Smoke-free hospitals make sense

Congratulations to Tri-City Medical Center for making its campus smoke-free ("Tri-City extends smoking ban to parking lots, employee cars," Sept. 27). Smoke-free venues are sweeping across San Diego County, and it is only fitting that hospitals lead the way in the effort to protect public health from secondhand smoke.

For those few still on the fence about this issue, the truth is more clear than ever. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, America's chief medical educator, exposure to secondhand smoke is harmful to your health, and there is no safe level of exposure. As Tri-City Medical Center moves toward a smoke-free campus, they are doing their part to improve the lives of everyone who visits, works or receives care at their hospital.

On behalf of the North Coastal Prevention Coalition, which serves the cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista to reduce the harm of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, we commend Tri-City Medical Center for this important action.

Omissions prove media have a liberal bias

I just picked up today's North County Times and was appalled. It is interesting that for all the fact-checking that Calvin Woodward claims in this Associated Press article titled "Some facts adrift in debate," Oct. 2, he omits two of the most glaring contentions, i.e., the out-and-out lies of Joe Biden. In July 2007, Barack Obama did say nearly word for word that he would sit down with the leader of Iran without preconditions, and furthermore, Biden also lied about the statement that he opposed clean coal.

These omissions give rise to the charge that the media have a liberal bias.

Titans pocket profit from toxic financial goods

Is growth a good thing, a credit on the account of market freedom? Market freedom gave the world years of growth, and some claim this is a good thing that should partly offset today's bad results of market freedom.

I see no offset. History has repeated itself. Tycoons once dumped their toxic factory waste in nearby rivers. The cost was borne by those downstream. The benefit was pocketed.

Today, the same market freedom has let titans pocket profit from their toxic financial products. Rescue costs are to be borne by those downstream along the river of our time. Like the cost of the bubbles and busts, the costs of global growth have been in part dumped in the river of time.

In the name of growth and market freedom, we commit elder abuse on old Mother Nature. Of course, we do not have a truly free market. We have one dominated by monopolies. But even a truly free market would only improve things, so we get the most efficient arrangement of the deck chairs to view the iceberg of ecology disaster.

It's the economy, stupid

Who is sympathetic to house buyers who can't afford it? Same as when one buys a car and it's repossessed. At least the mortgage and home equity loans are tax-deductible. I think all taxpayers with debts should be included. I propose that they re-enact the tax deduction for the interest accrued on credit cards. Well, if the goal is to boost the economy, let's return to that tax deduction. That will help struggling taxpayers to stabilize their finances, just as the government wants to stabilize the banks, and mortgage loan and investment firms.

If you think this is a good idea, I encourage you to contact your congressman, and have editorials or subjects by columnists printed to speak out on, including all taxpayers. There are just too many who deserve a bailout, too.

I feel cheated by this proposal. We need to tell our representatives, state and federal, what we think, and to legislate for their constituency, citizens we trusted to elect, rather than those with enough lobbyists in government to represent themselves.

We are not that gullible

Re: "Escondido faces another fiscal obstacle: fewer people," Sept. 24: Excuse me, but El Grupo will use anything to bring up a defense for the illegal immigrants. Escondido, a bigoted, racist city? Get real, Mr. Flores, it won't work.

Our beautiful city has always had immigrants, only they bring something into our city, while the illegals only bring into our city God knows what. ... They come because it's a free country: free clinics, free food stamps, free anything. They will find a way to get it free. Yes, they work and send their money to wherever they are from ... while the American people pay for their babies to be born here.

Thank you, the ones keeping our children and city safe from unlicensed drivers and gangs; and, to El Grupo, we are not that gullible.

Military must stop railroading our soldiers

I am so tired of the military trying to railroad our soldiers, sailors, Marines, etc., for just doing the job that we trained them to do. Pretty soon, no one is going to join the service for fear of having to go to court to defend themselves for doing their job.

How about offering $10 million to get bin Laden (dead or alive) wherever he is –– just turn the job over to Blackwater and they will get him pretty fast, plus there will be no more court cases because they do not have to answer to anyone, especially the government. Good thing!

Bailout about votes, not economy

Re: "Wooden arrows and economic prosperity," Oct. 3: A rhetorical question: What does a tax break for manufacturers of wooden arrows have to with the bailout of Wall Street? Answer: Votes! Is this bribery or extortion? Or both? One hundred 10 earmarks costing over a $100 billion; $200 million for tax breaks for the rum industry in the Virgin Islands. (And the representative of the Virgin Islands claims she did not insert this earmark, and by the way, she cannot vote in the Congress.)

Shame on the Senate for earmark business as usual. The federal legislature is running amok! I have never been so incensed at Washington politics as I am today.

