CHARGERS NOTES: Chambers still bothered by ankle sprain

By MIKE SULLIVAN - Staff Writer | Wednesday, October 8, 2008 7:01 PM PDT

SAN DIEGO ---- Chargers receiver Chris Chambers described his availability for Sunday's game against New England as "day to day" after missing Wednesday's practice with a sprained left ankle.

Chambers could be in danger of missing the game and said he didn't wish to talk about the level of pain he was feeling four days before kickoff.

"I can't really describe it, and it's not something I want to discuss anyway," Chambers said. "So I have no comment on any of that stuff. It's day to day right now. Hopefully, it will gradually get better."

Chambers injured the ankle on the final play of the third quarter during Sunday's loss to Miami. He said it was "frustrating" not to be able to finish the game against his former team.

He also was taken aback by what he heard from Dolphins fans upon catching his first pass in Sunday's game: a lot more boos than cheers.

"It surprised me a little bit," Chambers said. "I talked to a couple guys on their team, and they couldn't believe it themselves because I'm received very well in that area. It's just part of the game.

"It actually got me fired up. I couldn't wait to make a play at some point of the game and be able to contribute that way. But it was fine."

Chambers scored a touchdown in the third quarter. He said Wednesday that he had planned to do something for the crowd if he scored ---- "blow a kiss, or some nice gesture," Chambers said ---- but changed his mind after the booing.

Cassel's journey

You think the Chargers have struggled to replace Shawne Merriman? How about trying to replace Tom Brady.

Matt Cassel, about as nondescript a backup quarterback in the NFL just five weeks ago, was suddenly thrust into that predicament when New England lost Brady to a season-ending knee injury in Week 1.

Even Patriots coach Bill Belichick admits that drafting Cassel in the seventh round in 2005 was a reach. Cassel didn't even start a single college game at USC, where he played behind Heisman Trophy winners Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart.

"It was the seventh round," Belichick said. "So at that point in the draft, that's the time where you take a shot at guys who have something going for them, but if they were proven commodities, they wouldn't be sitting there in the seventh round. So that's why we did it."

Cassel arrived in training camp and found four other quarterbacks waiting: Brady, and veterans Doug Flutie, Chris Redman and Rohan Davey.

"I had to work my way up through it and earn my spot then and I take that approach each and every year," Cassel said. "You have to earn it in this league. Nothing's given to you."

Cassel has completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 707 yards. He has thrown three touchdown passes and three interceptions.

Tomlinson out

LaDainian Tomlinson missed practice Wednesday because of his lingering right big toe injury. He said he hopes to participate in at least part of Thursday's practice.

He said the level of soreness now isn't as bad as the pain he dealt with a month ago.

"I think I'm close to getting back to where I want to be," Tomlinson said. "I definitely want to take as much time and as much pressure off it as possible. Obviously, as you well know, the more you play on it, it's never going to get completely healthy."

Et cetera

C Nick Hardwick isn't a big fan of Patriots DE Richard Seymour because of what he considered dirty play in last season's AFC Championship Game. But Hardwick won't be discussing Seymour this week. "I'm not really answering those questions," Hardwick said. ... OLB Jyles Tucker missed practice, and his hamstring injury could sideline him through October. FB Mike Tolbert (ankle) was a limited practice participant. ... The Chargers announced that "enough tickets" have been sold to lift the television blackout for Sunday's game. Kickoff is at 5:15 p.m. on NBC.

What happened to your SB team?

RAIDERMANN wrote on Oct 8, 2008 11:09 PM:THEY FAILED TO LIVE UP TO THE HYPE!!! THE NFL SHOULD LOOK INTO GETING THEM OFF HIGHLIGHTED GAMES ON TV, AND PUT THE ON WITH SATURDAY CARTOONS. BECAUSE IT JUST THAT FUNNY TOO WATCH THE SUPER CHOKERS....

Raidehater wrote on Oct 9, 2008 7:19 AM:Raidermann-
You are a typical Idiot of the blackhole. Why dont you crawl back into it. You Team has not done anything in the past 5 years Dumb A@#!

RAIDERMANN wrote on Oct 9, 2008 8:36 AM:Awe, did I get under your sorry little powder puff smurff blue jersey that you bought at the swap meet. The Chokers are the laughing stock of the NFL this year. Yes, my team does have some things to work out. But we are'nt the team that was to make the playoffs or S.B. like the CHOKERS!!!! 5 YEARS AGO WE PLAYED IN THE SUPER BOWL, WHENS THE LAST AND "ONLY" TIME THE SAN DIEGO SUPER CHOKERS PLAYED IN THE BOWL GAME....YOUR SORRY CHOKERS ONLY WON 1 PLAYOFF GAME IN LIKE A 100 YEARS LAST YEAR!!!!SO, GO AND LAY DOWN BY YOUR BOWL AND DRINK YOUR WATER.

Robert wrote on Oct 9, 2008 9:16 AM:This game should be interesting. It's missing some major stars from each team but the rivalry is still exciting. Not to mention two players who are the best in the entire NFL at their respective position in LT and MOSS.

How's that mancrush you have on Brees going?

