A 100-acre fire that reportedly started Monday on the Camp Pendleton forced the evacuation of residents and businesses on and near the sprawling Marine Corps base that hugs northern Oceanside. No injuries were reported. And no homes had been destroyed as of 11 p.m. Evacuees were being directed to the official Red Cross shelter at El Camino High School on Rancho Del Oro Drive in Oceanside. Fire and base officials said the fire apparently was sparked from an explosives exercise on the base.

As for 'fire risk'... guess you could care less about Marines being prepared to defend you. Only train when the conditions are perfect, since we know conditions in Iraq are always pleasant, not windy, rainy and cool. Yah... if you know of a time since Camp Pendleton has been there that the Marines have caused widespread damage to their civilian neighbors, you let us know. I am sure they appreciate your quickness to blame.

a little support wrote on Oct 13, 2008 4:09 PM:Why so quick to condemn the Marines? Do you really have no faith that they do or don't take the weather or fire danger seriously? Everytime there is a fire on base, people are so quick to get upset. Do you not want these Marines to train? Sure, but not in your "backyard" right? Should have thought abou that when you moved here. How about a little support and faith that they are doing the right thing and "handling" it.

Jeez! Who is worse, people who jump to blame the marines when there isn't any evidence, or people who can't even stand to hear citizens question the wisdom of shelling during Santa Anna winds? Who hates freedom more? I think there is some middle ground between "I hate the military" and "I refuse to listen to any criticism of the marines."

fred wrote on Oct 13, 2008 6:04 PM:Pendleton command needs to be responsible regarding fires, and if they aren't someone should be accountable. I support our military, but I'll still be unhappy if they accidentally bomb my house or burn it down. Just because they're in charge of defense of our country does not absolve their responsibility toward the fire safety of citizens and their homes. Two fires in one week during peak fires season is a concern that should be addressed.
SleepingIndianOccupant wrote on Oct 13, 2008 6:11 PM:Views from Sleeping Indian, close to Burma... lots of smoke, but smoke is turning white, seems to be spreading out rather than going up in a tower. Last report I heard from NBCSanDiego.com streaming video was that winds had died down somewhat making it easier for aircraft to do their job. Winds also shifted to W/NW. This is too vivid of a reminder of last years evacuations...
Although off topic and non related, I wish that all who are speaking out against our military would evacuate to another country - preferably China, Korea or even Cuba, where they can get a taste of what it is like to NOT have our freedoms. I'm sure after a few months of being treated like a citizen of that country they would be begging to come back and ready to kiss the ground that our military march on, defend and protect! God bless all involved... firemen, evacuees, family, etc. God bless our armed forces!

When a (potentially) man-made disaster happens, it would be wise to determine the source, and put a plan in force to minimize the potential for it to happen again. We should learn from our mistakes, not hide from them. And we should not blindly follow anyone. Even the Marines are human.

The residents can go back home now, areas evacuated in the city won't reopen to the public at 10 p.m., said Mark Peebles, spokesman for the Forest Service Incident Management Team.
In addition, evacuees of Serra Mesa on Camp Pendleton may return to their homes, Peebles said.

Peebles, who provided the update at 12:30 p.m., said the base's San Luis Rey gate is also closed, but the Fallbrook gate is open.
