GOLF NOTES: Buick tickets on sale

Advance tickets for the 2009 Buick Invitational, set for Feb. 2-9 at Torrey Pines, are now on sale. Prices are $16 for Tuesday and $26 any day Wednesday-Sunday. A season pass is available for $105.

Tickets for seniors (60 and older) are available for $16 any day of tournament week. All juniors 12 and under will be admitted free with a paying adult. All active-duty military and immediate family also will be admitted with proper identification.

Tickets can be charged over the phone by calling the tournament box office at (619) 281-4653 or at www.buickinvitational.com. Tickets are also available at Golf Mart locations throughout the county and at the Torrey Pines golf shop.

 

Q-School underway

The first stage of the PGA Tour National Qualifying Tournament, better known as Q-School, has begun at six locations. The first stage continues next week at five locations, including Carlton Oaks in Santee.

The second stage is set for mid-November at five locations ---- including Oak Valley in Beaumont ---- and the final stage will be held Dec. 3-8 at PGA West in La Quinta.

Junior golfers honored

Four North County junior golfers were named HP Scholastic Junior All-Americans by the American Junior Golf Association: Julia Thead of Poway, Danielle Frasier of Encinitas, and Rachel Morris and Steven Kearney, both of Carlsbad. Katie Sylvan of San Diego was also named to the team.

The golfers will be honored at the Rolex Junior All-America awards banquet on Nov. 23 in Florida.

John Mallinger

His third-place finish in Las Vegas put the Escondido High grad over the $1 million mark in PGA Tour earnings for the second straight season.

 

Who's not

David Toms

The 12-time PGA Tour winner has struggled for most of the season, earning just one top-10 finish this year. He's ranked 120th on the money list.