R8rzE8kokz wrote on Oct 9, 2008 10:22 AM:How funny that raideer fan has nothing better to do than post on a Chargers story...daily LMAO!!! Is this a representation of how completely irrelevant your team is? Does it hurt your black hole that we have owned you for 10 straight? Yes your team has three rings as you constantly speak of, but unlike the raideers we will be competing for championships for the next ten years and you will be...well commenting on Chargers blogs about how great 1983 was...BTW we won two playoff games last year.

MikeD NatCity wrote on Oct 9, 2008 10:49 AM:all that matters is this year. Forget about 5 years ago, last year, or whatever. the point is the chargers are not playing well, especially on D. The raiders need to get their management straight and continue to acquire talent. the pats are getting too old on D. NObody's perfect. i'm tired of pats and raider fans talking so much crap, especially about the past. raiderfans who cares if you've won a superbowl? all that matters is this year --if your team has the ability to win it and are competitive. obviously not -- although you are headed in the right direction. the pats, well give them respect for being so dominant over the last few years. but this year? its going to be hard to get there without brady no doubt. it'll be an endless cycle of bickering but you have to look at this year and only this year. with that said, the chargers beat the raiders this year...so 5 years ago has nothing to do with anything. we should be talking crap to you guys since we beat you already. this sunday we play the pats so we'll see what happens. i'm sure the pats will give us a hard time, but thats why they play the game.

Chargers rule Raiders drool wrote on Oct 9, 2008 11:13 AM:Raider doofus we won 2 playoff games last year. We`ll see your sorrya*$ team on december 4th, so prepare for another Raiders loss. So there !

CHARGERS FOR LIFE wrote on Oct 9, 2008 11:34 AM:RAIDERMANN... If we are the super chokers and we beat you the last 10 games in a row... What does that make you? Wait.. it makes you our " LAY DOWN BY YOUR BOWL AND DRINK YOUR WATER types" right? Commitment to excellence? What a joke! Up 15 to 0 at half time and lose 28-18 and we're the chokers... OK? All you big mouth wannabe pirates, can do is talk your smack...Oh and by the way, the only sorry wannabe gangsters buying their jerseys at the swap meet are you and your Raiderette buddies. Here is a number that you might want 1-800-bailout.

Toilet wrote on Oct 9, 2008 11:47 AM:Do I hear Charger fans now talking about ther PAST?

The PAST 5 years?

Why stop at 5 years if were talking about the PAST?

Lets go back further.

Charger fans are hypocrites as they are always ripping Raider fans for talking about the past.

Now they are doing it.

Except they have no past except to talk about beating the Raiders in down years between Super Bowl appearences.

Big deal!

Thats a far cry from their own SB appearence to rub in our face.

They sure are singing a different tune now arent they?

Raidehater wrote on Oct 9, 2008 12:06 PM:I will take my powder blue jersey any day. Why Dont you take your sotty Ass up to the bay area and live. You would be closer to the Blackhole and leave us smurfs alone. Dumb ass!

FinsFan13 wrote on Oct 9, 2008 12:27 PM:C'mon Chargers! Bet dem cheatin' Pats! Help my division out..

Many Thanks,

time for bloging wrote on Oct 9, 2008 1:18 PM:The funny thing is that the CHOKERS best record they have to look back at is, they beat "1" TEAM 10 TIMES IN A ROW. Hey CHOKER 4 LIFE, Go ahead and look into the police records in S.D. & look how many CHOKER fans are arrested every home game. The RAIDERS diddnt lose the game that piece of crap coach threw the the game. He knew he was getting fired. The RAIDERS will have a better record at the end of the year then the "SUPER CHICKEN CHOKERS". After they fire NORV, your team will fall more apart. You have been "NORVED" By the way i'm getting $67.00 an hour from S.D. city to blog about your sorry team!!!

MikeD wrote on Oct 9, 2008 2:45 PM:Toilet obviously you are missing the point of my post. maybe then i should have been more clear in saying that it is useless to talk about the past -- the raider fans do it, and apparently, so do the charger fans. regardless, the point is the past has nothing to do with this season. and again, with that being said, we already beat the raiders so it only makes sense that we're justified to talk crap this year until we play you again. to me it doesnt make sense to argue about whether the chargers beat the raiders 10 times in a row or the raiders winning superbowls. is john madden coaching? is dan fouts our qb? what does that have to do with how good our teams are and winning this year.

musicprodigy wrote on Oct 9, 2008 9:57 PM:Looking more like L.T. is washed up. Maybe its time to put in Sproles... They need the boost to win some games. Gotta have a productive running game.

musicprodigy wrote on Oct 9, 2008 9:59 PM:L.T. is washed up. Put in Sproles or risk the season.

Toilet Duck wrote on Oct 10, 2008 12:44 PM:Mike D

However, you were expected to be a SB contender and as of now it doesnt appear that way.

The Raiders are rebuilding.

Beating a rebuilding team when youre a SB favorite is no big deal when your SB dreams are crashing all around you.

Anything short of the SB is a dispappointment as the window continues to slam shut each week.

Who are you kidding?
