PREP FOOTBALL: Ramona has no problem against Orange Glen
By SCOTT BAIR - Staff Writer | ∞
RAMONA ---- The Ramona High football team has cause to be cocky. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 4 in the CIF-San Diego Section, own a perfect 7-0 record and have outscored the opposition 307-54. They have North County's best scoring offense, a stingy defense and depth at the skill positions.
It would seem natural for the Bulldogs to start thinking big picture, especially after trashing Orange Glen 61-7 on Friday evening. A word to the wise: don't bother bringing it up.

These Bulldogs have blinders on. They're only concerned about the next play, the next touchdown, and after a well-earned victory, the next opponent.
"That's the nature of this group," Ramona coach Damon Baldwin said. "Early on, we challenged them to stay in the moment at all times, and they've proven that they're capable of doing that. It's not about who we play. It's about playing hard on every snap. That's what this team does."
The Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0) easily defeated the Patriots (1-6, 0-3) ensuring that Ramona would control its own destiny heading into the toughest stretch of the season. A bye week separates them from a daunting three-game set against a trio of top 10 teams that will determine the Valley League championship.
It will also go a long way into where the Bulldogs are seeded in the Division III playoffs, especially because they've played just one team that's currently above .500.
The focus is always forward, even during the week's preparation.
"The coaching staff watches tape day and night," said Ramona receiver Mike Head, who had four catches for 67 yards and a 75-yard interception return for a touchdown. "I honestly believe that we're the most well-prepared team in the county."
A solid game plan can only produce wins with talent proper execution. This year's Bulldogs have showcased plenty of both. That was a concern with the loss of running back Jarred Gallegos and offensive lineman Justin Godes to injury, but Ramona has carried on strong.
Quarterback Ian Hunt leads an offense loaded with exciting players like Head, receiver Matt Laws and running back Joey Dambrose, who had 135 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries against the Patriots.
Orange Glen struggled once again, giving up 21-unanswered points in the first quarter alone. The Bulldogs dominated from the outset, but Patriots running back Andy Early put up some nice numbers. He had 18 carries for 93 yards and Orange Glen's only touchdown.
Orange Glen coach Kris Plash wasn't happy with the end result, but he was pleased with the effort.
"We were completely overmatched in a game against a very good team," he said. "Going out there and giving maximum effort for four quarters under such circumstances should be commended. The one thing that doesn't show up in the final score is heart. This team played with a lot of heart tonight. There's no discounting that."

Hats off to the OG coaches. Goodness knows you've gotten a lot of abuse, and will continue to get it, just as Rob Gilster did in his final years at Orange Glen, and just as has every coach since then. Keep on building that program and building good kids.

Tony Q wrote on Oct 18, 2008 12:08 AM:Ramona has a well developed offense which will be extrmely difficult for any other team in the county to counteract. Their 4-3-8 alignment is one of the most complicated I have seen utilized in a high school playbook in years. With their depth of skill players and their testing ground for young players in their Pop Warner program, I would imagine that this would be a good program for many years to come. My only question though is their consistent playcalling of the 3-2 right side stunt following the inside trap. That just seemed inane. But, that's probably just my East coastness coming out.
On the otherhand, there defense may have trouble when they get up against some of thetop schoolsin the next few weeks. There seemed to be some real weakness in their underside tackling. There may beneed for some gumbo drilling with this respect. Anyway, they've got a great team with some good respect going on and they should really get tested in the rest of the season.
How we roll. See ya 2 & 6.
I'll buy the coffee

You will get sweet redemption in soccer.
I don't recall a win in soccer for Ramona over OGHS in a long time.
Coach Domingo and his boys will kick butt again.

Go Bulldogs!
Ramona Alum wrote on Oct 18, 2008 9:13 AM:I graduated from Ramona back in 1981 and can really sympathize with Orange Glen. Back in the 70's and early 80's, we couldn't beat anybody, and it seemed like we were everyone's Homecoming opponent. But the community kept heart, kept building the program (slowly), and eventually we have become the power you see today.
I am proud of our Bulldogs, and I think we have a champion right this year. But remember, it wasn't always this way. You are fighting and scrapping for those of us on teams that never won a game, got smeared and didn't score a point, and were went into gfames and practices week after week knowing that we really didn't have a chance.
We always did have one thing behind us though. Our parents community and coaches. With them you can become anything. without them your team goes nowhere.

To Ramona Alum wrote on Oct 18, 2008 9:30 AM:I remember thos days also. They were painful, and vaguely similar to what OG is going through right now. We were a smaller school, didn't have a lot of big players, and didn't have a big tradition of football in the area. I don't know anything about Orange Glen other than the fact that they seem to generate an awful lot of interest around their team. That seems to be an awfully good start for building a good program.
GO BULLDOGS!!!

They went into Ramona with no expectations, and came home proud that they played their hearts out for their teammates and coaches. We're proud of them. The schedule couldn't be tougher, but these kids work hard and want to be there. Let's see where those former starters end up. Hopefully, they're regretting their poor choices. Patriot football will certainly survive without them and the rest of the complainers, wanna be coaches and malcontents.

We know we cant win the game but at least we will give it are best shot. Play whoever you want our kids will still give it all the got. These are the games that build character in these young men. You have a great team and we hope your fans know how lucky they are for that.

OG should be able to schedule some teams they can compete with. Esco plays Calexico, one team played san ysidro, for example. we play hard schools every week with alot less talent than most schools. Give us a break we the best we can.

Parents can learn from their young men... determination, pride, honor, and perhaps GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP.
I am proud of our PATRIOTS and know they are currently learning life lessons that will serve them well in the future. You know something wild like college, gainful employment, and raising their own little future PATRIOTS. ONCE A PATRIOT ALWAYS A PATRIOT.

