REGION: Dems closing gap in county

Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 20.

Long considered a bastion of conservatism, the gap between right and left in San Diego County is continuing to narrow this year if the latest voter registration numbers are true indicators.

Still, despite the overall registration numbers, most North County cities remain firmly red, save for the hairbreadth changes that tipped Encinitas into the blue column in the last few weeks. In that city, the number of registered Democrats is now at 219 more than the Republican voters.

Overall, North County cities tally in at 133,330 registered Republicans to 96,688 Democrats, as of Oct. 1, according to the San Diego County registrar of voters office.

Countywide, however, the number of registered Democrats in the county crept to just over 1 percentage point behind Republicans as of Oct. 1, closing a gap that in the last two decades had been much larger.

At the start of the month, Democrats made up 35.9 percent of the electorate. Republicans were at 37.1 percent.

Three months ago, the gap between the parties was 2 percent across the county.

Conventional wisdom says voters who decline to state a party preference will make a difference in the Nov. 4 election.

Decline-to-state voters have increased, and now make up about 22.5 percent of county voters.

"If the independents break more toward our side, they are going to put us over the 50 percent mark in terms of delivering San Diego County for our (presidential) candidate," said Jess Durfee, chairman of the San Diego County Democratic Party.

"We have not seen the Democrat vote exceed 50 percent in a generation. That's what we are excited about."

Tony Krvaric, chairman of the San Diego Republican Party, said he sees that independents ---- also a growing segment of voters ---- tend to mirror the area in which they reside.

And, he noted, "both parties have been losing (registered voters) the last couple of years."

Krvaric said that the addition of Sarah Palin as a vice presidential candidate has "rejuvenated" Republicans, but these are still tough times for the party.

"There's no question that we face some headwind and challenges," Krvaric said.

Republicans had held a five-point lead over Democrats since at least 2000 when then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush and then-Vice President Al Gore vied for the presidency.

And at the time of the presidential election in 2004, when Bush battled Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., San Diego County's registered voters came in at 40 percent Republican, 34 percent Democrat.

Democrats lead the number of registered voters in the city of San Diego by a wide margin.

With the deadline to register is Oct. 20, the final tallies may change a bit.

Registrar Deborah Seiler said Thursday that she is expecting to receive as many as 70,000 new voter registration cards from the start of the month through the deadline.

That number is lower than the mad rush of 120,000 cards she said the local office got in the final weeks before the registration deadline in the 2004 presidential election.

She said that may be because they had a flood of folks registering to vote in the two months before the hotly contested Democratic presidential primary race in February.

"We've been very, very busy, but the volume has been really steady through out the year," Seiler said.

Since the end of January, the number of registered voters in the county has climbed by more than 95,000, reaching 1,409,229 as of the start of October.

All the cities in the county have seen gains in registered voters in the last three months, except in Oceanside, which saw its number of registered voters drop by about 1,200, or 1 percent of the city's voters.

It's no surprise as the presidential election draws nearer that the voter numbers are up. But voters may not be aware they can cast their ballots early.

As of Thursday, about 1,000 San Diego County voters had already cast their ballots through early voting, which is held at the registrar's office in central San Diego.

Absentee voters are now receiving their ballots in the mail; the registrar's office sent them out earlier this week.

I really don't remember but anything less that 95% is disgraceful. What about the other parties? I guess their memberships don't count along with not being included in debates.

The rest of the world is waiting in the wind for us to get up to speed and join them in civility.

Please more Dems wrote on Oct 10, 2008 7:24 AM:Look what they have done to the State. BROKE! Look what they did with Freddie Mac and Fannie May. Barney Frank and Chris Dodd protected their bad loans to under qualified. BROKE. Look what they did as the majority in Congress the last two years, Highest unemployment in years, Mortgage crisis, highest energy prices and lowest approval rating EVER. BROKE
Yep let's vote more of them into office! Please folks read before you vote and quit looking for the government to take care of you.