Disingenuousness exceeded only by hypocrisy

Re: "Analysis: Stakes high, Palin tops expectations," Oct. 3: How can Sarah Palin call herself a maverick when her solution for ending U.S. dependence on foreign oil is "drill, baby, drill," rather than developing alternative energy sources? Why is she unable to answer a question about subprime mortgages when we are in the midst of the worst financial crisis since 1929? How can she defend a war in which thousands of lives have been lost when she often speaks about the sanctity of life?

Palin's disingenuousness is only exceeded by her hypocrisy.

Folksy Palin is just like us

I'm tellin' ya. Boy-howdy! You betcha! This "Josie Sixpack," Sarah Palin, is gonna make some waves. Boy-oh-boy! Just think of all the hockey moms and NASCAR dads out there who are gonna swoon over this gal. You betcha! (wink) Gosh! She talks just like she's one of us. It's about time a beer-drinkin', moose-huntin', plain-spoken promoter of nuc-you-ler power had some sway in the administration of our nation.

Wait a minute. Ain't that why many of us voted for W? –– nah –– since he's a reformed alcoholic, we can't drink beer with him, so she's even more like us than he is. Them Republicans are sure workin' hard to put our country first! If you don't believe it, gol-durn-it, just take a look at their dad-gum bumper stickers.

God bless the soldiers

Wow. I am practically speechless. Here we have a father who could very well be our next vice president, and he is sending his son off to war. Gov. Palin sent her son off to war just last month. Each and every one of our soldiers are so valuable to their families and to the citizens of the United States.

I was really moved by the photo of Sen. Biden –– his eyes are the windows to his soul. I could see the pain and the fear and the trust and the pride in Sen. Biden's eyes –– I could see it for his son and for all the troops.

I pray that Sen. Biden and Gov. Palin will be reunited with their sons in the very near future. The fact that these boys are fighting for our country is more than one can really contemplate.

Pray that the men and women of the Armed Forces stay safe. Pray that our losses are few. I wish there were none lost, because they are all so precious and valuable. God bless and thank you for your service.

Sexual orientation is not learned

1. Sexual preference is a term we have come to use to describe the behaviors a person prefers in sexual activity. The word "preference" is appropriate, because the behaviors involved are largely a result of the individual's choices. The term sexual preference is not to be confused with (or thought to be synonymous with) sexual orientation.

2. Sexual orientation is a term used to describe the overarching characteristics (or landscape) of an individual's sexual self. A lot of sexual orientation has to do with the gender of the object of a person's sexual focus and desire. Some people are exclusively attracted to and drawn emotionally and sexually to a gender opposite their own. Some people are attracted to and drawn emotionally and sexually to their same gender. Yet others have the capacity (even though they may not consciously know it) to be attracted and drawn emotionally and sexually to both genders, given the right opportunity and situation. And other people are drawn emotionally to one gender and sexually to the other.

Sexual orientation, like other features of the personality landscape, is not consciously learned, not changeable, nor are these features the result of a conscious choice of the individual.

Jaka, Lilly and Chunka will improve schools

Vista Unified School District has three seats open this election. By filling these seats with Jaka, Lilly and Chunka, our schools will continue to improve and grow.

Jaka, Lilly and Chunka have the real-world experience of working with teachers and students not only as parents with children in public schools, but as advocates. By electing them to our school board, our district will be strengthened. Communication between board members and school sites will be improved, parents listened to and teachers respected.

You can't borrow your way out of debt

They say, "Now is not the time to point fingers." They say, "We have to save our credit market, or the little people, who didn't steal and squander our nation's wealth, wouldn't survive." Therefore, Congress just gave the very same people who have done these awful things to our economy hundreds of billions of dollars to stash in foreign banks, leaving the rest of us to turn into a Third World nation.

I've written thousands of words on why you shouldn't trust them. I mistakenly believed you might find some truth in my letters ... but my time was wasted.

I still hear the twisted logic that tax cuts can bring prosperity to our nation when we owe trillions. You can't borrow your way out of debt. Well, I say now is the time to point fingers and impeach or prosecute the crooks who got us in this mess. Take away their mansions, clean out their portfolios and put their loot in the U.S. Treasury. The thieves of Wall Street have looted money from all over the world, and it's time to not only point fingers, but prosecute and cut their tax loopholes.

Sarah not qualified to be VP candidate

At the Republican Convention, and at the recent vice presidential debate, Sarah Palin showed America that she knows how to act, read and memorize, and with emphasis.

In the days left leading up to the election, it will be up to the American voters to show whether or not they have the necessary analytical and critical judgment skills needed to determine whether she is qualified to be vice president, president, commander in chief and leader of the free world. If a pretty face and a folksy, glib tongue are your criteria, Sarah fits the bill.