OG athlete wrote on Oct 19, 2008 7:29 PM:i am a member of the football team. it really disapoints me when people all over the county hate on us. sure we dont have a good record. we dont have the best coach. we dont have a lot of things these other teams have. but if other teams had our record and our program how many kids would even bother to play? sure i know that the next few games we play we are going to lose. i honestly think we have no hope. but im still going to go out there and give it my all. make a few tackles give some good blocks, the fun part of football. the adversity we face brings out peoples true character. oside goes out every week knowing they are going to win if they had the same amount of players they have now and they knew they were going to lose the whole season i bet atleast 10-15 people would quit. football wasn't made in highschool to be the best team it was meant to teach kids life lessons. and i have learned a life lesson. and im sure it will take me much further in life than some oside players will go. if i knew i was going to be ridiculed on a football field i would still go out and give it a shot than not show up because i knew i would lose. yea sure a lot of people can say that but guess what im doing it. i still go out every week. and i can take that life lesson that adversity gives me and compare it to any life situation. a lot of people dont respect us for the men we are and the men we are becoming.
To Disastrous wrote on Oct 19, 2008 7:45 PM:Hey Man!!
I agree with you.
The only thing that's not cool is that you want Oceanside to kill OGHS by a 100.
Those kids are very nice and they do give their heart and effort.
There is no doubt there is big flaws with OG athletics. Perhaps Williams an Ex-Alumni can start doing something about it.
OGHS needs a Latino (Mexican) coach that can recruit and relate with the 70% Latino pool of kids OGHS has to offer.
It's all about politics and greed after all!!
Look who runs boosters, look who's kids play sports.
Get the point.

Are you kidding me wrote on Oct 19, 2008 10:22 PM:Have you looked at the football coaches there are latino coaches on every level and there are a lot of non-booster latino football players starting and playing every game so don't pull the booster and politics card. I am a booster member and my close friends are involved also and we do whatever we can to help each and every kid on the football team no matter who they are. If you ever get a chance to hang out with the kids and their coaches you would see that everybody is treated the same no matter what nationality they come from. Get involved and you can see what really goes on because the people I have met all care about building a better program for all kids. You might even meet a new friend.
I have yet to see anyone from booster get any special treatment for their athletes maybe back in the day it was that way but no one that I know expects any special treatment in fact most of them give their hard earned money to make your kids look good as well as their kids.
to to disastrous wrote on Oct 19, 2008 10:37 PM:another guy that doesnt know the facts. there are three Latino coaches on the team. the head coach of freshman is Latino. Most Latino kids at the school dont play many sports . Soccer has a big turnout. If you check the rosters you will find there are quite a few kids that are latino on the football teams. We could always use more of any race kids. Why dont you run the boosters, auctions, fundraisers, etc. You never volunteer im sure of that
to to disasterous wrote on Oct 19, 2008 10:44 PM:HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO DO ANYTHING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER WITH THE ATHLETICS. I AM SURE YOUR ANSWER IS NO BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE YOU WOULD REALLY KNOW WHAT BOOSTERS IS ALL ABOUT AND IT ISN'T TO GET SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR OUR PLAYERS IT IS MORE LIKE A SECOND JOB AND MOST OF THE TIME THE COACHES DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO IS A BOOSTER MEMBER THEY HAVE TO MANY OTHER THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT. QUIT HATING ON THE BOOSTER FOR NO REASON.
Patriot Friend wrote on Oct 20, 2008 1:06 PM:That is so funny to think that booster parents have any pull or get special favors for their kid on any team. What a joke. I have never spoken once to the coach about my kid's playing time, position or whatever. My kid earns it by working hard, being where he's supposed to be when he's supposed to be there, being respectful to his teammates and coaches. And when he makes a mistake and gets reamed on the sideline, so what. It's part of life and character building. He'll learn from it. All booster parents do is work their butts off for YOUR KID and their sports, for all OG athletic programs. Not to get special favors. That's insulting. Try it sometime (volunteering), you might enjoy helping instead of complaining and pointing fingers. It's far more rewarding.
Dan wrote on Oct 20, 2008 4:09 PM:I'm beside myself on some of the truly mean comments posted by a few individuals week after week. I photograph our OG players at every game, and they are the hardest working, most dedicated individuals I know.
I walk both sides of the field and I am treated with more respect by the players and coaches on both sides than what I see tossed out here by some uneducated low class individuals.
REALTY CHECK, this is a GAME! The score doesn't matter, if you're still tooting your horn about some score 10 years from now then I really feel sorry for you, obvious you don't have much going on in your life.
Coach Plash and his staff pour all their talent, heart and soul into this team, and that goes for a lot of teachers, staff and parents as well, just as much if not more than OC, VC or any other team. Winning isn't everything, I don't send my kids to school to learn how to win, that's easy. I want them to learn how to deal with challenges and how to overcome them, that's what matters, not who wins or loses a game.
I know this won't shut up the haters out there, but ask yourself this question; "Am I projecting this attitude to my kids"? Then ask yourself this, "what kind of future am I creating for my child, for my country, for this world"? Look at the big picture, not just the score!
OG keep up the good work, we're proud of you.
oh ok I get it now wrote on Oct 20, 2008 8:43 PM:Oh so in Football the score doesnt matter at all? They're just out their for kicks and giggles..right
to oh ok wrote on Oct 20, 2008 9:42 PM:You don't think that the kids go out every game and try to win they sure don't just roll over and do nothing. Sure we want a win the team is scoring points and that is an improvement from the past few years it is going to take some time we are playing the top ten teams and champs of each division how do you expect us to do any better. I know the coaches and players start to work right after the game watching film and studying what they can improve. No one wants a win more than these guys so say what you will about the football team, coaches, and parents that are trying to make things better they are doing the best they can.
