Flutist to perform, give workshop

ENCINITAS ---- Encinitas School of Music will host guest artist Janet Parish-Whittaker from 7-8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the school, 775 Orpheus Ave. 

All flutists are invited to the event, which will include a performance and workshop. Parish-Whittaker has a master's degree in flute performance from UC San Diego. She is a freelance teacher and plays with the Goliards, a medieval music quartet.

Abrakadoodle art classes offered

FALLBROOK ---- New Abrakadoodle Art classes for toddlers and preschoolers will begin Nov. 3 at the Fallbrook School of the Arts. Six-week sessions will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Mondays.

"My First Art Class" is for children ages 20 months to 3 years, and "Lil' Art Explorers" is for 3- to 5-year-olds. Children will learn about art and artists and develop their skills, exploring different media in lessons that encourage creativity.

PHS to stage 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'

POWAY ---- Poway High School's drama department will present Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at 7 p.m. Nov. 6-8, and 2 p.m. Nov. 8 and 9 at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road.

More than 60 students will appear in the comedy, set in the hippie era of the 1960s. Student officers in the school's Theatre Guild produce all elements of the production.

Children's music workshop offered

ESCONDIDO ---- The Escondido Children's Museum will offer a children's workshop at 10 a.m. Oct. 25 at the museum, 380 N. Escondido Blvd., Studio 1.

The workshop will be taught by Jack Brooks of Ubiquitous Music Inc., an Escondido musician and teacher. Geared for second- through fourth-graders, the workshop will teach the art, elements and history of music through a unique vocal lesson.

Kids ballroom dance show set

RANCHO BERNARDO ---- Kids & Teens Rock Party Dance, featuring ballroom dance performances by fifth-graders from 15 elementary schools in the Poway Unified School District, will be presented from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 25 at Dance Motion Studios, 12120 Alta Carmel Court, Suite 410D.

The show is a culmination of two years of ballroom dance instruction in the schools by volunteers. They planned the event with help from Dance Motion Studios. The show will feature music mixed by live disc jockeys. In addition to the fox trot, rumba, waltz and swing, students will dance to a mix of '70s and '80s music, hip-hop, Latin and contemporary tunes.

Voice Performance Workshop offered

ENCINITAS ---- Youths ages 10 to 17 interested in vocal production and performance are invited to attend a Voice Performance Workshop from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Nov. 1 at the Encinitas School of Music, 775 Orpheus Ave.

Voice teacher Ron Ebel will review the fundamentals of singing and will coach students through individual and group songs.

Arts workshop for educators offered

CARLSBAD ---- The Carlsbad Arts Plus Education arts-integrated education workshop series continues with veteran SUAVE coach and professional visual artist Berta Villaescusa sharing her hands-on strategies for using visual arts to teach across the curriculum from 3:15-5:15 p.m. Oct. 20 at Calavera Hills Elementary School, 4100 Tamarack Ave.

The program allows professional artists trained in teaching core academic subjects using visual arts, music, dance and drama to share their expertise with other teachers, parents and community members. Carlsbad Unified School District teachers attend free and earn up to 7.5 buy-back hours. Cost is $20. CUSD staff members register on PDExpress.

'Beauty and the Beast' auditions set

ESCONDIDO ---- Broadway Theatre Arts Academy will hold auditions for the Broadway modern classic "Disney's Beauty and the Beast" from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 20 and 22 at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, 340 N. Escondido Blvd. Callbacks will be Oct. 25. Performances will be Feb. 27-March 1.

Talent Showcase auditions set

VISTA ---- Auditions for Premiere for Kids' 15th annual Talent Showcase will be held from 4-6 p.m. Oct. 24, and 5-7 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Off Broadway Theater, 131 Main St.

Singers, dancers, musicians, actors, groups, comedians and other performers ages 6 to 19 are invited to audition for the showcase, scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Avo Playhouse.

Participants will compete in three categories: 6-9 years, 10-14 years and 15-19 years. Winners will receive trophies and cash prizes.

Auditioners under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Performances may not be longer than three minutes. A non-refundable fee is required before the audition. All those auditioning will take part in the show.

Free ballet performance planned

ENCINITAS ---- The Performing Arts Workshop Junior Ballet Ensemble will offer a free performance at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at its studio, 1105 Second St. The recital will feature selections from the ensemble's upcoming performance of "The Nutcracker."

Create 'Spider Boo Boxes'

FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook School of the Arts & Foundry will offer a "Spider Boo Box" class from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

Students age 8 and older can create original sculptures atop wood boxes to keep their scary, hidden treasures in. The workshop is designed to help budding artists understand how to take an idea and turn it into a three-dimensional piece of art.

Audition workshop set for Oct. 21

CARLSBAD ---- Carlsbad Community Theatre will offer an audition workshop for youths ages 8 to 18 from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 21 at Kelly Elementary School.

The workshop is designed for youngsters who want to be eligible for future Carlsbad Community Theatre auditions, including "Seussical." It will cover the entire audition process. 'Willy Wonka Jr!' performances set

Youths can enter calendar art contest

NORTH COUNTY ---- Forward Movement Youth Outreach is holding its annual Calendar Graffiti Art Contest with the theme, "I Have a Dream." The contest is open to North County youths ages 12 to 18. Judges will select 13 winners based on the theme, creativity and originality, to receive prizes. Winners' art will be featured in Forward Movement's 2009 Calendar. Entries must be received or postmarked by Nov. 21.
