PREP FOOTBALL: Mt. Carmel uses strong ground game to beat Orange Glen

Mt. Carmel rushes for 312 yards in win over Patriots

By RICHARDSON MIRON - For the North County Times | Saturday, October 11, 2008 10:13 AM PDT

RANCHO PENASQUITOS ---- Wesley Wallace, the leader of Mt. Carmel High's passing attack, barely had his number called Friday night.

He didn't mind one bit.

The junior quarterback was only asked to throw the ball three times as the Sundevils' ground attack exploded for 312 yards and Mt. Carmel rolled to a 42-21 victory over visiting Orange Glen.

"That's what we do, we run the football," Sundevils coach Darren Spence said after the Valley League showdown. "We tried to throw a couple times, but our timing was off. But with the way our O-line played, we were able to keep running. This was nice for us."

The Sundevils (3-3, 1-1) didn't waste much time jumping ahead against the Patriots (1-5, 0-2).

Orange Glen, which entered the game having been outscored 56-0 in the first quarter, saw that trend continue as Mt. Carmel grabbed a 14-0 advantage in the opening 12 minutes.

Mike Nelson's 1-yard burst capped a nine-play, 60-yard drive for the Sundevils' first touchdown. A few minutes later, the run-happy Sundevils scored on a 3-yard rush by Kenny James, who electrified the home crowd with 152 of his team-high 164 yards before halftime.

Unfortunately for Orange Glen, the Sundevils' dominance didn't stop at the end of the first quarter as Mt. Carmel scored three more touchdowns before intermission. The scores were delivered on the ground by Shayne Khalil (3 yards), James (10 yards) and Dennis Bowman, who hauled in a 10-yard pass from Troy McClelland on a halfback-option pass.

The Sundevils' only touchdown after halftime came on a 44-yard streak by running back Miles Sharp, who finished with 92 yards on just three carries.

The second half was much better for Orange Glen, which finally got on track offensively. Senior running back Andrew Early toted the rock 30 times for 213 yards in the final 24 minutes. He finished with 41 carries for a game-high 246 yards, including two of the Patriots' three second-half touchdowns on runs of 14 and 2 yards.

That performance earned his opponents' respect as Early carried the ball on 71 percent of the Patriots' snaps.

"That No. 24 is one tough son of a gun," Spence said.

Early believes his team, which has lost five straight by an average of 26.2 points per game, can be more competitive if it gets on track earlier in games.

"We came out slow in the first half," Early said. "We have to pick it up. But our offensive line did a great job today in the second half. We just didn't come out like we wanted."

Despite the loss, Orange Glen coach Kris Plash praised his team for giving everything it had for 48 minutes.

"I'm very proud of our players," Plash said. "They come to practice and are willing to work hard every time, knowing that they've got tough odds. I'm just so proud that not one player has quit on this team."

Proud Program wrote on Oct 11, 2008 12:14 AM:Although this wasn't a win, Orange Glen kept on fighting. The kind of spirit that these kids show week after week is just fantastic. Sure, we would all like to see a lot more wins, but seeing these guys out working like this and never giving in is a lot more than we see in a lot of places.

Keep at it, Patriots!

Lucky wrote on Oct 11, 2008 12:15 AM:Thank goodness Orange Glen has such a strong academic program going. It doesn't look like a lot of students are going places on football scholarships.

Over again at halftime wrote on Oct 11, 2008 7:36 AM:35 to 0 at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Its sad that you have 1 guy taking 71 percent of the snaps after halftime. You score 2 touchdown in the 4th quarter after the game is out of reach. I know there is more then 1 football player on this team. Instead of trying to get other people in the mix the coach uses his tunnel vision again. Mt Carmel scored only 1 TD the rest of the game. They did not need to. Do you see a pattern here. Thanks coaches for playing your 2nd and 3rd stringers again and not running the score up. Hey coach do you know how utilize all your players. Have you heard of a pass play. And for you parents who are still in denial. We scored against their scrubs.

