CHARGERS: Scouting report ---- vs. New England Patriots

By MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | Tuesday, October 7, 2008 6:09 PM PDT

Kickoff: 5:15 p.m. Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.

Series: New England leads 20-14-2. The Patriots defeated the Chargers twice last season in Foxborough, Mass. New England routed the Chargers 38-14 in the regular season and defeated the Chargers 21-12 in the AFC Championship Game.

Player to watch: WR Randy Moss

Fully established as one of the NFL's top receivers, Moss is adjusting to a season without QB Tom Brady. He has 17 receptions for 274 yards and two touchdowns, modest numbers for him, and that's after a 111-yard day against San Francisco on Sunday. His 66-yard touchdown reception against the 49ers was the 126th of his 11-year career. The 100-yard performance was the 57th of his career; he's third all-time in that category behind Jerry Rice (76) and Marvin Harrison (59). Moss also has played for Minnesota (1998-2004) and Oakland (2005-06). The six-time Pro Bowler has caught 791 career passes for 12,467 yards. He had a superb season in 2007 after the Patriots acquired him from the Raiders, setting an NFL record with 23 touchdown receptions while catching 98 passes for a team-record 1,493 yards. He topped 100 yards in nine games.

Offense

With Brady sidelined for the season with a knee injury, the Patriots aren't close to being the offensive juggernaut they were last season when they set an NFL record by scoring 589 points in the regular season ---- an average of 36.8 points per contest. Through four games this season, New England has scored 79 points, an average of 19.8 points. QB Matt Cassel has replaced Brady and has completed a high percentage (67.3) of passes, but has the same number of touchdown passes (three) as interceptions. WR Wes Welker, waived by the Chargers in 2004, has a team-best 27 receptions, but is averaging just 9.3 yards per reception. Welker set a franchise record last season with 112 receptions. New England's running game has sputtered (only a 3.7 average per carry) behind the three-back committee of Sammy Morris (143 yards, 3.3 average), LaMont Jordan (106 yards, 4.4) and Laurence Maroney (93 yards, 3.3), and its pass protection has been shaky despite having three Pro Bowlers on its offensive line ---- LT Matt Light, LG Logan Mankins and C Dan Koppen. After allowing just 21 sacks in the regular season a year ago, the Patriots have already allowed 16 in four games.

Defense

Veteran S Rodney Harrison continues to thrive in his sixth season with the Patriots and is the only player in NFL history with at least 30 career interceptions (he got No. 34 last Sunday against San Francisco) and 30 career sacks (he has 30 1/2). The Chargers thought the future Hall of Famer was running out of gas in 2002, so they released him after nine seasons with the club. Second-year S Brandon Meriweather has two of the Patriots' five interceptions this season. The Patriots lost top cover corner Asante Samuel to free agency after last season. Former Oceanside High and Chargers standout Junior Seau is no longer with the team, but the Patriots still employ exceptional LBs Mike Vrabel (two sacks this season after a career-high 12 1/2 in 2007); Adalius Thomas (three sacks in '08) and Tedy Bruschi (averaged 112 tackles per season from 2003-07). Thomas had a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Chargers in last season's regular season contest. DE Richard Seymour, a five-time Pro Bowler, is one of the NFL's top defensive linemen, while DT Vince Wilfork regularly plugs the inside of the line.

Noteworthy

QB Kevin O'Connell, formerly of La Costa Canyon High and San Diego State, is the backup quarterback. He has completed 3-of-4 passes for 25 yards during his rookie season. ... K Stephen Gostkowski is a perfect 10-of-10 on field goals this season and has made 17 straight regular season attempts, dating to last December. ... Ellis Hobbs is averaging 34.2 yards on kickoff returns. ... New England has won 17 postseason games since 1994; the Chargers have won four during that span. ... The Patriots have won 12 consecutive road games, the second best streak in NFL history behind San Francisco (18 from 1988-90). ... New England didn't return to the East Coast after Sunday's victory in San Francisco. The Patriots are spending this week practicing at San Jose State. ... CB Antwain Spann (El Camino) is on the practice squad.