The need to very carefully evaluate Palin's qualifications has nothing whatsoever to do with her being a woman. Rather, it is essential as we vote to make what very well may be the most important decision in our lifetime. There is no question in my mind that there are a great many women, as there are men, qualified to be president of the United States of America. Sarah Palin is just not one of them.

Whom can he turn to for OJT?

Obama, running for president and military commander in chief of the United States, has only 146 days of Senate and zero military experience. He desperately needs OJT (on the job training,) but as his sordid past unravels, he is forced to abandon or restrict many lifelong trainers and advisers.

For example, the Rev. Wright, his "pastor, mentor and moral compass" for 20 years, is gone and wife Michelle was told to shut up about not being proud of our country. Other trusted OJT advisers he must abandon include community organizer and political activist Bill Ayers, an unrepentant domestic terrorist and Barack's mentor and executive partner for four years at the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. ... adviser Franklin Raines, former CEO of Fannie Mae, fired in 2004 for stating nonexistent profits that gave him $91 million in salary and bonuses while exposing Fannie Mae to $5.3 trillion of questionable, mortgage-backed securities. ... Campaign Adviser Jamie Gorelick, builder of the infamous "Wall of Separation" that impeded communications between intelligence and law enforcement agencies needed to prevent 9/11.

Vote against our unrepresentatives

I think it's time to un-reward the representatives in Congress when they have their own agenda, and not America's, in mind. Remember to vote against Bilbray, Issa and Duncan Hunter when the election comes around. They were willing to let America go down the river while they stuck to their own agenda –– that's not representative of the people, it's representative of themselves.

The only way to get these sorts of people's attention is to un-reward them. Vote against their returning to Congress. Send them home.

Sarah Palin's progress to 1868

Sarah Palin likes to roll the word "progress" off her silver tongue. It's a good word. A strong word. But in Palin's case, not the right word. Her professed worldview is more appropriate to 1868 than to 2008.

On choice: Women should have babies galore, no matter what. How very 19th century, when babies died all the time and a family needed many hands.

On wildlife protection: If it has four legs and moves, shoot it, even from a helicopter. In 1868, men killed to feed their families. In 2008, with a Vons on every corner, the Palin family regularly participates in the bloodletting sports.

Creationism: Man walked among the T-rexes, all species created by God at the same time. In 1868, when an eighth-grade education was the rule, this was a fine thing to believe. And so on.

If you elect Palin-McCain, there's a good possibility this lady will be your president, given McCain's age. ... If you like the rootin', shootin' days of old, vote for Sarah Palin.

Some 'facts' up for debate

Here we are, after the vice presidential debate. The North County Times prints an article about the "facts" of what Sarah Palin and Joe Biden said ("Some facts adrift in debate," Oct. 3).

I have an issue with one of those facts, that being the one about what Palin said concerning SB 190 that McCain co-sponsored in 2005. OK, they have the facts right, but they stopped short of letting us know that even though the Republicans were in control at that time, when it came up for vote for full consideration, every Democrat voted no while every Republican voted yes, thereby, it was killed and went nowhere. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Chuck Schumer all said there were no problems with Freddie and Fannie. A bill that would have prevented this housing mess. You get my point! Trust Democrats on the economy? I think not.

One more point –– how can Americans vote for a man who has snubbed us and cannot even acknowledge our flag, and then has the audacity to change the flag on his plane to a symbol he made up and made pictures of himself with that symbol on his lapel? Mark my word, he will flaunt that symbol with one of socialism if elected.

After eight years of Bush the Democrats had an edge, but, all things being equal, would we have elected an African-American? Or a woman if Hillary would’ve voted against the Iraq war for political purposes instead of for the war for political purposes? Could McCain have won in a straight up fight against either? We’ll never know. But consider this:
Would Bush have won in 2000 without Monica Lewinsky?
Would Clinton have won in 1992 without “It’s the economy, stupid,” and/or Ross Perot?
Would Reagan have won without the Iranian hostage crisis?
Would Carter have won without Watergate?
Would Nixon have won without Vietnam?
And so on.
Challengers cannot control the events that lead to their elections, they just take advantage of them. The incumbent Party always is to blame for the things that lead to their worst nightmare succeeding them.
And so it goes in 2008.

The shame and embarrassment on McCain’s face was there for all to see last night when he had to defend Obama against insinuations from his own supporters. And got booed.
The one guy said he was scared, scared mind you, to raise his newborn under an Obama Presidency. The lady actually said that Obama was an Arab. McCain was forced to concede his opponent was not, in fact, an Arab. Unbelievable.
When a candidate plays dirty and wins, he gets to be President and most people forget how he won. If they lose, they get forgotten. In McCain’s case, he’ll have to return to the Senate. Does he go back with any shred of dignity?
It’s his choice now.