to over again wrote on Oct 11, 2008 9:07 AM:newsflash say what you want. You get the ball in your best players hands as much as possible. check stats Andy Early is top six runner in the county. What would you do with the ball if you were coach? The O-line deserves credit also for the yards Andy has run. Pump up and quit putting down a team that is giving all they can on the field. You dont have to say anything.

to lucky and Duh wrote on Oct 11, 2008 9:15 AM:how many schools have alot of kids getting scholarships for football. Most schools that do have only a coulpe of players that will get full rides to college. OG varsity players have worked hard in the classroom to bring their team GPA above 3.0. Do you know how many teams are above 3.0? Give the kids credit Im sure there are kids whose GPA is way above what yours was in High school

to over at halftime wrote on Oct 11, 2008 9:18 AM:Watch the film!! There were still first string players in as well as some of the other games. Og is lacking talent bottom line the mistakes when they change the plays have cost us the game many times. Before you call the coaches and kids out check out the mistakes that your kid may be making to get pulled from the game. If you don't like the way things are going why don't go have your kid play somewhere else because I am sure he would probably be playing the sides lines at Esco and SP. Our program is lacking and the kids don't need to hear it everytime they go home I am sure it reflects how they play the game each week.

why the first half is a blow out every game. Can you?

According to some of you, there is only 1 player on this team. What a joke.

Ask the kids how they feel about the coaches, and youll find the truth. we score in the 4th qtr because are kids dont give up. check yourselves

Earlys yardage has come after the 3rd quarter starts. The O line is doing a great job after the 3rd quarter starts.
Let see some scoring the first half before you start to tell us all how Early is number 2 in rushing county wide. This is nothing to brag about
until proven production is seen in the first half. Football is a team sport. Not a 1 man show to pad stats when the game is out of reach.

I.C. wrote on Oct 11, 2008 2:35 PM:Andy Early has earned every bit of his playing time and stats. He is the heart and soul of OG Football. Nobody practices or plays harder than he does. And he's a terrific young man too. He will be sorely missed next year when he's at a Division 1 school on a full ride because of his 4.7 GPA, community service and leadership! If you're mad because your kid isn't playing or if you have a better plan, show up at practice and see who's working hard and executing. The stands are filled with wanna be coaches. Enough already. I am sick of hearing these kids and coaches put down. My kid is enjoying his high school experience at OG--quit trying to relive yours.

typical.. wrote on Oct 11, 2008 2:57 PM:another game another blowout loss for OG and another section of comments filled with parents trying to defend OG...OG is no good sorry to say.Andy Early a gritty performance but really the bulk of his stats come in the second half when the games already over..Earlys number 6 in the county in rushing..but number 1 in carries by over 20..he has the lowest YPC average among any of the top backs...obviously hes going to put up big rushing numbers HE GETS THE BALL MORE THAN ANYBODY...71 percent of the snaps go to him...geez but rick was right they need to get him the ball in space..Reverses screens end arounds...OG needs to empty out the playbook because they will not even come close to Ramona if all they run is a bunch of dive plays

Makes me Sick wrote on Oct 11, 2008 4:25 PM:Everyone thinks they are a coach. I am sick and tired of all the comments about how terribe OG is and how Coach Plash has no clue. To be honest, parents have no clue. If they can do better, why don't they go out there and coach because I guarntee Coach Plash spends more time with your kids then you even do. People just need to zip their lip and support Og by being positive, not negative. Oh by the way, what a practice because if your kid played, he would probably get hurt. So in regards to kids not getting in, Coach Plash is doing them a favor. Keep up the good work Coach Plash, your doing a great job and these kids are learning to become men regardless of score.

your typical to wrote on Oct 11, 2008 4:37 PM:over 20 carries more than anyone else, check your stats Nick Ricciardulli from Poway has 3 less carries 133 for 754 yds Early carries 136 yards 762. This shows Poways runs alot also. Ricciardulli is a very good player avgs around 5.6 yds per carry where does that put Early. Way ahead of you.

typical and Rick wrote on Oct 11, 2008 4:50 PM:Do you watch the game the quarterback can't complete the passes they get intercepted way to many times. So you have to run the ball most of the time. So everyone needs to just leave these guys alone and let them do what they can do with the talent or the lack of talent that they have. This subject is getting really old can anyone point out the good instead of all the bad. It is just sour grapes.

