PHS students to give concert
POWAY ---- Poway High School's annual Fall Choral Concert will be performed at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.
Titled "Poetry in Music," the concert will include a variety of traditional choral music based on the poetry of William Shakespeare, William Butler Yeats, Sara Teasdale and Robert Louis Stevenson. All five choirs will be featured, with 150 students participating. Students will sing in several languages, including Japanese, Latin, Spanish and French.
Tickets cost $8; $5 for students, senior citizens and military. Tickets will be available at the door.
PPH Board candidates forum set
ESCONDIDO ---- The League of Women Voters of Escondido and Neighboring Communities will host a Palomar Pomerado Health Board of Directors candidates forum from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 14 in Graybill Auditorium at Palomar Medical Center, 555 East Valley Parkway.
All eight candidates have been invited. Moderator will be Administrative Law Judge and LWV Voter Services Director Patrick Cooney.

Bilbray, Rubin to speak at meeting
ESCONDIDO ---- Escondido Republican Women Federated will meet at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 15 at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane.
U.S. Rep. Brian Bilbray will give an update on the recent bailout and field questions from the audience. Lunch will follow. Bob Rubin, McCain/Palin 2008 Southern California regional chairman, will speak at 12:30 p.m.

Learn about Escondido's history
ESCONDIDO ---- Wendy Barker, director of the Escondido History Center, will present an illustrated lecture about how the city has grown and changed since its incorporation 120 years ago at 2 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Santa Fe Depot in Grape Day Park.

ESCONDIDO ---- American Legion Auxiliary Unit 149 will host a parking lot sale from 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 18 in the parking lot of the Veterans Memorial Building, 230 E. Park Ave. Proceeds will benefit veterans, children and youths, the Girls State program and other community projects.
Republican Club to host speaker
ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Republican Club will hold a lunch meeting at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 20 at Cocina del Charro restaurant, 525 N. Quince.
Frank Kacer, founder and executive director of the Christian Citizenship Council of San Diego, will provide information about the 12 state propositions that are on the Nov. 4 ballot. Attendees are encouraged to bring their sample ballots.

Church craft fair set for Oct 17-18
ESCONDIDO ---- The Artisans of First United Methodist Church will hold their 12th annual Holiday Craft Fair from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 17 and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Oct. 18 at the church, 341 S. Kalmia St.
The fair will include crafts for gifts, the holidays and the home, as well as bargain specials and items for Chargers fans. "Grama's Kitchen" will offer jams, jellies, pickles and homemade baked goods. Gift baskets also will be available.
Also, the group will serve a chicken pot pie dinner from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the church. Cost is $7 per person. Reserve to (858) 592-0834. A silent auction featuring one-of-a-kind items also is planned for Oct. 17. Bidding closes at 7:30 p.m.

Season tickets available for concert series
ESCONDIDO ---- Season memberships are available for the Hidden Valley Community Concert Association's 63rd annual concert series.
The series will feature five concerts in the Center Theater at the California Center of the Arts, Escondido: The Abaca String Band, Oct. 23; The Cleveland Duo & James Umble (piano, violin, and saxophone), Dec. 8; CIYAC medal winners (piano and violin), Jan. 11; Riders of the Purple Sage (Western band), March 22; and the Coastal Cities Jazz Band, May 26.

Workshop for homeowner associations set
ESCONDIDO ---- The Nu Chi Unit of Parliamentarians will offer a workshop for homeowner association boards, committees, other members, and property managers from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Escondido Woman's Club, 751 N. Rose St.
Attendees can learn how to prepare HOA agendas, handle motions and write meeting minutes. The workshop also will include a report on California legislation and the Davis-Stirling Act as they affect HOA meetings. Museum recycling cell phones
SAN MARCOS ---- To help keep old cell phones out of landfills, the San Marcos Historical Society and Museum is participating in a recycling program in which a company repairs old phones for reuse in Third World countries. Free hikes offered at Daley Ranch
ESCONDIDO ---- Free guided nature hikes are offered at Daley Ranch. All trails include steep and/or slippery sections. Bring at least two liters of water; wear a hat, sunscreen and hiking boots or treaded footwear. Youths under 18 must be with an adult. No pets. Unless otherwise noted, meet at the La Honda Drive entrance. A shuttle with handicapped accessibility runs Sundays.

-- 6:30 a.m. Oct. 17, 24 and 31: "Beat the Heat Mystery Walk." Beat the heat by joining naturalist Kathleen Flanagan's early-morning hike. Based on the group's make-up, she will select a trail for a fast-paced, strenuous walk of about 7 miles.
-- 7:30 a.m. Oct. 18: "Fitness Hike." Get a good workout on this 12.4-mile hike around Daley Ranch led by Naturalist Rita Ospelt.
-- 8:30 a.m. Oct. 18: "More Walk, Less Talk." Naturalists Simone Green and Barbara Van Horn will lead a moderately strenuous hike from the La Honda Drive trail head.
-- 3:30 p.m. Oct. 21: "Fitness Hike." Enjoy an afternoon fitness hike led by naturalist Rita Ospelt.
-- 6 p.m. Oct. 21: "Stroll Around the Ranch." Naturalist Michelle Capodice will lead a leisurely hike to the Ranch House and talk about the local plants and animals.
-- 10 a.m. Oct. 25, "Young Naturalists Hike." Kids and their parents can join naturalist DJ summers for a nature hike and learn about one of the plants/animals native to Daley Ranch. The hike will be along the Chaparral Nature Trail and will end with a plant/animal craft at the Jack Creek Picnic Area.
-- 9 a.m. Oct. 26, "Having Fun on the Trails." Naturalist and biologist Carol Stanford will lead a 4-plus-mile hike and talk about plants and animals on the ranch.