To Janet Price wrote on Oct 11, 2008 7:55 AM:You are misinformed. In the (Republican majority) 109th Congress, 2005-2006, bills were introduced in the House and Senate to revamp the oversight of Fannie and Freddie. The House version of the bill was the Federal Housing Finance Reform Act of 2005, HR1461 and the Senate version was Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S190. The bills were very similar. HR1461 was introduced in April 5, 2005, subsequently amended, and passed the House on October 26, 2005 by a 331-90 vote, with both Democrats and Republicans voting for it. S190 was introduced in the Senate on Jan 26, 2005, sponsored by Hagel and co-sponsored by Dole and Sununu. McCain was not originally a co-sponsor, and only later tried to sign on after it had already died. S190 was discussed in the Senate Banking Committee on July 28, 2005 with the result, "Ordered to be reported with an amendment in the nature of a substitute favorably", which I believe is Congress speak for, "we don't like this, please go rewrite it and we may reconsider", i.e., the bill died in a Republican controlled committee and never came to the floor of the Senate or back to the Senate Banking Committee for reconsideration.

In any case, this bill alone would not have solved anything. Not only would it fail to improve significantly upon the regulatory authority, but it actually would have increased the opportunities for Fannie and Freddie to exploit their subsidies in order to expand into other areas of residential finance.

And FYI: Obama does have the American Flag on the side of his plane. Take a look for yourself, and don't believe every email that fills your inbox.

The "mainstream" media, owned by the corporate Wall Street titans who benefit from conservative corruption and corporate welfare, strongly favor the Republicans and are terrified of real reform.
In "fact checking" the debate, the biggest omissions were in McCain's outright LIES.

McCain LIED about earmarks, failing to note that he selected as his running mate the governor whose state had the highest per-capita earmarks in the entire nation and TWENTY TIMES those of Obama's state. And the issue is not just the earmarks, but the HYPOCRISY. Obama is the real reformer, not McCain, but McCain is making his assault on ALL earmarks (rather than selectively on merit or not) a core issue of his campaign. In contrast, Obama does not seek a blanket ban on ALL earmarks, because some have merit, but actually worked across party lines with ultraconservative Republican Tom Coburn (Oklahoma) to actually pass an earmark reform bill that requires transparency, and that all earmark requests be posted online. A scalpel, not a hatchet (is that too nuanced for conservatives?)

McCain LIED about Obama's record on taxes, as many media reports did confirm, though not the North County Times.

When Obama sought a moment extra to rebut the lies, corporate lackey Brokaw would not allow it, and "moved on" to other issues.

Nice effort, but a factual correction: whether Prop 8 passes or fails, it is not subject to review by the U.S. Supreme Court since the case was decided ONLY based on the Calfornia Constitution.
However, IF Prop 8 fails, it changes the state Constitution, which effectively overrules the decision.
If that happens, the California court could still declare it unconstitutional, but that would then have to be based on the equal protection clause in the U.S. Constitution, which would then be subject to review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Not to mention, the key reason NObama chose O'Biden was for his foreign policy expertise, yet.. NOBiden has been wrong on so many occasions, it is laughable that the press has not gone through NObiden's record.

Many other under-reported NObama's changing positions: sittin down without preconditions, NObama & Biden have said two completely different things about

It is beyond omissions, it is an out-in-out Love Affair with the idea of a Barackous NObamous presidency, the liberal bias will be the hangover America will feel soon after he fails to do what he now says.

One reason that I oppose religion being interjected into law is that religion does not use logic, reason or rational thought as its basis, religion uses faith and emotion.
Propositions like Prop. 4 and Prop. 8 (and "good-old" Prop. 83) are emotion-based. Props 4 and 83 were "named laws", "Sarah's Law" and "Jessica's Law" respectively.
The strange part is that, while there actually was a "Jessica" for which Prop. 83 was written, there is NO "Sarah" for which Prop. 4 was written, NO "Sarah" involved at all.
I NEVER vote for a "named law" specifically because naming a law is supposed to be an emotional appeal, a "tug at the heart-strings".
When writing and enacting laws emotion SHOULD be "checked at the door"
so that "cool heads can prevail".
Logic, rational thought and reason are the components of a wise law,
emotion is the prime component of an unwise and probably un-Constitutional law.

The American people will no longer tolerate hate and fear from their political leaders. Obama has a presidential challenge ahead of him but I am confident he was put here exactly at this time because he is capable of rising to this challenge. McCain is clearly NOT.

Ron often asks why, if McCain is so bad, why Obama's lead is not more significant? Consider the fact that a virtually unknown black man has risen in such a momentious and powerful shot to be in sight of leading the world's most powerful nation means Obama had to come from far behind in the beginning and overcome great obstacles to achieve even this much.

As the time grows near and more people see what Obama is made of, his numbers grow to double digit leads.