to typical wrote on Oct 11, 2008 5:05 PM:No one is saying that ok is good. The bulk of the team are trying to play a good game and they have never played football before high school so what do you expect from the program. You try to do the best you can with what you have. And this isn't pop warner football if you don't know what you are doing you shouldn't be on the field because you could come out with a serious injury. There is no minimum play in high school football. So to all the parents out there complaining maybe you should find out what you kid is really doing to get better and what kind of effort they are putting into the game you would be suprised some of the kids don't really want to get into the game.

props to Early wrote on Oct 11, 2008 6:02 PM:Thank you for not transferring to another school if we could have some of the transfers you wounldn't get beat up so much. You are a good kid and you deserve all the play time you are getting. Don't listen to the jealous parents in these blogs.

glen ridge road wrote on Oct 11, 2008 6:35 PM:Some freshman teams have B games on Saturdays; too bad they don't do that on varsity then OG would be competetive. Running up stats in the 2nd half doesn't make a team gritty. It means that the other team has their 2nd and 3rd string in the game. I would hope that OG's 1rst string could score against a teams 3rd string. I guess the point is th team doesn't give up but who cares. If OG played everyone elses B team on Saturday then they might have a winning season.

typical again wrote on Oct 11, 2008 7:29 PM:Yes Ive seen most of OGs games this year...Shovel passes, screensbubble screens and short passes are not that hard to complete...OG doesnt have a James Johnson lining up on 1 side of the field but they can still line up early all over the formation...Open up the playbook OG..I can name the 5 plays that you run of the top of my head...and if I can so can every other team in the valley league...well im done apparently people dont like it when other people voice their opinions about OG football...because Kris Plash is doing so good over there we have no right to say anything..gotta be kidding me

to glen ridge and typical wrote on Oct 11, 2008 8:37 PM:Og team is made up of mostly 2 and 3rd string players the 1st stringers are at Esco and SP so how much can any coach do with this kind of talent the one thing these kids have is heart and with all this bull going around they won't have a heart by the time you guys are done with them because I know several kids that read these blogs and you parents should be ashamed of yourself for talking like this. They do have other plays ask your sons but they don't follow them all the time because some of the players haven't studied their play books and mess up the plays.

to typical wrote on Oct 11, 2008 8:41 PM:I would like to see you do better. The next time you are at an OG game why don't you sit on the other side so we don't have to listen to your negativity about our boys and the coaches we all hear it and it ruins the game for all of us.

Coach wrote on Oct 11, 2008 9:49 PM:Listen, other than Early OG does not have that much to work with. He needs to get the ball. I don't care what half it is Rick. You should have applied and gotten the job but obviously you applied and got denied or you just are the average monday morning coach. Sorry parents, but most of these kids would not play at SP and Esco because of a lack of talent, Coach Plash is doing the best he can with the hand he was dealt. Parents need to bombard the district office with why they are still allowing some transfers to SP and demand that it stop. Keep working hard OG, hold your head high and don't give up, you have a tuff road ahead just follow Andy Early's example and leadership. Best wishes Coach

spice up the game. do some unexpected things. You will have to after they shut the run down. I have been to 2 games and left at half time, My sons don't play but I know a lot of the kids and parents. I think you fail o realize you have some other game breakers on the team. For whatever reason they are not in the game plan is the coaches

to coach wrote on Oct 12, 2008 5:26 AM:This is they type of mindset in this community that has been running rampant for years. Andy is such a nice boy. His mom helps out all the time. Lets make sure he is the star. Your close minded way of thinking is 1 reason why the sports programs are in the dumpster. Parents move their kids from this school because of this type of mindset. Use the other players you have that are pretty good and score some damn points in the first half. I know if I were to coach in the first half I would score some points. Like someone said earlier.
Its a team sport. Your comments hurt more then they help because what you are saying is there is only 1 person on the team that is worth a crap. Open your mind up.

