CARLSBAD ---- A surfer was rescued by friends after they spotted him floating face-down Tuesday afternoon, a Carlsbad Fire Department captain said.

Shortly before 2 p.m., fire paramedics were called to Carlsbad State Beach near Hemlock Avenue to respond to a possible drowning, Capt. Skip Clark said.

There, they found a group of surfers assisting a conscious but disoriented 25-year-old man, Clark said. The surfers said they had been out in deep water when they noticed their friend was separated from his board and floating face-down. He was blue in the face and not breathing as they pulled him to shore, Clark said.

It was not clear how the surfer got into trouble.

Before medics arrived, he had begun to breathe on his own again, but his blood-oxygen levels were low, Clark said. He was taken to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside for treatment.

Shame on Carlsbad City Council for endlessly stalling the construction of the new city pool at Alga Norte Park while so many kids wait on chronically-long waiting lists for swim lessons! The population has doubled since the pool was built. Vote for candidates who are truly supportive of the new pool on Nov 4 for Carlsbad City Council. Let City Council know that it's time to get Alga Norte built, ending the swim lesson wait lists, making these tough times better for families at the park and the beach.

Surfers need to take responsibility for themselves.

LOCALGURL wrote on Oct 22, 2008 6:22 PM:And WHY should tax payers pay for lifeguards to protect people that shouldn't be in the ocean in the first place if they CAN'T SWIM!!!!!!

Get some more CHP and CPD out there writing speeding tickets instead!!! Bring in some revenue and maybe people would slow down and conserve fuel YA THINK???