From the Bear wrote on Oct 11, 2008 11:02 AM:ARGUMENT IN FAVOR OF
PROPOSITION 8 ARGUMENT AGAINST
PROPOSITION 8

Proposition 8 is simple and straightforward. It contains the same 14 words that were previously approved in 2000 by over 61% of California voters: “Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.”

Because four activist judges in San Francisco wrongly overturned the people’s vote, we need to pass this measure as a constitutional amendment to RESTORE THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGE as a man and a woman.

Proposition 8 is about preserving marriage; it’s not an attack on the gay lifestyle. Proposition 8 doesn’t take away any rights or benefits of gay or lesbian domestic partnerships. Under California law, “domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits” as married spouses. (Family Code § 297.5.) There are NO exceptions. Proposition 8 WILL NOT change this.

YES on Proposition 8 does three simple things:

It restores the definition of marriage to what the vast majority of California voters already approved and human history has understood marriage to be.

It overturns the outrageous decision of four activist Supreme Court judges who ignored the will of the people.

It protects our children from being taught in public schools that “same-sex marriage” is the same as traditional marriage.

Proposition 8 protects marriage as an essential institution of society. While death, divorce, or other circumstances may prevent the ideal, the best situation for a child is to be raised by a married mother and father.

The narrow decision of the California Supreme Court isn’t just about “live and let live.” State law may require teachers to instruct children as young as kindergarteners about marriage. (Education Code § 51890.) If the gay marriage ruling is not overturned, TEACHERS COULD BE REQUIRED to teach young children there is no difference between gay marriage and traditional marriage.

We should not accept a court decision that may result in public schools teaching our kids that gay marriage is okay. That is an issue for parents to discuss with their children according to their own values and beliefs. It shouldn’t be forced on us against our will.

Some will try to tell you that Proposition 8 takes away legal rights of gay domestic partnerships. That is false. Proposition 8 DOES NOT take away any of those rights and does not interfere with gays living the lifestyle they choose.

However, while gays have the right to their private lives, they do not have the right to redefine marriage for everyone else.

CALIFORNIANS HAVE NEVER VOTED FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE. If gay activists want to legalize gay marriage, they should put it on the ballot. Instead, they have gone behind the backs of voters and convinced four activist judges in San Francisco to redefine marriage for the rest of society. That is the wrong approach.

Voting YES on Proposition 8 RESTORES the definition of marriage that was approved by over 61% of voters. Voting YES overturns the decision of four activist judges. Voting YES protects our children.

Please vote YES on Proposition 8 to RESTORE the meaning of marriage

From the Bear wrote on Oct 11, 2008 11:06 AM:OUR CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION—the law of our land—SHOULD GUARANTEE THE SAME FREEDOMS AND RIGHTS TO EVERYONE—NO ONE group SHOULD be singled out to BE TREATED DIFFERENTLY.

In fact, our nation was founded on the principle that all people should be treated equally. EQUAL PROTECTION UNDER THE LAW IS THE FOUNDATION OF AMERICAN SOCIETY.

That’s what this election is about—equality, freedom, and fairness, for all.

Marriage is the institution that conveys dignity and respect to the lifetime commitment of any couple. PROPOSITION 8 WOULD DENY LESBIAN AND GAY COUPLES that same DIGNITY AND RESPECT.

That’s why Proposition 8 is wrong for California.

Regardless of how you feel about this issue, the freedom to marry is fundamental to our society, just like the freedoms of religion and speech.

PROPOSITION 8 MANDATES ONE SET OF RULES FOR GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES AND ANOTHER SET FOR EVERYONE ELSE. That’s just not fair. OUR LAWS SHOULD TREAT EVERYONE EQUALLY.

In fact, the government has no business telling people who can and cannot get married. Just like government has no business telling us what to read, watch on TV, or do in our private lives. We don’t need Prop. 8; WE DON’T NEED MORE GOVERNMENT IN OUR LIVES.

REGARDLESS OF HOW ANYONE FEELS ABOUT MARRIAGE FOR GAY AND LESBIAN COUPLES, PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE SINGLED OUT FOR UNFAIR TREATMENT UNDER THE LAWS OF OUR STATE. Those committed and loving couples who want to accept the responsibility that comes with marriage should be treated like everyone else.

DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS ARE NOT MARRIAGE.

When you’re married and your spouse is sick or hurt, there is no confusion: you get into the ambulance or hospital room with no questions asked. IN EVERYDAY LIFE, AND ESPECIALLY IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS, DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIPS ARE SIMPLY NOT ENOUGH. Only marriage provides the certainty and the security that people know they can count on in their times of greatest need.

EQUALITY UNDER THE LAW IS A FUNDAMENTAL CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEE. Prop. 8 separates one group of Californians from another and excludes them from enjoying the same rights as other loving couples.