to the clueless people wrote on Oct 12, 2008 8:23 AM:FYI it doesn't matter if you volunteer or who you are if your kid is good and knows the plays he will be in the game. Example: the starting quarterback last year wasn't doing what the coach wanted so they took him out of the game and he was the booster presidents son. Coaches from other schools said that maybe 7 kids would be able to go to another school and start because they just don't have the skills needed to win a game.

to if I were coach wrote on Oct 12, 2008 8:35 AM:lets see the names of these playmakers you say you would have score in the first half. maybe if the coach seen these so called better kids excel in practice they would start in the games. it all starts in practice and im sure you never ever go and see practice. The program has been bad since V.C opened. Lack of talent but full of heart. keep working hard coaches and players. I'll still root for you. I dont even have a kid on the team but believe in the coaches

Love those Patriots wrote on Oct 12, 2008 9:27 AM:I don't know who I am more sick of...whiney parents that leave at halftime or don't show up at all, complaining kids, coaches in the stands, and all this finger pointing. I wouldn't expect the coaches to tell me how to do my job and I wouldn't tell him how to do theirs. I love the quote from Teddy Roosevelt but I wish I knew who said "My country, love it or leave it". The same could apply to your high school, "Our high school, love it or leave it". I would never ever my kid's or a friend's kid's game because of the score. That's shameful. It's our job to support our kids no matter what. It just a game.

It doesnt matter who coaches a team that doesnt have very many talented kids. The results would be the same. Just look at past 10 yrs of OG football. These kids work as hard as they can on and off the field. Thanks to this coaching staff. Why print comments putting them down. Please print this one. Thank you sir.

New coaches and a new attitude, only difference SM is being somewhat competitive..Coach Pulu will make Plash look like a fool with the defensive schemes he throws out there..
Man what was OG thinking comeing off a 1 win season and a coach coming from a state champioship team on the market and they dont even give him a call or anything? wow

I didn't see that much competitiveness against Ramona or it wouldn't have been such a big blowout.

college coach wrote on Oct 12, 2008 6:16 PM:Please, if you are going to write into blogs please have some knowledge. Two weeks ago somone commented on the offense being similar to Esco's, sorry they run a two back system OG clearly runs a one back. Also, to the person who commented about OG doing well against scrubs. Wow! The reality is that is who your kids can match up against them. Ten years ago when my freind Rob Gilster, (CIF Champ coach in VC you might have heard of him) left OG with 1 and 9 record. Would you people have blamed it on the coaching then? Also, for those whose are complaining about the one player they have playing both ways, isn't it sad that he is playing both ways and is one of the toughest hitters on D also. Wake up fans, OG has not had a winning season since the VC split. Although I would like to see good things happen to coach Plash and his coaching staff, Mt. Carmel Coach said it right in his comments in the Union Tribune. OG doesn't have a QB to pass. Everyone knows that every team put all their men in the box. When OG attempted to Pass they were 0 of 6 with two interceptions. Their QB is young, any educated person knows it takes time and experience. Good Luck OG! Keep in there.

40 blogs again wrote on Oct 12, 2008 10:21 PM:So how did we really wind up with 40 comments about the Orange Glen football game?

Is it really football? Or, rather, is this just another forum to lash out at what we see as representing the Latino side of our community?

The reality is that there is nothing wrong with the Orange Glen football program other than having a school population that is 80% Latino which has been brought up on soccer.

There is nothing wrong with the Orange Glen academic program other than having a population of 60% English Language Learners, 86% socio-economically disadvantaged (translated as poor) kids whose parents haven't done much for them

Given those facts, the school seems to be doing pretty darned well.

A lot of people in these comments are complaining about all the parents defending the program. Well, if the parents are defending the program, it must have something going for it.

why do we give in to this wrote on Oct 13, 2008 8:53 AM:To all the defenders it doesn't matter what you say there is someone the will have something to say back. I am sure the people who are pointing fingers don't even have a clue to what is really going on with the program and could careless on helping to make it any better. So next week we all need to just stay away from this blog and let the idiots have their say because they know it all!!!!! Thanks you to the college coach you said all that needs to be said.