People please wrote on Oct 7, 2008 11:26 PM:Why is everyone picking on the chargers? Let me tell you WHY! Plain & simple they have no HEART or BALLS It's not the coaches, it's the ... players drinking half the night away before a game. If i were a chager fan i would commit my self for evaluation of why do i follow the losing team of the decades. They are playing just like the padreas did this year, good at first and [bad] at the end!!!

BoltBacker65 wrote on Oct 8, 2008 10:30 AM:One thing you can say about the NFL is that you can expect the unexpected. With parity in the game these days, more times than not many games are a toss up. I want the Chargers to win but I don't assume they will or that they will lose. But seeing how things have gone thus far, I'm not too certain even with NE missing Tom Brady.

This Charger team is out of sorts due to confusion and a weaker leadership than the last two seasons. There is stil opportunity to turn things around and make adjustments that will best serve the talents and depth of players. I just don't know if this will transpire or if it will continue as it is at present. We will see this Sunday.

As for the lack luster performance and confusion befalling the Bolts, only one man must take the brunt, Norv. His direction as head coach leaves much for speculation. In this game/business some folks are better as coordinators than coaches or better of staying in college than in the pros. Too bad, $$$ gets in the way to clear judgment.

Guys like Turner who really are coordinators are lured away to head coaching jobs for the big cash but flop because that's not their forte. Norm Chow, Wade Phillips, Spurrier, Saban to new a few. Man up guys and know your limitations. How much money do you need or is it your egos than need stroking!

Anyway, It is what it and I've said too much already. Go Bolts!

Toilet Duck wrote on Oct 8, 2008 12:34 PM:Wade Phillips is 4-1 and came close to going to the SB last season.

No sophmore jinx for Wade.

Why is he in that list?

Norv?

Well EVERYONE knew how that would pan out.

Everyone EXCEPT the resident genius AJ Smith.

Back to being the worst team in the league again.

LT's the main engine of this team, he has to get it going. Keep giving this guy the ball as much as he can. And also...LT..START SMILING, man! Don't be down, bro.

AFC B-east teams are no joke compared to the AFC W-eak-EST. Time to shape up or ship out! at home against NE (3-1 isn't bad) and at BUF (coming off a bye next week, 4-1) are no joke. Do me a favor Chargers, get your act going and win these games!

Thanks,
DOLPHINS fan

GO PHINS!!!

James wrote on Oct 8, 2008 1:43 PM:Your takes are ridiculous Toilet Duck. Last time I checked Norv went further in the playoffs than Norv...The Cowboys choked a playoff game in their first game. They get schooled at home against the Redskins...they get lucky to slide by the Bengals at home...and the Wade watch has begun....Oh, Yeah he's doing "soooooo" much better than Norv.

James wrote on Oct 8, 2008 1:44 PM:And yet another uninformed opinion from Jimbo. Really, playing poorly Jimbo. I guess a quarterback rating that stands at number three in the league...yeah that's really awful...Dude get your facts straight. Last time I checked NC State is a division I team. I should expect nothing less from a fact-less NEVER WAS...How many suns are in your world there JImbo.

I like the way Toilet Duck never speaks of his team...Must be a Lion Fan...Come out of the closet Toilet Duck.

Jimbo wrote on Oct 8, 2008 6:05 PM:James, you must be getting old....repeating yourself....get a grip dude!

Boltbacker is on the money. Same problem as last year, both Norv and Rivers are weak leaders.
Norv can best help the team by going back to the Raiders. LT is hurting and the team needs a spark. Play Volek and let Rivers go back to the bench (where he sat because he could not oust Brees).

Whatever wrote on Oct 8, 2008 6:16 PM:Go CHARGERS!!!! WE ROCK!!! HATERS KEEP ON HATING. GET OUT OF S.D. POSERS !!!

Toilet Duck wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:03 PM:Norv inherited a team that was another year seasoned with a QB that had a year under his belt.

Marty got a raw deal because he had to deal with AJs insistence on running the QB that could have won the whole thing out of town and starting over. Had Marty had Brees in 2006, he would have beaten NE so to say Norv got you over the top is ludicrous.

Norv also had a lower seed to begin with.