Forty-six years ago I married my college sweetheart, Julia. We raised three children—two boys and one girl. The boys are married, with children of their own. Our daughter, Liz, a lesbian, can now also be married—if she so chooses.

All we have ever wanted for our daughter is that she be treated with the same dignity and respect as her brothers—with the same freedoms and responsibilities as every other Californian.

My wife and I never treated our children differently, we never loved them any differently, and now the law doesn’t treat them differently, either.

Each of our children now has the same rights as the others, to choose the person to love, commit to, and to marry.

Don’t take away the equality, freedom, and fairness that everyone in California—straight, gay, or lesbian—deserves.

Sure, the seats are comfy and the water is wet, yet it diminishes me and mine as less than fully human.

Civil unions is a clear message that we are not worthy---it's marriage lite, without full protection or respect for our commitment to each other, leaving us and our children vulnerable to the vagaries of popular opinion.

Of course I understand why people fight it, because it weakens the arsenal of bigotry---if we call it marriage, it 'legitimizes' homosexuality. Give the blessings of government sanctioned marriage to 'the gays' and our children will grow up thinking it's, gasp, "normal". How ever will we be able to teach them 'the gays' are demons when they are registering for gifts at the china store? The most threatening thing about gay marriage is that it makes us less threatening.

According to the CA Constitution (Article 2, section 10 (c), 'The Legislature may amend or repeal referendum statutes. It may amend or repeal an initiative statute by another statute that becomes effective only when approved by the electors unless the initiative statute permits amendment or repeal without their approval.' There is a plausible argument that the California Supreme Court violated the DUE PROCESS clause of the US Constitution. The US Supreme Court could easily pull rank on the California Supreme Court. Apollo's hope that limiting the decision to intrepretation of the California Constitution to preclude a appeal to the US Supreme Court is just a hope that the US Supreme Court will not employ 'legal jujitsu'. In the new world of political courts pandering to special interests, such a hope will not last long. Since Prop 8 was already in process, that is the first step in the journey.

And when Paulson says that the Treasury Department was working on a plan to buy equity in "a broad array of financial institutions," he really means he is nationalizing those institutions. This is the stake that will destroy the monster of Reaganomics and it's almost as if FDR himself is pounding it in. I've lost plenty in this catastrophe, but at least as a liberal I get the satisfaction of saying "I told you so." The weakness, the basis in fear and the hyperbole are the same nonsense today regarding homosexual marriage as regarding inter-racial marriage many decades ago, the prime difference is that today there is the vain attempt to hide outright discrimination, whereas no such attempt was made back then.

Then get's into a fantasical theory on how upper echelons of the “have’s” and “have mores” are prefered, and he is simply "collateral damage."

Let me explain something to ya Bub...
Government is supposed to represent everyone equally, even those you appear to loathe, those who make more than $250K a year. It is not they who have received the greatest benefit of government resources, it is the middle & lower classes, by far.
Entitlement, upon entitlement build percisely for the lower & middle-classes, And paid for by the Upper incomes.
This is a country where the top 1% pay nearly 40% {39.6%} of all income taxes, for precisely the benefit of the lower & middle classes.
This is a country where the top 5% pay 60% of all the income taxes in this country.
This is a country where the top 10% pay 70% of all the income taxes in this country.
This is a country where the top 25% pay 86% of all income taxes.
This is a country where the top 50% of taxpayers pay 96% of all income taxes, precisely for the benefit of the lower & middle income people.
The lowest imcome people in this country pay 4% of the entire load.
Nearly 65 million person's fall into this bracket, with 49 million of them not paying ANY Federal income taxes, and most receiving back, by virtue of EIC, a welfare stipend.
So, Bud... DON'T lecture us on how we don't care. Even with historically lower tax brackets, the Rich in this great country are their brother's keeper.
As opposed to your candidate, who like's to talk a good game, but still has a half-brother living on $12 bucks a year, while he enjoyed a $4 million dollar income last year.
Shared sacrifice? NOT for NObama.
And that's a matter of personal judgement & charactor, you've conveniently over looked. The moral of this story, goes like this.
You ain't his brother, and you are heavy.

Bigotry Against Scouts wrote on Oct 11, 2008 1:47 PM:Yes on 8 has a valid point. In San Diego, the scouts were being attacked as a bigoted organization for not trusting gays as leaders. The scouts judged that they were not morally straight. At the same time scouts were being attacked, a leader at Camp Mataguay (in easter San Diego County) was molesting youth at the camp over a 4 year period!

'A former Boy Scout camp administrator has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to charges that he molested teen-age boys.
Glenn Jordan, 33, admitted to 12 counts, including felony child abuse, sodomy and distributing pornography to a minor.'
www.nctimes.com/articles/2001/02/23/export3875.txt

'Jordan, whom witnesses described as a friendly and approachable "father figure" to many of the scouts, was found to have provided alcohol to boys at his camp cabin, which was equipped with a hot tub.'

