a reality.

"I am also very committed to my family, and they have been very supportive of my campaign and my desire to serve on the Encinitas City Council," she wrote in an e-mail to the North County Times on Tuesday. "However, I will not be able to run an effective campaign, increase my commitment to the film project and spend quality time with my family."

Though she has withdrawn from the race, Aceti's name will still appear on the Nov. 4 ballot because election materials have already been printed.

In her announcement, Aceti did not endorse any other candidate vying for three open seats on the council, but said she hoped to perhaps run again in the future.

A self-described volunteer and homemaker, Aceti is married to Steve Aceti, executive director of the nonprofit Encinitas-based California Coastal Coalition.

The vote dilution arising from a cluttered field further increases the incumbents' advantage.

Betsy Aceti seemed personable, but I felt there was a conflict of interest there with her husband's lobbying firm. I wish her success at her new endeavors.

The candidate with the smallest number of first-choice votes is eliminated first, and his/her votes are reallocated according to those voters' respective second choices. The process repeats until the number of candidates left standing equals the number of seats available.
