LA COSTA ---- Her team was playing tentatively, and her goalie was being attacked from all sides.

So Fallbrook High field hockey coach Kathy Waite called a first-half timeout and implored her team to hustle.

"We were walking," Waite said."We weren't looking or cutting.

"I asked the girls to be the first to the ball, and they responded."

No. 6 ranked La Costa Canyon continued to dominate the action, but Fallbrook's Christine Russell scored the game's only goal, getting an assist from Lydia Brambilia with 14 minutes, 17 seconds to play to help the No. 7 Warriors escape with a hard-fought 1-0 Avocado League victory on Tuesday afternoon.

"This is really frustrating," La Costa Canyon coach Kim Elmore said. "We had so many chances. We had great shots, but didn't finish."

The Mavericks (6-5-1, 1-1) produced 13 shots on goal, including nine in the first half.

Fallbrook goalie Jahna Jordan, a sophomore, had 12 saves for Fallbrook, including several at point-blank range.

La Costa Canyon had five straight penalty corners midway through the first half. Danielle Pawling launched a shot that skittered across the goal mouth, and Kristen Sondag's shot near the end of the half was stopped by Jordan.

LCC even had a rare penalty shot, but Sondag's shot hit the top of the goal.

"She makes that shot nine times out of 10," Elmore said.

Fallbrook weathered a storm of shots in the last 90 seconds to hold on for the win.

"Honestly, we played well," Elmore said. "Even after the goal, we were attacking.

"Things just didn't go our way."

The Warriors (8-6-1), who played LCC to a 0-0 tie in the Serra Tournament, got great defensive play from Patty Maultsby, Lizzy Eskue and Kyle Little.

"We weren't playing up to our level early in the game," said Maultsby, Fallbrook's sweeper. "We had to get it going, and we did step it up. I'm the last line of defense, and it's my job to get the ball and dribble it out. This is a big win, an important win because our league is so tough. LCC, Torrey Pines (ranked No. 2) and San Pasqual (ranked No. 4) are all good.

"So any win is a big one."

Caitlin Chamberlain and Sarah Chamberlain played well defensively for La Costa Canyon. And Annie Lovell played a great overall game for the Mavericks.

"Our league is a killer," Waite said. "So to steal as win on the road is big, really big."

FH_FAN wrote on Oct 15, 2008 5:15 AM:.. and the LCC PR Machine continues on .. another article full of excuses .. why is any one surprised?? Let's see some articles with bias towards some of the other great athletes in No County.

Q: Will LCC even make it into CIF playoffs this year?

Labutter wrote on Oct 15, 2008 7:29 AM:A: WHO CARES

Gee whiz...another LCC loss and another article describing what went wrong...They get more coverage than the Chargers. Come on NC Times, please report on all of the high schools with equal BIAS. If we want excuses we will listen to the Presidential debates.

warriordad wrote on Oct 15, 2008 8:03 AM:WOW! You guys are continually bitter! Especially towards LCC, They are the 2-time defending cif champion and are the champs until CIF is over. Be happy Field Hockey is getting any coverage. I know your SDA mustangs are the greatest thing since slice bread so say that without putting down another program.

Way to go Warriors!!!!! Keep being scrappy!

hockeylover wrote on Oct 15, 2008 10:02 AM:Great job by Fallbrook in their defeat of LCC. Congratulations to Kathy and the girls but FH_FAN is entirely correct with his interpretation of the article. PS LCC is 3 time defending champ in CIF and not 2 time . ...

warriordad wrote on Oct 15, 2008 10:26 AM:Hockeylover, thanks for the correction. Agree with the Excuses comment by FH_fan, but tired of negative talk!

FH fan wrote on Oct 15, 2008 2:34 PM:I am very glad to see regular coverage of FH in general .. and I also think NCTimes gives better and broader coverage of the local HS sports scene than UT overall.

And congrats are due to the Warriors on there win over LCC ...

hockeylover wrote on Oct 15, 2008 5:07 PM:The NC Times is giving great coverage of Fh and they should be applauded but they are "censoring" comments and showing only what they want the public to see and not what is written.!

HockeyDad wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:27 PM:Today (30 Oct) Fallbrook defeated LCC for the second time (plus a scoreless tie in th Serra Tournament) this season yet in the 28 Oct NC Times LCC moved up from #7 to #6 and the Warriors dropped from #6 to #8. LCC will probably move up further in the rankings after running up the score 9-0 against Escondido.