'One boy, now 17 years old, testified during a preliminary hearing that he was sexually molested by Jordan. Other witnesses said Jordan would grab them frequently and make sexual remarks.'

The Scout's policy to protect the child was perfectly logical. Yet, Alf would probably claim that the Scouts were being illogical. Thus, Alf's admitted dislike of the scouting organization is not based on any logic whatsoever. a cover for his own sentiments, which have not logical or evidential basis whatsoever.

I suspect that Alf and Apollo will be the first to attack all organizations opposing gay marriage as bigoted, and attempt to have tax exemptions repealed, teachers removed from position, and many other attacks on such 'illogical' religious 'zealots'. It is only logical.

"...unregulated capitalism."

Dude, I don't know from what Planet you hail from, but...
This is NOT and NEVER has been an unregulated system of capitalism, since the days of the founders.
What we have today is government intervensionism... let me rephrase that... LIBERAL government interventionism. With a particular bent towards socialism, as brought to us by the importing of it by FDR.

The legacy of FDR is the melding of the two, capitalism & socialism, which in time leads to a type of merchantilism.
And it is something that Adam Smith wrote plenty about.
You see, within a merchantilist structure, companies, business must go to the political power brokers to either gain tax or regulatory advantage, or they seek to have imposed upon their competition more tax & regulatory schemes. It is not a truly free market.
The socialist bent within the New Democrat party, is this rebirth of what FDR termed his second bill of rights, as we currently have seen in the housing market. Housing was a key plank of FDR's 2nd bill.
Prior to the repeal of Glass-Stegell, was this push by Liberals to make homeownership mandatory, and to do it by punishing lenders who would not subscribe to risky persons with bad credit historys. Under threat of legal prosecution for "racism" aka "red-lining", Lenders sought a way out, which.. the government handed to them, by way of Fannie & Freddie, and Franklin Delano Raines. The Securitization of risky loans thru Fannie/Freddie. Rather than be legally prosecuted, and since this GSE (government sponsored enterprise) would buy them up from them, removing the risky loan from their responsibility, they sold them.
I hear plenty of anger about these so-called Titans of Wall Street, but no so much about the Titans of the GSE's.
Who collected bonuses based upon accounting fraud, way in advance of the failure.
This is not the fault of "unregulated capitalism", that's a lie.
It is the result of Affirmative Action programs disguised as homeownership.
Just as this inexperienced presidential candidate, is both the affirmative action candidate, and Mascot politics.

The post from "Reardon" (3:37pm) purports to reply to me, but actually has nothing to do with what I posted.
I said nothing about a tax on assets.
I had responded to an earlier post from "Ron" in which he joined the "nation of elitist whiners" who complain about the fairness of taxes based on the percentage various quintiles pay of the total. I noted that, apart from information about income assets, the point was utterly irrelevant.
It was not about taxing assets, about which I said NOTHING; it was solely a gauge of wealth in terms of assessing fairness.
But I suppose that was just way too nuanced, huh?

More than 1,100 federal and state benefits and laws that other couples can enjoy through marriage that make lesbians gays transgender individuals be unequal under the law.

Without marriage an employer in California can decide to deny any medical benefits to a partner even if they are in a domestic partnership.

Marriage licenses are civil contracts issued by the govt and not by the local churches.

The Constitution's separation of church and state guarantees freedom of religion against govt intrusions into spiritual and religious matters.

Amending the Constitution to restrict marriage can also affect your freedom of religion and speech because it opens a breach in the law that separates church and state.

A ban on interracial marriage was lifted by the Calif Supreme Court in 1948, when an unconstitutional referendum proposal said interracial couples would destroy family values.

Why stop the "pursuit of happiness" when the happiness and equality of gays and lesbians is not taking any rights away from the majority.

He calls me a "lying, collectivist, Marxist activist" and a "brainwashed twit" and yet, by failing to address a single point of substance, he reveals the intellectual bankruptcy of his inability to engage in critical thinking.
But, oh yeah, this is the same guy (at least the same screen name) who once tried to claim that the writings of Erik von Kuehnelt-Leddihn explained the Founders' belief that freedom and equality were mutually incompatible, while I maintain that one cannot have true freedom without equality (of opportunity, not oucomes). I pointed out the silliness of quoting a work that espoused a return to MONARCHY as being compatible with the Founders who rebelled against that form of tyranny, and he had to sheepishly slink away and basically concede that he had no familiar with the works that HE cited.