Gotta love being an american right now...Thank you GW for making this all possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To Local Osider wrote on Oct 10, 2008 7:56 AM:You should do research. Obama gave $800,000 to Acorn to help voter registration and in Nevada Acorn signed up the Dallas Cowboy football (i.e. voter fraud). Pelosi's husband is profiting from government contracts. Look at the state of California, which has been run by Democrats for years and we are 15 billion dollar in debt and the Republicans gave us a trillion dollar national debt. It does not matter who is in office they forgot about the American people. You have two people who are running for president one who votes present on important issues and cannot take a side, and who does not know anything about the economy, but to raise taxes and wants to invade a county. Another one who does not know anything about the economy and said we can be in Iraq for 100 years. That is why we need a new political party that will actually be for the people.

A Rose by any other Name wrote on Oct 10, 2008 8:29 AM:If there were no name to your party. If the man did not have a strange name.
If you did not have someone telling you spin facts.
If you have not been touched by a death in Iraq or touched by the economy?
Would you know the truth?
If you know the truth, what is it that makes you need a name?
If there were no names, would you vote for more of what we have now?
Reverse the names and would you vote the same for four more years?
Does the name make you hate?
Reverse the names and would you hate your party for the death of a soldier?
Reverse the names and would hou hate the party for your loss of home?
Reverse the name and would you want another President like him?
Reverse the names and would you know the truth?

Old Timer wrote on Oct 10, 2008 9:44 AM:The old adage that a man with a little money in his pocket will vote Republican, but during difficult economic times, that man becomes a Democrat. If we as a people could only get some balance between the two, America would be better off in the long run.

Cardiffian wrote on Oct 10, 2008 11:25 AM:If any blame is to be laid bare for the current political climate and level of dicourse, it goes to Gingrich and Rove. Those two have done more to stifle bi-partisanship than any other in Washington. Sure, Rostenkowski was heavy handed, and Helms was never co-operative, but remember, O'Neill and Reagan were friends. That friendship could not occur today. For that reason alone, it's time to hand it over to a new generation. Let them start to shape the world in their image. Us old timers have had our chance - and look what we have done with it. Such a shame.

local osider wrote on Oct 10, 2008 12:55 PM:it sounds like everyone forgot that the republicans have had the majority including the president for ALL but the last 20 months....Gee...thats kind of a sore spot for some people to admit...With a democratic Congress, Senate, and Presidency it will be even better than the Clinton years as we can go as far to the left as we want and there is nothing anyone can do....just like what happened when we had a Republican president, Congress, and Senate....Maybe we can find our center and a little bit of balance, but the Dems couldnt have done it without GW, and the scandelous red senators and Congressmen...Its gonna be a while until America forgets how bad it can be under republican leadership....or lack there of..

Thanks wrote on Oct 10, 2008 1:29 PM:It's seems that our San Diego area newspaper's biased reporting is having an effect. Please if you are considering voting for Obama do some reading on the internet for the truth about him because it won't be printed by newspapers or on channel 8, 10 , 7 etc.

To Cardiffian wrote on Oct 10, 2008 1:53 PM:Like James Carville and Hillary Clinton were/are bipartisian. Also at the time Dick Morris. Oh yes, Ted Kennedy another bipartisian fellow. Senator Byrd from West Virgina used to cross the isle all the time. Please! This started long before Newt and Rove.
You "bad mouth" Newt. He was trying to make a difference and create change at the time similiar to what your man Obama is doing now. Obviously you didn't like the "change". To bad Newt wasn't running now. At least we would have a leader to vote for!

Finally wrote on Oct 10, 2008 2:09 PM:I can't wait for the county to go blue. These Republicans in Washington have ripped us off! If California got at least a dollar back for every dollar we paid in Federal taxes, we would not have a budget shortfall. Our local elected Republicans love sending our tax dollars to the southern red states and Texas. Enough is enough. Bring back our tax dollars. Vote Democrat!

Finally Go Blue wrote on Oct 10, 2008 2:48 PM:Then the whole country can be broke like California. All our money can go to taxes and the country still broke. Just look at what the Dem majority in Congress has done for us the last two years! Lowest rating EVER! Mortgage meltdown, high unemployment etc etc. What other changes do they have for us? Vote BLUE

Finally wrote on Oct 10, 2008 3:05 PM:The Democrats have had congress for just over a year. They still have not controlled the senate and barely have had a majority in the house. The Democrats have not even been able to overrule a veto. Nice try in trying to blame the Democrats for the financial mess. The whole thing is the fault of the lock-step Republicans and a spend crazy president.