However, I dont remember Marty starting like this.

My team is the Raiders and Ive alluded to that many times.

Its obvious that this isnt their year but it isnt yours either.

The Raiders are young, fast, and up and coming.

The Chargers are aging, slow, and going over the hill.

I hope you enjoyed beating the Raiders the last few years because we are coming back like we always do.

You still dont have any SB trips to rub in our face do you?

Youre only marginally better now.

Next year, you will be another year Norved.

You guys have gone to talking about SBs to being happy just beating the Raiders in their down years.

But no SBs of your own.

Its all about SB appearences.

Sean C. wrote on Oct 8, 2008 7:14 PM:If its true Charger players were getting drunk saturday nite in Miami. It won`t happen this saturday. The Chargers should beat the Pats. I would like to see us mix it up on offense. We need to be less predictable. Our D needs to attack more in the beginning of games. Toilet claims she is a Bronco fan. Jimbo it looks like James slapped you again,.. ouch hand print across your face.

James wrote on Oct 8, 2008 10:47 PM:Have a nice life Jimbo...you will no longer be acknowledged!

Play Volek over Rivers. Now I know ...LUDICROUS AND JUST DOWNRIGHT STUPID.

And Toilet D?ck...Norv started at a lower seed? That's just non-sensical. Marty had an easier road at home and he couldn't get out of the second round. Oh yeah, I guess Marty got a raw deal in KC where I believe he took a number one seed into the playoffs 2-3 times and got beaten down each year...I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE A PROPONENT OF A COACH WHO PLAYS NOT TO LOSE!...oh wait that's right you're a Raider fan you guys have a lot in common. Congratulations over the last five years you and the Lions have been fighting it out for the worst record in Football. You guys are coming back like you always do? Yeah maybe when Al finally dies in his 90's...YOUR FRANCHISE IS A JOKE...and go ahead with your living in the past Al Bundy defense...it's nice to live in the past have a nice time...LOSER...funny how you're reduced to spending all your time trying to cut down the dominant team in the AFC the last five years...HILARIOUS WHAT YOU'VE BEEN REDUCE TO, I GUESS IF YOUR TEAM SUCKS AND THAT'S ALL YOU GOT TO DO, WE CHARGER FANS SHOULD TAKE THAT AS A COMPLIMENT AND WE'RE HAPPY TO HELP YOU THROUGH THIS SORRY AND DEPRESSING TIME IN YOUR LIFE...COMMITMENT TO LOSING!

Toilet Duck wrote on Oct 8, 2008 11:49 PM:Im not a woman and I never claimed to be a Bronco fan.

Also, I can talk circles around you when it comes to football.

Try me!

Your team has no heart. My team has more heart and once we revamp our lines this offseason, your old cryptic team will no longer be on top.

Youre already falling fast as your players age quickly. After 2009, you will have players jumping ship as your team fizzles.

Ray Charles could see it coming.

Now, Goff is thinking retirement?

As if you didnt have enough problems?

We warned you about both Norv and Cottrell.

Your depth and talent arent there anymore either.

Such denial!

Jaque wrote on Oct 9, 2008 7:26 AM:Gotta agree that the Norv and Ted show has grown stale. And while this three year window come to a close in two, it belie AJ to explain what happened. Too bab

Toilet Duck wrote on Oct 9, 2008 2:32 PM:James

UHHH??? Marty earned that right of an easier road by going 14-2.

Duh!

Marty would have beaten a lower seed in 2006 also so its the same thing. Granted, Norv did get you to the AFC Championship but Marty would have beaten NE had he not had to play with a rookie starter at QB.

Running Brees out of town cost you a SB as you would have beaten NE, Indy, and Chicago IMO.

Marty did his part but the players gave it away with stupid moments. That was your best shot too because your defense looked a whole lot better than they do now.

I think not resinging Brees was a colossal mistake and Marty got the blame for the teams failures as a result.

Tough break because your window is definitely closing.

cube wrote on Oct 9, 2008 6:15 PM:not that it's any excuse but teams from the west traveling east for the early game are 0-10 . it's a scheduling thing that stinks but will not change any time soon .