Now "hardtack" calls people Marxist. No "hardtack," I oppose Marxism, Communism, Socialism. True liberal market economics creates a structure, a foundation, a framework of protective rules that -- just like rules of sports make possible an infinite range of strategies and rules of the road enable and infinite range of possible destinations -- rules to protect the various elements of the market such as workers, consumers and the shared infrastructure strengthen true Capitalism, just as its founder, Adam Smith wrote.
It is regulated market entrepreneurship that saved this nation from Socialism after Republican DEREGULATED markets had run our economy into 3rd world depravity.
And now it is REPUBLICANS who are turning to pure Marxist Socialism as they take the actual ownership of companies after their economic theory has been AGAIN utterly discredited as they drive our economy into utter devastation.
It will AGAIN be Democrats who will again rescue this nation from Republican Socialism.

Stop calling names, "hardtack," and see if you can learn a little basic history and economics and stop supporting the failed theories of Hoovenomics, Reaganomics, Keatingomics, Bushomics and McCainomics.

You know nothing of my screen name. I have several, for use with different issues.
In discussing the presidential campaign, I am proclaiming my confidence that Obama CAN - YES WE CAN!
The difference with McCain is that his involvement and "bad judgment" was directly related to the financial collapse of the S&L's under Reagan's deregulation, which McCain supported. It is directly tied to the most critical issue of today and shows that Republicans in general, and McCain in particular, have learned nothing from the failures of Hoover, Reagan, Keating and Bush - with McCain representing just more of the same.

As for Ayers, a letter to the editor of the New York Times 10-10-08 BY THE PROSECUTOR OF AYERS CASE (which is still up on their website today) objected to their characterization of the dismissal as being based on "prosecutorial misconduct," and laid the blame at the feet of Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell (later himself convicted in Watergate).
I dispute your claim that Ayers "bragged" about the bombings or even admitted them. Since the case was dismissed and he never confronted a jury verdict, he is not subject to protection under "double jeopardy" and, if he had any such admission, he could be arrested and tried again (there is also no statute of limitations on terrorism).
Ayers himself has clarified the quote that Limbaugh keeps repeating, from a New York Times interview that was, ironically, published the morning of September 11, 2001. The much interview was much earlier, and the papers were printed and delivered way before the attack occurred, so the timing was an unfortunate coincidence.
The interviewer asked if he was remorseful for his actions. Without saying WHAT he did, he said he did what he believed was right at the time, so could not be remorseful. As a separate statement, but juxtaposed by the paper next to that statement, he said that he "didn't do enough." He later clarified that he meant he did not do enough to stop the war; it was not a reference to any (alleged) violent activities, but that the paper put the two separate statements together.
Again, how can you say it reflects on Obama's bad judgment. When they met briefly in 1995, six years before that interview, Obama had no way of knowing about this guy who did something when he was 8 years old and in Indonesia. At that time the guy was a respected educator. They were not close. The guy held a "meet and greet" coffee for him, one of hundreds who did so. That's what campaigns do. Ayers gave him one donation of $200 - wanna compare to how much Keating gave, and how many occasions?
Obama never "palled" with Ayers, traveled with him, or was close to him. Keating was. The investigation you referred to noted that, of the Keating 5, only McCain had close personal ties.
To a scandal tied directly to the key problem now facing this nation: the implosion of our financial markets.

The post from "Reardon" (8:03pm) continues to try to deflect the issue to what "Ron" raised (and my response to it) to some imaginary reporting of assets that I said nothing about.
"Ron" cited a list of quintiles of taxpayers, and what percent taxes they paid (though he did not document his assertions and his "facts" in the past have been notoriously unreliable).
I simply noted that, even if accurate, his point is WORTHLESS without equivalent information on income and assets. If he cannot provide it, then that is his problem. I didn't even say the information was available, though I imagine that there are credible census estimates of wealth by quintile, even if not linked to individual taxpayers.
The point is irrelevant. If "Ron" wants to make assertions about fairness that demand data he can't provide, maybe he should think more carefully before running off at the keyboard. And maybe YOU should address your comments to the one who raised the issue, not the one who pointed out the ridiculousness of it.

Apollo wrote on Oct 11, 2008 9:20 PM:Re: Apollo This (9:07 p.m.)
The Constitution of California prohibits MANDATORY requirements to discriminate based on gender.
There are many instances in which private individuals or organizations are permitted to make the choice to discriminate, but they can not be required to do so.
If a law were to be passed REQUIRING separate restrooms for men and women, it would be unconstitutional. But if private organizations are allowed to have separate restrooms, not a problem.

And frankly, I would have no objection at all to unisex restrooms, especially with private stalls. It would reduce women's common (and valid) complaint when they wait in long lines while we breeze in and out with no line. I have been in men's rooms when impatient women came in to use ours instead of their own and used a private stall. Didn't bother me at all.

Hmm. Maybe we SHOULD outlaw separate restrooms based on gender.