John wrote on Oct 10, 2008 4:10 PM:Enough whining. The republicans had 8 years to dig their own grave and they sure did a fine job. I just hope the rest of us can dig out. Can't blame the Democratic Party for all the problems we have. They have held a small majority in congress the last 2 years - but there are still enough spoiled brats liked Issa and Bilbray to gum up the works. After November if those two are still in their seats, they will be in a super-minority and the peoples work will finally be done in spite of their foot dragging and stone walling.

DW wrote on Oct 10, 2008 4:18 PM:Thank you GWBush. The GOP had the White House, House and Senate and then an idiot single-handedly destroyed it. Impressive legacy.

Peace and Prosperity wrote on Oct 10, 2008 4:30 PM:I fear we are about to revert back to the Clinton years and another national nightmare of peace and prosperity for all.

Please Read This Book wrote on Oct 10, 2008 4:44 PM:There's a great new book out called "How Stupid Are We?" After perusing it, I can conclude that Americans are idiots - constantly voting against their own best interests after being "informed" by talk radio liars or scared by our worst administration ever (be very afraid of Saudi with box-cutters). The Bush Administration has ruined everything it has touched - our military, economy, environment ... To blame the Democratic congress who have only been in the majority for two years, don't have the votes in the Senate to get anything done (you need 60 - there you learned something) and a Republican president is just plain ... (wait for it) ... STUPID. Try voting for the Democrats for a change. History has proven over and over that it's better for the country.

No More Parties wrote on Oct 10, 2008 4:57 PM:We don't need a new party ... we need no parties. We need all the 'I've got to pick a side' sheep to step outside their republican or democrat built box and think for themselves ... objectively ... without the detriment of their red or blue tinted lenses.

All this stupid name calling and playing the blame game is going to do nothing but continue to sink us as a nation. Have the republicans screwed up? Oh Yeah!!!! Have the democrats been the saving grace? No Way!!!!

When are you people (and yes I mean YOU people) going to wake up and realize that no one who's on a side these days is on any side other than their own.

This is the kind of thinking that leaves us, once again, with no one truly worth voting for. We need fresh meat and we won't get it as long as this tired old democrats vs republicans club stays in place.

Givemeabreak wrote on Oct 10, 2008 5:13 PM:I used to be a Republican but no more. What is happening in this country is not the dems fault. They have only been in power 2 years and nothing happens of significance during a lame duck presidency. Both parties are to blame. Remember this. The president appoints the Fed Chairman, head of the SEC and treasury secretary. They set policy and enforce or do not enforce policies. If a CEO ran his company like Bush has he would be fired...albeit with a golden parachute. Quit blaming it on the last 2 yrs.....there is no basis for your positions. The Republicans really messed up this time and have no excuse

to peace and prosperity wrote on Oct 10, 2008 5:23 PM:what a scary thought...what would we do without war to divide us???

Cardiffian wrote on Oct 10, 2008 5:40 PM:Now just hold on 1:53! I liked Gingrich. I didn't agree with him, but I admired what he tried to do and I was generally supportive. The contract for america was a good idea. Problem is it never has held to. No one was accountable! Eventually, it went to Newt's head and he started to change the rules away from the contract. So yeah, I didn't like the change that came after. The Clinton style of governing was an offshoot of Newt - they didn't exactly invent it. Still, they were fairly bi-partisan until this impeachment crap came up. Byrd is a nut - just like Helms. Kennedy is a Kennedy in name only. Regardless, I still maintain that a friendship similar to what Tip and Dutch had is not possible today. You didn't comment on that - care to now?

To Finally Go Blue wrote on Oct 10, 2008 6:30 PM:The Democrats have only had the House and Senate for a year and a half. They barely have a majority in either of them. They don't have enough votes to override a veto and just about everything they have tried to do has been vetoed. The Republicans are still in control and they rubberstamp everything the president wants.

3. They will get us out of a war that has resulted in billions of dollars streaming to countries that harbor terrorists so that our gas and Halliburton executives can get richer.
